Ok, so tell me, I buy into a contract to purchase a phone. Signed, sealed, and delivered. Take MY phone home, install acbtaskman on it, discover device could perform better if a startup app, (above mentioned process and obfuscated startup procedure) is not using almost 6MB of RAM, along with a few other offenders, kill said task, and it farkin starts up again, ok, so it is a monitored process.
Does this mean that I can charge rent for undesired poor device performance due to uncontrollable loss of cpu cycles and RAM resulting in poor performance of a device that I think I own?
Am I making any sense to anyone? Or is there the off chance that AT&T's 6.5 ROM doesn't really suck?
?Glitch
I get that you seem upset but you're not being clear. Are you pissed off that Opera is auto-loading into memory?
If so, this is because of the Push Internet "feature" of our devices. It's ironic that this is one of the selling points because most people disable it to save memory.
There's a couple of cabs available to disable it. Search for "disable push internet".

Thank you, I was actually wondering what could be so important as to sacrafice 6MB of RAM in a seemingly monitored process. Funny thing is I don't even have any Push Internet items configured for download, curious in the logic that a TF3D tab would be bothered lauching the opera9.exe process with no work to do... Go figure...
Strange
My Opera is not eating too much mb´s!
Have you considered to change the version?
Have a look on my sig
You may want to check out the e2 AT&T lite custome ROM. It's virtually identical to the AT&T rom, but without all the junk that you don't need. (Link is in my sig)

Funny thing is that this does not always fix it, I've tried and tried, does not help. I do not run TF3D, disabled push, etc, yet Opera randomly is still running.

Disabling it via the GUI in TF3D/Sense or disabling TF3D/Sense altogether will not help.
You didn't search "disable push internet" as I suggested. If you did, you would have been linked to here. Just follow the instructions there.

Installed the cab long ago, thanks..
Ok, so I got my new EVO last week. I haven't updated to the new 2.2 (Froyo) yet, though I keep getting the popup saying I should do it. I'll get around to it eventually .. lol. Anyway, my question is ... my battery seems to drain rather quickly throughout the day. I'm not necessarily doing anything spectacular, I have gmail and an exchange (outlook) mail account that are synching .. oh, and the weather widget and bluetooth is always on. I do check my facebook account every once in a while but don't keep it running all the time (at least I don't think it is ... I didn't add the widget, rather just the app to my home screen). I am not putzing with my phone all the time but here it is, almost 2:30 and my battery is at 47% since unplugging it from the charger at 6am. Will updating to 2.2 help with my battery issue? How can I see what is draining my battery?
Yea I'm having the same problem ... IDK I got task killer but its not helping

to check your battery there are apps in the market for that... you can also go to menu --- settings-- about phone---battery---battery use. Also try these tips from this website it has worked wonders for me on my stock rooted Evo http://www.techhackz.com/2010/06/how-to-increase-your-htc-evo-4g-battery.html
You're not doing terrible compared to most users, although I'll bet Bluetooth is taking a significant amount of juice. Froyo isn't a magical battery saver, though it is supposedly more efficient. You may be better of rooting and getting an undervolted ROM in combination with some conservative "Screen off" SetCPU profiles.
Three things: First, you can turn off the OTA notification by going into your settings menu - Software Update and turning off the scheduled check. You'll still be able to check manually whenever you want. Second, turning off "always on mobile data" will save a good amount of battery, but you'll lose Gmail push and some other minor things. Third, think long and hard before you accept that 2.2 OTA update. It can't be rooted yet, you can't go back to 2.1, and we still don't know if/when a root method will be found. If you want Froyo and there's a 0.001% chance you might want to root sometime in the future, you're better off rooting NOW and flashing a ROOTED stock OTA update from the Development section.
Just my thoughts.
Ok, so I downloaded System Panel (the free version for now) from the Market and was able to identify some things that were running that I thought were closed. Not sure what, if any, impact that will have ... time will tell. Here's my next question. After going to Settings/Applications/Running services I'm trying to figure out what some of these things are to determine if I need them running:
Mail - MailService (I'm guessing this is my Gmail?)
Mail - EASDirectpush (I'm guessing this is my Exchange (Outlook)?)
Calendar - ObexService (ummm ... is this my synch'd calendar from Outlook?)
Calendar - ConnectivityService (no idea what this is?)
Touch Input - Touch Input (is it as self explanatory as it sounds?)
HTC DM - HtcDmService (no idea what this is?)
HTC IQAgent - AgentService (no idea what this is?)
com.smithmicro.dm - DMServiceApp (no idea what this is?)

Thats not the functionality you want out of systempanel - what you're refferring to here is essentially using it as a task killer, which you shouldn't be using. Those items will just keep restarting - it's more efficient to just leave them in the background where they're not using cpu or battery.
The main functionality of systempanel lies only in the bought version, I'm afraid. What it does is allow you to set it up to monitor your phone - so you can go back to it a day later and see how your battery, cpu, and device usage were affected over a period of time.
Honestly though, for non-rooted, you're not doing too bad on battery. If you want better, you're probably going to want to root, which will allow you to use custom ROMs and kernels that allow overclocking and underclocking. And also allow you to remove bloatware.
Regardless if your rooted or not, make sure you go into all of the stock apps, like talk, stocks, news, etc, and set them up to never login and never sync. Then install the network app from the market and make sure that you're set to cdma auto prl. this should help.
And note what SilverZero mentioned - CURRENTLY THERE IS NO WAY TO ROOT AFTER THE 2.2 OTA UPGRADE. This really can't be stressed enough. So if you do decide to go through with the OTA, your options will be very limited for any tweaking.
Average apps that run on everyones phone. those apps are running on mine as we speak and I am still getting good battery life. I have been off the charger since 7a.m. and I am at 78% phone calls and text with wifi and 3g running all day. try that link I posted
This may sound like a real stupid noob question but if I root my phone do I have to flash a ROM? Or will the stock ROM (2.1) still be there?

stock rom will be there - you have the option to flash a rom once rooted, but if you want, you can just stop once rooted - some people root just to be able to run titanium backup.
noob. jk ;-)
Hi, hoping that someone out there will have some answers or solutions for me! My boyfriend is knowledgeable enough to help me flash new roms/radios to my phone, but is not confident enough to change anything like overclocking, or any of the advanced settings in my current rom, CM 7.2
Even back in 7.0 and 7.1, my phone was always losing signal--for example, losing data connectivity in my office for several hours! This is using the radio that comes with 7.2, as well as several others (my current radio is 12.28h.60.140fU_26.06.02.25). I'm kind of at my wits end---it's frustrating when everyone around me is using their phone no problem and I can't even get a signal because my phone is saying it lost data connectivity because it's out of range/roaming! Is this an issue I could bring up with my wireless provider, or is this a rom or hardware issue?
My other current concern is that in the last week, my phone has been running very slowly--there is a delay almost every time I press an icon, whether it be messaging, gmail, or facebook. Facebook and other apps have been especially slow--if I haven't opened it recently, it will take about 10 seconds to start loading, with a black screen in the mean time. I've tried switching apps from the phone to the SD card and back, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'd hate to re-install the rom and go through the work of changing all of my settings if it ends up not fixing anything (waiting for an official release of CM9 anyways). Is there any settings I can change that would speed it up?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
your best off trying a new radio and flashing your rom over, yeah this can suck but im sure it will be well worth the time spent in the end.
you can restore most apps+data to the same point with titanium backup
if you use a custom launcher most of those settings can be backed up
sms backup + will take care of messages and call logs for you
really it wont take too long and you will be much much happier.
just make sure to do a full wipe when you reflash the rom
and when you change radios you can wipe efs and change ril-libs
this may also help out a lot -- here is some info
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335127
again - read through this material first - do a full wipe - reflash rom - try new radio -
wipe efs and change ril-libs
you are now happy... after you restore everything to your desire!
do a nandroid!
I think that what demkantor said regarding radio and the sorts is pretty solid. Radios are a trial and error thing, it's different for everyone, so test and see what works for you in terms of performance/battery life.
Performance wise, if you like CyanogenMod, I would highly recommend switching to ILWT CM7. It is considerably faster and has better battery life when compared to official CM. You can find it under the development section in this forum.
From there you can use the Supercharger V6 script, which also adds a boost most welcome. Try to avoid using task killers, they'll only slow down the phone as it will try to restore the killed processes. Also, try to keep your app count as low as possible. Having many apps slows things down A LOT. Ideally you should only keep the apps you need, in addition to 20~ complimentary (games and so on). There are also other apps called 'rogue'. They tend to hog your system resources and drain battery. You should notice this by looking at the battery stats/running processes windows. You'll have to
From there, you can achieve more performance you can overclock. My suggestion is to use CPU Tuner, get familiarized with it and set up some profiles, in order to preserve battery as it degrades.
(Hopefully) last edit: I wish I could add more to this subject but my provider's reception up here does not allow me to. I hope the above info will suffice.

OK, first of all, @demkantor, Titanium Backup is awesome! it kept all of my presets for EVERYTHING. Thanks for that referral!
I reflashed CM7.2 last night and all seems good so far--not as laggy as it had been, though I haven't opened tons of programs since last night, either.
I will take a look at the efs and ril-lib details--I've used that thread to find radios before, but kind of ignored those subjects, since the new radios technically worked, but not WELL.
@crestofawave Thanks, I might try ILWTCM7, at least until CM9 comes out, because battery life has also definitely always been an issue for me. However, not super confident about adding the supercharger V6 script and fiddling around with my CPU. Is there any sort of beginner's guide you can recommend for doing this? If I switch to ILWTCM7 but don't run the script or overclock, can I still expect a significant change in performance/battery life?
I really can't do much else about reducing battery usage--I've recently switched to the paid versions of some games, to eliminate those battery-eating ads I hear so much about, and I keep bluetooth, GPS, and WIFI off unless I am actively using them.
Is there are anyway to force a marketplace update check? If there is no manual way, would it be possible to make an app to have the marketplace check for updates?
I've searched all over, but never really found a solid answer on this. Thanks for any help!

Ahh I see. I knew about that lil trick, but it is a lil inconvenient to check several apps with this method. That at least gets the job done though. I was hoping there was a method that would check everything on the phone at once. Not sure how the OS does the app checking, but I've heard it just does it 'periodically". Not sure how often that is, but I have seen where it find updates for certain apps, but it didn't on others when there was an update for it. Kinda strange however it does it's checks.
Would it be possible to make an app that forces the marketplace to do a full check on apps?

Yeah some have said turning wifi on and leaving to charger (this keeps wifi on in some phones?) helps the phone getting updates.
I'm guessing it is not possible to make such app, due to limitations of the platform. But maybe one could make an app which checks the selected apps from marketplace, lets say once in an hour, and then notifies the user if the app has been updated. How this would be better than let the marketplace check for updates? Dunno, maybe in some cases little bit faster, but it would be wasting resources (battery) in my option.
Maybe its just better to let the marketplace check for updates
Thanks for the info/help. I understand what you mean. I guess I'm a lil impatient with certain apps and their frequent updates. So the entire problem here is me.
Does WP8 have the same issue of delayed and overlooked update on certain apps?
Im using a HTC 10 (EU variant). Today i was scrolling through "Netguard" (if you dont know it, its an app to prevent other apps from internet access), since i configured it to show system apps it displays way more apps than the normal app overview in the settings. In there i found an app called "RootPA" and one called "root", which seems strange since i didnt unlock the bootloader or root on my own. The details in the RootPA entry say "com.gd.mobicore.pa", no idea if thats helpfull to determine the origin of this mysterious app.
Can you help me with this?
Did you Google it?
I did, but the results were not realy usefull. I found someone with a modded Galaxy S3 who deleted a RootPA on accident and broke stuff, but that ssems unrelated. Are there any things i could do to find out more about the app installed on my phone without root?
I cant say its something I've ever seen. If this person in the past removed it, and it broke stuff, that would suggest that it may have been a system app and he was rooted. From what I managed to find on google, it is part of a security suite (mobicore) used by networks to monitor what the state of the phone is, presumably incase something happens, and it was the user fault, and they know for a fact because they have logs of what the phone has done.
[ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE] Allows applications to access information about networks
[INTERNET] Allows applications to open network sockets. (i.e send information)
[READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE] Allows an application to read from external storage.
[READ_PHONE_STATE] Allows read only access to phone state.
A friend of mine got his HTC 10 2 days ago, ill ask him to look for this app. Its unlikely we would have the same virus/whatever installed.
Edit: He just reseted his 10 (due to missing language options, but thats another topic), but still found "root" and "rootPA" on his phone, so its preinstalled (although i still dont understand whats its purpose).
RootPA is provides service for provisioning secure applications that run on ARM trustzone and t-base OS (formerly mobicore). It is preinstalled in some vendors Android devices (search for this string on the internet: htc-devices-to-incorporate-trustonic-t-base-tee), but mostly unused as far as I know. The source code of some versions is available on the Internet (e.g. on github /Faryaab/android_hardware_samsung_slsi_exynos5410/tree/master/mobicore/rootpa).
It has nothing to to with rooting or unrooting the device.
