I am syncing my contacts with google, so in total 240 contacts few of them have photos that came with google sync (facebook sync not enabled), and it takes 3,59 mb space on my phone memory.
Is it normal to take that much space for only 240 contacts?

I've uploaded a few pics for profiles. they look great on the screen but when I choose them for profiles the quality goes massively downhill (really pixilated / blocky).
anyone else finding this?
thanks

I have also found this and tough it isn't a solution, i can say that if you use the facebook pic (by linking the contact to their facebook) then the pic is good quality.
ummmm, good shout but I'm not really a Facebook user.
seems ridiculous that we can't make use of the fantastic screen!
I'm sure there must be s solution!

I've got this problem too, most annoying. I've discovered this post on another forum, not so much a solution just an explanation of why it happens.
Disclaimer: This refers to the Hero, which suffers from the same problem. Hopefully this solution works on the Droid too.
I was just playing around with this for a while, and I think I know what's going on. More importantly, I have a fix, albeit an annoying one. bruceo touched on it with his reference to the cloud and disabling sync. Google Contacts images are natively 96x96. Enlarged contact photos on the Hero (when a call is inbound/outbound) look to be roughly 210x210.
I put a 320x480 image on my card (Hero's native res) and made that a 210x210 contact image using the default crop square on the phone. It looked fine at first, but 5 minutes later it looked horrible.
I suspect Google Contacts is syncing with the phone, but at the same time it's downscaling the photo to fit within the 96x96 Google Contacts constraint. The next time your phone and Google Contacts communicate, the filesizes don't match, so voila... latest timestamp wins and your phone pulls the new image from Google Contacts. Now your contacts list (on the phone) is referencing a 96x96 image for a 210x210 display... and the end result is ugly.
If you disable syncing between your phone and Google Contacts (Settings>Data Synchronization>Google>Contacts - uncheck), the image will NOT be overwritten. Of course the downside is you will need to make any future changes in both locations. But hey, at least your pictures won't look horrible.

I have the same problem with my HTC Touch HD. Any picture that is selected for a contact is reduced in quality. Must be a HTC thing not android.
I don't sync my contacts with google but the profile pictures are sill pixalated.
Synching with Outlook 2007 also degrades the image as it can't handle the higher quality images so degrades them, then would synch that lower quality image back to the phone
is there any workaround? When adding the pictures to the phone via phone, they are very sharp, but as soon as you sync with outlook or google, the pictures become very pixelated...
in addition, my facebook pics look a little bit sharper - however, my contacts do not update with the latest contact pictures...
This is the workaround i've used, not ideal but it does work
Here's the workaround for HTC Desire (and probably for other devices with Sense UI):
You should create additional contact and save it in phone memory. Contact info can be empty and it's not important what name you'll choose.
Then you should add a photo for this contact.
Next step is to create a link in People between this new contact and that one stored in Gmail account. By pressing Menu key during link creation you have access to options to choose name and photo for this "linked contact". You should choose photo from "Phone".
The result is you have high quality photo in your caller ID!
Also, you have duplicate contacts: one from Google account (but it's still synchronized!! , second from your phone internal memory. But it's not a problem - you won't see those duplicates as long as they're linked.

This works great, thanks!
Its ridiculous that we even need to do this! Is there an app / automatic workaround that can sort the contact image quality?!
Outlook/Activsync
Does anyone know of a work around or fix for syncing HC photos with outlook... I'm using the HD2 which principle should be the same....
I'm currently using the workaround, of storing a HD 270x270 photo on SD card... This method is tooo time constraining.. Rather do in outlook.
I would hate to have to redo over 250+ contacts when I update the rom.

now i'm stuck with those crappy icons as well. last times, when i used MyBackup Pro to retore my contacts it restored them to the phone's memory (where it got them from), but these times it just forces itself on my google account and here we go: blurry contact pics.
is there still no solution to this? this size is really really bad
Remember to export the phone contacts otherwise you will need to add them manually in case of factory reset.

There is kind of.....
The problem as stated many times before is Gmail down-scaling the pic to rubbish, seems people are having the same problem with Outlook 2007. I only just started to have this problem when I moved all my contacts from Outlook 2010 to Gmail. Outlook 2010 handles a larger picture for contacts and I never experienced this problem until moving to Gmail for my contacts so I didn't have to use a cable to Sync >> Crap idea, I would rather have to sync once a week via cable then get the crappy contact pics!!
If Gmail handled a larger contact pic we all would be sorted!

Unfortunately, this is a limitation with Outlook and there is no workaround at the PC end.
Does anyone know what this is? I had 25mb of internal storage free and then suddenly this popped up in the applications list, takes up 15mb and now the "low storage" notification keeps showing up.
It's com.htc.socialnetwork.provider and that space is taken up by Facebook related data.

The Facebook app is already taking up almost 10mb and Contacts Storage is taking up 20. Are Facebooks contacts counted in Contacts Storage or somewhere else? I don't remember seeing the com.htc.socialnetwork.provider taking up this much space.

facebook contacts are stored in contacts storage, and com.htc.socialnetwork.provider.apk has always been there, its nessesary to run the integrated social network elements in htc sence, its stores your usernames, passwords and other related data, i used to periodically clear the data for all the things like that to reclaim some space (that was before i changed the mtd partitions on my device) lol

Oh ok. I have about 650 Facebook friends, and I don't use Twitter. I think it wastes a lot of space on my phone downloading all the friends, it would be nice if you could set it to just download the friends you've linked and ignore the rest.
So if I don't use Fakebook or Twitter, is it safe to remove com.htc.socialnetwork.provider completely (e.g. freezing it with Titanium Backup)?

If you don't use Facebook, I'd assume it wouldn't take up much space on your phone anyway, right?
It's really starting to annoy me how just my contacts seem to take up almost all the space on the phone and there's no room to download any new apps. Now I know why people like iPhones.

Yes. I have them all removed including their widgets. The ROM functions as normal.

I went to Settings > Accounts and Sync, and I unchecked the options to sync my Facebook contacts and feeds. But all of the contacts that it's already downloaded are still on the phone, how do I clear them? Also, will I be able to sync individual contacts if I want to, or is it all or nothing?
Thank you, th3 - that's exactly what I wanted to read I already froze all the other stuff, I just wasn't sure about this one.
I barely have any apps installed at all, but the "low on space" notification is always popping up. The apps taking up the most space are:
- Contacts Storage (23 mb)
- com.htc.socialnetwork.prov (20 mb)
- Mail (17 mb)
- Maps (10 mb)
- Facebook for HTC Sense (9 mb)
After that I have a few apps that are less than 3 mb, and then the rest of them are tiny (but I don't have that many, and most of them are moved to the sd card anyway).
What's going on? Why do contacts and "com.htc.socialnetwork.prov" take up so much room? I have about 600 Google contacts and 700 Facebook contacts.
My Contacts Storage seems to keep growing as well! My top 4 apps (and I can't move them off the phone to the SD card)
Contacts Storage - 13.34MB
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 - 10.96MB
Maps - 10.79MB
Facebook - 8.15MB
With Stock Rom, it might be difficult to move these. If you're rooted, a custom Rom can help move these to Sd-card, though not the contacts.
Custom Rom with Data2Sd/Data2ext can over come space issues permanently.
On Stock Roms, switching the pminstalllocation tab to External can help switch some of these to sdcard.
And your Contacts is typical, it is usual to have over 12 mb, though that can increase exponentially if you have lots of Contacts thumbnails.

Most of them have thumbnails because it downloads the Facebook pictures for the thumbnails.
Can a custom rom move the com.htc.socialnetwork thing? That's not a file that needs to be on the phone?

If you didnt want the Facebook sync, you could do that by removing the FB account, and from the People app.
If you dont want HTC Sense items, a Custom Non-Sense Rom can remove everything. Try Cyanogen.

I do want those things though. I have barely any apps installed at all except for the stock ones so I find it hard to believe that there isn't even enough space on the storage to allow for the apps that came with the phone.
It would be nice if it only downloaded the Facebook contacts that were being synced, instead of all the Facebook contacts. Right now it downloads all my contacts including the ones that I don't have in my phonebook, so there's just a bunch of peoples' email addresses and pictures that I don't need.
What exactly is com.htc.socialnetwork?

Hi there,
for anyone using Go SMS pro on their HOX, are you contacts pictures showing up at all?
For some reason, none of my contacts pictures show up in my contact list on go sms, even though they show up on the stock app. I've turned it on in the settings and even ticked in the facebook settings that I want the pictures displayed but nothing at all. Its not just fb pics that arent showing, nothing at all. Any help would be appreciated.
You have to either use photos from your phone or download an app like HAXSYNC and upload the photos from there... For whatever reason Facebook for Sense photos don't show in GoSMS or other 3rd party apps...
U have to go thru your contacts one by one and modify the photos either choosing a photo in your gallery of the facebook photo from HAXSYNC account...
Giant pain in the ass but it works...
So I take it this is a Sense 4 issue then? Cause I never had that problem with other versions of sense
The pics all show up fine on my go sms. Didnt have to install any other apps

I have a similar problem with sony ericssons life contacts widget.
It worked flawlessly on my GN, showing me pretty pictures of my most popular contacts. But on the one X, no... even though I'm using nova launcher.

did HaxSync work properly with your FB account?
I have about 300+ contacts on fb, and HaxSync only syncs about 120 of them. The official fb app syncs all of the contacts which have FB (ca. 280)...
I had all my contact pics in GoSMS fine until the 1.82 update on my att hox. They won't sync now. It's annoying. I'd rather not install a 3rd party app especially since it was working on the phone once.
Edit- so, I cleared fb Data, removed it with es file explorer. Reinstalled from market and no go.
Hi,
Couldn't find discussion about it here.
Not sure if its cause screen resulotion, but i hate seeing my contacts so pixelate.
I've tried Sense 4.0 included sync, tried HaxSync to max resolution, same.
Is there any solution to it ?
no way the picture in Facebook itself is so low quality
Checked the small thumbnail on facebook and its 200 × 150 pixels with 72ppi.
This might work. I haven't tried it.
it does update gmail contacts from the phone directory, i hove too much contact to sync with.
Nothing with Facebook ?
Well, i guess its HTC specific issue with HaxSync
