root problems - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello i have an htc desire whit s-off on stock ruu and cwm recovery but no root and all over the internet they said that just revolutionary can root my gb stock rom but when i enter in revolutionary it just said that i have already s-off and ask me if i want to flash a custom recovery, no root question how can i root my desire? and something else i will not change my stock ruu whit an other one , this is the only that work on my desire and i don't want any custom rom so please is there anyone that can tell me how to root my desire?

Revolutionary does not root ur phone, it makes u s-off. To root, simply google superuser, and on that site, download superuser zip file and the su-binary for arm. Put both files on sdcard, boot recovery and flash both zip files and reboot.

[Q] To root or not to root

Hi, running wildfire (buzz), froyo 2.2.1 hboot x....0002.
I have tried following the big messy sticky guide in general forum. I think I have AlphaRev and CWM installed. The HBOOT shows 6.01.0002, S-OFF and I get CMW when I go to recovery. But when I try to test if I have root when I boot into htc sense the test app says no. No superuser or root. Am I missing something? Every single guide I have found here says alpharevx or revoked should give root..
The guide says to RUU from 2.2.1 to 2.1. Is this necessary when I want to install a custom rom?
Any and all help much appreciated.
Unrevoked will root the phone along with installing custom recovery by a nand exploit.
But alpharevx neither roots the phone nor installs custom recovery. It turns off the nand security to make rooting (+ installing custom recovery) easier. So if you made s-off with alpharevx, then you need to root and install custom recovery on your own (which are very easy)..
And you dont need to downgrade with an RUU. Just go with this link..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15226717&postcount=68 .
Also check the complete wildfire index thread from dev section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318 .
Edit: oh.. didn't get you clearly. Looks like you have custom recovery installed. Anyway, you can check the above link for rooting. And to install custom roms, you just need cwm recovery installed. Downgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.1 (using RUU) is not necessary in any case. And to root your stock rom just use superone click root method or gingerbreak.apk or you can also install Su binary (= rooting) from cwm recovery. And you dont need to root a custom Rom because custom roms will be already rooted. Another thing you need to remember is some roms need cwm version 2.x while others need cwm version 3.x or above. You need to shift between recoveries according to that need . On how to do that, check the index thread.

Flash Superuser Binary in Clockworkmod. There's absolutely no need to use any RUU / Unrevoked if you have got Clockworkmod Installed.
Download SU Binary here:
http://bit.ly/su2361ef
Flash, and check for root again. This will give you a rooted Stock ROM.
Alternatively, if you just want to change ROMs , you dont need to be "rooted". Just a Custom Recovery like Clockworkmod will do. So, if that's your ultimate goal, just flash the new ROM. Again, dont touch RUUs/Unrevoked.
Thank you, both for clearing that up. I must say the sticky post is way way over complicated and dead wrong on the process. Since it's a sticky it needs to get cleaned up by someone who knows about it.
It's not a sticky actually. (I assume you are referring to this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145035)
I posted my views there but everyone seems happy with that, so whatever suits the individual I guess.
I have posted an overview of the process here (This is a sticky thread, so I kinda hope you are not referring to this one ):

Hi, I have the same problem as micnolmad.
I'm running wildfire:
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.01.1002
I used AlphaRev to get S-OFF, and change from HBOOT 1.01.0002.
I thought it was meant to convert HBOOT to 1.01.0001, but for some reason it's now 6.01.1002. Not sure if this is important? At least the phone's now S-OFF, which should enable rooting?
However, booting into HTC sense, rom manager syays I do not have root!
I have clockwork 3.0.0.6 but when I use it to install cyanogen 7.0.3, the installation says successful, and then freezes on start up.
Any ideas?
Did you perform all the wipes in clockwork (Data, cache,Dalvik Cache) before flashing your new rom, these are important and cause problems if not done!!
Also read this thread, the posts above mention flashing su binary to get root.

I think you'll have to S-OFF and root again and then flash the stock recovery using fastboot. Just use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680 and instead of using a custom recovery use your "stock" package
No need to do s-off again.
If you are on hboot 1.01.0001 just flash the wwe_froyo_ruu. Or even you can use pc49img method. And if you are on hboot 1.01.0002 then you need to use pc49img method from froyo ota.zip of that hboot you used.
And if your hboot is 0.80 you can use the above 2methods of ECLAIR update. Or use unrevoked to point to the stock recovery image from the file menu (but remember on using unrevoked you will get root permissions).
EASIEST METHOD : Flash the ruu or ota that you have taken the hboot from (while reverting back to S-ON).
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Thank you guys i'll try the above mentioned methods
Used the pc49img mathod bot during the fastboot it only reads the zip containing recovery and a blue bar atthe side appears but gives no option to install ......i think it is because that i have done s-on my device due to which it does not allow me to install recovery.
I think i should do s-off again and flash stock recovery using pc49img method and then do s-on again.....give any suggestions then i'll try
You don't have to do s-off.
Now in your case installing recovery through pc49img method means not just installing the recovery alone. If you extract the recovery.img file HTC signature will be lost. And it is in hboot menu and not fastboot menu. What you have to do is to install all official contents without extracting the file. And another important thing is sdcard must be fat32.
If you taken hboot from ota (during reverting to s-on), then this is the way. Extract the contents of ota and you will find firmware.zip . Now donot modify this firmware.zip and just keep it in the root of sdcard. Then rename the firmware.zip to pc49img.zip and reboot to hboot menu.
And if you have taken hboot from an RUU, then just run the RUU process.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
thank you very much bharat...........i used the ota froyo 2.25.720.1 firmware and flashed it and it worked
Now i have a completely unrooted phone with
S-ON
OFFICIAL HTC FROYO ;SOFTWARE VERS. 2.25.720.1(THANK GOD I MADE A BACKUP OF IT WHEN I USED ALPHAREV X AFTER FLASHING CLOCKWORKMOD)
H-BOOT -1.01.0002
Stock recovery
thank you very much
NOW I KNOW THE WHOLE WAY HOW TO ROOT MY PHONE AND TO UNROOT IT COMPLETELY...!!!!!!!!THANK YOU

Go to shipped roms.com
search for buzz,click on it,
download the ota update according to the software version your phone is running
extract it and inside it you'll find firmware.zip
rename it to PC49IMG.zip place on the sd card reboot the phone holding volume down and power key
it will read the file and ask you to update then click on yes and you are done.......
make sure your card is fat32

[Q]Installing custom ROM with stock Recovery?

Hey XDA-Dudes,
I just got my Desire HDand I wanted to put a custom ROM on it because the stock ROM is pretty crappy.
Now I saw in the recovery that this Phone is alread S-Off and the lazy noob I am I don't want to downgrad and root my phone just to install clockwork recovery (I'm on 2.2.1 Build 1,75,xxxxxx).
So can I use my stock recovery to flash a third party ROM?
And how do I do it?
Edit: I want to flash to CM7 if it's important.
gingerbreak is able to perm root your build. (install it from your sd card, and then run it)
it may error out and say something went wrong, its ok, reboot the device, and you're now probably rooted.
download rom manager from market and if the perm. root succeeded then use it to flash cwm recovery.
Did it but after the reboot I get stuck on this screen...
abload.de/img/img_0165xe4s.jpg
Edit: Pretty sure I'm S-Off:

you have radio S-Off, not ENG S-Off.
where it says "SHIP" it should say "ENG" instead.
Only then will you be able to flash cwm recovery.
Right now all you can do is flash different stock roms using the RUU via the pc, or PD98IMG off the sd.
Okay thanks,
I'll guess I'll go 1.32 and root afterwards to install crm.

S-Off but on 6.16hboot w/o root access?

okay so i updated to the new rom by ruu method and i was already rooted when i did it. So here is the deal now, im trying to use root required apps and its telling me im not rooted the su binary is not installed or it is in the wrong directory so i click okay and i launch my phone into bootloader mode and it shows revolutionary s-off hb6.16.00 and i am not able to get into recovery mode. So am i really not rooted? Did the update only make ir look like my s is off?
what i want to do? I want to be on s-off and rooted for reals instead of fakey.
First download and flash amon RA FNMA thru bootloader. In that recovery you can flash superuser and binaries. There is an option for it. U are already s-off so you r almost there.
Support TrevE !!
Hey,
Did you install a recovery when you turned s-off? I had it happen once when switching roms that something must have went wrong between the rom and super user and I had to run recovery to get it back to a previous version of super user in order for it to work and be able to manage root, even though I already had s-off.
and if you didnt flash the recovery then:
defiantly listen to the post before me, go flash the amon recovery!
Good luck let us know how you do!
Your right steve i didnt flash a recovery but because i thought i could do it in my recovery after the ruu install but it turns out that the ruu must have taken it off because i have never really use ruu just zips so is there a clockworkmod file that i can change use in the bootloader flash update method?
Where can i find that other recovery program 2nd poster?
grabbed that recovery here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
then usb toggle through recovery to get the su flashed and good to go.
thank you
actually no bueno!! su app still wont update says root access failed when i try to update it and also busy box not installed and also i dl an app to check root access and it says root is not on device so what i have is a supersonic device with s-off and custom recovery working and also was able to flas su through recovery yet i still get messages from apps saying device is not rooted??? I guess i spoke to soon.
Im just going to try and flash a custom rom from recovery and hopefully the system files will load correctly i will do a nand back up for this one first of course.. ill be back.
i used energys newest release and holy kentucky durby batman it works my system files are back to root access.Maybe has to do with something then from the stock ruu bacause i went to the bootloader after putting energy back on and it says hb6.16.1002 which is what i got with the stock ruu i used, and s-off still and root access available. awsome.

Keep in mind that having S-OFF and having root access are two different things even though they are usually together: S-OFF allows you to flash whatever you want on to the phone while having root access means that you have access to basically every aspect of the phone (application-wise) on that specific ROM. For example, it is possible to flash stock (which has no root access) and keep S-OFF which will allow you to flash anything else whenever.
When flashing the RUU it overwrites the custom recovery ( Ra - TWRP ) and also removes the ability for Superuser to do its job. So you broke your " root " .
I don't know if it will work in your case but try to re-run whatever method you used to gain root access in the first place. See if you can find a PC36IMG.zip that is already rooted. and then a PC36IMG.zip of a recovery.
You can flash both by booting into the bootloader. Remember to remove / delete the first ( rooted rom ) image from the SD card before you run the recovery PC36IMG.zip.
Man I hope that all made sense !
hboot 6.16/s-off revolutionary/stock recovery/no root
I had the same issue. hboot 6.16 revolutionary s-off but i was not rooted and on the stock recovery. i thought i was a goner because no pc36img i downloaded would flash in bootloader and ruu's wouldn't flash. I just recently started revolutionary and when i plugged my phone in revolutionary said 'you are already s-off, do you want to flash revolutionary clockwork recovery?' Once I hit Y (yes) it flashed the recovery and i was rooted again. this took a whole lot of guessing and checking so hopefully this helps someone

Flashing recovery with Revolutionary hboot and S-off (NO ROOT)? [SOLVED]

Hi.
While back I ran Revolutionary tool to S-off and root + CWM recovery.
Recently I ran official 2.3 RUU and used stock ROM. Now I want to try ICS, but I don't have CWM anymore. Revolutionary hboot and S-off is still ok. Tried running Revolutionary tool again, but it says I'm already S-off and tries to install CWM, but fails. Tried to install CWM manually through fastboot, but it hangs on sending file. I can still see the device with "fastboot devices".
Since I used a RUU, I don't have root access anymore.
Any idea on how to flash CWM?
IF u are still s-off u can flash a new recovery, click 4ext recovery on my sig, download and install the 4ext recovery updater app then flash recovery. to get root just flash superuser zip file

How can that help me, when I don't have root access? The superuser apk itself does no good without root access. The 4EXT app need busybox, and busybox needs root.
This is the situation:
I want a custom recovery. But for that, I need root. And to get root, I need a custom recovery. It is an evil circle! But since I have Revolutionary hboot and S-OFF, there must be some way I can get a custom recovery.

The first step:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
Download recovery image and flash it via fastboot, or using some flasher.
Then like you did before flash Superuser .zip:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
After that you'll have root access and you can flash 4ext recovery as well.

I quote myself from my initial post:
"Tried to install CWM manually through fastboot, but it hangs on sending file. I can still see the device with "fastboot devices"."
So that don't work for me, sorry. Seems I can't write to recovery partition. Didn't work with the Revolutionary tool either. The only thing I can think of, that could work, is if the Revolutionary tool could see the device as untouched by the tool, and start the process from the beginning.
Did you try with erase recovery command, and then flash recovery?
If that doesn't work, 2.3 RUU and start from scratch.

Seems to hang on erase command too. Screenshot:
I'll try to do another RUU.
I managed to flash CWM! Just had to change computers. Weird, since my Windows is fairly fresh and had all the right drivers.
