Can I wipe contacts storage? - Desire General

I'm running out of memory, despite a2sd and app2sd, and I notice that my contacts storage was about 15mb. Can I safely clear this or should I not?

Make a backup (contacts, menu, export to SD) then clear data and import your backup again. Should be much smaller now as the growth of the contact data is somehow a bug (afterwards should be 3-6 MB, depends on the number of contacts).
Cheers

cheers for that man, mine was 20.55MB (88 contacts), now it's 4.40MB

This worked in reducing my contact storage size, but made duplicates of all contacts in my Google Contacts =\

Just did the same. Went from 29mb to 4 mb

[Q] How to backup phone only contacts?

Hi - I have created many phone-only (not gmail) contacts with high res profile photos.
How can i backup these phone only contacts?
I tried mybackup pro but that does every contact, and fails on restore anyway.
I dont want to have to create all of them again when i do full wipes...
Have you tried stock option "export to sd"? I took a backup by using this feature which is native in Desire thanks to either android or Sense, not sure which one is correct though, anyway.. u don't need to use any 3rd party app for this. (i have been using contact pics too, all of them restored after hard reset)

I'll give it a go - thanks!

There must be an option to add them to gmail account, I always create GMail/Some other MS Exchange contacts, keeps my life easy.
Well if you want to keep the mentioned hig res contact pics then the solution mentioned above is not very usable, as you will just get your contacts on a list, which the phone can import again.
If you dont need to keep those pics, just make the backup from the contacts app, and import the file to your google account through a browser. Then sync them back to your phone. And just create all future contacts as google contacts.

com.htc.socialnetwork.pro

Does anyone know what this is? I had 25mb of internal storage free and then suddenly this popped up in the applications list, takes up 15mb and now the "low storage" notification keeps showing up.
It's com.htc.socialnetwork.provider and that space is taken up by Facebook related data.

The Facebook app is already taking up almost 10mb and Contacts Storage is taking up 20. Are Facebooks contacts counted in Contacts Storage or somewhere else? I don't remember seeing the com.htc.socialnetwork.provider taking up this much space.

facebook contacts are stored in contacts storage, and com.htc.socialnetwork.provider.apk has always been there, its nessesary to run the integrated social network elements in htc sence, its stores your usernames, passwords and other related data, i used to periodically clear the data for all the things like that to reclaim some space (that was before i changed the mtd partitions on my device) lol

Oh, somehow I never noticed it before. Does yours take up 15mb of space too? Seems like a lot.

Oh ok. I have about 650 Facebook friends, and I don't use Twitter. I think it wastes a lot of space on my phone downloading all the friends, it would be nice if you could set it to just download the friends you've linked and ignore the rest.
So if I don't use Fakebook or Twitter, is it safe to remove com.htc.socialnetwork.provider completely (e.g. freezing it with Titanium Backup)?

If you don't use Facebook, I'd assume it wouldn't take up much space on your phone anyway, right?
It's really starting to annoy me how just my contacts seem to take up almost all the space on the phone and there's no room to download any new apps. Now I know why people like iPhones.

Yes. I have them all removed including their widgets. The ROM functions as normal.

I went to Settings > Accounts and Sync, and I unchecked the options to sync my Facebook contacts and feeds. But all of the contacts that it's already downloaded are still on the phone, how do I clear them? Also, will I be able to sync individual contacts if I want to, or is it all or nothing?
Thank you, th3 - that's exactly what I wanted to read I already froze all the other stuff, I just wasn't sure about this one.

[Q] Still having a problem with low space

I barely have any apps installed at all, but the "low on space" notification is always popping up. The apps taking up the most space are:
- Contacts Storage (23 mb)
- com.htc.socialnetwork.prov (20 mb)
- Mail (17 mb)
- Maps (10 mb)
- Facebook for HTC Sense (9 mb)
After that I have a few apps that are less than 3 mb, and then the rest of them are tiny (but I don't have that many, and most of them are moved to the sd card anyway).
What's going on? Why do contacts and "com.htc.socialnetwork.prov" take up so much room? I have about 600 Google contacts and 700 Facebook contacts.
My Contacts Storage seems to keep growing as well! My top 4 apps (and I can't move them off the phone to the SD card)
Contacts Storage - 13.34MB
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 - 10.96MB
Maps - 10.79MB
Facebook - 8.15MB
With Stock Rom, it might be difficult to move these. If you're rooted, a custom Rom can help move these to Sd-card, though not the contacts.
Custom Rom with Data2Sd/Data2ext can over come space issues permanently.
On Stock Roms, switching the pminstalllocation tab to External can help switch some of these to sdcard.
And your Contacts is typical, it is usual to have over 12 mb, though that can increase exponentially if you have lots of Contacts thumbnails.

Most of them have thumbnails because it downloads the Facebook pictures for the thumbnails.
Can a custom rom move the com.htc.socialnetwork thing? That's not a file that needs to be on the phone?

If you didnt want the Facebook sync, you could do that by removing the FB account, and from the People app.
If you dont want HTC Sense items, a Custom Non-Sense Rom can remove everything. Try Cyanogen.

I do want those things though. I have barely any apps installed at all except for the stock ones so I find it hard to believe that there isn't even enough space on the storage to allow for the apps that came with the phone.
It would be nice if it only downloaded the Facebook contacts that were being synced, instead of all the Facebook contacts. Right now it downloads all my contacts including the ones that I don't have in my phonebook, so there's just a bunch of peoples' email addresses and pictures that I don't need.
What exactly is com.htc.socialnetwork?

Then click on 'Contacts Storage'

Contacts Storage size?

I am syncing my contacts with google, so in total 240 contacts few of them have photos that came with google sync (facebook sync not enabled), and it takes 3,59 mb space on my phone memory.
Is it normal to take that much space for only 240 contacts?

Swyped from my HTC Desire S
I will clear data and try again but there is like only 10 photos and rest is just emails and phones

Moving from HTC Desire to HTC One X

So I have had a HTC Desire for two years, and have just ordered a new HTC One X
How do I easily move all my data over? I'm worried about contacts, photos or videos. What I am worried about is the application data. For example, I have all three stars in every level of angry birds, and don't want to lose that
Try titanium backup and contacts backup

The one has an app.to help you move data from.your old phone via bluetooth I haven't tried it though.

I did, and it doesn't backup app data.
Only thing that I got were contacts, not even my old messages or call logs.
If you want to keep your progress with Angry Birds, I recommend a Titanium backup or so.

I used the built-in app too and with the same result. Contacts only. They weren't brought across cleanly either with a fair few duplicated.
Titanium is about your only reliable option for bringing over your data from the Desire and you need root to use it.
Doesn't Titanium require root?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I am afraid that backing up your angry birds requires root permission (titanium backup)
Photos and videos might be quite abit easier. You could already make a dropbox account and put all files there.
For calls and sms I use Sms backup + which backs up calls and sms to a label in your gmail account. which i find very useful (it can also restore them)
As far as contacts go, i assume they are integrated in your gmail account or exchange server?
If not you can import them to your gmail contacts. I did this when i first got my desire and now i keep all my contacts on there. It is probably the moest useful phone related thing i have ever done.

Suprised by some of the responses. Don't you people have your contacts backed up to your Google account automatically?
Contacts - Google account so no need to do anything.
Photos/videos - Just copy them over via PC
Game data - Titanium backup
PS. I upgraded from a Desire and believe me you will not regret the decision to get a One X. It's hard to believe these two phones are only 2 years apart in terms of release date. The One X design is so sexy in comparison, it's also lighter, slimmer and the screen is unbelievably better.
As has been said
Contacts - Done via Google
Email - Done via Google
Photos/Music - SD Card backups
App Date - Rooting + Titanium
SMS - SMS Backup & Restore
I have just rooted my OneX fairly easily and everything has moved over apart from Temple Run
There is an app in the store which will be able to backup your angry birds saves without root. Just search for angry birds backup in the store
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I tried "Backup Everything" which is pre-installed on the Runnymede Desire ROM. Seemed to work from user customised standard to new ROM fairly well.
Thanks guys. This phone is awesome.
Here's what I did (as per the replies above):
- Contacts via Google
- Email via Goolge
- SMS using SMS Backup and Restore from Google Play
- Angry birds using Angry Birds Backup from Google Play
I didnt want to root my new HTC One X and invalidate the warranty, hence not using Titanium.
I am actually disappointed with Google for not making something that can easily do this. I mean, its just a case of installing the .apk files and then transferring the data.
