Slow 3g speeds - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lately I have been experiencing some slow 3g speeds. At first I thought that 3g reception in my area was just not very fast, however I don't think that's the case anymore. For example, I did a speedtest and got 300kbps down and 400kbps up while a friend of mine standing right beside me (also on verizon and has a Droid X) got 1000kbps down and 500kbps up.
What could be causing slower 3g speeds? Any help would be great as slow speeds are very annoying. Also now he keeps insisting that his phone is vastly superior to the Dinc...

Not sure what would be causing that. Have you tried flashing different radios?
Also, throw our massive dev community in his face if he thinks his phone is all that. Locked bootloader < Inc.

I have not tried flashing a new radio ever sense I first flashed 2.15.00.07.28. Is there another radio I should use or could reflashing that one help at all?

Noooo no no no no don't flash the radio again. That causes bricks, so I've heard. There are three newer radios than yours (9.01, 11.19, and 4.09, in that order), but there isn't any way to tell which one will work for your phone in your area except by trying them yourselves. But... Flashing radios is risky. You should always check your MD5 sum with the one provided from where you downloaded it. You can get them all from www.dougpiston.com
Sent from my Droid Incredible running CM7.0.3.

Only way to brick is to pull the battery when flashing the radio. Check md5, have a good charge and you'll be fine.

Ok if a new radio might help I guess ill try that.
The same friend mentioned that his rom included something that removed the data throttle. Obviously that could increase speeds... anything like that for the Dinc?

I don't know if it was just the natural variation in data speed but I got better speedtest results with the 4.08 radio. As far as throttling, if there is any throttling done its on Verizon's side and you can't do anything to your phone for it. If you were being throttled you would see an icon in your status bar and (should) receive notice from Verizon. The only people that would be throttled are (I think) the top 5% of data users so unless you use A LOT of data I wouldn't worry about it.

4G Web Browsing SLOW

I just started using 4G and everything is fast (downloading, apps, tethering, etc) but the phones native web browsing is really slow. 3G actually loads the page faster.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a setting or something?
This has been my experience with 4G as well. Probably because of the latency issues. Downloading large files is really fast, but downloading a lot of small files (e.g. web browsing) is typically slower than with 3G.
Everyone using 4G and browsing the internet via the phone's browser experiencing this lag/slowness?
If you don't experience this lag/slowness can you please provide what ROM/Kernel you're using? TIA

Bump- I am having this same issue. I flashed fresh 3.2 I never noticed 4g before in my area till recently. Downloading aps is wicked quick, surfing my favorite site (xda) it is way to slow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would suggest opening a terminal and running a few tracerts to see what latancy is like. Or tether to your pc and see what happens or run tracerts from a command prompt.
Latency on 4g is way better than 3g/cellular.
You have to remember unless you are moving in a car there is no handoff between towers. Although you could be in the outlying edges of a town but that is back
The same is not true for cellular where you can be transfered thru countless towers to get back to a POP.
I am, or rather the company i work for is, a distributor of microwave radios, both licensed and unlicensed, and 2.5Ghz and 3.65Ghz WiMax and I actually distribute the E-Band radios Clearwire uses for backhaul on their 4G networks (because they dropped Dragonwave like a psycho girlfriend) and i also help in the design and trouble shooting, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that latency is not an issue with clearwires networks unless it is oversold too heavily (which they are). Then the radio is working too hard and, well that's what happens.
But to say 4g is slower than 3g is telling me that the network is overloaded or the radios are not setup properly (you are getting a lower QOS priority)... or... you may need to make sure you have the latest radios installed or as you guys are eluding too, maybe a rom issue
One thing people don't realize is that these 2.5Ghz radios have very limited bandwidth. Clearwire and Sprint have greatly over exaggerated these radios capabilities for the most part.
But again I think its the network not the rom although a funky rom can scew up a lot of things

[Q] Wont go past 2 bars

Hey guys. I dont know if this is a big issue or not because my phone doesnt drop calls or anything. After rooting and going to CM6 my bars for sinal don't seem to ever want to jump past 2. And if they do get past 2 its only for a split second then my bars drop again. I know theres a RADIO and a WIMAX to flash as Ive read but never knew if that was necessary or not. Anyone have any ideas?
I am on CM6 official and I have the same problem, I have reflashed multiple times as well. My internet speeds are horrible speedtest and xtremelabs reads me at about 500 kbps tops. In the past I was getting 1.5 mbps easy.
I believe the bars dont represent signal strength but 3 g signal strength. I've been using cm6 since the first nightly

I have heard this before but it does not explain my slower data speeds. I have been using Evo since launch I download constantly and browse the web on a daily basis. Since going to CM6 I have noticed a considerable decrease in speed.
-I flashed to the latest radio updates
-I went back to an earlier rom and made sure the pri is updated
-I've reflashed multiple times
Still no help and speedtest and xtremelabs speedtest has me rated at half of my usual internet speed.
Thanks again!

Weak !! 4G signal/service on custom roms ,not on stock.

I've bin pretty disapointed with the roms signal and service strength on my G2 lately.
When I bought my fone I had full 4G bars all the time in my area and at home, so it can't be that "towers" moved or network error. I can explain why.
First with stock rom I got it all bars, rooted and everything.
I notice the signal change once I jump to a rom first was virtuous, I get 3G all the time..speed test sucks and it sometimes goes to edge. It goes to 4G once in a blue moon...for only like 6 seconds max. I swear.
Than I go back to stock "backup" and my signal strength is back to awesomeness and check speedtestt and they're out of hand perfect.
So I stayed stock for a bit, tried other roms and same crap.
Stayed stock for a bit more longer, now on cm 6.1.1 and its not as bad as it was but its really bad still. Edge is on as I speak at a spot where 4G is full strength all the time at my house.
I need help figuring out what's the cause? Is it a kernel? Or something? If so can I flash the stock one for it on the cm so I can have my stock speed since its the best?
Or what can it be?
Pleeeaaasee help ! I wanna enjoy this rom,but without excellent signal/service strength it means nothing at all to me but back to boring old stock...
Thanks..

did u check ur apn?
Not really, but it shouldn't have bin touched since the apn isn't in stock.
Just don't get why all of the custom roms have bad service but when I got back to stock with root and all the service goes back to being excellent again.

Compare 6.1.1 and stocks build.prop files
Maybe you will find your answer there?
Another point to make is that the stock rom doesn't show a 3G icon.....it just displays the 'H' icon regardless of whether you are on 3G or 4G.
So when using the stock ROM, you just *thought* you were getting 4G all the time when you were actually only getting 3G connections.
On the non-stock ROM's, they actually differentiate between 3G and 4G. Thus you get to see when you are 'really' using 4G and the few times you actually get 4G speeds.
It's all a marketing game by the providers.

Your right, the stock rom doesn't differentiate between umts n hspa. But one thing I noticed is that all rooted roms have a slight lag when switching from umts n hspa.
I can totally attest to this statement. Stock data access speeds and signal is much better than custom ROMS. It must be something that is missing in the kernel or maybe the ROM itself. Dont think it is the radio because no one has mentioned flashing another radio in any of the stock roms list so far.
I am on CM 6.1.1 right now and I really want this ROM to have the same signal as the stock....
I have the same thing on mine. When I tried cyananogen my signal was crap. I would get slower speeds and less service overall. Same for MIUI. Couldn't handle it and went back to stock. Not to be unapreciative to rom developers but its hard to beat stock connection and battery life

Wish you where right, but I wouldn't post this up if it was just that.
I tested the speeds out with speed test and my results cleary show that stock has perfect 4G speeds. also used tethering and on my ps3 it loses connectiong with custom roms. When usually it doesn't . So, it couldn't be that. Download speeds and everything lags a lot, and I go to edge awhole lot where I'm at when I'm always in 4G.

I have owned many diff types of android phones. And all were rooted with custom roms and all exhibited the "laggy umts to hspa switch."
might be something we r gonna have to comprimise...
On an unrelated note. My n900 from nokia is capable of hspa plus but only till about 10mb where as my g2 can pull in about 14mb. Today I noticed that the n900 consistently hovers around 5-7mb per second where as my g2 hovers around 2mb-4mb per sec lol.
Can't wait for the nokia n9.
I'm confident your answer is in /system/build.prop. Check the HSDPA and HSUPA categories.

Is it possible, that everyone that owns a G2 having this problem but doesn't notice it?
We need to let people know.

It's gotta be something in the software, a setting gone awry or accidentally unnoticed, a line in the kernal code or something.
Eventually CM or someone will figure it out and we'll enjoy "4g" speeds even while ROM'd up.

I believe its in the build.prop file. Rodriguezstyle once released a beautiful black n green rom for the nexus one. It didn't exhibit the umts to hspa lag. I remember reviewing his build.prop. it was definately very different from what I have seen in the past

Is it possible to port his build.prop into one of our existing ROMs? Maybe that'll fix the problem.
Ive compared the build.prop files from a stock backup and 6.1.1 and there's nothing in there in the communication settings that would be causing this. They're literally the same going down the list.
It must be the new radio 6.1.1 uses which isn't the Tmobile stock radio. That's the only thing that could be affecting communications (bars and data speeds).
But I agree I'm seeing similar results i an HSPA+ area where Speedtest seems to get stuck and wobble around 1.5mb down like its some kind of cap or something. Haven't seen a huge signal bar drop though.

Yes stock ROM to CM 6.1.1 was what I meant. Nothing different in build.prop that would affect the radio portion. Just some memory tweaks but that would have nothing to do with the signal or data speeds.

After the new g2 update I actually got stronger signals n better data speeds though. I don't think downgrading the radio will help....

to get a better idea, we should run the speed test 3 times (take the average) at a few different points during the day (morning, afternoon, evening, night?) in the same place, then take the overall average... this will give you a more accurate whole picture.
might be a good idea to put where you live in there as well.
using the above method (3 simultaneous tests, 1 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 evening, 1 night), my results are as follows... both radios were tested in the same location at the approximate same times a week apart. I'm in eastside seattle:
26.02.01.15:
DOWN: ~4.8mbps
UP: ~3.5mbps
26.06.04.27 (w/ updated lib files):
DOWN: ~5.4mbps
UP: ~3.9mbps
noticeable (not just placebo effect) decrease in browser loading times and GPS is much better for me. switching from towers seems to be quicker as well - my phone used to hang for 10-15 secs going from 3G to H, now it's almost instant even in the middle of communication. have been extremely happy with 26.06.02.27 so far... I may try some other radios just for testing, but I'm scared to screw up what is already a pretty solid setup.
You should also note that just because your phone has the "H" icon in the status bar, doesn't mean that you're on the "4G" network (which technically is HSPA+). The H can refer to HSUPA (instead of HSPA+), and it will often stay on H even when you're down on UMTS (3G). I don't even have HSPA+ "4G" in my area, being told that its on the way in the coming months, and H is lit up all the time, but its just HSUPA.
Something to think about.
That being said, I generally get about 1.9mbps down, 1.9mbps up on HSUPA. Stock radio.

I average between 4.5mb up to 8mb depending on data traffic and my uploads average around 2.5mb
I think most of it just has to do w/ the coverage in your particular area.
I get the "H" icon a lot at home, but my speeds are usually < 1 mb as you can see:

Network speeds are affected by much more than simply your radio version or ROM type. See my post above for explanation of the "H" icon in your taskbar for a little look into that.
You can flash your radio independent of your ROM, some people get better performance with other radios, but I've gotten consistent performance with my stock radio and a few different ROMs.

Yes, you must be rooted to flash new radios. Unless you're having network issues, and you're happy with your speeds (I hope you are at avg 4.2mbps) then there's no need to be flashing different radios.

Running virtuous v1.0.1
I only get 350kbs-1.5mbs download and 800kbs-1.5mbs up. The upload isn't the problem. The best download I have ever gotten was 2.2mbs in my area (with the H or 3G+ symbol and 3-4 bars). I did get 3.5mbs download once, but that was on the other side of town.
Just to clarify, when I said 4.2 mbs was my average, I meant my average at the moment. I did 3 tests.
Although, my average overall is usually about 2.5-3 mbs which is still good enough for me. Just hate when I randomly get Edge out of nowhere.
Best speed I ever recorded was 5.37mbs late in the afternoon a month ago or so.

Man I thought I lived in a **** town because I only saw 6.5mbps max when our phones are capable of easy double digits. Especially when I see some people having screenies showing cell speeds of like 9 or 13mbps. I guess I have nothing to ***** about.
Although I have found I can do just about anything I really need my phone to do if I have atleast 1.5.
I only get like 5mbps downloaded and 2mbps uploaded. I really dont think that the 4g network isnt completely up yet but the speeds are okay with me.

My Experience with Latest Radios (VZN FF02/FG02)

I know there is a thread for the latest system update but I thought we should have our own thread to discuss radio experience.
For me it's nothing short of amazing! I am such a happy camper right now. I work in a brick building and I could hardly ever hang onto a 4G signal. I would say the phone was staying in 3G 90% of the time and 10% 4G.
Flashed the latest radios and over the last 4 hours I have had a solid 4G signal all day! I can finally use my 4G signal at work! It's been horrible because we don't have wifi in my building. I have heard that handoff between wifi and 4G is quick but I havent been able to test yet.
How's everyone else's experience?
I say go flash this now! http://rootzwiki.com/topic/33228-jro03o-radios-for-toro-ff02fg02/

Very, very happy with the new radio release.
I was one of the many unlucky Nexus users with the 4G/radio drop, and had been resigned to using strictly 3G in order to simply have a usable phone outside of being on a WiFi network. For such a good phone, this issue had me literally hours away from finally returning it back to BB since it is w/i the 30 day return window and getting a new phone altogether.
After flashing the radios this morning, I have had no signal drops, constant 4G and no delays or hiccups of note. Whatever they fixed, hopefully it remains!

Yep, these are the radios it should of shipped with out of the box! I've been struggling with similar issues for almost a year!
I usually get a good signal in the building where I work and at home. I've flashed the new radios and haven't noticed any huge improvements. Nothing is worse either.
I flashed the new radios, too early for me to tell since where I am in NYC I always got 4G, but I just tried a few speedtests lucky if I get 5 Mbps
I don't think I have ever seen anything higher then that unless I am on wifi, how do you get such great speeds.
I just think the new radio show more bars but they didn't increase my signal or anything...
its -100dbm and I have full bars all the time
I live in reno nv so not very many people on the network as compared to NYC.

Wanted to echo what you said. I was in the same exact boat! I haven't used 4G in months because I would loose data constantly and people would tell me that when they called it would go into fast busy. I am now hitting 24 hours on 4G after the radio update and not a complaint! I certainly hope this is the fix:good:
Side note: I haven't noticed an increase in signal but as long as my data stays I don't care.
I've had a big jump in speed. I live just outside a 4G area and before these radios I would get about 2 bars and of was alright to use it, but used WiFi most of the time. Now I would rather use my 4G because its faster than my WiFi, lol.

I had a good first day with it, it seemed to hold signal at work better (which it usually drops in certain areas of building a bit). Still same visible bars and such...I'm not prepared to declare it better yet, but am optimistic that it will be an improvement for me.
Everyone has LTE phones here in LA no 30mbps for me.

Same old same old for me. Constant data drops... 55 percent without signal time. usually 44 percent without signal on the older radios (house is built like a bomb shelter, literally) so if anything, its worse now.
