[Q] For most of you an extremely simple question. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have updated my Desire with all official updates of HTC to date. I heard that if you do that with a Wildfire (that I also own and have done the same with) you loose the ability to root it. Is that also the case with a Desire?

Quick answer, no

Thanks. I'll root it this weekend with that with that Ubuntu Live CD method. Any tips before I start?

Just to make sure you understand everything about what you're doing before you do it.

Don't have to use a LiveCD - just get unrEVOked for Windows and use that

Well I know I have to root. (using that live-cd or unrevoked)
S-Off is not needed. (from what I have figured out.)
I follow the idiot guide of the starburst rom here. >>> starburstrom.wordpress.com/category/installation
I have a sim-locked phone but I'm not replacing the sim anyway.
Missed something?

So long as you have a custom recovery at the end of it you're good to go!

A custom recovery?
And do I need to leave the SIM in or out of the phone?

custom recovery will be installed by unrevoked. just follow onscreen instructions with unrevoked.

Just use ROM Manager It will install recovery without adb or a computer. Just do it through an Android app.
But if you want to use AmonRA, you can follow any of the above links. You'll need the Android adb tool and drivers I believe (if you are running on Windows or Linux). On Mac, all you need is adb.

So basically... I have a unrooted, unhacked etc. Desire.. I want to test some of the new 2.2 roms..
Can I, without my phone being rooted, use "rom manager" from the market and flash a custom recovery, from where I can flash roms, radios etc.? Or do I have to something before I can utilize the power of "rom manager"?.... What about the new "fake-flash" released a couple of days ago?
Excuse me, but i'm coming from an HTC Hero where the only thing you did, was using flashrec...
I'm a little confused with all the guides around here.. Some say you have to use a PC/mac (I have a mac) to "root" the desire... Others say that there is a simpler way... I'm looking for the safest and simplest ... I like when procedures are convenient

To root it you'll need a pc/mac running linux, windows or whatever macs run. Afterwards there are workarounds that makes flashing ROMs relatively simple, without having to initiate recovery form a computer first. So step one: follow the root guide in the stickied thread.

Looking to root friends desire - unrevoked...

Hi, i've been looking around to help my friend with his new desire,
I would like to see if this works, according to my research...
If I ran the phone through unrevoked, would this root the phone?
And in turn, let us install rom manager + clockwork mod?
I don't have much experience around here as I am still looking about rooting my nexus
Hope you can help
Details needed.
Bootloader info, phone info...

I'm gonna have to ask about the bootloader info, but it is currently running stock (latest) which I think is 2.2?
EDIT: How do you get into the bootloader? Is it power+ volume down?
Yes.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
If its running 2.2, chances are very high that you can root it with unrevoked. Make sure the hBOOT version is 0.93.xxxx

If its the same as mine, yes unrevoked will do. However, i was having issues with CwM before so now im using amon ra recovery.just a heads up

Ye, thats right, I just found out that it is 0.93
So my plan on my original post will work?

It will work. As long as the drivers required are properly installed. And you don't need s-off unless you are planning to change the boot partitions (eg. Change from Stock hBOOT to CM7r2 hBOOT to get more space for apps)

If your still not 100% sure I don't think you should even try rooting your friends phone. You'll need the htc usb drivers installed on pc, make sure the htc sync apps is not installed.
Use unrevoked to root and install cwm recovery, from there you can install any of the great roms.

Please read the rooting faq in my signature. There's also a guide there which incorporates pre requisite information which (for some unknown reason) is missing from most other guides.
But read the faq too. It's not about blindly following steps. It's about understanding the process and what you are doing.

[Q] What is the best method for me to get perm root?

Okay so I just got my G2 today and I want to perm root it and install CM7 but I've heard of all of the touble it can be to root the Tmobile G2 so I wanted to know if there was anyone who knew what steps I should take to not brick my phone. Heres the info on my about phone.
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: 12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3
Kernel Version:2.6.35.10-g96de068
[email protected] #1
Build number: 2.15.531.3 CL82286 release-keys
Now I would like to avoid having to use anything that requires ADB because I have not used it in a long time and do not have it on my pc. Plz and thank you.
BTW: I just noticed that my phone has been requesting that I perform and android update that leads to the same 2.3.4 version.
You'll have to downgrade, and will need to use adb for it.
Here is the downgrade guide, which links to the wiki guide.
-Nipqer
Yeah I see it. Looks like lots of work oh well here I go.
-Got my serial number so I guess that means I set up adb

Its a lot of steps but its pretty well documented. Just be sure to read through before you start so you know where you're going.
Hey when you downgrade it to froyo the easiest way to root is to use the app called z4 root or universal androot they work pretty well!

Couldn't he use AMT 1.8.5 after he downgrades?
Downgraded and rooted my Desire Z few days ago. Took about 3 days of trying out several other guides.
This is what I did:
(Usual caveat applies. ie: Don't blame me, if you brick your phone or mess up badly)
A. Install ADB
1. Used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926521
2. And used mini-adb (RunMe.bat)
B. Downgrade to Froyo
1. Used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
2. Put all required files in mini-adb folder
3. Perform the guide's procedures (copy/paste commands into adb console):
- Gaining Temp Root
- Changing Version Number to Allow Downgrade
- Temp-Rooting to Backup (fastboot) - THIS FAILED
- Creating a Goldcard
- Performed the downgrade procedures again - THIS WORKED
4. Downgrade completed
(Note: with hindsight, creating goldcard should have been an earlier step)
C. Rooting downgraded Desire Z
1. Used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
2. Put all required files in mini-adb folder
3. Perform the procedures:
- 2 through 4.a.3 (rooting procedures)
- 5 (verify success)
- 6 (cleanup)
4. Rooting completed
Once rooted, I immediately backed up a clean image of the rooted froyo with CWM.

[Q] [Question] Temporary rooting Desire Z

Hello All,
I'm looking for a way to temporary root my Android Desire Z ... What should I need to know at first, and what is the tools that I should use. Also, how can I unroot the phone after that ... Thanks.
Assuming you are on gingerbread, run the 'Gaining Temp-root' and 'Temp-rooting to backup' from this guide
To undo it, just reboot the phone.

im just kidding, dont temp root - full root. there few good reasons not too, amd you can always unroot your phone.
anyway why do you need temp root? something specific i gather?

Hello,
I need to test some apps that requires root access .. so I wanted to temporary root the device and then unroot it once finished using the apps.
The guide nipqer linked you to will suffice, after your test is complete I suggest you consider permentley rooting your phone as I'm sure you will be most happy this way

Have a look at this guide which will help you to install Android 4.0.4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1955842
these guides might help to root your phone, but not sure that rooting will remove sim-lock.

Please follow the above guides. I believe they are the simplest guides there is on rooting wildfire, and do read and understand everything before attempting to root.
If you have a question, please first try searching it in the wildfire forums, you are likely to find your answers that way.
Cheers
P.S. - wait, if you are not rooted, how do you have clockworkmod? CWM isn't an application.

I said I had clockworkmod, I didn't say it worked! and it doesn't without it being rooted.
So before I update I want to backup all the original ROM.
Also if I update will this unlock the device to any network as I have had other windows phones that did?
I just don't want to brick it!!!!
Cheers

okay,I will try to be clear as possible, follow the given guide to root your phone, I used that guide to root mine, and was successful at the first try. so, if you follow that guide word to word, there should be no problems. you'll be rooted within 10 minutes.
while rooting you'll have to reset your phone,so contacts and mssgs will be lost. also keep a backup of your SDcard.
this process will also install clockworkmod recovery, so after rooting you'll be able to backup your current ROM using CWM. after that you can flash any ROM you like.
as for simlock I'm not quite sure rooting will simunlock your phone. there is a thread about this,so please read that.
I hope this answers all your questions, if not, at least some. good luck..!
I will post the link to the guide again.
