I've had my wife running custom roms but I'm tired of her complaining about somethings that seem strange... so I want to put her back 100% stock, including losing root and the latest HBOOT (so she loses NAND unlock as well). I honestly think something is wrong with her phone, which is why I want it back 100% stock so if it keeps doing funky things I can take it to Sprint. Her touchscreen is constantly losing responsiveness and the only way to get it back is to manually turn off the phone (with the power button), then turn it back on... also, her proximity sensor isn't working and she keeps hanging up the phone with her cheek...
Does anyone know where I can get a file for this? Thanks.
Also, if she decides, she hates it, is the latest OTA rootable yet?

If I could find it, I would have. All I can find are modified ROMs. Thanks for nothing.
I think you can just go into your phone settings and do an update. (System update >htc software update ) and it'll bring the phone back to stock. It'll probably overwrite everything ....
Wow this was hard

those will kill root, but they wont turn S-OFF to S-ON. That would be a different thing entirely. Plus, those are the older roms. Would need to take the update after updating to those... just sayin.
Since unrooting it will wipe data anyways, why not try downloading a new rooted stock ROM, wipe your data/cache/dalvik-cache (each twice just to be sure) and then flash the new stock ROM and see if that helps. If not, then you can go ahead and proceed with unrooting and bringing the phone back to Sprint for replacement/repairs. Just thinking this might be easier than unrooting, updating with OTA, and then finding out you want to root it again later....but that's entirely up to you.
Good Luck

i get a "can't connect to phone" error and a black screen with silver HTC letters on it on the screen of my phone when trying to flash the latest stock RUU. this is after the updater reboots the phone to try and flash.
i ran some root technique a couple days after i got my EVO (stood in line @ 5:30am to boot!). don't remember what it was though. toasts orig root i guess.
then it ran that sd card update (which didn't work for me). dunno if any of this matters, but wanted to provide back story.
why can't i flash??
Well depending on if you installed todays OTA update somehow changes my answer to your question.
For one if you did not install todays OTA update then the problem you are having is very commen and easily fixed. You'll notice that after it tells you there is no connection your phone should still be at the black screen with htc's logo. Without disconnecting or restarting your phone relaunch the RUU and go through it again. You should notice it will actually work the second time and eventually youll get a progress bar on your pc and eventually on the phone. This I am 90% certain should fix your problem. I've used the RUU numerous times and that has become standard procedure, although I don't understand why.
This will unroot your phone meaning you can then run unrooted or its now presentable if you have reason to take it in for replacement/warrenty issues.
But be warned! If you go back to stock in order to receive todays OTA update you will not be able to root your phone again using any current methods or files. Youll receive an error about the file being older than the new and wont be able to even partial root let alone get nand access.
On my end I unrooted today to test out the new features knowing full well I wouldn't be able to root again with the update installed. I figured I'd be able to use the RUU like you are because when it unroots a phone it takes it back to the default software from the day the phone was release but it was my luck that for whatever reason this new update effs up trying to use the RUU.
Is there a way to restore to factory settings that won't have the update installed or is it like how the 3GS was and once you upgrade thats it
Try flashing directly from the sd card, link is in my sig '(un)root'

aaaahhh. there it goes. thanks.
actually it was more i was having sd-card issues still. kept unmounting. rather happy w/ how the EVO works for now so rooting/modding isn't a priority. figured i'd reflash to see if it fixed the sd issue.
thanks!
Guys,
My Evo says Froyo 2.2 is avail for download when I check HTC Updates... I hit accept, it downloads, then asks if I want to install NOW... I HIT YES, and it takes me to the boot loader page, THEN DOES NOTHING.. It doesn't boot into recovery mode like it is supposed to, and it just sits on the Boot loader screen, NO TRIANGLE, NO BAR on the bottom showing the progress, IT JUST SITS THERE on the boot loader page with the 3 Androids on the bottom... I have already tried to hard reset the phone, BUT that didn't work... PLEASE HELP !!! Is there a way to HARD reset my EVO BACK to BEFORE ALL OF THE UPDATES??? IS THERE A WAY TO Force boot into recovery to apply the "update.zip" ??? Please advise...
Mine did'nt go no where near the bootloader screen...
I hit the download...then it just installed like any other app...except it brought me to a bar progress page a couple of times. Then the phone rebooted and whala...froyo.
I must say this...I was previosly rooted but unrooted to do it!!!
Are you rooted or unrooted to start off with?
Was rooted, but then I did the "update of June 29th" and ruined ALL of my fun... Is there even a way for me to root my phone now??? How do I get it to go into recovery?
Same issue
My EVO ISN'T ROOTED, and I'm having the same exact problem
You're hosed root wise until someone cracks the rom, if they crack the rom. Most likely you'll need to update to the official version once HTC releases an upgrade as they claimed they would eventually do on Twitter.
im not trying to root my phone, i just want froyo
right, I WAS rooted, the update in JUNE fixed that for me =(... NOW I just want FROYO which is available from Sprint/HTC OTA, it just wont install?????????? I think I can install it as an update.zip if I could get my phone into RECOVERY mode... When at the bootloader, if I hit Recovery, it just boots back to the BOOT LOADER????
I would suggest using this unroot program and make sure you use the 1.47 one because there are 3 different roms. This is what I did as I had the june update as you. This will guarantee that you have the right stock rom and are not rooted. Then try the update again...

This is the route I took and was just like you...I had no probs this way!
This is a great recommendation, but I haven't done any ROOT or ROMing to my phone since I've owned it, I've stayed true to the true image they released, and I'm not comfortable downgrading it to some other image that wasn't on the phone. I attempted to do the instructions outlined and I was unable to get pas the stage of pushing the:
RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_release_CL195459
to the phone. It says USB error, and I have debugging mode enabled.

I RE-Loaded this version, as the other "older" versions would not work (re-loaded, as this is what I already HAD on my phone)... It wiped the system, and ALL of my info/apps (make sure you back up) and then I was able to do the Froyo Update... YES !!!! Thanks...

Froyo Update Won't Install
To start off - I have never rooted my evo - my phone is running Android 2.1 update 1 supersonic - and I did not try to do the "pre-release" update put out by HTC. Since late last night, I have been trying to install Froyo through system updates (settings, system updates, htc software update). I am able to download the upgrade, which is about 80 MB, but for some reason the update will not install. When I click install now, my phone restarts in the bootloader. If I click on fastboot, it searches for an image on my SD card but can't find one. If I hit recovery, it just returns me to the main bootloader screen. The only thing I can do is reboot or shut down my phone. When my phone boots back up, it says the update is downloaded and ready to be installed. I have tried redownloading the update but the same thing happens. Any help would be appreciated, preferable without losing contacts and apps. I'm trying to save a factory reset for a last resort.
Thanks,
Nick
Nick,
Please read the earlier posts, and follow the link from Cardiox... He said the following...

Then read my posts, and you will see that I had the SAME problem you are having, and this worked for me... I posted the thread... It is pretty easy if you follow the instructions... Let me know if it works for you... Good luck !!!

I am not a genius by no means thus I am only sharing info that I have from personal trial and error. If you are going to a bootloader screen during this update process and your SD card is mounted then you most likely will need to bite the bullet and either do a factory reset or follow the link instructions so given. For some reason this update can not find the original factory code or RUU that it is trying to update. Sounds like your SD card is mounted but it can't find it...I would strongly consider just starting over with that link program. It does not root you it just puts you back square one with factory code. Then the update will have something to build off of...which you apparently don't have for whatever reason.
Ok, this is what I needed to know. I'm backing up my stuff with bitpim and will just do this. Thanks for all the help and the speedy responses!

Hey my evo doesnt want to update it!!?? why??? it reboots.. then i get the loading thing that is starting to do it. but then i get the TRIANGLE WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK.. with the little Android bOY.. LOL.. Could it be because its rooted? :/
HOPE ITS NOT BECAUSE OF THAT!! :/ HELP PLEASE
You don't need to install the latest 3.70 release...it is just a maintenance upgrade and has no improved functionality ...I hope you made a nandroid bc you can restore that to get back to your previous state. Good luck

Im new to all this man.. i dont really know anything.. like whats nandroid?? sorry for a stupid question.. but it says is has the Swype typing thing..
One more question.. what happens if i reset the Whole phone? like with the option it has to reset it to its FACTORY DATA RESET.. WILL IT WORK? OR WILL IT JUST NOT BOOT ANYMORE? OR WILL I STILL BE ROOTED? TH \ANKS
never accept a sprint upgrade with a rooted phone, it will mess your phone up...since you dont know what a nandroid is, im assuming you never made one..you are going to have to restore the phone back to original out of the box and a factory data reset is not the way to do it...
try this ...download the 3.30 release from this site and put in root of sd card http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
EDIT...in order for your phone to see this ..boot into bootloader..when phone is off, hold the volume button down and then hold the power button...the phone will see it and flash and update it...you will be back to stock and not rooted...you will have to re root the phone and then create a nandroid...
read this for more info on nandroid backup http://www.simplemobilereview.com/android-rooted-what-is-nandroid-backup/
to recap..never accept a sprint ota upgrade with a rooted phone, you will mess your phone up (as you already know) and once rooted, always create a nandroid...if you ever mess something up, you can restore that nandroid and restore your phone to working condition
also..once you are rooted and you want to update to the latest sprint over the air updates, search this forums for rooted stock RUU and you can then flash the lastest rom from sprint which is rooted...instead of trying to accept the OTA like you did
good luck
oK.. I WILL DO THAT WHEN I HAVE TIME.. LUCKLY MY PHONE DIDNT MESS UP TRYING IT.. LOL..
oK so installing the ROOTED STOCK RUU.. it will already be rooted, and i can still install sprints updates and upgrades with no problem correct?
THANKS FOR THAT BUD! SOUNDS EASY TO FACTORY RESET THE PHONE THANKS!!

Self confessed complete Android/Evo newbie here... I didn't even know how to access the settings on the phone until about 30 minutes ago. I've been working with iPhones since day one and have jailbroken many releases, so I get the general idea. It's actually my wife's "work" Android, and a co-worker of hers rooted the phone at some point. She tried to install the auto-download 3.70.651.1, it failed, and she gave it to me. Pulling the battery and resetting seemed to get things back to working, but now I'm taking over management of this phone and getting things right.
Here is where the phone is:
Nag screens about updated software seen. Update now selected. Update seemed to fail with a triangle/exclamation point, phone locked.
Pulling battery gets a normal reboot. Still get nag screen about "do you want to update"
Settings/aboutphone/software info shows "Software number 3.29.651.5" after failed update
Here's what I've done so far:
On software update screen, chose to "delete update". Rebooted. No more nag.
Turned off "scheduled check" for system software updates in Settings menu.
Figured out how to boot into the recovery menu. Looks like "Clockwork backup" was already installed. (ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1)
Created a nandroid backup using clockwork.
Rebooted phone
Mounted the SD card to my Mac, backed up the SD card including hidden files.
Verified creation of clockworkmod nandroid.md5 file
A few questions:
Once you restore to factory non rooted and then re root...you have install the rooted ruu to get the latest sprint upgrades Is this really necessary? Can I not just find a latest/greatest "rooted ruu" and overlay it on top of my current configuration?
I see some threads with titles like "[ROM] joeykrim-SDX-original-5.1 Odex *Stock Rooted 3.70.651.1* Dec 15th 2010". Is this an example of a "rooted ruu"?
This thread says I need to install "unrevoked 3.2.1" and "unrevoked forever". I'm guessing these are different tools than whatever was originally used to root my phone. Any chance installing them will conflict?
If I go back to a stock 3.3 ruu, what happens to all the applications and info already on the phone? Does it just overlay the software, or wipe everything clean?
TIA for helping an Android/Evo newbie out!
I'm sure this has been addressed but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I am bone stock (stock recovery and no custom rom) with just root on AT&T.
There are no missing deleted apps, as I replaced them previously but I still have never been able to do any of the OTA updates. It's starts and then fails.
Is there a way to unroot and the do an OTA update? I am trying to avoid Odin so I dont have to wipe everything and then have to start all over and adjust settings to my liking an also reinstall all of my apps.
I seen there is an option in the Super User app to "completely unroot and uninstall". Will choosing this option allow me to finally do OTA?
I've never installed a custom recovery or a custom rom so I don't know why OTA's always fail. At this point, I dont really care about having root since the only reason I previously wanted it was to remove at&t bloatware but I'd rather have OTA's at this point.
Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated! Please speak slowly and in layman's terms as I am an old fart that is still a bit of a n00b, lol.
Thanks!!

If you are on stock and have a valid AT&T SIM card in the device with full access to Wi-Fi and the AT&T network, you should be able to get an OTA update. Root could, however, indeed prevent an OTA update so your best bet may be to unroot. You could unroot and uninstall SuperSU from the SuperSU app just as you suggested. This should do it. However, if it doesn't and you would really want to avoid Odin and custom recovery, then you could do a 2-step manual update to 4.3 via stock recovery - first to 4.1.2 and then to 4.3. This will naturally update your phone to (full) stock 4.3 and we can then see if the phone will take the Kit-Kat OTA update from there.
You can see the instructions for the 2-step update via stock recovery in the thread below ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
1) Download the 2 zip files under update412.zip and update43.zip respectively to your computer
2) Copy the zip files to a good quality (micro) SD card
3) Place the card in your phone and boot to recovery mode by simultaneously holding down the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons
4) Hold the buttons until you see a blue message flash across the screen. Then release the Power button but continue to hold the Volume Up and Home button until you see the Android image appear. Then release the buttons
5) Use the volume up/down key to scroll to <mount from external storage> and the power button to select
6) Navigate to the first zip file (update412.zip) and install. Wait for installation to finish and your phone to reboot.
7) Complete set up. Check your phone settings. Then power off and reboot to recovery again.
8) Repeat the process for the second update file.
Well I tried the unroot feature in SuperSU and then uninstalled it.
I then tried the OTA update again and as usual, it failed about 30-40% in.
Ive never installed a custom recovery or a ROM so I don't get it. All I did was use Mr.Robinsons thread/directions on "how to root without tripping...." just for root only in the sticky.
I give up.:banghead:
Thank you though for responding. I may try the alternative way you suggested when I get time tomorrow and see what happens. Either that or screw it, im stuck with 4.1.1 and now I don't even have root. :banghead:

There have been several reports of failed OTA update so you may not be alone here. The process I advised is sure to take you to 4.3 JB without hassle. There is, of course, a manual update process from 4.3JB to 4.4.2 Kit-Kat (the latest OS). You will, however, require custom recovery for this ...

Well I finally was able to update via OTA. I had to actually use Kies and reinstall firmware and then go through all the updates, starting from scratch and took forever. What an absolute pain in the ass. Plus, after all this work to go from 4.1 to 4.4..........I can't see where it was worth it. I am now going through the tedious task of setting up all the settings and widgets and everything else the way it was or the way I like. So much for Kies actually backing up and "restoring" anything.
I have a couple of questions though....
1. Now that I am on 4.4..........how do I root this version (that works). I was reading the thread saying to use towelroot but it's not confirmed if this is still working after I guess you do the OTA after a certain date and it's now patched. I DO NOT want to install custom roms or anything else. All I want is root so that I can remove the AT&T crapware that is now even worse with this phone on 4.4.
2. I have a battery percentage that is in the LEFT upper corner that I can not figure out what program or app it is associated with and I can not get rid of it. This is not the % indicator that is part of Android and next to the battery icon on the right which is on and is okay, this is one the left.
3. I hate the new PIN lockscreen because the keypad/numbers are so small compared to old version. Any way to fix this?

Glad to know you were finally able to update. To try to answer your questions ....
1. Towelroot indeed comes well recommended for rooting on Kit Kat. You could, however, first try CF Auto Root which is one of the simplest approaches to rooting. If this doesn't work, you could try Option 2 in the thread below ... The thread also contains instructions to CF Auto Root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
2. I'm not sure what that battery indicator is. I run 4.4.2 also on my S3 but I cant see this. Can you try a reset to see if it would go away?
3. You can try removing this from settings.
Im glad you asked this...
I too noticed Im on 4.1.1 stock but rooted. I wondered if you could go to 4.4.2 as my phone tried to OTA update on its own last week and failed. I did not know if it was worth it to try or not another way. About the only thing I see that would want me to try is Google Wallet now working with S3 on 4.4.2 without having to jump through all kinds of hoops, mine used to work fine, but now GW will not open up all the way. Im not sure its worth doing if I have to re setup all my crap as I will be upgrading my phone whenever I want, just holding out to see if the Nexus 6 will be out end of the year and on AT&T..Im not liking that all the new phones are getting so freakin big, the S3 is just right and I dont want to have to end up with a damn Note sized phone but that is a whole other discussion
If you're still on 4.1.1, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, UNLOCK YOUR PHONE IF HASN'T ALREADY
otherwise you'll regret it
then the rest, tbh, you don't need to unroot at all to upgrade, just flash the firmware in ODIN or recovery..
edit: nvm it seems like you've already upgrade yours to KitKat
Sup, so in my last post I was told to read some info, get a better idea of what to do and how to move forward.. Problem being is, Where do I start? There is no actual help for the situation I am stuck in.
Im on a unlocked M8, no carrier version. I rooted the device and installed TWRP. This restored my Kit Kat 4.4.4 to 4.4.2. This is the google play edition, I believe.
Here is the Situation.
followed a youtube guide by "unlockr" which seemed to cover every aspect. after the root and with TWRP, phone bugged me to do a update to 4.4.4, I did, went back to TWRP, booted to system and got stuck in a loop.
I was recommended to delete the OTA file to stop this.. I did. Didnt stop the loop, bizarre...
Along this process, In fast boot menu my phone had a *tampered* label up top- further research this is nothing to worry about.
but without the OTA file, and just entering fastboot>twrp>system, this is where the boot loop still persists. S-On is back, no longer S-Off.
I've done my research etc and aware what needs to be done, but unsure on the safe methodology to reach this point. A friend who is helping me has better knowledge for SSung Galaxies and struggling to help me along.
He detailed I need to get back to 4.4.4(to stop this pissing 'you need to update your phone' pop up) - create a back up of this, then root and then from this point I can install custom roms ETC.
How do I install this, set up phone to a point Im happy, make the back up without the boot loop stopping me from doing so, then continue with experimentation etc...?
Like I said, Ive read plenty, but it doesn't help the situation I am in, so please, please don't just tell me to go educate my self, when there's no resources to help me with my problem. I still dont know which OTA is safe for me to use, or how to inject this without the bootloop ruining my life.. again.
P.S in work, Will reply when possible.

Also pretty sure flashing a recovery can't turn S-ON and you have to be 100% stock for that anyway (I believe) which you are not. How did you get S-OFF in the first place??
I've done my research etc and aware what needs to be done, but unsure on the safe methodology to reach this point. A friend who is helping me has better knowledge for SSung Galaxies and struggling to help me along. Samsung are completely different. I know as I've rooted my GF's and it was painful
I still dont know which OTA is safe for me to use, or how to inject this without the bootloop ruining my life.. again No OTA's are safe to use with a custom recovery.
There are a couple of things I'm not sure on, I think you have done the following so far
1. Unlocked using HTC dev
2. Rooted using the tool kit
3. Tried to install the OTA
4. Got a boot Loop
Is that correct?
Can you get into TWRP recovery?
Also you have a thread about this open already. Either delete that thread or this one.
As far as i know there is no way your android version would downgrade by flashing a recovery. Most likely is you were and still are 4.4.2 - Nope, Upon taking out the box on day 1, there was an update required and did it straight away.. then a smaller one. Guessing thats 4.4.3 and 4.4.4.
Golden rule - Never Never Never take an OTA when running a custom recovery - hahah, Ive established this now >.< I originally saw rooting as a "inject" sort of methodology.. before the os booted.. Thats not the case!
Also pretty sure flashing a recovery can't turn S-ON and you have to be 100% stock for that anyway (I believe) which you are not. How did you get S-OFF in the first place?? - I rooted following "TheUnlockr" video guide, It did say S-OFF, Bootloop and **** up with the OTA removed this I think. This was using the Hasoon2000 AIO tool.
Samsung are completely different. I know as I've rooted my GF's and it was painful - Good to know, I wont take too much advice from him, he did highlight a tool called Odin. Would that be any benefit to myself?

Basically.. yes.
Yes I can get into TWRP, but as I say, when I boot to system, this is where the loop starts.. phone starts up normally.. gives me 1min before restarting over and over.
I am sorry, Im aware that another topic is open. I did try to close it, dont have permissions on account. havent used forums in a few years and its all over the shop now hahaha.
Sorry for late reply.. hectic couple of days.
