Well, ill start off by saying "Im james! "
I recently made the switch to android because i absolutely love the capabilities and the functionality. I got myself an Incredible. Rooted and and installed Redemptive revolution and got sucky battery life. Then yesterday it starts raining and gets really cloudy. I lose my 3g coverage about an hour into the storm. Im guessing this is normal? Well i decide to install Myn's two point two, with kinxklick's LV kernel in an attempt to get better battery life.
My current standing: Im running Myn's 2.2 with LV kernel and my 3G is still timing out and crappy. My brother's Dx gets Fair signal during the storm, should i be worried about my phone? Ive wiped several times and i still get like 60 kbps down while he gets above 400 kbps.
So my questions are:
1. Is there something wrong with my incredible? Or is the X's signal generally better then the HTC's?
2. What ROM and kernel combination would give me the best battery life?
Its at :
Android System: 70 %
Display: 16%
Cell Standby: 14%
During the time writing this, my 3G has dropped at least 6 times. Is it normally like this during cloudy rainy weather?
Thank you in advance, and i Love the site by the way!

Lou's #4 is kicking ass with both his and warm.... fast and smooth, battery seems to be killer also.
Your going to heat this 50 times, but this is in the wrong place.
Nothing is (probably) wrong with your phone and its best to try several combinations. I am using MIUI to great success.

0) This forum is for discussion of development issues, not "which is right for me" or "how to use" issues... this should probably be posted in Q&A or General.
However, I hate leaving a question unanswered, so:
1) Signal strength is not related to which ROM you are using, and rather which radio. Look in settings->about phone->Software Info->Baseband version. The 3 current radios are 2.15.00.07.28, 2.15.00.09.01, and 2.15.00.11.19. Depending on your location, one of these three is the version you should use. BE CAREFUL - FLASHING ROMS IS VERY SAFE, BUT AN ERROR FLASHING THE RADIO WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE.
You could also try *228 to update your roaming as well.
2) This is constantly debated. Typically, horrible battery life is the result of an app running constantly or keeping the phone from sleeping. How does your awake time compare to your up time? Personally, I find that CyanogenMod 6.1 with incredibleK's kernel #18 gives me best battery life... I usually charge it every night to be safe, but can comfortably go two days of moderate use without draining the battery.

Sorry about the wrong forum, but im in the middle of flashing skyraider (3.5?) with King klicks #6. As for awake time and uptime, it used to be roughly the same. Give or take a few min. Ive speed tested on warm, and it still hasnt passed the 100 kbps mark Hows Cyanogen running for everything else?
Also, i cant get passed 1x on skyraider, it stays on "Turning on"
My radio is 2.15.00.07.38
Double check, my awake time is exactly the same as my up time.(Edit: Nevermind, i locked it and now the uptime is 2 min more than the awake time.)

That is a sign that either (a) you are literally using your phone 100% of the time, which will indeed suck batteries down very quickly, or (b) you have some app that is constantly asking for attention and wont let the phone sleep. By comparison, my uptime is 11+ hrs, and my awake time is about 3 hours. It's awake when I am using it, but it sleeps other times (can still receive calls/email/sms in this state). If your phone isn't sleeping when you're not using it, battery wil suffer.
EDIT: If you just rebooted, then it will of course be equal. You should check after you have been booted and running on battery (not plugged in) for a few hours.

Try a new radio. Legit, it will probably help a lot.
Research how to check an md5 sum before you actually flash it through hboot, but past that you're set. If the md5's don't match, redownload.
I suggest the 11.19 radio (The new EVO radio). 9.01 also worked well for me, but the EVO one works wonders. I also have a wannabEVO phone, so that might just be me.

Do you have wifi or 4G on...? 1.99 has been said to cause battery life problems with people. You can try downgrading to 1.77.
Go to settings/about phone/battery use and see if there are any apps running at the top of the list. My phone was awake all the time and I found "Flight View" to always be at the top of my batt usage so I un-installed it. I also went to settings/applications/running services and closed out a bunch of apps that I didn't need running.
Since I killed the flight time my battery time has gone from 10-12hrs at the most to a steady 16-18. Over the weekend I got 32hrs on a charge which has never happened before.
Wifi for 2 hours and awake time was 1 hour.

Never hurts to demo different kernels as well. Ever since I have switched over to Savage Zen & MIUI (Although I am familiar with Myn's as well) My battery life has sky rocketed. If that time without signal is ACTUALLY accurate, and not the classic 'time without signal bug' (I'm not sure if it exists for these newer ROMs at all), then yes, that's probably it.
If you a) have EVDO 3g and/or 4g turned on and
b) are going in and out of signal
that probably means that, wherever you are, you are typically having VERY POOR signal. Do you typically find very low reception bars around wherever you were?
One thing that murders smartphone batteries is low reception.
When reception is weak, the phone gets 'Louder' so that it can communicate with the tower. This requires a LOT of battery power to achieve.
One of the problems with the CDMA Samsung Galaxy S series is exactly this. If I'm in certain towns around my city (Buffalo, NY), my Fascinate battery goes in a few hours (fading in and out of reception, or just very weak reception the whole time, or at least going in and out of EVDO) from a full charge to dead.
If you're actually getting poor reception (as Sprint doesn't offer the best signal strength everywhere), but you usually keep signal (where some other Sprint phones won't, because their antennas can't get 'Loud' enough), your battery is disappearing as a result.
If you can open up Spare Parts app, look at Battery History, then change 'Other usage' to 'Partial wake usage', you might find a culprit killing your battery if you had a lot of awake time. Otherwise, I'd pin it on reception.
BTW, using WiFi instead of EV or 4g uses about 1/5 of the battery per data that you transfer, and the savings is even greater if you have very weak cell signal. Just food for thought.
Ok, it is definitely not an app doing it. I got kik messenger on lock down(force stop when done using) and why does it die fast on wifi too?

Lately I have been experiencing some slow 3g speeds. At first I thought that 3g reception in my area was just not very fast, however I don't think that's the case anymore. For example, I did a speedtest and got 300kbps down and 400kbps up while a friend of mine standing right beside me (also on verizon and has a Droid X) got 1000kbps down and 500kbps up.
What could be causing slower 3g speeds? Any help would be great as slow speeds are very annoying. Also now he keeps insisting that his phone is vastly superior to the Dinc...

I have not tried flashing a new radio ever sense I first flashed 2.15.00.07.28. Is there another radio I should use or could reflashing that one help at all?
Noooo no no no no don't flash the radio again. That causes bricks, so I've heard. There are three newer radios than yours (9.01, 11.19, and 4.09, in that order), but there isn't any way to tell which one will work for your phone in your area except by trying them yourselves. But... Flashing radios is risky. You should always check your MD5 sum with the one provided from where you downloaded it. You can get them all from www.dougpiston.com

Only way to brick is to pull the battery when flashing the radio. Check md5, have a good charge and you'll be fine.

Ok if a new radio might help I guess ill try that.
The same friend mentioned that his rom included something that removed the data throttle. Obviously that could increase speeds... anything like that for the Dinc?
I don't know if it was just the natural variation in data speed but I got better speedtest results with the 4.08 radio. As far as throttling, if there is any throttling done its on Verizon's side and you can't do anything to your phone for it. If you were being throttled you would see an icon in your status bar and (should) receive notice from Verizon. The only people that would be throttled are (I think) the top 5% of data users so unless you use A LOT of data I wouldn't worry about it.

Right now I'm at -79 with 3 bars showing. I'm in a spot were reception is great. At my apartment it was at -86, showing 1 bar. Verizon is not very strong where I live, but I never drop calls or have issues with cutting out. EDIT: I am using the 08.08 radio.

I moved to a Moto Photon 4G after getting fed up with the E4GT not lasting through the afternoon on a full charge ever since ICS first came out. Photons cannot be flashed without losing 4G, so I am stuck on GB and sick of it. Fow what it's worth, the Moto gets much better signal in places my three Samsungs (NS4g, E4GT, SGSIII) never could, and battery lasts about two days. I think that the Samsung models just sh!t themselves when they lose or get a weak signal, and Moto just makes a better radio. If I could flash this thing I probably wouldnt upgrade for years.
Anyway, just coming back here to check in and see if it's worth moving back to the E4GT.
Has anyone who HAD major battery problems seen any improvement in the last few months with the latest ROMs and kernels? Searching only reveals posts like "battery life is great" with little to back it up. Spent all last summer getting sucked into every rom, none made a difference with battery.
Well that is interesting.
My buddie got his first smartphone about a year ago, whenever the photon first came out. He had me help him pick out a phone, i saw good reviews about the photon so we went with it. All i can say is, out off all the phones ive ever used over the past 5-6 years, including iphone, evo4g, vibrant 4g, facinate, g2x, g2, sensation, mytouch3g, and this one, the photon was the absolute worst experience with a smartphone. ever.
I think that all phones are different and some people just have bad luck with phones. I personaly have never had a phone i had to replace due to manufacturing defects. Except the evo.(knock on wood) It was a good phone, but at the same time it was a bit of a joke too. Id go with the s2. I just got one. Its great
Well, thanks for the reply, but that doesn't really answer my question. I did go with the s2, and it WAS great, until ICS. It doesn't sound as though you have battery issues. I can charge the thing all night, and for another 45 minutes commuting the car, and it will still be dead by 2pm. Sprint even gave me a new battery. I think I gave up on it around FK23 or so.
The other thing I have noticed is that 3G is positively awful in my area (cincinnati) to the point of being useless. I wonder if that has anything to do with it, maybe when it loses 4G it tries to keep going using 3G, and can't, but sucks the battery dry trying. Maybe there's a way to tell it to shut things down unless it has 4G or wifi.
Well then i guess it depends on the rom. It seems all the new 4.2.2 roms have better battery life. But a low signal and the fact that you have 4g on all day is definitely the cause. I have the same problem with sprints coverage. But yes the new roms have definitely helped.
There are some apps in the market that do similar things. Try tasker or juice defender

Regardless of rom turn off 4g, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS when not in use. Try a jellybean leak next. I ran the GA10 jellybean leak for about a month before I got bored and moved on. Battery life averaged 24 hours with a screen on time of 2-3 hours. Calls and light bluetooth streaming were also daily activities.
tried all those old tricks 1000x over from july to october when i gave up. turning off 4G literally means no data in downtown cincinnati, it gets about 15kbps on 3G. Wifi not an option.
when we get LTE, i will have more options, but sprint hasnt made a peep about ohio and we were among the first to get wimax, so I bet thats a least a year off.
i will try a newer rom for giggles. i have read through a few, nothing jumping out. all i really care about is de-bloating, all suggestions welcome.
Wimax eats battery like a fat kid in a bakery. If you arent using the device turn off all mobile data of you can't get 3g between wimax running and 3g searching your battery will die in just a few hours. Just put a 4g and mobile data widget on your homescreen or use widgetsoid and put em in the noti panel and turn em off when you turn your screen off. Turn your sync times to 1-4 hours instead of push and watch your battery last all day.

not true with the photon. i can leave everything on and get 10-12 hours out of it. maybe that's GB vs ICS/JB more than samsung vs moto, but the point is the same. never mind, sounds like there won't be anything for the s2 that doesn't require massive amounts of hoop jumping.

The photon only lasts that long because it suspends the mobile networks when the screen is off and only wakes them up every 30 mins to sync so basically its doing exactly what I told you to do. My wife has that POS phone
