So I have a TMobile G2. Straight out the box, with no customization what-so-ever. My only problem is the stock messaging. I'm able to add pictures to my contacts and when I text them their picture shows up in the thread. But for my own picture, its a greyed out box. How do I get my own pic to show up?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using outer space satellites.
Have you tried adding yourself as a contact?
If you go into settings>about phone>status>my phone number will say "unknown" correct?
Even if you add yourself as a contact, it will still be grayed out because the phone will not be able to distinguish that the number that you added as a contact is meant for you.
People have said that cleaning out the contacts on the sim card has helped fix this, and others have had the sim card replaced and it fixed the problem. There have also been times where people have done both and it still hasn't fixed the problem.
Hope it offers some insight for ya.

I hadn't heard of this happening with the stock G2 ROM. It happens to me on CM6 right now, but didn't on stock. If after setting yourself up as a contact, you still show up as a gray box, definitely check to see if you are an unknown number. If so, you can call up T-Mobile and ask customer support to push your number back to your SIM card. They will be able to do this over the air. Alternatively, if you have access to other phones, some of them allow you to set the phone number on the SIM (my old Nokia's, Sone Ericcson's, and Samsung's did).
If you call Tmo I think they fix the unknown number thing for you

I'd like to be able to enter my contacts on my XDA Orbit, 7-digit number only, and have it recognize these contacts when they call. My carrier passes the number (123)456-7890 to my phone as +11234567890,, so why can't my phone realize that that number is the same as 4567890 (in the same area code). This way, whenever I receive a phone call or text message, I'm not sure who it is. Is it a simple setting? Thanks. My past phones (mostly Nokias and Samsungs) have not had problems with this at all.

Maybe you can try this:
Contacts > Menu > Options..., you can see the Area CODE, just Clear it.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I kept getting the 500 Internal Server Error when trying to access the site. Neither removing the area code, nor adding a 1, nor adding +1 works. Thanks for your help so far.
I have a stock Evo4G without root.
Serious issue here with one of my contacts on my Android phone:
In one of my contacts, I have a friend's name, phone number, and email address. His phone number is a domestic number 847-xxx-xxxx. His email address is a gmail address. Also listed in his account is a second number that starts with a (+39) international number and another one of his valid emails. When I edit that contact, I am unable to remove the international number from his contact, it does not appear as a number that I can edit. If I delete the contact completely from the phone or the computer (in both cases it makes him disappear from my gmail on my computer), he is still in my phone with his international number only. Then I can not edit this contact at all?! It isn't a google contact, it isn't a phone contact...it appears to be magical?
This is happening on my Evo4G, but also happened on my Hero. I was hoping that it would work its way out of my phone if it was a bug, but it clearly is a bug in google's software or something hanging on through my contacts? Has anyone had this issue. The Sprint CSRs were completely useless as I would have guessed. Can someone please help me elminate this contact?! I will also post over on a google forum.
Settings, account and sync, google, click the refresh button next to contacts. See if that removes it.
yeah, no dice. tried that first.
is it linked to another account? if so you'll have to edit the other account
Geez, nevermind. I figured this out. thanks though! This guy has an international phone number in his facebook account. I wasn't aware that it Android 2.1 was now pulling contact information from facebook as well. That's why it makes sense it is on my Hero and Evo.
Thanks! very sorry to waste your time. I'm an idiot.
Also a tip for anyone who may be having contact issues...
remove the account, wait like 2min reboot and re-add...that will force data to be re-fetched entirely - fixed an issue with missing photos for me
when I recieve a text or call it doesn't register with my contacts, just shows numbers no info.
and yes i put my contatcs back on the phone.
nobody has any ideas on how to fix this ?

Well, normally this happens when your contacts are being pulled from the SIM card. Try going into your contact list, and tap Menu > View > Contacts. This should exclude your SIM contacts from the list. Future messages should now be tagged with the name of the contact instead of the number. Keep in mind that this will have no effect of messages already on the phone, only future ones.

The only other thing I can think of then, is to make certain that the number that is being displayed is exactly the same as the one in your contact list. This includes the +1areacode. I.e. If the number for your contact is 555-5555, and the incoming text number is +15555555555, just change the contact number to match the incoming. This would, again, only resolve the future contacts.
HI!
I have a HTC Desire CDMA through a small carrier called Bluegrass Cellular. I was having problems with my recovery so i ran RUU by US Cellular. Now my phone number in about phone is showing 0000002538.
It is obvious that the number is wrong. I have flashed the same RUU without any problems.
Now i cannot make calls at all. Most threads say use another phone to fix your sim card. Well my carrier dont use sim cards.
I know there has to be a way to fix it... I mean bluegrass has to put my phone number in somehow. I typed ##3282# and changed my MSID to the correct phone number but still have not fixed my problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I now have a phone that will not do any type of communication.
I just fixed it. I don't know how it fixed it but here is what I did...
I reran the same RUU... US Cellular (2.1):
http: // 2fastroms.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=87
Then opened dialer and dialed ##3282#.
Clicked "Edit Mode"
used my carriers password (usually "000000")
Clicked "Advanced"
Clicked "MSID"
Changed MSID to my 10 digit phone number
Clicked "Menu" Button
Clicked "Commit Changed"
Clicked "Ok" to reboot phone
And that fixed it. Good luck with anyone else with this problem!
and remember do this at your own risk! I am not responsible for any error it may cause!
well i just realized that that only fixed my issue where it cannot call text or talk.. But it however did not change the number back in "About Phone".
Any ideas?

My GSM phone has the same prob... but it happened when a moved my old phone number from my last phone over to my new sim card.... my about phone shows the number I had for 5 days before my old number replaced it, it is only a cosmetic thing. (the number it shows does not work by the way)
Ill look into it and if i can find any thing ill post here for you
I figured out how to fix it... I was like duh when u did. All u have to do is dial ##000000# (could change depending on ur carrier). And click edit mode. Then it will allow you to edit MSID AND MDN all in one page. Hope this helps somebody else!
I fixed it if you have the probs with GSM cards, pop it in a SIM reader and edit the "My Phone Numbers" field
I have a rooted phone. I changed my phone number about a year ago. My phone has had no problems, none that I noticed, until a couple months ago. I noticed that I couldn't send MMS. I read a lot of threads about the source of the problem being the APN settings. I tried everything that I came across but no luck. Then I found out by looking in my settings that my phone is programmed with my old phone number. I saw some threads that said to try certain messaging apps to get the MMS to work but none of them did. I finally found an app that allows you to input a different phone number. I put in my newer phone number and now I can send MMS. I also found out that when I called my voicemail it called my old number. I had to go into my call settings and to the voicemail settings to change the number to my newer number. What can I do to program my phone with my newer phone number? I don't like the messing app that I'm using now. I want to go back to Go SMS Pro. I really liked it.

I am going to assume that you have sprint service. If you do, I know two options to get the phone info updated. If you have done nothing else to the phone other than root it and most likely you'll need to be on a stock ram than you can try this.
For the first option you'll need the phone MSL code.. dial it like this ##000000# (change zeroes with the MSL) than edit the phone number in the field and don't change the MSID unless you know what it is.
Second and the best in my opinion, is to try and do a hands free activation by dialing ##72786#.. this will reset the phone number information. After you do that, the phone will reboot and it will try to make hands free activation. *This option require internet access to get the updates. Incase your phone doesn't connect to 3g or 4g, connect it to wifi and it should update.
Please be careful and keep in mind that I assumed that you have sprint service and also using a stock rooted ram and have changed nothing on the device other than gaining root access.
I hope that helps.
