Came from the Droid and pretty much owned that phone up and down, but Evo is a different bird. I did the simple Unrevoked root method to run some of my root apps...question is, how do I unroot after using this method? Very much appreciated in advance. I am new to this particular forum, came from Droidforums.net, but always kept an eye on things over here.
thanks again,
Alan

Well first you uninstall the unrevoked app then you restart the device and you're done.
Appreciate it guys...I hate having such a noob question on my first post
when you guys say "restart" you don't just mean holding down the power button until the phone asks you if you want to turn it off do you? you mean a full, data wiping, hard-reset right?

where do i uninstall the unrevoked app at? p.s. i just rooted my dinc with unrevoked 3
How do you un-root from unrEVOked3?
If it is the same as the first unrevoked, you just have to install the APK.
If it has changed ( i used Simple Root to get root & real NAND unlock ) then it's the same as unrooting any other root or unlock: Run the official RUU.

Going into settings under manage applications there should be an unrevoked app that you can uninstall.
just for future reference, this post should go into the Q&A section.

Hey I rooted w/unrevoked3 and it's diff from the unrevoked.APK
I was wondering can I just go ahead and do a simple root or another full root method over unrevoked or any other root method ?...or do I have do use an RUU then do another root method, see unrevoked3 doesn't have nand unlock or something so I cannot put damage control 3.2.2 on tit,

can u tell please, how to unroot 3.2.1 ??
to unroot 3.2.1, you need to flash toast's mtd-eng.img to the misc partition, before flashing unrevokedforevers-on.zip tool, and then either run an ruu or flash stock pc36img.zip. be happy. if this is too confusing, go to toast's how to root part two and do up to the flashing misc with mtd-eng.img ( code that you stop after is /data/local/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img) then you flash the s-on tool from the unrevoked website and flash to stock or run ruu.
dk
where do i get the latest RUU???
go to shippedroms.com. Those are ruu files
For 3.2.1
Try reading the FAQ's here http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Flash S-On and restore using the RUU.

I have been trying to unroot my evo phone. I have read forums upon forums and I can't find my answer. Here is my dilemma. I am back to the stock rom and have run the file in Recovery so it says S-ON in the Bootloader. Having done this, I assumed that I unrooted it. BUT, I still have superuser permissions, such as wireless tether and whatever else. Help? Please? I need to unroot it so it can be sent in; the micro-usb port is dying. Thank you.

Rename to PC36IMG, place on your bootloader, flash in the bootloader. A 3.70 stock ruu, so that'll take care of that.
So should I delete the old PC36IMG file I have on it right now?

Yes, delete the old one. You can only have one PC36IMG on the sdcard at a time, or it won't scan; or you can always rename the first one, such as PC36IMG1, ect.
do i need to install the zip file in recovery? sorry, i'm a complete noob.

Its fine. And no, any PC36IMG has to be done from the bootloader.
To get to the bootloader, turn phone off, while powering on, hold the vol+down until you see the white screen with androids skateboarding. After a second it will scan, navigate with the volume keys, then press the power button to update, then reboot, and you'll be set.
thank you so much! i just ran it, so far so good.

Never a problem.
I have a Evo with 3.70.651.1 software. I want to restore everything back to stock and unroot the phone. I have been using the clockworkmod recovery and would like to remove it and flash the stock recovery Back to the phone. I have been searching for 2 days and I can't find it anywhere... I also want to unroot my phone and get it back to stock, the guides that I have found to turn s-off back to s-on seem to be for people who used the unrevoked rooting method. I rooted via the Autoroot method therefore I'm not sure if the same way to unroot applies. How can I get my phone To stock recovery, unrooted, and back to stock without screwing it up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If I'm not mistaken, Autoroot still uses unrevoked forever for nand unlock, so your unrooting method would be the same. Flash s-on zip, then run an RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG through the bootloader.
The stock Evo recovery is no recovery. Unrooting will delete your custom recovery, so you'll be fine.
Good luck!
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
I think you could go to http://theunlockr.com/ down load a stock ROM to your SD card and then flash the ROM to your phone. Sounds like it would work.
A big thank you!!!
After all said and done, I've never known the answer to the question as to the "stock recovery". I've searched for weeks looking for a way to get rid of the clockwork mod recovery and putting the stock recovery back on with no results. I never knew that the stock recovery didn't exist! Now I do. Thank you!

I just wanted to update, I was able to get my phone unrooted and back to stock. It all went very smooth. I also was under the impression that there was a stock recovery and was frustrated from searching to no avail. thanks for taking the time to help me out.
It does seem odd that there is no straight forward guide to return your phone to stock. I've been modding phones since the RAZR and there was always an escape route back to stock for every phone I had, except the Evo.
I thought unrEVOked site had decent directions for un-root on their forever root page... (though I've never needed to un-root)

Correct . . . they do . .
I don't think Custom Recovery replaces stock recovery, it's more like a shell making recovery user friendly and fully functional.
It's like in the early days of Windows. Windows was a shell program while DOS was always there, but you needed a way to access DOS, hence, the command prompt.
(Actually DOS, in a way, is still there)

How did you finally remove the custom recovery? I have tried to flash the PC36IMG.zip many times and it looks like it was done, but I still have the Recovery option and when I hit it, it will load back the Clockwork custom recovery mode.
How do I bring it back to stock?
I tried to update mine with the official OTA this morning and it fails with the android with the ! icon.

brad560,
Thanks for this. This is the most complete and detailed step by step. I went through all the steps and that's exactly what I had gone through. I flashed the S-ON and verified it was working (got the S-ON) then flash the PC3IMG.zip and it went through fine as well.
But when everything was done, I still have the Recovery option and when I selected it, it still brings up Clockwork recovery mode!
What's I'm missing? I just checked the checksum of the PC3IMG.zip file I use, and yes, it shows correct check sum as listed in the instruction above.

relly? i have used this method plenty of times with clockwork and ra_ before hand, never had them left over. i did, before i used the method wiped everything 3-4 times before i flashed the files onto my sd card. sorry i don't know why this is happening to you explicitly?
I just tried one more time flashing the PC3IMG.zip and this time it works!
It went through 2 iterations (reboot in between then continue to the next step) and I'm back to a new phone! Finally! Thanks again for your help and the detailed instruction!

When I had to return my phone due to a bad usb port it took all of five minutes and is not as difficult as you guys are making it out to seem. Actually you can do an OTA update which will unroot you. Of course depending on what OS you are running and there are tons of threads with the RUU which is how I did it.
Plugged my phone up crossed my fingers that my USB Port would hold out and ran the .exe or you can use the PC36IMG.zip file that is in the same threads. Then flash unrevoked S-on zip and your back to stock

If anyone's interested, I made a tutorial a while ago on RUU'ing an EVO back to 100% stock. You can find it here: http://j.mp/ruuevo4g
So i just recently rooted my phone using revolutionary s-off and everything was working fine. i accidentally received the 2.3.3 update and now i dont have root access. i tried root again with revolutionary and it didnt work. is there anything i can do? sorry if this is nooby...
HTC Evo 4g
You took the update so you may not be rooted anymore (the ROM that you are running is stock and does not provide root access) but you may still have S-OFF. Power your phone off, then hold the Vol Down while turning it back on. You see S-OFF or S-ON.
If you are still S-OFF then you may just need to reload a recovery and flash a rooted ROM.

If you do find that you still have S-OFF you can find the recovery image here a rooted version of the 4.53 OTA here.
thanks for the help so far guys. i flashed the recovery but i still dont have root access. also another problem i found is that i cant get into the bootloader by holding the volume down and power button anymore. i had to go to revolutionary and make it use fastboot. im pretty sure i still have s-off and revolutionary but i didnt make a nandroid backup.
There are two parts to "being rooted". The first part is that the security of the bootloader is turned off to allow you to flash files that are not signed by HTC (S-OFF). The second part is that you have loaded a ROM that allows root access (i.e. has Superuser installed).
If you were able to flash the recovery then you must have S-OFF. Now that you have a recovery flashed (and you can get into it) you should be able to flash a ROM that contains superuser.

In 2.3.+ Gingerbread, if you're on an non-rooted rom, you'll have to do a battery pull for a hard shutdown then hold volume down + power to get into the bootloader.

Correct. If you have Fast boot turned on (Menu > Settings > Power) you can not get into the bootloader without pulling the battery. You can turn Fast boot off and then you will be able to get into the bootloader (and recovery) normally.

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
