If I have s-off can I just clear cache/data, extract system.img from an RUU and install through recovery. Then boot and just install superuser from the market to regain root as I should will still have system r/w access?
Sent from my CyanogenMod Desire HD
It is not that easy, because installing superuser requires root permissions, which you do not have. It is better to just use a custom rom loaded with the update, such as Android Revolution 2.0.1.

This file http://www.unrevoked.com/#desire work on all desire with froyo 2.2?
I just have to follow this procedure?
What HBOOT you on?
2.2 comes with 0.92 if I'm not wrong, so no chance to root it. You need to downgrade.
thanks.. but the downgrade involves the loss of functionality (no file)?
You need to downgrade, root the phone and then you'll be able to install all roms (also froyo ones).
Can I do the root without install rom manager after?
Root is done with unrevoked and it install the recovery automatically. Then you can install or not rom manager app.
this is the guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745903) to downgrade but, can not find link files.
I wonder whether I can find a stock ROM (Wildfire with Android 2.2 with HTC Sense) with just root permissions (-rw), without any modifications (added/updated/removed) features (all is original from stock like HTC boot animation and sound, dailer,...etc) and not cooked builds.
Is it simply to add root permissions to unpacked stock RUU and pack it again?
For any S-OFF device with stock ROM, does it mean it's already rooted?
I used AlphaRev X to set my Wildfire to S-OFF and got HBOOT 6.01.1022, is the original stock ROM installed after S-OFF already rooted in that case?
Thanks for support

Point 5, Safe Flash RUU ZIP Files. The first 3 entries have two editions each - Rooted and Non Rooted.
BTW, Root != S-OFF. S-OFF is the Secuflag being turned off, thus, leaving your system "open". Root is the presence of the Superuser binary on your phone. A phone is not "rooted", contrary to the popularity of the term, but, it is the ROM that is rooted. If you have only got S-OFF using AlphaRev X, then you will have to install the Superuser Binary yourself, for your ROM to be rooted. Simply S-OFFing will not give you root.

For the rooted Safe Flash RUU ZIP Files, is there any modifications over these roms or it's typically identical to original stock ROMs with just superuser binaries?
Is it simple to inject superuser binaries for pre-installed stock ROM with S-OFF over AlphaRevX HBOOT?
No, they are the stock ROM's, with no modifications, but, they need Clockworkmod Recovery to install. If you would rather have the Stock Recovery, then, flash your Arabic RUU, then download SuperOneClick, and it will root your official ROM, with exactly the features you are looking for.
Superoneclick can be found here:

i rooted my phone last year. and i believe i only have a partial root because i do not have an sdk directory.
also i have hboot 0.97, do i need to update my hboot to the current version?
if so how should i go about doing it
( i am runing cyanogenmod 7)
i have s-off.
There is no sdk directory for the evo as long as you are s-off and recovery have superuser and busybox you are fully rooted s-off is nand unlocked which isn't rooting the phone but root privileges for the bootloader allowing you to flash unofficial PC36IMG.zips in the bootloader recovery is for flashing rom, mod, script, and apk zips. Superuser and busybox give your actual phone partition root privilege to use root only apps so s-off, recovery, superuser and busybox = full root superuser and busybox but no s-off or recovery is temp root, and s-off only is partial root
Edit: cm7 is prerooted so as long ad u have a recovery you are fully rooted if you don't have a recovery you flash that via a pc36img.zip in hboot I recommend flashing the amon RA style supersonic recovery v3.11 as it uses the capacitive buttons for navigation allows u to restore cwm recovery backups and amon RA back ups and is as stable as amon RA, the navigation by capacitives is home=up, menu=down, back=back and searchkey= select

No need to update hboot. Look at post above for more info.
Hi.
While back I ran Revolutionary tool to S-off and root + CWM recovery.
Recently I ran official 2.3 RUU and used stock ROM. Now I want to try ICS, but I don't have CWM anymore. Revolutionary hboot and S-off is still ok. Tried running Revolutionary tool again, but it says I'm already S-off and tries to install CWM, but fails. Tried to install CWM manually through fastboot, but it hangs on sending file. I can still see the device with "fastboot devices".
Since I used a RUU, I don't have root access anymore.
Any idea on how to flash CWM?
IF u are still s-off u can flash a new recovery, click 4ext recovery on my sig, download and install the 4ext recovery updater app then flash recovery. to get root just flash superuser zip file

How can that help me, when I don't have root access? The superuser apk itself does no good without root access. The 4EXT app need busybox, and busybox needs root.
This is the situation:
I want a custom recovery. But for that, I need root. And to get root, I need a custom recovery. It is an evil circle! But since I have Revolutionary hboot and S-OFF, there must be some way I can get a custom recovery.

The first step:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
Download recovery image and flash it via fastboot, or using some flasher.
Then like you did before flash Superuser .zip:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
After that you'll have root access and you can flash 4ext recovery as well.

I quote myself from my initial post:
"Tried to install CWM manually through fastboot, but it hangs on sending file. I can still see the device with "fastboot devices"."
So that don't work for me, sorry. Seems I can't write to recovery partition. Didn't work with the Revolutionary tool either. The only thing I can think of, that could work, is if the Revolutionary tool could see the device as untouched by the tool, and start the process from the beginning.
Did you try with erase recovery command, and then flash recovery?
If that doesn't work, 2.3 RUU and start from scratch.

Seems to hang on erase command too. Screenshot:
I'll try to do another RUU.
I managed to flash CWM! Just had to change computers. Weird, since my Windows is fairly fresh and had all the right drivers.
hello i have an htc desire whit s-off on stock ruu and cwm recovery but no root and all over the internet they said that just revolutionary can root my gb stock rom but when i enter in revolutionary it just said that i have already s-off and ask me if i want to flash a custom recovery, no root question how can i root my desire? and something else i will not change my stock ruu whit an other one , this is the only that work on my desire and i don't want any custom rom so please is there anyone that can tell me how to root my desire?
Revolutionary does not root ur phone, it makes u s-off. To root, simply google superuser, and on that site, download superuser zip file and the su-binary for arm. Put both files on sdcard, boot recovery and flash both zip files and reboot.
