(Q) Rooting the Incredible - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my girlfriend the Droid Incredible yesterday, retunred that POS LG ALLY. She's not a phone fanatic like me, so she wont be changing Roms everyday. I just want to clean it up for her, remove some bloatware, speed it up, give her more battery life, etc. I know there's probably a 1000 threads about rooting the Incredible, so I do apologize, with my son and work it's very hard to search through all these topics.
I'm just curious where to begin? What is the best root method, what does S-OFF S-ON mean and so on? I'm guessing the best root method is unrEVOked, but there is a unrEVOked Forever and unrEVOked 3.22? I wish there was a F.A.Q w/ all this info. I have my Droid X rooted but it was a lot easier than this, all I did was use Z4Root and w/ 1 click I was rooted. This seems like a lot?
Rooting stock 2.2 using unrEVOked 3.22
Any information or help you guys can give me would be appreciated!

Unrevoked 3.22 is the way to go. One click root, I believe. Unrevoked forever lets you flash things without them being signed, so you can root even if there has been an update released which isn't rootable (for a while at least, the guys at unrevoked are sly ). S on just means it needs the signatures and stuff. Also, I'm not sure if unrevoked 3.22 will flash the special recovery for SLCD screens (I'm assuming that's what your wife has since it was bought yesterday). If you have a black screen with white bars on the side while in recovery, download this http://dougpiston.com/files/Recovery/PB31IMG_cwm_mod.zip rename it PB31IMG.zip and put it on the root of the sd card. Then boot into hboot, wait for it to scan and pick it up, then vol up for yes to apply. I always reboot for good measure. I'm not sure if you have to be s off or not to run that and have it work. I'm pretty sure 3.22 makes you s off anyways, so you should be good there. And if you don't want to be s off, theres a way to go back to s on again. Theres a link for it somewhere on http://unrevoked.com/forever if you wish to go back. Need anything else covered?

What is PB31IMG_cwm_mod.zip? I'm guessing "cwm" is ClockworkMod? and "hboot" is the INC's stock recovery? I'm not to sure with all these terms, it's been a long, long time since I've had a HTC phone, I was on T-Mobile. I need this broke down in even more "newbish" if you can, LOL. I know how to use sdk/adb and stuff. When she gets home, I'll post her phone details, firmware, etc. so people can get a better idea of what were working with.
Thanks.

Yep, that file is clockwork mod. And hboot is the menu that pops up after you hold either the trackpad or vol down and turn on the phone. And its ok, everybodies gotta learn sometime any other stuff that needs to be cleared up?
Edit: hardware number would help too, as it would clarify whether or not its a SLCD or AMOLED display. If its 0002, its AMOLED. If its 0003, its SLCD.

I have used Unrevoked 3.22 to root my slcd inc with the slcd friendly image.
Been using warm 2.2 and loving it.
currently sitting pretty with S-OFF and curious as to whether or not anyone has more info on forever being slcd friendly.
Also can I flash a new splash with s-off even though I have not run forever.
I also noticed that the splash screen is an .img file and was unsure if that needed to be slcd friendly, or does that not matter?
Thanks!
Comming from an HTC vogue (followed incubus, amazing dev) that was super easy to unlock/root, and even flash to nand android, the incredible was definitely a bit more of a nuisance.
Thanks to a great community who has given me a whole new appreciation for the mobile phone!!!!!
Edit: Bal, that's definitely an slcd, follow the instructions to a "T" from the faq you linked earlier. Be patient and you will do fine, I went through the exact same process...

Everything should be set for unrevoked 3.22. As the other guy said, just follow the steps exactly and you should be good to go.

Since you ran unrevoked 3.22 its like you ran forever as well. Its built in with 3.22. As long as it says s off, you should be good to change your splash to whatever you want. I don't think the splash needs to be a different format, it SHOULD be ok. Not too sure, but I don't think it would cause problems. If anyone else can shed some light on this, it would be appreciated.

Sorry for the thread jack but I rooted my phone a while ago and since than there is a system update that keeps coming back, if I enter restart and install it just counts down than stops and nothing happens, but I always keep getting the pop-up that an update is available, how could I turn that off? if becomes really annoying with it coming up all the time.
The update says its a software update of vcast, slacker and other things.
any help greatly appreciated.

If you want to make your phone think its on the latest software, go into build.prop in /system using your preferred method (adb pull, edit, adb push, or root explorer), and find the line that says "ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/xxxxxx:user/release-keys" and change the xxxxxx to 264707, (if in root explorer, save) then reboot. After the reboot, it'll nag you maybe once or twice, but then it'll go away and about>software update will say its up to date. Or, if you want to permanently disable ota updates, you can rename the file otacerts.zip (which is in /etc/security) to otacerts.zip.bak . That's just what I've heard, I can't personally vouch for that method, since I've never done it. But the build.prop works.

[Q] Questions about rooting (HBOOT & Build)

So I'm looking into this unrEVOked thing, and it seems as though I could root my EVO just fine with it. However my HBOOT is 2.02 and my build number is 3.30.651.3 (this is the part that worried me, since my friend said that a EVO with the hardware version of 0004 and that build number won't be able to be rooted).
My question is basically is there any method of rooting that I could do with no worries? Somebody mentioned to me this method right here but I want to be certain I would be alright with that before I get started. The steps aren't the issue, I'm just trying to do my homework beforehand and be sure I'm ok.
the method you linked will work. unrevoked will not. pm me or gtalk [email protected] for help. i sitll havent gotten a hboot 2.02 person to give me enough time to let me help them root.
I have a 0004 hboot 2.02 device, and used that method. I had many issues during the middle of the process, but made it through using a microSD memory card reader to rename those pc36img.zip files...
Worked great!

Hey Dkdude36, I have questions along the same lines. For hboot 2.02, what other rooting options exist that DO NOT involve the use of Unrevoked's components. Looking through the download files, you'll notice both referenced methods (this and this ) use the file unrevoked-forever. So, what gives?
I am personally on the lookout for a rooting process (for hboot 2.02) that doesnt use that method. The reason being that it's a bit tedious to unroot.
unrevoked forever is different than unrevoked. the methods are completely valid. unrevoked-forever seems to be the key ingredient in rooting 2.02

So, if I currently have hboot 2.02, and I want to 'downgrade' to the eng build .76.2000, what are the steps? Root with whatever flavor of unrevoked-forever that works with my EVO (hardware 003), then flash the hboot .76.2000 downgrade zip? I don't even understand why I need hboot 2.02 versus the earlier builds. Besides it also appears the earlier root methods (1 or 2 clicks, Simple Root 1.47.651.1,etc detailed here will not work on 2.02.).
Got around to rooting the phone just fine using the method I linked. However I can't installed CM 6.1 RC at all. It gets stuck at the white EVO 4G splash screen. I'm assuming it's an issue with 0004 EVO's?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now... Apparently it's the kernel. A guy in the official forum said he used the toast test kernel 2.6.35 and everything works, including the camera! I'm just having a hard time finding it!

I don't know if that's going to happen anytime soon. I just installed the lastest nightly with snap's 7.6 cfs kernel. Everything works, and I'm super happy! Still use Frost, Fresh, MIUI, Myn's Warm, and everything else too...
tho this may seem like a dumb question i just got my evo over the weekend and i havent stumbled upon the answer yet....how do you know what hboot you have? i see that i have hardware 004 and i see that i have the newest build number i just not sure where or how to tell the Hboot version. Any ideas? Thanks.
Just boot into hboot. Power off, and then hold power and volume down. You are now in hboot.

[Q] Gonna take a dive and root my evo.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004
Build Number 3.30.651.3
Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

[Q] Rooting a friends Evo, Please comfirm this strategy.

I already have my Evo rooted, one of the newest ones, Hardware 0004, Hboot 2.02, but I want to root a friends Evo who has no technical know-how. I already have all the SDK software on my laptop and regularly make edits to my phone. I just don't want to mess hers up. Hers is older..
Hboot 0.97.0000
Radio 2.15.00.09.01
Hardware 0003 (with crappy screen. Wow what a difference next to mine, all washed out and a pinkish hue)
Lastest software updates via the phone menu as far as I know. Forgot to check that part, wont have that phone in my hands till tomorrow again.
Can I use this method since hers has an older Hboot than mine?

don't root hers with the unrevoked3 its gaaaaaaaay she needs the leet original method. Use that guide by toastcfh like you said. I just did that and it will work easily!!!! I can help.
Just follow the instructions on toastcfh's post in the first link you posted on your first question.
Then you gotta do some updates on her new rom / kernel to test first and give her the best longing lastest battery powered phone ever! That I can help too with.

Just follow the instructions on toastcfh's post in the first link you posted on your first question.
Then you gotta do some updates on her new rom / kernel to test first and give her the best longing lastest battery powered phone ever! That I can help too with.

Someone help...will unrevoked work for 3.3?

I downloaded unrevoked 3 ive rooted mine and my girlfriends phone with no issues. However we have had our evos since the 1st day they came out. Will unrevoked work for 3.3 on the evo? If not is there a simple way someone who isnt to good with computers like myself can root these phones?

If your HBOOT version is 2.02 or 2.10, then no, unrevoked will not work.
From what I am reading... if you say you got your EVO from day 1, I assume that is June 4th, all EVOs from that date are from 0.87 HBOOT so yes, unrevoked would work for you.
Check your HBOOT version just in case.

I think he already knows that his can be rooted. He says in his question that he had no issues rooting it or his girlfriends phone.

I think what you want to know, is how to update to a 3.30.651.3 rom and keep root?
If that is what you are asking, then yes, you can look for one like in this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728
You can download it and follow the directions, its easy. You should already be rooted, so if you install a rooted rom you should be OK.
If you are still on 3.29, make sure that you have S-OFF and ran Unrevoked Forever.
BASICALLY YES I BOUGHT MY EVOS THE 1ST FRIDAY THEY CAME OUT JUNE 4TH I BELIEVE. IVE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO IT EXCEPTH DOWNLOAD UPDATES SENT BY SPRINT. I FPUND OUT ABOUT ROOTING FOR FREE WIFI. DOWNLOADED UNREVOKED. DOWNLOADED THE ANDROID DRIVERS I GUESS BC IM USING WINDOWS 7 I NEEDED THEM. PLUGGED MINE AND MY GFS PHONE IN AND BAM! UNREVOKED HAD ME ROOTED IN MINUTES. SO I START GETTING A LITTLE COCKY AND GET ON THIS FORUM AND SEE IM WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. IM TRYING MY BEST TO SOAK IN AS MUCH INFO BY READING ALOT OF THE INFO IN THE Q&A FORUMS. NOT EXZACTLY SURE WHAT FLASHING ROM IS NOT SURE WHAT A KERNEL IS. FROM READING WHAT EVERYONE ON HERE IS DOING IAM WAYYYY BEHIND THE EIGHTBALL LOL. SO WHATS A EASY WAY FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME TO ROOT THE NEW EVOS. WILL UNREVOKED WORK? ALSO WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND SOMEONE LIKE ME DO TO AN EVO THAT HASNT REALLY BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT UNREVOKED?

Ok...so you first got the EVO when it came out in June, rooted it, but then applied a Sprint OTA update and lost root?
I'm not entirely sure what you are really asking because if you already obtained root, why would you need to root it again?
No i havent lost root. My phone is rooted. My friends have the new evo with the 3.3 software. Before i tell em to drive up to baltimore from richmond i wanna make sure it will work. Thre reason i posted the info about my phone is i guess it would just be useful for people to see what exzactly i have and would need

So this spec is his phone or yours? If this is his phone, then you can use unrevoked3 (I assume since the build is 3.29, the HBOOT is 0.97 or so).
No this is my phone
He just bought his from radioshack 4 days ago so im assuming he has all the newest software. Also thanks for explaining the difference in unrevoked 3 and forever on my other thread. Im assuming i need to save any info on my phone before running unrevoked forever. Sorry to be bouncing around so much but im just so anxious to learn so heres 2 questions
1) when flashing roms, is unrevoked 3 a tool i can use. Can i just click custom then select the rom i want to flash?
2) for my buddys phone, what is the simplest way to root his phone since unrevoked will not work. Im reading the tjread everyone is referring to as 'like a boss" but its not making much sense
1. I assume from you asking about unrevoked forever, you are still S-ON and trying to get S-OFF? When you ran unrevoked3, it should've installed a custom recovery (ClockworkMOD is what unrevoked uses I believe). That's where you flash unrevoked forever and any custom ROMs later (the files need to be on the root of your SDcard - meaning not in any folders).
To get to recovery: power off, then when you turn it back on, hold down VOL DOWN and POWER and that will put you into bootloader. It may attempt to locate PC36IMG.zip/etc files but you prob won't have them which is fine, after that, select Recovery and hit Power and you should be booting into recovery.
If you can, I would suggest doing a nandroid backup of your phone so in case anything does get messed up while flashing, you can restore back. To do this, go to backup or something like that (sorry, I use Amon_RA's recovery so the wording is most likely different). Once you are backed up, go to 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', and then pick the file you want to flash. After that, reboot and you should be good to go.
Some custom ROMs require you to do a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik-cache - wipe each one twice) before you flash, so to do that you go to recovery and choose the wipe option. Stuff like radios, kernels, themes, you only need to wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
2. As for your buddy's phone....I am not too familiar with the new EVO root methods but I think the "like a boss" edition which is now updated to "Yea, I'm On Top" edition seems to be the new way to root the new EVOs until unrevoked or someone else comes out with another way. You can check out these threads to get a better understand and post in them too if you have any questions and the guys with experience when those methods should be able to help. Sorry, I can't be of too much help here.

[Q] Help Needed... Why is the Evo so hard to Root?

After having looked at the EVO threads for the last 3 days, I cannot figure out how to root my friends Evo. I have an Epic 4G and have previously worked upon the Incredible and HTC Hero. I have never had any issues rooting and or installing CWM or custom ROMs. I am beginning to think the Evo is a POS but I know that not to be true. Maybe I am just becoming frustrated with trying numerous methods including xHausx’s auto root method and having nothing work. Currently SetCPU is working with root rights but no other application that needs root rights including ROM manager will work. I can’t even install Clockwork Mod let alone find the correct thread so that I can install it. Next, there are no backups for this phone and my friend never backed up his RSA or Wimax keys. Basically, here is where the phones stands as of now… can anyone tell step by step of how to get back to stock 2.2 aka Froyo with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G working?

Not sure what you've been reading, but I had no problems rooting following this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
It is more involved than any of the 'auto' methods, but you also learn a great deal along the way.
What have you tried and what issues have you run into?
At this point, it may be a good idea to run RUU to bring it back to 100% stock before trying the method above.
what happened when you tried unrevoked or did you try that method?
From my understanding CWM sucks (sorry koush). Get Amon-Ra for recovery.
Can't think of a witty tag line. . . Swyped from my Warm Evo.
It's not that hard if you know what you're doing. The fact that it still has S-On means it's not rooted.
Before you root this phone update all the radios first. Go to Menu > Settings > System Updates and update the Profile, PRL, and HTC Software. From there read the following articles before you attempt to root again and possibly brick your friend's phone.

how do you have 2.10 hboot with 2.1???? and your baseband and software numbers are not matching up either, you are either on a different rom or took the most recent OTA then downgraded back to 2.1 which stock isnt capable.
shenanigans!
I am new to root, but I have to say, the process of rooting the Evo isn't hard.
What's hard is finding the RIGHT method to root it.

I see your problem. Your friend's EVO is still running the original 2.1 software. You just need to run Simple Root. I don't have a link since I'm posting from tapatalk but it should be easy enough to find with a search.

Good idea, I didn't notice the hboot issue before. Best thing to do is run the 3.70 RUU and then root using a method that's compatible with 3.70. I haven't kept up on the latest root methods so I don't really know which is the best one to use

Because HTC makes it difficult. We still have 1 click easy root. Get your facts straight.

So why is it so hard to find the right method? The Epic4G has just one to choose from for example. Is there a guide that tells one which one to choose? It should not be this difficult but it is.

I am trying to get my facts straight but I can tell you 1 click easy root on Evo did not work on my friends Evo and so the name is somewhat misleading. On the Epic4G, 1 click root works on every Epic. That is the big difference but I thank you for your reply.
I've seen good results from the xhausx methods, he provides support with issues during the rooting process and that impressed me
he walked another person that was having issues rooting the other day, was very knowledgeable
