[Q] - Do I need to root my Desire? - Desire General

hi all,
i just got myself a Telstra Desire. have been using HD2 for a while and decided to go onto the Android bandwagon.
In HD2, i know what to do for flashing ROM but not in android.
my question here is do i need to "root" my Desire if i want to install this ROM onto my Desire "RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe"?
My main purpose is to remove all the Telstra branded bloatware on my Desire.
Thank you for replying.

You do not need to root to install a RUU, you will need to create a gold card (search Google)

If you run into difficulty with creating the Gold Card, try using the Gold Card tool in my sig below.

thanks. will that a go later.

I'm in the same situation. I just gave my wife a Desire for Xmas and want to know if it is necessary to root the device to flash a custom ROM. And if so, can I use unrevoked3 to do so?

Yes, to flash a custom (unsigned) rom, then you will need to root your desire, you can use unrEVOked for this. If you are branded, then all you require to flash official (signed) roms (like the official ruu posted above) is a Gold Card to unlock your phones CID.

[Q] For most of you an extremely simple question.

I have updated my Desire with all official updates of HTC to date. I heard that if you do that with a Wildfire (that I also own and have done the same with) you loose the ability to root it. Is that also the case with a Desire?
Quick answer, no
Thanks. I'll root it this weekend with that with that Ubuntu Live CD method. Any tips before I start?
Just to make sure you understand everything about what you're doing before you do it.

Don't have to use a LiveCD - just get unrEVOked for Windows and use that
Well I know I have to root. (using that live-cd or unrevoked)
S-Off is not needed. (from what I have figured out.)
I follow the idiot guide of the starburst rom here. >>> starburstrom.wordpress.com/category/installation
I have a sim-locked phone but I'm not replacing the sim anyway.
Missed something?
So long as you have a custom recovery at the end of it you're good to go!

A custom recovery?
And do I need to leave the SIM in or out of the phone?
custom recovery will be installed by unrevoked. just follow onscreen instructions with unrevoked.

[Q] New DHD want to root, goldcard required?

Hi guys, just moved on from owning a desire to a dhd. Only had it for about an hour and i want to root and flash a custom rom onto it. Just a few questions though.
The phone is sim free and not locked to any network and it is running 2.2.1. Now i know that i am going to have to downgrade it first but will i need to create a goldcard first?
software number is 1.72.405.3
thanks.
Goldcard is not needed.

Goldcard??

Is it possible to make a goldcard for my HTC Desire if it is not booting into recovery e.g can i make one on the pc?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
heres a link to a guide to make a goldcard. i dont remember having to do it in recovery when i made mine a long time ago, but i would recommend just rooting it with unrevoked. saves all the hassle
@Kokocabana
I'm a noob with a Telstra branded Desire 8183. Does unrevoked kill the need to use a goldcard completely? I researched a lot but can't find whether it works on a branded desire. I plan to use GingerBurst ROM so I'm hoping this will all be compatible.. I really don't wanna brick this phone!
Any help is greatly appreciated

You need a goldcard, if you want to install a ruu and get an cid error. Using unrevoked cannot avoid this.
No goldcard required, I used unrevoked and flashed cm7 rom.. no problems at all

Ruu means stock rom, so the official released roms by htc. Has nothing to do with customs roms.
Ahh ok thanks for clearing that up for me, I'm new to all this

[Q] Android Revolution HD 8.1 install question

Hello, i have 2 questions before installing this rom on my unlocked AT&T htc one m8.
1. can i put the rom on my external micro sd card, and not in virtual SD card, so i can flash it from the external sd card.
2. Most important, I got my htc one m8 from AT&T in the U.S, but i unlocked it, and put viper rom on it. and i'm using it in europe.
Now i want to try this rom, but i missing important info:
In the install process, can i chose "htc one (internional)" - As i using this in EU, and not the second option? (U.S AT&T).
Or this is not recommended, and might hurt my device?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards

For question 1 yes you can install it from ext-sd but internal sd is safe. Also you can try from usb-otg.
For qs-2 It wont hurt your device. If you are supercid you can choose any one you like. But I would recommend that you try the international option.Best of luck in flashing.

what is that? i dont have s-off if thats what you mean. i only open bootloader and flash the viper rom via the toolkit.
Should i still be able to chose the international option?
Best regards,
