Well, ill start off by saying "Im james! "
I recently made the switch to android because i absolutely love the capabilities and the functionality. I got myself an Incredible. Rooted and and installed Redemptive revolution and got sucky battery life. Then yesterday it starts raining and gets really cloudy. I lose my 3g coverage about an hour into the storm. Im guessing this is normal? Well i decide to install Myn's two point two, with kinxklick's LV kernel in an attempt to get better battery life.
My current standing: Im running Myn's 2.2 with LV kernel and my 3G is still timing out and crappy. My brother's Dx gets Fair signal during the storm, should i be worried about my phone? Ive wiped several times and i still get like 60 kbps down while he gets above 400 kbps.
So my questions are:
1. Is there something wrong with my incredible? Or is the X's signal generally better then the HTC's?
2. What ROM and kernel combination would give me the best battery life?
Its at :
Android System: 70 %
Display: 16%
Cell Standby: 14%
During the time writing this, my 3G has dropped at least 6 times. Is it normally like this during cloudy rainy weather?
Thank you in advance, and i Love the site by the way!

Lou's #4 is kicking ass with both his and warm.... fast and smooth, battery seems to be killer also.
Your going to heat this 50 times, but this is in the wrong place.
Nothing is (probably) wrong with your phone and its best to try several combinations. I am using MIUI to great success.

Oh, one more thing. The X has 2 antennas. The incredible has only one.

0) This forum is for discussion of development issues, not "which is right for me" or "how to use" issues... this should probably be posted in Q&A or General.
However, I hate leaving a question unanswered, so:
1) Signal strength is not related to which ROM you are using, and rather which radio. Look in settings->about phone->Software Info->Baseband version. The 3 current radios are 2.15.00.07.28, 2.15.00.09.01, and 2.15.00.11.19. Depending on your location, one of these three is the version you should use. BE CAREFUL - FLASHING ROMS IS VERY SAFE, BUT AN ERROR FLASHING THE RADIO WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE.
You could also try *228 to update your roaming as well.
2) This is constantly debated. Typically, horrible battery life is the result of an app running constantly or keeping the phone from sleeping. How does your awake time compare to your up time? Personally, I find that CyanogenMod 6.1 with incredibleK's kernel #18 gives me best battery life... I usually charge it every night to be safe, but can comfortably go two days of moderate use without draining the battery.

Sorry about the wrong forum, but im in the middle of flashing skyraider (3.5?) with King klicks #6. As for awake time and uptime, it used to be roughly the same. Give or take a few min. Ive speed tested on warm, and it still hasnt passed the 100 kbps mark Hows Cyanogen running for everything else?
Also, i cant get passed 1x on skyraider, it stays on "Turning on"
My radio is 2.15.00.07.38
Double check, my awake time is exactly the same as my up time.(Edit: Nevermind, i locked it and now the uptime is 2 min more than the awake time.)

That is a sign that either (a) you are literally using your phone 100% of the time, which will indeed suck batteries down very quickly, or (b) you have some app that is constantly asking for attention and wont let the phone sleep. By comparison, my uptime is 11+ hrs, and my awake time is about 3 hours. It's awake when I am using it, but it sleeps other times (can still receive calls/email/sms in this state). If your phone isn't sleeping when you're not using it, battery wil suffer.
EDIT: If you just rebooted, then it will of course be equal. You should check after you have been booted and running on battery (not plugged in) for a few hours.

No that doesnt work
Try a new radio. Legit, it will probably help a lot.
Research how to check an md5 sum before you actually flash it through hboot, but past that you're set. If the md5's don't match, redownload.
I suggest the 11.19 radio (The new EVO radio). 9.01 also worked well for me, but the EVO one works wonders. I also have a wannabEVO phone, so that might just be me.

Hey all,
I just picked up a G2 and got all excited and dumped Virtuous onto it (I'm very used to Sense).
I soon realized that the battery life of this thing is ridiculously bad. I put CurrentWidget on it (I switched from Android on HD2), and noted that it's draining, on standby, at ~60-80 mA. That's very high; on the Android on HD2, it sometimes is as low as 7-9mA (on average).
I'm not doing anything particularly special, and I've got the same settings on both. It's unlikely it's the reading, as the percentages go down like crazy on the G2 (or get stuck; it often gets stuck at 96% for an hour or two and then goes down very quickly). Quantitatively, it's about 1% per five or ten minutes, while I could get maybe 1% per half hour or 45 minutes on the HD2.
Has anybody done any CurrentWidget tests on their G2? I've searched around, and it seems that not many others are using this test (it's very popular over with the HD2 kids. ). Does anybody have numbers they'd like to share? I'd be very interested in seeing them!
I'll, meanwhile, try the AOSP and stock build again to see how the widget performs on that. I'm very sure this isn't normal, though...
Thanks!
The norm for me is 28-38ma on stand by, you will not be able to get it as low as the HD2. It stays at 100% for about 1 1/2 hours after that it drops and at the 60's slows down again.

Will post screenshots and logs of information on apps running then make a guide about what settings need to be where and what files need to be deleted and added.

That's odd, though. I would've expected otherwise, considering that Android on HD2 requires most things to read/write to SD card, which would supposedly be more power-hungry than writing to NAND...
Nope; I've run tests on almost pure stock builds (just Astro + CurrentWidget + SetCPU installed, but I don't even have SetCPU running...). Happens on both Virtuous and Villain (Sense builds). Thanks for your input!

That's amazing. Please do post additional information when you have time! I'd be happy to spend some time in the coming weeks to replicate your behavior.
for some reason my g2s battery got better as time progressed.
fresh out the box=needed 2 charges a day
3 weeks later= 7am-10pm still at 36% with HEAVY use.
Shouldn't Standby eat more than the HD2 based on it being 4g? Also I use the GSM/CDMA Auto which has increased my battery life significantly. *#*#4636#*#* phone info. My time without signal was around 9% and is down to 0 since changing it. I am a pretty heavy user and I usually go about 24-30 hours on a single charge. (I'm using the chitech 1800 mah battery though.)
Edit: I'm OC'd to 1497 with 245/245 screen off profile.

I really want to get that type of battery life! It might have something to do with batterystats.bin being well conditioned. I've tried running to zero and it seems to help a little little bit...

That might be true, although I don't have any 4g around in my area. That said, I think HSPA+ is just another bit onto HSDPA, which is what the HD2 has anyway. I don't think it should consume that much more power... (3x fold!). I've tried switching to GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL), but I was using GSM Auto already. We'll see if it helps too!
Thanks guys for your input and feedback; I hope it'll help others, too.

Was this happening before you rooted your phone and installed a different ROM?
Sent from my other girlfriend, according to my current girlfriend.
The Incredible generally displays fewer bars of service than other Verizon phones, but it's still getting the same signal. I can sit right next to my dad with his Droid, I'll have 1 bar and he'll have 4, but we both have the same dB for signal. And it never loses 3G unless I'm in a well-insulated building. I might suggest exchanging your phone as it sounds like you may have a defective antenna.

I was thinking about doing that, because my download speed wont pass 200 kbps and its annoying the hell out of me! Its going on and off 3g all the time, so its killing my battery too.
As a base comparison, while I was running the stock HTC software (3.70) I could go 15-17hrs a day on a single charge. My typical day was to unplug the phone at about 8am and plug back in at about midnight. My average usage of the phone would be a little time in Angry Birds, a lot of crossword puzzles with an app called Shortyz (typically 2-3hrs a day), a lot of texting and email and some phone calls. Sometime I would have some usage of Google Nav. Wifi would be on 100% of the time, even when not connected to a network. When I finally plugged the phone back in I would typically have between 20-30% of the battery life left.
I flashed MikFroyo last week. Initially I did not wipe the user data first. I did wipe cache/dalvik. Updated profile and PRL on first boot. Everything was working fine, however, battery life was terrible. My typical battery life running MikFroyo has been 7-8hrs. About 1/2 what I was getting. And, with a typical day keeping me out of the house and away from a charger for 15hrs or more this is not a good situation. I am still using the phone the same way.
A few days ago I thought maybe the better actually had more life but the battery status was reporting it wrong. So, I wiped the battery stats, ran the battery down to 0 and then fully charged the phone. So far, I am getting the same reporting on the battery life.
Yesterday I had 100% at noon after another charge and by 6pm I was down to 20%. I love this rom and would like to keep running it if I can figure out how to get my old battery life back.
Thinking that it may have had something to do with the full wipe first I reflashed the rom, this time I did a full wipe/cache/dalvik twice before flashing the rom again. Battery life is still horrible. This does not make sense to me with MikFroyo using the same kernel as the HTC software and with all the bloatware that was removed plus my use of Titanium to freeze even more useless apps.
Anyone have any ideas what I can check to try to restore my original battery life?

If it is staying awake for some reason, what would you suggest I look at to fix it?

It depends what is causing it.
I just checked again and the uptime and awake time are only a few seconds apart. So, it appears that I do have an issue with the phone remaining awake after it turns off the screen.
Back to my original question in regard to this: What should I check as possible causes?

I've been on Mik's ROM for a weeks now, and I LOVE it!
Can't give you a battery comparison as I am on a 3500 mAh battery with netarchy 4.3.1-cfs-nohavs-nosbc Kernel.
You may want to flash a new Kernel and see if that helps as well. Won't be an apples to apples comparison with the stock sense with stock kernel, but if you are looking for better battery in general, I know that it has definitely improved mine.

Many people have reported 100% awake time with the 1.90 and different ROM/Kernel combinations. There is debate on what it actually is ... I won't go into that but give it a shot you shouldn't have ill effects and I'm betting the 100% wake will be fixed. If not you can always go back to 1.90. If you search there are plenty of threads on this. It was just discussed in the Mik thread also. Calkin has a whole thread on it. I'm on xda app right now or I'd post a link its "all radio wimax pri versions" or something. Just grab the 1.77 pri zip and flash away. Let me know how it works.

I had an issue with battery life with the first MikFroyo I flashed and the PRI downgrade was the answer. Also a netarchy kernel helped even more.
I flashed PRI v1.77 and netarcs 4.3.1 cfs-havs-nosbc. Will let you all know how it goes. I don't want to jump the gun either way without giving it some time to really show me what it will do.
There is nothing wrong with the PRI or the rom! You should find what is keeping the phone up. It certainly is not a PRI!

Apparently there is still something going on. The Uptime vs Awake time seems to be more in line now but the battery is still dropping like a rock. It has only been off the charger a couple of hours with about 10min of uptime and it has already lost 25% of the battery.
So far today all I have used the phone for is about 20 minutes worth of calls and three text messages. Any other suggestions about what I should check?

List what Apps you have installed, how often you have stuff set to sync, etc.
What are your current awake vs Up times? Are you using it as much as your up time says?
Also, netarchy says
NOTICES: If you are noticing abnormally high battery drain and/or uptime, and you've updated to PRI 1.90, it has come to my attention
that this PRI has been problematic for a number of people, often resulting in large uptimes and/or poor battery life.
This issue affects people regardless of whether or not they are using a custom kernel
Downgrading your PRI and NV to 1.77 has been reported to resolve this issue.

Yep, I like it a LOT. I haven't gotten any FC or problems except with SetCPU but that was because I had set on boot checked. Everything else is phenomenal! It seriously is like SBC without the SBC, netarchy is the man. I'm off the charger for 3 hours today and at 90% after medium-heavy use (GPS, Gmail, etc).
With all the advice you're getting here (cannot necessarily disagree w/ anything altho I've had no problems on PRI 1.90)...once thing to keep in mind. Make sure you give any new kernel you flash 2 to 3 full battery cycles (full charge to dead back to full). You won't get a good idea for how it's working w/out a large enough sample size.
Myns warm two point two RLS 5 pri/nv 1.9. Phone has been on 5 hours standby. I have 24% left, what's the problem? I haven't used it much st all since I'm currently at work. 6% without a signal so that isn't it, then what is? Anyone got any ideas?
Swyped from my sexy EVO.
Do you have wifi or 4G on...? 1.99 has been said to cause battery life problems with people. You can try downgrading to 1.77.
Go to settings/about phone/battery use and see if there are any apps running at the top of the list. My phone was awake all the time and I found "Flight View" to always be at the top of my batt usage so I un-installed it. I also went to settings/applications/running services and closed out a bunch of apps that I didn't need running.
Since I killed the flight time my battery time has gone from 10-12hrs at the most to a steady 16-18. Over the weekend I got 32hrs on a charge which has never happened before.
Wifi for 2 hours and awake time was 1 hour.

Thats with SetCPU maxed out on the SZ setting as well. I woke up today and it took my phone almost 30 minutes to drop from 100% to 99%. A first since I bought it.

Even on 1.9? Also do I have to fully reflash or just dalvik/cache?

It's probably safer to reflash.
boot into recovery
flash calk's format all
flash rom
flash kernel (if you're using one)
reboot
Should I do a nandroid also?

Will it work with mkfroyo 4.4 and how heavy is your usage? I'm using netarchy-toastmod-4.2.2-cfs-nohavs-universal-signed for my kernel and I go from 100-99 in about a min with all radios and syncs off. Is it also safe to just flash a kernel or should I wipe everything and flash it?
either wipe battery stats or new kernel

I think I'll try netarchys 4.3.2 with 1.77, sounds good?

Welcome to the EVO
No, more like welcome to pri 1.9. I used to get 15 hours light usage, and 12 on moderate. This radio was a stupid idea, I have yet to find a kernal that doesn't tear my screen.

Myns warm two point two RLS 5 pri/nv 1.9. Phone has been on 5 hours standby. I have 24% left, what's the problem? I haven't used it much st all since I'm currently at work. 6% without a signal so that isn't it, then what is? Anyone got any ideas?

If that time without signal is ACTUALLY accurate, and not the classic 'time without signal bug' (I'm not sure if it exists for these newer ROMs at all), then yes, that's probably it.
If you a) have EVDO 3g and/or 4g turned on and
b) are going in and out of signal
that probably means that, wherever you are, you are typically having VERY POOR signal. Do you typically find very low reception bars around wherever you were?
One thing that murders smartphone batteries is low reception.
When reception is weak, the phone gets 'Louder' so that it can communicate with the tower. This requires a LOT of battery power to achieve.
One of the problems with the CDMA Samsung Galaxy S series is exactly this. If I'm in certain towns around my city (Buffalo, NY), my Fascinate battery goes in a few hours (fading in and out of reception, or just very weak reception the whole time, or at least going in and out of EVDO) from a full charge to dead.
If you're actually getting poor reception (as Sprint doesn't offer the best signal strength everywhere), but you usually keep signal (where some other Sprint phones won't, because their antennas can't get 'Loud' enough), your battery is disappearing as a result.
If you can open up Spare Parts app, look at Battery History, then change 'Other usage' to 'Partial wake usage', you might find a culprit killing your battery if you had a lot of awake time. Otherwise, I'd pin it on reception.
BTW, using WiFi instead of EV or 4g uses about 1/5 of the battery per data that you transfer, and the savings is even greater if you have very weak cell signal. Just food for thought.
Ok, it is definitely not an app doing it. I got kik messenger on lock down(force stop when done using) and why does it die fast on wifi too?

flash pri and nv to 1.77 and flash a different kernel. i use sbc, also after the first day u wont see better battery life , for me it takes couple of days. for the first like 2 days i get horrible battery life then like by 3-4 day im good or atleast getting better
Well everynight before I go to sleep I charge my phone fully and unplug it before I sleep
Usually I would only lose about 1 % or 2% overnight
But this week I would lose over 60% over night! Its outragous!
I looked at what was killing my battery and "Cell Standby" and "Phone idle" were both over 45 - 49% !!
Anyway I can fix this problem??
Thank You

There may be some random issue with your nearby cell tower, causing the signal to be weaker than normal (particularly 3G). This might cause your phone to be constantly looking for the tower, and killing the battery. I've noticed this to happen at my house, although the difference in battery usage is not as severe as what you describe.
If you haven't changed anything on your phone, I would just leave it be for a few days and see if improve on their own.

As redpoint73 said .its probably because of weak 3g signals ,set your phone to "2g only"
overnight and see if it make any different. i dont think different radio will help ,different kernel might do .

Your not alone ferocious. I have the same issue its driving me nuts. Mine's skyrockets to damn near 50 percent. I'm living in california. But running sense seems to fix it for some reason.

Yeah its really killing my battery overnight!
Im Also in California
as of right now here is what is killing my battery
Cell Standby- 47%
Phone Idle- 44%
Voice Calls- 8%
Display 3%
Im Running GingerVillain 1.5 with Stock Radio
Its overclocked to 1.2ghz and has profiles with SetCPU
Wifi Only on When im using the phone
gps is off
Screen brightness is very low
only using 2G
this is very frustrating
Turn off data completely and see if it still drains. If that stops the drain, change your radio.
Remember you must be radio s-off to do that. Root with gfree (you'll need the cm 6.1.0 kernel or stock).

There's no good answer to that. What radio is the "best" varies by geographic location. The best way to find out is by trial and error, although the newest radio tends to be the best place to start. Some people seem to be having some decent luck with the latest AUS radio. But like I said, its all just trial and error. I remember on my last phone (Touch Pro 2) people sometimes reported better battery life and reception by flashing older radios.
EDIT: I just noticed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990860
Some people claim EXCESSIVE battery drain using the newest AUS radio, while others do not. So it still goes back to my statement that trial and error is your best bet.

Im running on GingerVillain 1.5 with stock radio as well
I don't use the profiles on setcpu, they're confusing and annoying. I don't even keep it overclocked much, only when I use my phone alot. When my phone is idle I set it back down to 806, sometimes even 700.
Wifi is on all the time when I am at home
GPS = on for me (at home)
screen brightness is like 40%
I keep 4g on all the time as well
At night, I keep my phone unplugged at 100% than the next day its at 99%
Ill use it for maybe 20 minutes and its at 90%. After about an hour and a half it goes to like 75% than ill put it back on standby for maybe an hour than its at like 73%
To sum it up, if its in standby, its fine
If im using it from 100% to 0% it lasts a good 3-5 hours depending on if im streaming vids, listening to music, and browsing the internet.
Im testing the waters with different settings and roms as of now..
GingerVillain is my favorite so far.

I have no idea why when my phone is on standby the battery dies pretty quick
It has pretty good life when I use it but when I don't the battery seems to die pretty quick
And my phone tells me that cell standby is always using aroun 40% of my battery and I just can't find a way to lower it
