Ok, so I got my new EVO last week. I haven't updated to the new 2.2 (Froyo) yet, though I keep getting the popup saying I should do it. I'll get around to it eventually .. lol. Anyway, my question is ... my battery seems to drain rather quickly throughout the day. I'm not necessarily doing anything spectacular, I have gmail and an exchange (outlook) mail account that are synching .. oh, and the weather widget and bluetooth is always on. I do check my facebook account every once in a while but don't keep it running all the time (at least I don't think it is ... I didn't add the widget, rather just the app to my home screen). I am not putzing with my phone all the time but here it is, almost 2:30 and my battery is at 47% since unplugging it from the charger at 6am. Will updating to 2.2 help with my battery issue? How can I see what is draining my battery?

to check your battery there are apps in the market for that... you can also go to menu --- settings-- about phone---battery---battery use. Also try these tips from this website it has worked wonders for me on my stock rooted Evo http://www.techhackz.com/2010/06/how-to-increase-your-htc-evo-4g-battery.html
You're not doing terrible compared to most users, although I'll bet Bluetooth is taking a significant amount of juice. Froyo isn't a magical battery saver, though it is supposedly more efficient. You may be better of rooting and getting an undervolted ROM in combination with some conservative "Screen off" SetCPU profiles.
Three things: First, you can turn off the OTA notification by going into your settings menu - Software Update and turning off the scheduled check. You'll still be able to check manually whenever you want. Second, turning off "always on mobile data" will save a good amount of battery, but you'll lose Gmail push and some other minor things. Third, think long and hard before you accept that 2.2 OTA update. It can't be rooted yet, you can't go back to 2.1, and we still don't know if/when a root method will be found. If you want Froyo and there's a 0.001% chance you might want to root sometime in the future, you're better off rooting NOW and flashing a ROOTED stock OTA update from the Development section.

Not sure what, if any, impact that will have ... time will tell. Here's my next question. After going to Settings/Applications/Running services I'm trying to figure out what some of these things are to determine if I need them running:

Thats not the functionality you want out of systempanel - what you're refferring to here is essentially using it as a task killer, which you shouldn't be using. Those items will just keep restarting - it's more efficient to just leave them in the background where they're not using cpu or battery.
The main functionality of systempanel lies only in the bought version, I'm afraid. What it does is allow you to set it up to monitor your phone - so you can go back to it a day later and see how your battery, cpu, and device usage were affected over a period of time.
Honestly though, for non-rooted, you're not doing too bad on battery. If you want better, you're probably going to want to root, which will allow you to use custom ROMs and kernels that allow overclocking and underclocking. And also allow you to remove bloatware.
Regardless if your rooted or not, make sure you go into all of the stock apps, like talk, stocks, news, etc, and set them up to never login and never sync. Then install the network app from the market and make sure that you're set to cdma auto prl. this should help.
And note what SilverZero mentioned - CURRENTLY THERE IS NO WAY TO ROOT AFTER THE 2.2 OTA UPGRADE. This really can't be stressed enough. So if you do decide to go through with the OTA, your options will be very limited for any tweaking.
Average apps that run on everyones phone. those apps are running on mine as we speak and I am still getting good battery life. I have been off the charger since 7a.m. and I am at 78% phone calls and text with wifi and 3g running all day. try that link I posted
This may sound like a real stupid noob question but if I root my phone do I have to flash a ROM? Or will the stock ROM (2.1) still be there?

stock rom will be there - you have the option to flash a rom once rooted, but if you want, you can just stop once rooted - some people root just to be able to run titanium backup.

Get a task killer app and set it to always kill maps, and set a schedule for pruning (like every 30 mins). It's not supposed to start by itself. If you haven't rooted/flashed a custom ROM on it, call HTC. If you have, unroot and go back to stock for a day and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, it's the ROM's fault.

Don't think it touches software version, but it might. I suggest you backup either with MyBackup (30 day free trial) or TitaniumBackup first.
i have the same issue, everytime i check my task manager i see apps like maps launched even though i never use them, sucks more battery for no reason, i hope froyo sheds some light
Please check one of the many battery/task manager threads. Cached applications don't use anything if they aren't somehow active. Also you could have lots of applications open at startup which must initialize something or cache themselves.
I also have maps and many other launched at startup, and my battery life is more than good.
well its claimed that they dont use any ressources.... but the reality is that something like maps eat 10% of my battery in the course of a day even if i dont use it...
if i regularely kill off unused tasks I have plenty of battery for a whole day including wifi
but if I dont Im down to the wire..
apps like maps, gallery etc. alll runs on bootup, and maps at least restarts every ... minutes..

OP, could you check you don't have Latitude enabled in your Maps app? I found this too and it was because I set Maps to report my location. If it's not thats a good start. Now go to your settings and select Location. If you want turn off the use of wireless for location acquiring.
Ensure you're not using any widgets that need mapping data, or the Maps live wallpaper (that's a REAL juice hog)
You'll find a service running called FriendsAppWidget or such. Not sure what it does, but it's the only Map service I know that runs as long as the phone is on. You can kill it if you want, but I'm getting about 16 hrs use with it running all this time and no task killers.

From some searching is seems quite a few 3rd party apps plug into this service. Foursquare, Buzz, Twitter etc... Also , run maps and turn off any location aware features you may have enabled in the Labs section.
Basically seek out any apps you use that are dependant on getting your location to work. Even your weather widget might be the culprit.
Menu > Add > Shortcuts > Settings > Battery Use. Charge it to full, use it til it's running out of battery, then open Battery Use and tell us if there are any apps that you didn't open once (like maps) that use, say, 10% of your battery.
Sounds to me like they're just background services (which consume 0 resources)

Are you using Foursquare/Facebook/Twitter/geotagging photos & snapping a lot of them/etc? All of those use Maps, to a certain extent. If not, and you're on a stock ROM, call HTC and *****.
I do use geotagging and some facebook, but that ... in my opinion does not excuse maps not quitting after its done what it has to do...

We haven't built it in. I'm sure we have it in the source though. once the builds start getting more stable i'll start adding those in. For now we just fixing bugs.

I have been watching the Android development for the Fuze with quite some interest for a while now, and it has made leaps and bounds over the past several months to the point where I decided to try it out.
It successfully booted into Android; however, I have data access to my phone disabled. This seems to cause the Google accounts set up to fail and causes some sort of infinite loop where it keeps asking to set up my account
Is there A) any way to bypass the Google Account set up and set it up later or B) jump on a wireless network (or alternatively jump to shell)?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Hi, i've been using xandroid since last month and everything is running OK except the battery is draining and charging quickly (1-2 hours) which is pretty unusual for normal usage or charging.
What I've noticed that this can also happened even in sleep mode. Did there is any way to preserve battery power? Usually it can stand up to 8 hour on WM6.5 (gps, data connection on).
I am using HTC Touch Pro (RAPHAEL).
Anyway it was the greatest effort you have put to make this device running Android

It is truly a problem when you only get a couple of hours of usage and even on sleep mode. There must be something you're using that keeping the device awake. To test what happening you can use adb logcat and it will let you know which process is kept on running or you can start a new build and test every app individually. Its a lengthly process but in the end if will help you and allow you to achieve greater battery life in the long run.
remap hard keys? my hard keys on the front bottom of the phone don't seem to work other than directional. Is there a way to make them work for back and menu? or remap some keyboard key to back and menu?
i changed the wall paper and then got into the endless xdaandroind logo boot screen. WTF ???? lost everything because of a wall paper from the ROM gallery which suppose to be ok.

hi guys ive a htc touch pro and im using the latest energy rom on it but having problems in loading/booting android on it , whenever i open haret.exe via browser it just hangs and nothing happens , ive tried the same with other roms like tael rom and default rom and it runs on both of them so any idea how to fix this issue ?? thanx in advance

ROM has no effect on Android, that we've found.
Sounds like you didn't copy the startup.txt... Did you follow all the directions?

Yep there are definitely some stability issues and will create an infinite loop. Until we get the builds more stable these issues will be present

First of all which device are you using and type?
This sounds like a very strange behavior and making a layout like this would be kind of useless. Does those buttons work in winmo?

ok guys weird problem. not sure if anyone else has it.
i use mail.yahoo.com at work. it has the chat feature. i use it to send text and msg's while at my desk.
i've noticed that since i've started using froyo, whenever my phone boots up or comes out of deepsleep, i get signed out of my yahoo chat with a message that i've been signed in somewhere else.
now i have no messenger on my device. i have yahoo mail through the stock android email app along with my gmail and exchange mail. i also have a yahoo news widget.
i have had my g/f send me a message after i am kicked out. on her messenger it lists me as mobile. i have never received a message from her on my device.
any ideas on this?
Ok, Let me first say, This website and the people on it have helped me and others so many times. It's a great website with many talented people. However, I know nobody has to help anyone on here, but please listen to this and only help or post something if you have a fix or are having the same problem.
I don't want to sound rude, but I made a thread a while ago and got 9 pages of people saying that "my battery is fine" or people telling me stuff I already know, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE only post if you can help fix the problem or are in the same boat so we can try and get a fix.
Please don't put in the thread " My battery is fine" or "Do a hard reset" even though it seems that is the only way to fix it, I am going to reinstall all of my apps, and its most likely going to happen again.
Background information
I am rooted and running CM6, but have had this problem with the stock ROM, and many other ROMS, doing a hard reset has not helped me in the past, because after restoring my apps, and settings it seems to come back again. I am going to give you as much information as possible to help me with my battery, because I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.
My device
I am rooted and running CM6 and I absolutely love it, it is hands down the best ROM I have used, but I took my phone off the charger, send one text message, loaded up 3 web pages, and refreshed my email, and the battery percentage was down to 93% in 4 minutes of use my battery went down 7%!!!!!!!
I have had this battery drain issue with CM6, Fresh ROM, stock (rooted) rom, and Non-Rooted Stock.
Homescreen
Currently I am using LauncherPro, but ADW.launcher comes with the ROM, and I have had the same problem with that. Here is my setup to show that I am not using any data intensive widgets.
Home screen: besides all of my app icons, I am going to list all of my widgets.
1. Digital Clock Widget-It is a widget that works without an application, but their is an optional application that I don't have installed.

P.S. My battery was at 93% at the beggining of this post, and the screen was on for about 6 minutes total so I can list all of the apps and settings and its npw at 85%
install setcpu,underclock the processor, have it @ 245mhz when screen is off
make sure you are signed out of google talk and go in to settings to uncheck auto sign in since doing that its taking a load off my battery .
also underclocking when screen is off helps alot use wifi when you can or just turn off the data to save loads of battery juice
also are you running the RC1 or a nightly ?
newest nightly is doing very well on the battery hit 19 hours so far with 18% juice left
Your time without signal is 40%, so you are going to get the battery drained.
TWS is your problem and that will not change on any rom.
Now, your PRI is going to be locked in because you are rooted. So maybe a new PRI (no way to update now that you are rooted we are stuck) could possibly help with TWS.
Another thing I know I mentioned in the other post. Do a fresh install and don't install any apps. Just use the phone. If that makes a difference, than it is an app causing your problem.
Eliminate all possibilities until you have a solution.

kill the data when your in a building or areas that will make the data work harder
ALSO is any of the apps your running from a 2.1 backup ? if so that could be it too i had major battery troubles with my 2.1 back ups on 2.2
Go to running processes under settings>applications, see how many are running...if you have more than 5 running processes at a time.
.your battery will suffer. Use startup auditor to prevent apps processes not in use from starting on boot
you may want to check that your default PRL is set for cdma and not gsm.
there is a post in the dev forum about it.
you will need your MSL number, get it from sprint customer service or use cdma workshop trial. I've used both, I recommend calling sprint its fast and free.

The PRL shouldn't be an issue with the Evo. That was some type of hero 1.6 bug.
Also, I don't think the data codes work with Froyo.
You can try to download the "Network" app from the market and see if that works.

I think I have it fixed now though. First up. Did you wipe everything in between ROMS? I know this is redundant. But it is important, many custom ROMS have several cache, memory writing and reading tweaks applied and if the phone needs a fresh start from every angle to really utilize it all.
Honestly, the "drops to 93% without barely doing anything!!" Sounds perfect in line. As soon as the phone is done charging it will start using the battery again UNTIL it drops to 90% and then it will charge it up again. All the while saying "fully charged" I've read that on several threads. And after the initial 10% it should stabilize. If it doesn't after that, then there is a problem. You said you where 40% without signal? That seems high.
There is a thread about how these, and most other Android based phones on CDMA mobile providers have a bug that default to GSM searching, so while its looking for a signal. Its primarily looking for a GSM tower, and secondarily a CDMA. In the phone dialer, type *#*#4323#*#* (I think, please correct be someone if this isn't it) in there, scroll down and you'll see a drop down menu and it will say CDMA (auto) which is the bug. Press menu, then press "Select Radio Band" it'll FC which is normal. Noe look at the drop down menu. It will say GSM (auto). Change this back to CDMA (auto) and exit.
I know by doing this when I first got my phone that my battery life, while the phone is asleep, where way better!!
UPDATE: ignore most of that, sorry. Forgot you said you where on CM6 which is froyo, you'll need to use CDMA workshop to fix that as the code no longer works.
Hope that at least helped you out. I know the pain of fast battery drainage recently. Right now, after moderate usage and 4hrs off the charger I'm at 75%. that is with 4G on with weak signal. Some texting, and web surfing. And Taptalk this whole post. Lol.

All that previous advice about data usage, tws, or anything related to battery drain while the phone is idle with the screen off is bologna.
Lower the brightness of the screen by about one half of automatic brightness and underclock the cpu to about 245-507.
The phone will still be very usable, while the battery drain while actively using the phone should about half.

Thanks everyone so much, I will try all of these things.
By "kill the data" What do you mean?
When I was using a ROM with Sense installed their was a setting called enable always on mobile data, which basically allowed you to turn 3G and 2G off, when the phone was not on, however I can't find anything like that with this ROM.
So if you could elaborate on how to kill the data apps, that would be great, it sounds like that might be it.
And no when I first flashed CM6 it was the first 2.2 ROM, so I got all of my apps from the market, I didn't restore them from 2.1
And to the person asking if I am running the nightly or RC1, haha I don't know the difference.
I cleared all of my data, and was running a rooted stock rom, then flashed the CM6 "latest ROM" from the ROM page on 7-28, then on 8-7 their was a nightly that was 8-08 and I installed that. The mod version I have in settings is NIGHTLY-N1

When I typed in *#*#4323#*#* in the dialer, after pushing the last * the (*#*#4323#*#*) that I had just put in would disappear and not take me to the menu, although I do know what your talking about. Can someone confirm if this is the correct code?

when I did that and go to Phone info, and scroll down to set preferred network type it was on CDMA auto (PRL)
However under the IMEI, phone number, current network, is says network type CDMA EvDo rev. A
and 2 lines above that says GSM service: In service
Than on the bottom is says GSM Disconnects: ======DATA======
state: DcActice State connected at 3:11 AM and elapsed 14:12:24 and then is gives me an address, gateway, and DNS code.
This may sounds stupid, but should that be changed to CDMA only, maybe the PRL auto setting is still looking for a GSM network, because it says GSM: in service.
Thats proly not it, just wondering?

it sounds like these 3 don't even need to be running, I can go without the digital clock widget, who know, maybe thats trying to update or somethin, astro is a file manager, Ill switch to another file manager, and voicemail
THATS from the 2.1 ROM !! maybe thats what it is, Because even though I don't have a voicemail every hour I will get a notification saying new voicemail dial *86 and when I would do that It says virgin mobile or somethin and doesn't let me listen.
I am gonna delete astro, digital clock, and the 2.1 voicemail, and reinstall the 2.2 sprint voicemail.apk and report back.

I haven't used my S3 in a while since I got my Nexus 5 but never got around to selling it. I was thinking of giving it to my mom instead, who's never used a smartphone but expressed some interest in getting one.
I had unrooted and flashed a stock Rogers 4.3 in anticipation of selling it.
Last week my Nexus 5 died and while waiting for my replacement I was using the S3 again as a backup. Since I only needed it for a few days I didn't do any rooting or customization and lived with the stock experience.
However, I found there was serious battery drain. Much more than I recall when I was using it prior to 4.3 (which came out around the time I switched phones). Based on betterbatterystats it looked like this was being caused by a wakelock related to google network services. I see the same wakelock on my Nexus 5 but it doesn't seem to cause any drain while sleeping while on the S3 it's probably losing 20% per hour while sleeping which is a major issue. Is this a known issue with Samsung's 4.3?
So I want to give her the phone in a state that is as maintenance free as possible. I planned to just keep it stock but the battery drain is going to make this phone useless for her and any kind of apps/utilities to tweak battery usage is not going to be a tenable solution with the phone in her hands. She's going to have her hands full just learning the basics.
Is there any way to fix the stock ROM to fix this battery drain issue? If not, is there a custom ROM that does not exhibit this problem but is fully stable and usable by a non-technical user? My experience with custom ROMS has been they all seemed to have various bugs or issues, probably related to incomplete driver support. That's one of the reasons I wanted to get a Nexus. But I haven't followed S3 development since so any suggestions on stable ROMS that don't need any tweaking would be appreciated.

On the stock side, you could start with a non root debloating effort.
Two basic principles are:
Eliminating 2x & 3x built in apps & services like email client, music store, contacts sync, social networking updater, weather widget etc. That is to say pick from the Samsung, Google or AT&T (or no) version and "Turn Off" the others in Application Manager, as able. Obviously root & say, App Quarantine would give greater reach there.
Secondly, reducing unneeded background activities like synching in selected apps' (like Gmail or Skype) settings menu and, if sufficient wifi uptime is available, "Restricting background data" per app; below the pie chart (in Settings/Data usage, after scrolling downward from the bar chart to click on individual apps.) This will limit top background data hogs from overusing cellular data connection activity (with its battery impact) & restrict them to the wifi connection. This works (non destructively wherever real time data can wait for wifi).
My rooted, modded stock 4.3 may be a little less restrictive than yours, but these procedures can make a pure stock flash tamer while considering root options.

You need to unlock/s-off to get 100% downgrade, or, you can unlock bootloader, flash twrp, and install a kittkatt custom rom.

It's not a case of following some steps. What you want is very technical and not for someone with no prior knowledge of rooting Android phones.
What don't you like about lollipop? It's no different, visually, to Kit Kat on the M8

Sounds like you update by OTA. In which case, updating by OTA and keeping user data is often the root of random issues. Try backing up any important personal data and doing a factory reset (to wipe user data - and NO this will not return you to a former OS version as some folks mistakenly believe). Lollipop isn't slower than KitKat in any significant way that I've noticed. You're probably seeing bugs due to conflicts with pre-existing user data (settings and apps).
Battery consumption may be due to the new radio. But it might also be a bug caused by pre-existing data, or you may just need to do a full charge-discharge cycle to properly calibrate the battery meter (mandatory after a major OS update).
Also, OTAs contain important security updates. So it should be considered that you won't have these if you "downgrade".
Something to consider - do you use Facebook Messenger? Turns out since the new Google Play services it's been eating battery like no one's business! Read the reviews on the Play Store for proof but it does seem to be linked to Lollipop and (for me) Google Play services 6.7.74
There's bugs even in OTA updates from 4.4.4 seems most if not all manufacturers having problems and they can really screw your handset up - apps consuming battery (not just Play Store) bad mobile internet, losing Wi-Fi , corrupting system, removing apps, deleting SDCard data.
Probably due to crap OTA "patched" system updates. Myself, once handset is back from warranty repair (12 days use, 4 of which OTA stuffed it up) I'll not use OTA again that's for sure.

Since I've removed Facebook Messenger my phone is back to normal, battery life as it was on 4.4.4 and everything is OK so I'm happy (don't use FB Messenger enough to warrant having it!)

So I'm not alone in facing issues with Lollipop
When I update, I was getting terrible battery life so I performed a hard reset from bootloader.
Now almost everything is fine but Google Play Services, more specifically "Mobile radio active" has been eating into the standby time, not like before but still bad, goes on upto 3 hours. "Keep awake" also goes on upto 2 hours.
Any fix or suggestions would be helpful. I don't use Messenger and Facebook, as they were the major battery eaters.
Rather than keeping an eye on pointless stats, how long does your battery actually last? I honestly think people are making up issues. Now, the FB Messenger HAS been eating battery but once I removed that my battery life went back to normal
My battery was better but mobile data was screwed, WiFi only showing my router and no others, never used facebook (so it's not that app alone) blinkfeed consumed 46% of battery use. All on 4.4.4 update so to say people are making a big issue of it, yeah damn right, it was 100% better without the update!

But that's your individual issue between your phone/router/apps/etc. I've had zero issues with Lollipop bar this one with FB Messenger since the new Google Play services so I uninstalled it and now I'm back to running perfectly so clearly the OTA update isn't the issue
Have you done a factory reset to clear out anything left over from 4.4.4? It's always recommended to do so, as annoying as it is, when moving to a new version of Android. I set my phone up from scratch and have no problems with 5.0.1
I have done... Update still goosed it, so maybe you having no problems it's you that's the lucky one! That's why it's back at HTC!
If these patched updates were any good nobody would have issues!

Uninstalling facebook so obviously not stock so the fact you're flashing quite possibly other ROM's negates your lack of problems. Fully stock phone updated worked worse than what I'm using now. Full stop.
There is also the fact I was told by my phone supplier that problems with updates are industry wide since 4.4.4 and if all the update are, are patches, then it's not going to be a quick fix, like it's known there's variations in the handsets with the carriers.

If there were issues they'd pull the update and there'd be more media coverage. I've not flashed anything on my phone, I'm 100% stock and I've not rooted a phone in well over a year. My phone is running the latest Sense build released and have no issues. Now I only use about ten third party apps so it could just be that that means I'm not having issues. Or it could be I close all apps once I've finished with them. I don't know. But I don't think there's anything wrong with what HTC have released
Doesn't explain the problems people are having, my handset was working 100% A-ok the update which I never applied or accepted stuffed it, maybe it's not in the media because it's not affecting, like yourself, people who don't use it as heavily as others, like I said I've been told the industry is having problems with them, maybe the lucky ones less or not affected are low use.

Who told you the industry is having issues, though? I've not heard of Samsung of LG owners having issues, nor those with Nexus devices (well, not huge numbers of people anyway!), so I don't think Lollipop as a whole is the issue at all. Now, I'm not saying people don't have issues, but I think those issues are down to individual setups (apps installed, usage, even the components used in that particular handset). Perhaps I am lucky, but if I am I've been lucky with every phone I've ever owned
thank you all . here is what i did. i did a hard reset and restored my data then installed whatsapp only and now my battery is back to be very good as it was on kitkat and better. i will install every single app one a day to check which one eating the battery. and i will update you with details. and i see much people talking about this issue on other sites and other handsets.thanks
For me battery works good sometimes and then suddenly starts losing charge during standby, so I check and find Mobile Radio Active has been eating away the battery, while this was not the case with 4.4.4. Even with FB and Messenger installed I didn't have any problems but now I do. I uninstalled both so battery is better than what it was with them but still I lose charge mysteriously in standby randomly.
