Does anyone know what this is? I had 25mb of internal storage free and then suddenly this popped up in the applications list, takes up 15mb and now the "low storage" notification keeps showing up.
It's com.htc.socialnetwork.provider and that space is taken up by Facebook related data.

The Facebook app is already taking up almost 10mb and Contacts Storage is taking up 20. Are Facebooks contacts counted in Contacts Storage or somewhere else? I don't remember seeing the com.htc.socialnetwork.provider taking up this much space.

facebook contacts are stored in contacts storage, and com.htc.socialnetwork.provider.apk has always been there, its nessesary to run the integrated social network elements in htc sence, its stores your usernames, passwords and other related data, i used to periodically clear the data for all the things like that to reclaim some space (that was before i changed the mtd partitions on my device) lol

Oh ok. I have about 650 Facebook friends, and I don't use Twitter. I think it wastes a lot of space on my phone downloading all the friends, it would be nice if you could set it to just download the friends you've linked and ignore the rest.
So if I don't use Fakebook or Twitter, is it safe to remove com.htc.socialnetwork.provider completely (e.g. freezing it with Titanium Backup)?

If you don't use Facebook, I'd assume it wouldn't take up much space on your phone anyway, right?
It's really starting to annoy me how just my contacts seem to take up almost all the space on the phone and there's no room to download any new apps. Now I know why people like iPhones.

Yes. I have them all removed including their widgets. The ROM functions as normal.

I went to Settings > Accounts and Sync, and I unchecked the options to sync my Facebook contacts and feeds. But all of the contacts that it's already downloaded are still on the phone, how do I clear them? Also, will I be able to sync individual contacts if I want to, or is it all or nothing?
Thank you, th3 - that's exactly what I wanted to read I already froze all the other stuff, I just wasn't sure about this one.

All,
After replacing a TP2 with a not-so-good button, I had the joy of re-doing all my contacts. Even though I had the contacts backed up in multiple forms (myphone, sim card copies, etc), I still had to re-enter all the ringtones and facebook account connections. No fun!
How can I make a safe backup copy of ALL the contact data? Not just the least-common-denominator data that all phones share, but ALL the data including TP2-specific items like FB links and ringtones?
Thanx,
/Mark
Try Pim Backup.
No joy, PIM backup does not include the Facebook link.
To recap, I am trying to find a COMPLETE backup tool, which can backup Contacts, including Ringtones and Facebook links.
HTC people, is there anything for this? Please let me know what I can do. Otherwise, I'll be very unlikely to take advantage of hotfixes (which I understand must wipe the device).
Thanx,

People might start thinking I am working for Google, but I am not. If you use Gmail, you can sync with Gmail using Exchange and the photos are synced back and forth, which means that they keep their facebook pictures or any other picture used.

I don't work for Google, but I may apply...
i dont know of any app that saves the facebook link in contacts, but what i've done is renamed all my contacts to how their names are spelled on facebook and it took care of the issue for me.

Yea, this is the easiest way to do it, but you don't need the full name. Just the first name or the first part of their name. It will list the closest match and you just go through each one and select them.
BTW, the Gmail thing saves the pictures only, not the link. Still, I was thinking that was a pretty cool thing because it also reflects that in Gmail apps.
so i deleted friendstream and what not so i can't use the fb that's integrated into sense to update my contacts with fb.. is there any way to do this with the facebook for android app from the market? I remember on my moto droid I could, but it doesn't seem like I have that option int he people app on my DInc.. anyone?

you can try socialite, I think it is in the market, if not you can find it in the interwebs, that and htc sense are the only ways I know of to syn FB contacts.
I think that it has to do with the android version of FB available from the market using the INC. I agree that on my motoDroid I had no problems syncing contacts, and I can guarantee there was no sense running on that
There's some sort of bug... Facebook shows up in Accounts & sync when you click Add Account, but when you select it there's an error or two in logcat and you're kicked back a screen.
If you look at the app's permissions, it IS allowed to read/write contact data, as well as sync settings. It just doesn't work at the moment.
Has anyone managed to figure this out? I'm a bit OCD about my contact pictures :-(
im OCD too, which is why thats one area id never want removed, i understand its to cleanup the phone and all but maybe its better to keep things plugged in so that everything can work and then move on removing things systematically from there. I admit im no programmer at all so i dont know where to ever begin but mi just giving a basic train of thought that id follow.
Afaik, you need Friendstream and Facebook for sense to have contacts sync.
I had to install both again, with the obex for each, to get this working on a custom rom.
There are a couple of ways to sync fb contacts to google contacts, but I haven't tried any of them. Use google to find them. After that you can keep the pictures synced with an app called "syncmypix"

You shouldn't need Friendstream to sync contacts (see Moto Droid). The native Twitter app integrated just fine despite Peep being installed. The Facebook app is poorly written so it doesn't sync on the Droid Incredible. This might be because Friendstream is 'supposed' to do it, so native syncing is disabled? Editing build.prop and a few other files is necessary to create a friendly environment... but it'd be easier if Facebook just fixed their apk.
Syncmypix looks like a nice stop-gap for now though

if you just need contact pics from facebook..not updates or profiles linked...use facebook sync. its an app in the market, not affliliated with Facebook, so it works perfectly. used on my stock incredible and now on my 2.2 rom rooted incredible.

oddly enough, i actually am a programmer, haha.. but I agreet hat sometimes it's better to keep things installed if they're working.. problem was, friendstream wasn't working.. I removed it and fb because I was getting the bg fc's from the friendstream sync issue and got sick of having to re-setup my fb every time..
I barely have any apps installed at all, but the "low on space" notification is always popping up. The apps taking up the most space are:
- Contacts Storage (23 mb)
- com.htc.socialnetwork.prov (20 mb)
- Mail (17 mb)
- Maps (10 mb)
- Facebook for HTC Sense (9 mb)
After that I have a few apps that are less than 3 mb, and then the rest of them are tiny (but I don't have that many, and most of them are moved to the sd card anyway).
What's going on? Why do contacts and "com.htc.socialnetwork.prov" take up so much room? I have about 600 Google contacts and 700 Facebook contacts.
My Contacts Storage seems to keep growing as well! My top 4 apps (and I can't move them off the phone to the SD card)
Contacts Storage - 13.34MB
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 - 10.96MB
Maps - 10.79MB
Facebook - 8.15MB
With Stock Rom, it might be difficult to move these. If you're rooted, a custom Rom can help move these to Sd-card, though not the contacts.
Custom Rom with Data2Sd/Data2ext can over come space issues permanently.
On Stock Roms, switching the pminstalllocation tab to External can help switch some of these to sdcard.
And your Contacts is typical, it is usual to have over 12 mb, though that can increase exponentially if you have lots of Contacts thumbnails.

Most of them have thumbnails because it downloads the Facebook pictures for the thumbnails.
Can a custom rom move the com.htc.socialnetwork thing? That's not a file that needs to be on the phone?

If you didnt want the Facebook sync, you could do that by removing the FB account, and from the People app.
If you dont want HTC Sense items, a Custom Non-Sense Rom can remove everything. Try Cyanogen.

I do want those things though. I have barely any apps installed at all except for the stock ones so I find it hard to believe that there isn't even enough space on the storage to allow for the apps that came with the phone.
It would be nice if it only downloaded the Facebook contacts that were being synced, instead of all the Facebook contacts. Right now it downloads all my contacts including the ones that I don't have in my phonebook, so there's just a bunch of peoples' email addresses and pictures that I don't need.
What exactly is com.htc.socialnetwork?

Try installing the app from market.android.com. I've run into this with some larger apps installing from the market app. What I found with logcat was it was having problems clearing the application cache.
The only solution I found was to install the app from the market website.

I've run into low space a couple of times and each time it's been one of two things: either my email cache was gigantic and I had to delete or completely wipe my mail accounts; or it was my SMS file (I think it came up as the phone log file). I didn't have my stock SMS set to remove old texts past 200 and it had bloated up my SMS app. Hope that helps.

That's possible. Go settings/Applications/Manage Applications, click on the all tab, press menu and sort by size. See if Dialer is at the top or near the top of the list. If it is, then it's probably your sms/mms app (all your texts are stored here). Try deleting some strings if you have a bunch, when I had the issue I had some strings in the thousands and they took a while to delete. Since you have the limit of 200, I doubt this is the issue, unless you have a lot of high res mms texts.
If Dialer isn't near the top of your App list, take a look at which apps are. Can they be moved to the SD Card? There's always the option of deleting the apps if you don't really use/need them.
I don't have that many apps though..total I have about 24ish and dialer was no where near the top

I'd say it was a market issue then, and not your phone. You have plenty of free space. Maybe it was a wifi only download, I'm out of ideas at this point.

I've disabled the Google Photo sync option in accounts settings but i still see my google+ albums in the gallery app, is there a way to stop them showing? I thought unchecking that would do it.
You go into your settings for applications. Then you find the gallery app, and clear the data. Don't worry you won't lose your pictures. When that's done open your gallery app and it should redo everything

This didn't work for me.
The irony is that I was a couple of days ago I was insulting Apple's Photostream for not being able to delete any images without resetting the whole Photostream.
So I've already turned of syncing Google photos on both of my accounts, and I cleared the data for the Gallery app ... and all my images from Picassa are still there. I turned off Google+ sync just to check (I don't do any instant upload or anything like that anyway) and the images of both my accounts are still present after clearing the data in the Gallery app.
Help. Please.
Have a read through this bud
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362232
Don't know if you want to go to that extent but it seems like clearing the data from google+ will get rid of it.
Your problem is that the picasa pictures are still in the sd card cache folder of the gallery. Delete everything in the cache folder, it's under "/sdcard/android/data/com.android.sec.gallery3d" in honeycomb, it may be somewhere else in ICS.
After that clear data of the gallery again and the picasa folder is gone.
A combination of dumb donkey and gokpog.
1. Went to "/sdcard/android/data/com.android.gallery3d" (no .sec in ICS) and deleted everything in the cache.
2. Deleted data in Gallery app.
3. Deleted data in Google+ app.
And then I accidentally hit "Refresh". D'oh!
You actually only need to do numbers 2 and 3 above to get rid off the images. Though I found out (with help) how to do get rid of the unwanted albums, for the average buyer who doesn't come to these forums, it's way too hard. It shouldn't be this way. It's almost as bad as Apple's Photostream!

i noticed even with photosync still off
opening google plus and having instant upload on, returns the albums to the gallery
gahh
Why not just remove your Google account and add it again? Immediately afterwards, click on Google Sync and uncheck Picasa or photos or whatever.. That's what i always do after adding a Google account.
Gah!
I've tried clearing both the Google+ app cache and Gallery cache, plus deleting the contents of the Google+ app folder in the relevant path on the SD card, and still the albums reappear in Gallery as soon as I run the G+ app again. AAAARGHHH.
Does that mean that deleting the offending albums from the Android Gallery will also delete the Google+ albums? Because that would be irritating, to say the least.
Clear your gallery, then use Droidwall to blacklist the gallery and any offending processes?
Unfortunately, you may also have to blacklist G+
I always hated that I just couldn't delete these albums..
It drove me nuts so I just deleted Picassa from my main gmail account and set it up on a secondary gmail account so now it's gone.
to me it's the same, how I can hide the google + gallery in the gallery? I tried a thousand things and I can`t. help me!
I don't wish to hijack the thread, but seems like the best place to ask this question. Is there a way to reset the thumbnails in the Gallery and + app? I changed them online (some were inappropriate to have as thumbnails), but no matter what I seem to clear, the old thumbnails stick. I have cleared the data from both apps, and have even gone as far as even removing the Google account and readding it, and the old thumbnails still return.
