Why don't you do a google search? There's a lot of information out there... even the 250 page Gingerbread user manual has been released.
It's basically just an improved UI with some extra **** added in.

it will make you more awesome and sexier to the ladies eyes, consequently, you will get laid like crazy bro....

I've never received an OTA while running a custom ROM. If you're running rooted stock, I'd keep my eyes peeled for news here before installing it, just in case it will do something to root.
Otherwise, I like to be surprised so I know very little about it other than near field communications will be built into Gingerbread.
Also, Gingerbread will go back in time and kill Hitler.

You won't get an OTA if you're running a custom ROM. But Cyanogen is bound to come out with a 2.3 version way before any official OTAs. I can't imagine it'll affect rooting etc because everyone running Cyanogen will want their phones to stay rooted.

Stevie have you misunderstood Sleef?
Official OTA updates could maybe affect ease of rooting,... when 2.1 landed for the Hero those who jumped in head first and applied the OTA got stuck for about 2 months until a new method was found.

Yeah, I was, no problem. But thanks for adding the additional info, which I should have done really - which is as you say that if course you're on a *stock* ROM and are rooted/S-OFF you should not accept/apply an OTA until it's been verified it won't lock you out of root/S-OFF !

any 2.3 ota will most certainly change the way we have to root, and it might be a while until someone works out how to do it again.
Custom 2.3 roms will be out pretty quick, even if its just a rooted stock so you have no real need to accept any ota that is offered once rooted.

It'll help you get a gf because somehow she'll realize that despite you not owning an iphone, you have gingerbread!
hehe

I probably could have been a little less vague.
Also, I'm positive that someone who knows what they're doing will take the OTA and make a flashable ROM out of it so eager folks can take it for a spin without actually applying the OTA themselves. 2.3 CyanogenMod shouldn't be too far behind.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but should the source code be made available, a dev could make a working ROM even before the G2 specific OTA, right?

Sorry this is a little off topic but I was on my cousins rooted droid x. I went on rom manager and there were much more providers for roms.

AFAIK,... The 2.3 source from Google is out,... but the 2.3 kernel from HTC is still needed before anything stable can be built (instead of trying generic builds not specifically for our device so all hardware/features will not work). HTC usually release their source after releasing the update.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong....

I don't think the source code is out yet, just the SDK. Shouldn't need a 2.3 kernel from HTC to make a stable build, I'm sure Cyanogen is up to the job.

Aha,... ok.
I assumed there would be a problem going from 2.6.32 (froyo kernel) to 2.6.35 (gingerbread) as that is where there were holdups on the Hero. Fingers crossed then.
.... a teeny bit OT... Has anyone heard of Bumptop? Or is it just me that didn't know what it was? Google took over earlier this year, and it does resemble the 3d gallery + the Android 3.0 tablet video. Just installed to my laptop,... Very nice, even without a touchscreen. Maybe that is what we have to look forward to next year?

Now that I know I can get ladies with gingerbread this will help me a lot -_-
But those of you that actually put real info thanks lol...I just getting more into android development and just want to make sure nothings gonna get messed up if I do get the ota update..cyanogen I'm sure is gonna have it ready shortly, seeings how they broke froyo pretty quick. In all entirty I was just making sure if wouldn't add s back ok somehow and increase security features.

[Q] New to EVO need some knowledge

Hey guys. I know I can always count on XDA to get my info. I just got and EVO a few days ago. I have it fully rooted using unrEVOked method. I had T-mobile before and had the MyTouch 1.2 which I learned inside and out thanks to XDA. This EVO blows that phone away. Even though I just bought this EVO, I got the 003 hardware version and not 004. First off is the only difference between the two the camera? Second what is the difference between 3.30.651.3 and 3.29.651.5? Will the 003 hardware version get the OTA update to 3.30.651.3? If I flashed a 3.30.651.3 ROM to my 3.29.651.5 phone would it cause some major problems or should I wait until the OTA comes to my phone if it does? Why would I get an outdated phone sent to me when there is an updated version available? I know these are probably n00b questions, but we all have to start somewhere. Thanks for the help in advance. I have been reading to find the answer to some of these questions, but the EVO threads are huge and am having a hard time finding the answers I am looking for.
Im running a 3.30.651.5 rom on an 003 evo with no problems but iv heard others have excessive battery drain. Id stick with an older version that is actualy for your hardware though cuz your not missing out on anything, the newest ota was for a camera fix on 004 hardware phones.
Ok thanks cynic. I don't see how the ROM would cause excessive battery drain when the only thing changed was an update for the camera. I guess I could try one of each out and see if I notice anything.
Im sure theirs more to it but thats just the major difference that i know of
I understand. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Also are the cyanogen nightlies based on 3.29 or 3.30.

Glad to help :-D im not sure about cyanogen though. It may not be either if it was built from the ground up. Shouldnt give you problems though, newest is cm6.1
Yeah I thought about cyanogen being an AOSP after I asked the question and figured since it wasn't posted in any thing that should be compatible with both. Thanks again for your time.

cyanogen is based on android source. currently it is android 2.2.1 build FRG83. sprint/htc still currently use 2.2 FRF91 or something.
So it is safe to use CM on any hardware version as long as the kernel works? Also, does anyone want to give me their experience with certain ROM? I am not asking which is best for me, but just want to get an overall on which ones are working best or are the communities favorite for the EVO. I am rooted but still running stock rom. I want to use a custom rom but am still reading & trying to get familiar with this phone & its development.
Oh yeah. One more question. I received an update while rooted. It was a PRL update. Is this normal? I know that probably sounds very n00bish, but I just thought rooted I wouldn't get any OTA's. Will I still get OTA's from Sprint while running stock rom rooted?

I run virus roms, he has a sense version and one without sense. Myns warm 2.2 is quite popular as is fresh rom.

Yes you will still get notifications to update, hardware updates are not recomended for rooted users as they may break root, but prl updates are fine

Ok so 2.3 is called gingerbread??
Can someone tell me what is so good about 2.3 and what it has or does that 2.2 does not/does not do.
Also will the EVO ever get it..

As for whether or not the Evo will get it, that is not confirmed yet. Although I'm sure Sprint might push for it. They didn't even knock out the Epic 4G's Froyo completely yet (they are close I think).
If the Evo does get it, I hope that Sprint doesn't take their sweet ass time pushing it out.

Of course. But I meant that once the OTA is out its much easier for DEVs to use that as a base to punch out their ROMs. Leaked or open sourced versions are good practice to mess around with but usually pretty bugged. But working with an OTA as a base would be better. Hurry Sprint! Gingerbread go go! I wonder if the new ASOP will be better than Sense. lol

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Manually or wait until they push it out officially.
Using my HTC Evo phone which I'm using Xda app to post
At the moment you would have to do it manually. As far a I am aware the few roms that are available are not yet completely stable, and not all the features are working. Cyanogen is working on CM7/gingerbread, but has not released a build. Sounds like they're getting close though, as he tweeted he's using it as his daily driver.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
there are 3 Gingerbread ROMs in the Android Development forum thus far. They're all in Alpha or early Beta forms currently, and for most people are not stable or feature-full enough to be daily users.
If you're new to rooting I'd shy away from flashing experimental Alpha builds unless you're ready for some troubleshooting. It might be in your best interest to wait until they are more general public ready.
If you are interested, here are the links to the 3 I'm aware of:
Comes tweaked so far. Not really stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878020
Pretty much stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877653
Pretty much stock as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881557
I've personally used the 2nd and 3rd. Both worked for me but not without some issues for sure.
Oh and no matter what, get very familiar with recovery and NAND BACKUPS (nandroid). Especially when trying these alpha roms, get used to backing up your working roms and restoring them.
Everyone is so helpful but I'm not trying to do anything with my phone until it's officialy released. I just don't know how being rooted effects updating. I don't know if I'm wording this correctly...lol sorry
what my friend is trying to tell you sinse you are rooted you have to wait untill a rom w/ gingerbread on it which he provided some for you. and if you apply it manually you may be un-rooted then until unrevoke or others can break it .
Hi all
anyone know of a fully woking gingerbread rom at this point?

New OTA update and root...

I caught wind that VZW is going to put out 2.3 OTA update soon, so here's my question.
If I'm rooted, but still on the stock Rom, which I have to put it back to, everything stock except for "root" and radio version, will the OTA update unroot my phone, or in any way mess anything up?
I will unroot it myself and put EVERYTHING back completely stock if I have to, but I'm not ready to give up the ability to WiFi tether my phone with my xbox to run xbox live.

Most likely the update will break root. Most do. But generally given a few days to a couple of weeks there is a new root method

Indeed. If they announce Gingerbread update via Facebook, it should be an update that the average Facebook user can actually get to their phone.
If they had announced here that a developer build was coming, that would have been ok. Then again, as a whole the amount of support for Desire wouldn't have been, only the announcement part.
timestamps on the files seem to suggest they have had this ready since 15th - 22nd july.
fairly last minute considering testing period
I don't remember them announcing it will be an OTA release. Even more, there was a rumor it might be a ruu. So they delivered the update on schedule, but you jumped to conclusions based on something they never promised, and now it is a problem too. It is not HTC's problem if majority of population who inhabitate Facebook's pages are idiots or not. Which they probably are
Bah so no on the air update? that sucks.
