[Q] Unrooting the Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to unroot my evo phone. I have read forums upon forums and I can't find my answer. Here is my dilemma. I am back to the stock rom and have run the file in Recovery so it says S-ON in the Bootloader. Having done this, I assumed that I unrooted it. BUT, I still have superuser permissions, such as wireless tether and whatever else. Help? Please? I need to unroot it so it can be sent in; the micro-usb port is dying. Thank you.

Rename to PC36IMG, place on your bootloader, flash in the bootloader. A 3.70 stock ruu, so that'll take care of that.

So should I delete the old PC36IMG file I have on it right now?

Yes, delete the old one. You can only have one PC36IMG on the sdcard at a time, or it won't scan; or you can always rename the first one, such as PC36IMG1, ect.

do i need to install the zip file in recovery? sorry, i'm a complete noob.

Its fine. And no, any PC36IMG has to be done from the bootloader.
To get to the bootloader, turn phone off, while powering on, hold the vol+down until you see the white screen with androids skateboarding. After a second it will scan, navigate with the volume keys, then press the power button to update, then reboot, and you'll be set.

thank you so much! i just ran it, so far so good.

What are you trying to do?
I'm not sure what your goals were by flashing the PC36IMG you chose too, that is a stock build. Before you do things with your phone, make sure you do aloooooooooooot of reading/forum surfing to make sure you are doing what you want.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915 and download this PC36IMG.zip and then flash that...it will leave you with a a rooted (albeit w/out superuser which you can download separately) 1.47 build (upgrade to current radio/wimax/rom from there)

Is it not loading the PC36IMG.zip at all? Your memory card needs to be an SDHC or it wont load the PC36IMG.zip.

Flashing the file you did will not upgrade your PRI. This is noted in the thread where it is available for download. Flash the PC36IMG from the thread I showed you that should work.

[Q] How exactly do I reroot with S=Off?

Ok so i had root and custom rom and all that, then i decided to switch back to the stock with the latest RUU, i already had S off before i did this and i hear you can get clockwork back on again if its off, but uhhhh im a complete newcomer almost when it comes to rooting so how exactly do i do that?
If you follow the directions here, you'll have clockworkmod recovery back: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788306
(I linked to this one because it works on both AMOLED and SLCD screens )
Edit: Flashing via HBOOT is as simple as holding Vol Down while your phone starts up and selecting yes when it asks you if you want to flash PB31IMG.zip (the file you just copied over).
S-off allows your phone to flash any PB31IMG file, while S-on phones check for a signature from HTC. Because of this, I recommend a healthy dose of caution when flashing PB31IMG files, as flashing malicious or corrupt one could spell trouble.

Yes to both, but you'll want to make sure that the file is meant to be flashed from HBOOT before doing so - I'm a bit cloudy beyond this, but try to research for the difference between files that are meant to be flashed in HBOOT and ones that are meant to be flashed in recovery.

[[RESOLVED]] Can you s-on after unroot?

I had to unroot my phone so that i could take it back to sprint. I am taking it back to sprint because my power/wake button is not working. i ran the ruu.exe but i forgot to turn the s back on before unrooting. so baically my phone is stock with s-off. did i screw myself. do i have to reroot my phone then turn s-on then unroot again. or can someone please tell me how to turn s-on while stock.
thanks
Edit: See final post for fix.
I think you have to reroot your phone. You need to get into recovery to flash the S-on tool.

mmm i run the RUU the other day and i didnt lost root. i have the s-off n i can still go to recovery. hey i think u can flash a recovery zip (PC36IMG) that mite work.. HERES DA LINK U HAVE TO COPY N PASTE scroll down where it says downloads n download the recovery zip. PC36IMG_RECOVERY.ZIP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
[[RESOLVED]]
So I flashed the RUU.exe(3.29.651.5). it replaced everything back to stock.(i.e. the splash1.img, removed custom recovery, stock boot animation, and removed superuser permissions.) but i forgot to run unrevoked forever s-on.zip. so I had completely unrooted my phone but it was nand unlocked. and because of the problem i was having with the phone i couldnt just run unrevoked3 for a quick root. so here's what i did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
this is toast's method of rooting. but i only did the first half. the part where you download the pc36IMG.zip and update. pretty long and tedious process but it got the job done. maybe it will hel someone else.
for the recovery i just installed from the market, rom manager and chainsdd superuser permission app. the su app was to grant permissions to rom manager. then just flashed recovery img with rom manager.
i then put Unrevokedforeverson.zip on the root of sd card and ran the zip from rom manager so that i wouldnt have to use power or volume buttons.
verified that s was on. and then ran the ruu.exe again.
Thanks for this!!!!
I had the same issue and followed your instructions and IT WORKED!!!
One question - how did you check if S was ON after running the RUU?
Since I can't use the Power button, I was wondering how you did it?
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!

My power button was stuck in the held position I think. I just did a battery pull and before reinserting. The battery I held the volume. Down and power down too boot into boot loader. That is where you see s—on or s—off.

You can also use the adb reboot recovery command in adb to reboot the phone into recovery. I plan on unrooting and using this ruu later since my mic isnt working and need to take it to sprint. I dont want to use the newest ruu's since I dont want to risk my hboot getting switched to one of the more difficult hboots since I plan on rerooting once the mic gets fixed. Hopefully the mic can get fixed and I can keep my current phone.

Returning damaged phone, need to unroot?

I got a replacement for my EVO. Do I need to unroot and put back RUU? or just factory wipe and send it in back?
Anyone know or any advice.
Run the RUU. Best bet.
http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/RUU/
If its going back to Sprint, unroot. If its going to Asurion, I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter.

Does the RUU unroot? or i have to do that as well. I was just going to flash the RUU.zip?
Just download the .zip, rename it to PC36IMG.zip, drop it on your SD card, and boot into hboot. It will completely wipe your data from the phone, and un-root it.

Unrooting is easy and takes 10 minutes so there really isn't ANY reason NOT to. Cover your ass.

Yup, it's just that easy. It will replace your hboot, recovery, radio and restore the factory rom so the phone will be just like it was when it came out of the box the first time you turned it on.
Easy.
What .zip the ruu? I though that was a .exe just trying to make sure I follow you correctly

So I rooted my replacement but noticed that there are 3 lines on the right side running down the screen. So bad pixels or something.
Whatever I did to root doesn't seem to have unrooted hboot if that makes sense? I was able to load a custom rom on it but haven't been able to get PC36IMG.zip to be read by hboot. Keeps saying no image.
The EVO I am currently using, i know it's hboot is older and works but not sure why this new one won't.
All in all, do you know what I need to do to get this to read your RUU? I downloaded the RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip
as that matches my phones settings. Renamed that to PC36IMG.zip and hboot doesn't read it.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

HELP! Flashed system.emmc, flash stock recovery, now I don't know what to do!

So I've been trying to get the newest system update for my rooted phone. I flashed the system.emmc.win from the backup I made before I rooted my phone. That started doing a flash loop so I thought I would try flashing the stock recovery I found on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/1-32-401-8-stock-recovery-t3061895 Now my phone is on this "Android system recovery" screen and I don't know what to do! Please help!

Sorry, should have mentioned that. My carrier is Sprint and my phone is S-On. And I'm pretty sure I'm on the original firmware, I just rooted the phone.
Okay, first of all, you flashed stock recovery for GSM phones. I have no idea if that will work correctly on Sprint.
Hold down power and vol up buttons until you get to the bootloader screen. You may need to use the volume buttons to select "reboot to bootloader".
Are you saying you restored a stock backup in twrp? Or flashed that file some other way?
Your best and safest bet here is probably to run the latest Sprint RUU. It will wipe your phone, but everything will be clean and updated.

Assuming it's on your external sdcard, it will be safe. You could restore that, but you'd be rolling the system files back to 1.32 on top of 2.x firmware, which would be unstable. You'd need to then immediately update your rom. But your data should be okay.
My recommendation would be to head over to the M9 Sprint forum before doing anything more, though. This is for GSM phones and the guys there would know for sure what would be best.

Yes, it is on an external card. If by chance the system wasn't backed up (just everything else on the phone) would that work out ok?
Also, while I'm waiting for RUU from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-one-m9/development/ruu-sprint-htc-one-m9-1-32-651-17-t3073355) to download, I just want to make sure I have the instructions right. If I rename the zip file to 0PJAIMG.zip, put that on the sd card, go into download mode, it should just read it like the thread says right?
Edit: Sorry, I didn't see the last bit of your post. I will go ahead and put up a post on the GSM forum. That's the same place I got that first stock recovery from right?

You might be better off heading over to that thread for help. There are some things in the OP that concern me, namely the "brick risk" referred to. I am not sure what they mean by using only a current version. On the GSM M9, you can upgrade that way; that warning seems to suggest you can't upgrade a Sprint phone using the sdcard method.
Edit: No, that's a GSM recovery. Go to the Sprint firmware thread you linked.
