WP7 Small Touches? - Windows Phone 7 General

What are some small aspects of WP7 that you appreciate that others may not have noticed?
For me, after about two or three weeks of having the phone, I realized something about the text message tile. This is most likely old, but, if you have no messages, the smiley will be like this , if you have a message - ;-), if a message failed to send - :-( (or something like that, I don't quite remember it), if you have 4 or more messages - :-O
It was just something that made me smile and think, "really? who would have thought of including that?"
Anyone else have moments like this?

Really, that happens? That's a really nice touch!
For some reason I always loved how the arrow button rotates around when switching between the Live Tile view and the Apps list view. I don't really know why I like it, but I just do!

Yes that really happens, it is touches like this that make the device a delight to use, I really like the on screen keyboard, it feels just right in use

It turns out, every time you type on the soft-keyboard in WP7, it’s a subtly different sound. Whereas the iPhone has only one audio sample that it repeats every time you tap on the virtual key, WP7 plays one of eight variations in a loop.
Although it’s ever so slightly different, Microsoft claims they’ve done this so its more organic like footsteps down a hallway – the same but different, and less “obnoxious” if you were to press the backspace repeatedly. Matthew also claims feedback from “power typers” suggests the sounds deliver a better tactile experience.

seconded on the sw keyboard. And the keyboard is also good. It keeps up with fast typing and multitouch as well as text correction is smooth as butter. This has been the most pleasant sw keyboard I have ever used.
I think I can say another good touch is the start menu button. It is so good for quick one handed operation especially on the dell venue pro. I have to put a bit of force so its not pushed by mistake
Again nice touch

I didn't realise that about the keyboard sounds, it definitely does contribute to the pleasant nature of the typing experience

I really like the sense the phone gives (through its use of the panoramic screens) that you're the one controlling the phone, not the software. For instance, the speed at which you move through the content is dictated by the speed at which your finger moves, not some predetermined speed associated with an invisible switch you flip when your finger swipes across the screen.

How should manufacturers differentiate

Hi Folks,
I wanted to share a concern of mine here.
Now that Microsoft governs EVERY aspect of hardware, how should manufacturers differentiate their offerings?
Will it just be by price and color of the case?
Price, design and storage capacity.
Unfortunately, they didn't tell them how to design their phones. Look at that LG crap, it's soooo ugly... that's not how they will be able to compete with the iPhone, which is what are apparently trying.
(granted, the iPhone's design is getting stale, but at least it's not ugly)
Screen size, type and quality, quality of camera, storage size, battery... But yes, there won't be much left for differentiation, although I personally find it great.
Keyboard or not keyboard.
Though it seems the OS doesn't work in landscape mode. Sucks, I hope they figure this out (though I doubt it).
You doubt that WP7 will have landscape mode?
It doesn't have it now.
And yes, I doubt that it will have it.
(I mean FULL landscape mode, not only messages and browser)
It doesn't work in the emulator but I've seen it in videos. It doesn't move the application bar but rotates the buttons. I'd say it makes sense on widescreen displays...They would have to do something with the homescreen though.
I've seen it in my own apps. But I want it to work in the whole system, INCLUDING the homescreen and every other place.

Hi,
this is an interesting direction this discussion is going.
I would think that they will have to support it somehow - lest manufacturers like LG will be unhappy.
On the other hand: the Pre has the exactly same issue. On it, many apps are portrait only and it has no issues with that.
How often do we really see someone (non poweruser) use the QWERTY? Be honest!

That's why I doubt WP7 will support it.
Microsoft is copying Apple's approach, which means they're not adding anything, unless lots of people want it.
I've written some apps for WP7 and landscape worked. But unless it works in the whole system, this OS is of no use to me.

I think they should differentiate by telling MS to screw their "specs" to some degree and put a d-pad/trackball/optical mouse on the front of the device where they belong. I like minimum hardware specs, but number of button specs and screen hardware is nonsense imo. Basically I want a device with multitouch resistive screen tech, and some sort of up-down-left-right control on the front of the device. Honestly, what would MS do if Samsung put an optical mouse and camera on the front of their device? Would they sue? I highly doubt it.
Let to OEM take care of their controls, and MS should just focus on making the software experience nice. I just upgraded to the Omnia II, and I'm missing a physical dpad in a HUGE way. I don't miss the kb all the much with swype, but this dpad thing was killing me. I remapped my volume rocker to up and down so it's not as bad...but if I couldn't do the same on a wp7 device <cringe>.
But to answer your question more directly...right now they'll have to focus on things like ergonomics and style. But I hope that the late success of the HD2 under t-mobile shows MS that people actually like the openness of WM they just didn't like the default device experience and that makes an impact on what wp7 will actually turn out to be.

Metro UI is perfect for d-pad use, and I think it's ridiculous that they don't seem to be supporting it.

Thanks but no thanks. First you allow d-pad and next you see programs (games mostly, but not only) that don't function well without it. You allow OEMs to add non-standard controls and they start making drivers themselve, mucking up OS-wide conventions and standards (like HTC is doing with hardware keys left and right).
A d-pad might be a nice feature but if it's there it should be on all devices.

You and your fragmentation ...optional keyboards already exist...you don't think that will come into play on games and applications? You can't keep a uniform xbox experience for a phone like you can for a console...people like different control. Heck even consoles are fragmented control wise, controllers, joysticks, steering wheels, guns, etc.
Let the people choose their controls they want for the task at hand.
We've had this discussion before, you fix this issue by having good sdks that allow you to easily create an application where you can set your controls based on your device.
I defintely need hardware buttons so I won't buy one unless it has a hardware keyboard. But we've seen tons of Windows Mobile devices and they all look different. Other then buttons and UI I'm sure that will follow to WP7. 3" to 5" screens, 8GB,16GB,32GB,64GB space. Color, material, qwerty. These will all be differentiaters.

Absolutely. You can also require fallback controls for applications that require directional buttons - in the shape of on-screen d-pad, or other mechanisms, anything.
The problem is, there are no sdks and no requirements. Therefore I say - no, it should never be just up to manufacturers. It has to be delivered by the OS, with proper infrastructure in policies in place.
By the way, I've never seen any official requirement that the number of hardware keys is limited. There are mandatory keys, but nothing says there can't be more. Or does it? I know it's a popular idea in forums for sure, but there's no definitive source for this.

They're looking for the uniformity of the device, especially what the front of the device looks like with it's 3 buttons and the big mistake here is the lack of a d-pad-type control.
Also Microsoft issued a response saying that the hd2 had "too-many" buttons at MIX. So they seem to be sticking to their enforcement of device hardware key uniformity. But in my opinion it's silly...I honestly don't know how people Tolerate using the iphone with 2 buttons and a rocker.
Personally, I like D-pads/optical & physical trackballs, an ok/enter button, some kind of home key, and voice command buttons. I use the physical keys to control my device more than the touch screen, alot of my phone usuage is "one-hand" usage...primarily just thumb use.
Well, I'm not sure the wording used by MS meant exactly that, but anyway. I've used two devices without d-pad, the HD and the HD2, and also prefer one-handed operation with my thumb as the primary control. I must say that I miss d-pad occasionally, but exactly because some software developers didn't think about ways of handling their control elements without it. And therein lies the problem - relying on d-pad is just easy. Therefore if you know that some devices won't have it, you must force developers to write software that will work using other control mechanisms.

Like you said I don't ever really miss the D-Pad until I use old applications that don't have good touch input set up. This is when I slide to landscape with my Touch Pro2 and use the arrow keys.
To differentiate themselves from other OEMS, they should produce better hardware. Hopefully this will drive the build quality of there devices thru the roof.

coming from iPhone

I am comfortable with my iPhone and have nothing against AT&T. I am thinking of moving to the EVO for its large screen and less expensive family plans.
However, I am afraid I may miss features I am used to having on my iPhone.
Can anyone answer these two questions I haven't found answers to yet?
1. Do you from you list of contacts pick a list called favorites to more easily dial from than going through all contacts?
2. While typing (or replying to) email, can you select a block of text and then cut and paste it?
If anyone who knows both phones knows of other things I may miss from the iPhone let me know please. I went to the Sprint store yesterday but the sales person really wasn't helpful - he tried but did not know a lot.
HTC Sense has a favorite's widget you can use and there is a list of favorites when you bring up your contact list as well. I don't personally use it but some might find it handy.
Selecting text is definitely different than the iphone...it's not somthing I've found myself doing often so I can't answer that personally but I know the option is there to enter a "Select Text" mode when you long press on some text.
I came from the iPhone and left it when the 3Gs came out and the thing you'll probably need adjusting to is the game selection...android market is improving on that but it's not been around as much so it's lagging a little behind in that aspect.
Lastly, the one thing I missed absolutely most when I made the switch was the keyboard...I've yet to find a keyboard that does prediction as good at the iPhone's keyboard for the tap-to-type method.
However, if you're willing to try a different method, Swype has some distinct advantages for typing on a screen (look once for the first letter in a word and look away while dragging your thumb around the screen in the rough shape of where you think the keys would be and it works great for me).
Ultimately, I would conclude that the phones are just different...it's like going from Mac (in it's current incarnation) to Linux. There's some things they do share in common but a lot of what they do, they just do it differently and both pretty well.

This just in.
I don't see a major problem but here's the news for you!
Sad. If I'm reading that right, C&P won't function in the phone app...for...like...copying a phone number from one area (maybe from a browser) to the new contact input fields.
Thank you, MS, for such a ...erm...experience...with WP7
Well, you are reading it wrong. The stuff is about third party applications. It doesn't say anything about native apps, so we don't know how it will function and where.
As regards third party apps, there's nothing wrong with using a control designed for text, for, er, displaying text. That's the way it should be. Not everything should be selectable, and it isn't selectable in all OSes including "big" Windows.

Well, depending on how the text is set up, you should be able to just tap a phone number in any built-in app and it will bring up the create contact section.
I read from the article that in 3rd party apps you'll be able to c&p only text from text boxes. So you can't copy twitter tweet right from the timeline.
So apparently you'll be able to c&p whatever you want from text boxes,
Plus probably other displayed content from native apps.
So I think not a huge problem here.

Was just, for the sake of minimizing comment, using that as an example, not as limited to. I'm more concerned with being about take information from emails or text messages or other content in a browser and being able to put it elsewhere when I need to.
I hope nobody is going to try to tell me I never have need for it...sheesh.

Anywhere you can select text, like you can in the browser, should work. Text messages (unless they change it) you would have to go through the motions of choosing Forward from the longpress menu then select the text from the text box; a bit long-winded but doable.
If Microsoft can add the function I would imagine DEVs could also make use of it in their apps. I could be wrong.
Yeah, they're talking about how devs can modify their text fields to utilize the C&P feature when they update their apps.
Hope they actually do this...
Thanks for the post. Been waiting for this.
This, while exactly what I expected after hearing what Mr. Kindel had to say, is a downer. Now, I don't use cut'n'paste that often on phones, but when I do it's almost exclusively from non-edit controls.
I would also have expected a way to copy'n'paste images considering they see Office as such a big thing, and TBH I quite often paste product images into OneNote on the computer - which syncs perfectly to the phone. Of course you're unable to edit the photo note on the phone, but just being able to cut'n'paste them would be great still.
TBQH this looks more like a half-assed implementation done quickly to get an update out the door.
If copy-n-paste is available at API level, there is nothing to stop app developers to implement whatever they like to support the feature directly.
The limitation of text box is only a limitation when the devs are too lazy to re-complile their code.
Of course, if such feature is not available at API level, that will be a true limitation. Personally, without multi-tasking support for 3rd party apps, copy-n-paste usage will still be quite limited.
Without the tradditional stylus and resistive touch screen, try to accurately select the text you want to copy on a capacitive screen using your fingers is nothing but frustration. I tried a few times on my Android phone and never worked for me. A pen and paper is much easier to do than copy-n-paste.

Have you tried a WP7 device? I know we can't currently select, but the "cursor" that is implemented at the moment (useful for adding/deleting stuff in texts) is pretty good.

I must say the virtual cursor on WP7 is pretty nicely implemented.
Android sucks compared to this and is a pain sometimes.
I guess you guys haven't tried 2.3 or any new samsung devices. Copy and paste, and the cursor is very finger friendly.
I have used cursor on Android 2.2. It is much better than 2.1 but still copy-n-paste largely dependent on app's implementation.
Capacity touch screens are inheritally inaccurate. Cursors make it less painful to use but can't eliminate that inaccuracy. You just got a tool to let you fine tune your selection. It still takes multiple tries to accomplish the job. And god forbid, if you want to select a paragrah out (multiple lines) of an email, that cursor won't be much help to you.

I remember holding the.control button on WM devices and selecting/copying multiple items. Those were the days.

List of things i want my phone to do!

1) Copy and paste (its really irritating that i must memorise number and type manually into notes)
2) Wallpaper background (animated tiles is not enought, the menu screen looks really bored)
3) Customise tiles (i wanna put my own picture on my own tiles! some stock tiles looks really bad)
4) Custom ringtone
5) better video capability and zooming function on my hd7 (the current video function is worst than my 3years old sony ericson phone~)
6) my camera setting keeps going back default. i must switch off my flash and lower down the camera sound manually every time i use it.
7) LED flash light.
8) cheaper apps/games. iphone are selling their games at $0.99, WP7 $10.99 (omfgbbq)
9) Bing is really lousy, i prefer google search...
10) turn by turn navigation with voice direction.
11) Multi-tasking (i know wp7 is capable of multitasking, but wat i want is having the game to resume to its window without reloading another 1 min..)
12) screen capture (i want to show off my screen to my frens!
13) able to off the hot keys below my screen, when ever i play game, my fingers will touch it accidentally then everything in my games will be gone!
thats it for now! =D
I just want mine to have a bitten apple behind, and keep this sexy UI, so we could have updates

I so know what you mean about points 11 and 13. Games are so slow to load and have terrible resume function. If I get an email when playing a game, I dare not try and read it until I am finished gaming. So annoying.
The rest for me is not so important though I just dont get the custom ringtone thing.

5.I think MS can do that since WP7 are take control everything in the hardware..
ex. Battery charger.. you can't charge WP7 device if the OS is not running right ?
10.A to B using Bing map for navigation, and it useless when you live in other country. (I live in Thailand and Bing map is many suck for sure.)
11.It must wait too long since wee see they made it already.
12.With no multitasking, It's useless to release the screen capture app because we can't run this app in the background and use shortcut to make it capture right ?
(With this thing, I will already said we have wait too long.)
13.Why ? we have playing game for... ?? Entertainment right.... ?

And you have a HTC phone right? Get the damn flashlight app. It's pinned to my start screen so I can see where my dogs **** at night!!!
Are you in America? Because in America, there are no games for $10.99. Not one.
If you're in Australia or somewhere else, I can't speak for you, but where I live and where it is automatically assumed you are from unless you state so on this forum, is America.

A to B does not use Bing maps dude. I used A to B successfully in Germany when Bing Maps wouldn't work.
MS have minimum specs for hardware specs. The quality of the sensor is up to the OEM. MS can't do a damn thing about that without pissing off the OEM.
Saying we play games for entertainment isn't an excuse. That's like button-mashing on a console game and saying I was too excited so skill went out the door. Using the game controls while excited is also a skill.

Excellent list of wants! You won't get 'em. Well...at least not all of them...for a very long time. You'll likely be tired of your WP7 device long before you see the majority of those items and be looking at moving on to something new.
But hey! If you do hang on long enough, you'll get the majority of them.

Damn, it seems like you would settle for anything microsoft gave you, and then just make up excuses even if some of these things actually would make the OS better.
2. I don't see the problem with letting someone change the background. Both iOS and Android have this function.
3. It's interesting that he mentioned that some of the stock tiles look bad. Today, I showed my friend (who's a girl) a windows phone for the first time, and her immediate reaction was that the tiles were ugly. Unfortunately, like iOS, I doubt this function will come anytime soon without "unlocking" the phone.
6. I just have to say, that this so-called feature is really annoying. I really hope they change it. Or allow us to turn it off.
8. While I don't think most games are 10.99, I believe he was making a point (and a correct one) that prices in general are much higher compared to iOS and Android. Fortunately, prices should slowly decrease once the app number increases, more developers creating games with increasing quality, and with more people realizing how refreshing WP7 is.
9. Honestly, I don't have much experience comparing Bing and Google search, but even iOS lets you change their search engines (Bing, Google and Yahoo). I'm not sure if you can on Android... anyone know?
10. Do you really not want turn-by-turn gps? Or voice directions? Those were the things I LOVED about Android. Google maps is genius. Bing maps is good, but it could be so better if it has these functions. Oh, and allow voice searching for maps. (Edit: I actually tried A-to-B... that application is pretty bad. It's slow and looks pretty unprofessional. But hey, it's free)
13. I'm really surprised more people in general don't want physical buttons. I'm a big fan of the single, depressed button that Apple uses. It allows the phone to stay flat and still not by hypersensitive to accidental brushes of the finger. I'd like to think that older people (maybe >40 years old) would be more receptive to these new OSs if more phones had physical buttons (not necessary just one). But that's just me hypothesizing.

Like/Dislike from WP 7.5 in terms of laggyness and requiring more finger tapping...

Dislike:
1. People Hub
1. Pinning recent contacts
In the nodo build, it used to show individual contacts being animated then goes to homescreen but now only the whole screen is being animated then goes to homescreen.
2. Going back to start screen from People Hub
In the nodo build, it used to show individual texts or contents being animated from the bottom to top as it goes to homescreen. Not the case in the new updated version.
2. IE browser
1. More finger tappings
Can't directly access add favorites, favorites, and tabs in the new update. Sometimes i hit other functions and it frustrates me. I wish they could somehow still let us to have address bar and shortcuts to favs and tabs on the bottom by... maybe swipping the address bar sideways to access to the tabs and favs shortcut?
2. Going to the fullscreen
In nodo build, you could go to fullscreen in landscape mode with no address bar. In the new update, the address bar is now on the bottom, wish there was an option to hide it automatically
3. Animation when going to landscape mode
Not as slick as nodo build
4. Pinch and Zooming
It is nanoseconds unresponsive when compared the Nodo build
3. Zune
1. Accidental taps
Sometimes i accidently tap play smart dj mix when i was going for add to now playing
4. Xbox Live
1. Although this is con and pros at the same time, when i scroll through, it lags when my avatar shows up. Could this be the sign of having an outdated cpu/gpu snapdragon 1st gen or Microsoft were too lazy to optimize the hub?
Like:
1: Camera
No more laggyness when going from camera mode to the picture i just took!
2. People/Picture hub
1. More individual layers are being animated when opening these hubs! It looks sick!
2. Picture hub from the start screen now shows your pictures and they are alive! Though it just shows static picture from the start screen if you manually set the picture as a background in the Picture hub =[
3. Live Tiles
1. Live tiles for contacts and me hub flip instantly when there there are new updates! No more waitings for them to flip!
2. Lives tiles no longer disappear when i try to unpin my fav apps in start screen. This is great if you want to unpin multiples apps!
So what do i think of the new update? I love it! I still don't get why the animation lags when i go into the landscape mode in Bing? If Microsoft could fix those laggs from Bing and Xbox Live, and let us have the address bar and favs & tabs shortcuts on the bottom in the browser, i would be happier!
Feel free to leave comments if i am misinformed or whatever!
I'm actually ok with the Mango update. I never experienced Nodo, I had a HD7 when WP7 first came out, and I just picked up one off of CL for $80usd. It was a virgin HD7, no updates or anything. So I see why the guy hated it.
One thing I just hate, damn near everything is locked into Portrait mode!
On the HD7, with its LED, why must I constantly check the phone to see if I have a notification.

WP needs to have a one button tap to reach the keypad phone dialer instead of two taps. When you hit the phone tile it should bring up the dialer instead of the recent call history

I would absolutely HATE that.
I almost never physically punch in a number to call someone. Making the phone tile point at the dial-pad would mean that, almost every time I open that tile, I would have to use an additional tap to get out of the dial-pad and go somewhere that's actually useful.
Maybe have the option to pin the dialer to the homescreen, but don't make it the default behavior.

The call history is useless unless the person there actually took or received a call from you. The only other tab is... Voicemail.
People requires another tap. Dialer requires another tap. These are smartphones. It shouldn't be a ***** to get to the dialer. The dialer should be the default view. I'm surprised people think its cool to hide the dialer on a smartphone, and not give an option to set the default view. Going straight to history is retarded.
This is the first phone I've owned that actually made it harder to place calls.

But you have to remeber the main purpose of the device
---------- Post added at 01:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:13 PM ----------
Along with one touch to dialer keypad, I would like a better browser, multi select text messages, Video calling intergrated into OS instead of a Third party app, new hardware to the table such as solar power to help charge the battery on the go, LED notification a standard on all devices, ability to turn on/off new text message prompt onscreen, ability to access a mini menu to toggle airplane mode, vibrate, wifi when u touch them at the top of your screen. file explorer at least for the memory card, would be nice for the device also, Would like to see lanscape capabilities for the homescreen and throughout the OS. Innovative exclusive apps for WP7.
WP7 needs to bring something very unique to the table, something that sets it apart from its competition. I like how Apple used Siri to drive the sales of its phones, people saw that and went crazy. WP needs to take t aht same approach to drive sales.

did you try surfcube 3d browser?
it's actually quite good.
As far as the whole "main purpose of the device" thing, the main purpose is not to cater to how you individually think the Os should work...
Many people probably like how it is set up
i tried using surfcube when it first came out, didnt really like it. I just need something simple.
I really enjoyed when my coworker that was debating against iOS and WP7 stated that WP will surpass both iOS and Android in the near future in front of all of these iphone users. I wasnt expecting him to say that, but his opinion was unbiased and legit. He actually took the time to play with both of the devices and seeing how they work. I don blame him for liking Siri so much that it swayed him to buy the 4S, that was Apples whole intent and thats what WP has to do. He also mentioned the marketplace not having tons of apps, I couldnt contest him there. Then another Coworker chimed in and said you wont use half that **** so what does it matter. Valid Point.
But
I like the way Windows is headed, they want WP to succeed along with its valued customers, its up to us to help them and watch the OS succeed. Im not going anywhere, because I like WP and it suits me best. I cant tell you the last time I had to do a battery pull or reset the phone. thats priceless. Just a few things Windows need to work on to get things just right. Then innovate after that is the key.
To the OP some of those animations u were seeing were because things were still loading. The reason those animations are gone is because everything loads faster. I also actually like being able to access my tabs in landscape without having to turn the screen back over. To vetvito the apps do support landscape if the developer adds it. Most of my apps have this.

Wow, ok you know what, if you don't like it, there's the door.
Android has multiple mutilple fragmented devices for you to try out. Anything, just so long as you stop whining and accept the fact that this is a new OS. There's going to be growth before it gets to the point of the other two platforms. It's people like you who make these boards unbearable. This used to be a place where likeminded individuals could discuss an OS they love. You and your negativity is all but ruining it.
/there, think I covered everything
//seriously, this is the response people get for discussing shortcomings
/from people like you
Wow, you mad bro?
Actually, having no LED notification is quite fine with me. Imagine having an ugly orange blinking LED destroying the sexy and refined lines of my DVP!! Although, one of the things I loved about my HTC Fuze (Touch Pro) was the notification LED hidden behind the capacitive button that glowed... that was sexy. WP7 is missing a notification bar somewhere accessible from the start and lock screens so I know what I missed. Toast notifications are cool and all, but I don't always catch them on time.
While 9/10 calls are made to people in my contact list, I do miss the smart dialer we had in WM6.5. At least make the bottom half of the screen the dialer and the top half the history. If you dial a number, the history disappears and if you tap the history, the dialer disappears. I also wish we could individually pin numbers or sms from a person's contact instead of the entire contact. I call people way more than I text them so I don't need their entire contact information displayed when I pin a contact to the start screen.
Oh well, let's hope Microsoft hears our cries!!
