Please Help my battery, its dying in front of me - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, Let me first say, This website and the people on it have helped me and others so many times. It's a great website with many talented people. However, I know nobody has to help anyone on here, but please listen to this and only help or post something if you have a fix or are having the same problem.
I don't want to sound rude, but I made a thread a while ago and got 9 pages of people saying that "my battery is fine" or people telling me stuff I already know, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE only post if you can help fix the problem or are in the same boat so we can try and get a fix.
Please don't put in the thread " My battery is fine" or "Do a hard reset" even though it seems that is the only way to fix it, I am going to reinstall all of my apps, and its most likely going to happen again.
Background information
I am rooted and running CM6, but have had this problem with the stock ROM, and many other ROMS, doing a hard reset has not helped me in the past, because after restoring my apps, and settings it seems to come back again. I am going to give you as much information as possible to help me with my battery, because I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.
My device
I am rooted and running CM6 and I absolutely love it, it is hands down the best ROM I have used, but I took my phone off the charger, send one text message, loaded up 3 web pages, and refreshed my email, and the battery percentage was down to 93% in 4 minutes of use my battery went down 7%!!!!!!!
I have had this battery drain issue with CM6, Fresh ROM, stock (rooted) rom, and Non-Rooted Stock.
Homescreen
Currently I am using LauncherPro, but ADW.launcher comes with the ROM, and I have had the same problem with that. Here is my setup to show that I am not using any data intensive widgets.
Home screen: besides all of my app icons, I am going to list all of my widgets.
1. Digital Clock Widget-It is a widget that works without an application, but their is an optional application that I don't have installed.
2. Stock android calender widget
3. Stock android 2x2 music widget
4. Beautiful widgets- silent and airplane mode toggle
5. Stock android power control

Please if anyone can help fix this I would greatly appreciate it, It may seem that the only fix is the hard reset, but their has got to be some app, or setting that is keeping my phone on or killing the battery, if anyone has found that one of these apps or settings had killed their battery, please share, and we can fix our problem.
Thanks
P.S. My battery was at 93% at the beggining of this post, and the screen was on for about 6 minutes total so I can list all of the apps and settings and its npw at 85%

install setcpu, underclock the processor, have it @ 245mhz when screen is off

make sure you are signed out of google talk and go in to settings to uncheck auto sign in since doing that its taking a load off my battery .
also underclocking when screen is off helps alot use wifi when you can or just turn off the data to save loads of battery juice
also are you running the RC1 or a nightly ?
newest nightly is doing very well on the battery hit 19 hours so far with 18% juice left

Your time without signal is 40%, so you are going to get the battery drained.
TWS is your problem and that will not change on any rom.
Now, your PRI is going to be locked in because you are rooted. So maybe a new PRI (no way to update now that you are rooted we are stuck) could possibly help with TWS.
Another thing I know I mentioned in the other post. Do a fresh install and don't install any apps. Just use the phone. If that makes a difference, than it is an app causing your problem.
Eliminate all possibilities until you have a solution.

kill the data when your in a building or areas that will make the data work harder
ALSO is any of the apps your running from a 2.1 backup ? if so that could be it too i had major battery troubles with my 2.1 back ups on 2.2

Go to running processes under settings>applications, see how many are running...if you have more than 5 running processes at a time.
.your battery will suffer. Use startup auditor to prevent apps processes not in use from starting on boot

you may want to check that your default PRL is set for cdma and not gsm.
there is a post in the dev forum about it.
you will need your MSL number, get it from sprint customer service or use cdma workshop trial. I've used both, I recommend calling sprint its fast and free.

i have my msl can you link that info please

The PRL shouldn't be an issue with the Evo. That was some type of hero 1.6 bug.
Also, I don't think the data codes work with Froyo.
You can try to download the "Network" app from the market and see if that works.

I was having a battery drain issue ever since 2.2
I think I have it fixed now though. First up. Did you wipe everything in between ROMS? I know this is redundant. But it is important, many custom ROMS have several cache, memory writing and reading tweaks applied and if the phone needs a fresh start from every angle to really utilize it all.
Honestly, the "drops to 93% without barely doing anything!!" Sounds perfect in line. As soon as the phone is done charging it will start using the battery again UNTIL it drops to 90% and then it will charge it up again. All the while saying "fully charged" I've read that on several threads. And after the initial 10% it should stabilize. If it doesn't after that, then there is a problem. You said you where 40% without signal? That seems high.
There is a thread about how these, and most other Android based phones on CDMA mobile providers have a bug that default to GSM searching, so while its looking for a signal. Its primarily looking for a GSM tower, and secondarily a CDMA. In the phone dialer, type *#*#4323#*#* (I think, please correct be someone if this isn't it) in there, scroll down and you'll see a drop down menu and it will say CDMA (auto) which is the bug. Press menu, then press "Select Radio Band" it'll FC which is normal. Noe look at the drop down menu. It will say GSM (auto). Change this back to CDMA (auto) and exit.
I know by doing this when I first got my phone that my battery life, while the phone is asleep, where way better!!
UPDATE: ignore most of that, sorry. Forgot you said you where on CM6 which is froyo, you'll need to use CDMA workshop to fix that as the code no longer works.
Hope that at least helped you out. I know the pain of fast battery drainage recently. Right now, after moderate usage and 4hrs off the charger I'm at 75%. that is with 4G on with weak signal. Some texting, and web surfing. And Taptalk this whole post. Lol.

All that previous advice about data usage, tws, or anything related to battery drain while the phone is idle with the screen off is bologna.
Lower the brightness of the screen by about one half of automatic brightness and underclock the cpu to about 245-507.
The phone will still be very usable, while the battery drain while actively using the phone should about half.

Thanks everyone so much, I will try all of these things.
By "kill the data" What do you mean?
When I was using a ROM with Sense installed their was a setting called enable always on mobile data, which basically allowed you to turn 3G and 2G off, when the phone was not on, however I can't find anything like that with this ROM.
So if you could elaborate on how to kill the data apps, that would be great, it sounds like that might be it.
And no when I first flashed CM6 it was the first 2.2 ROM, so I got all of my apps from the market, I didn't restore them from 2.1
And to the person asking if I am running the nightly or RC1, haha I don't know the difference.
I cleared all of my data, and was running a rooted stock rom, then flashed the CM6 "latest ROM" from the ROM page on 7-28, then on 8-7 their was a nightly that was 8-08 and I installed that. The mod version I have in settings is NIGHTLY-N1

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6780201&postcount=6

When I typed in *#*#4323#*#* in the dialer, after pushing the last * the (*#*#4323#*#*) that I had just put in would disappear and not take me to the menu, although I do know what your talking about. Can someone confirm if this is the correct code?

Edit, thanks to person above me
its Dial *#*#4636#*#*
when I did that and go to Phone info, and scroll down to set preferred network type it was on CDMA auto (PRL)
However under the IMEI, phone number, current network, is says network type CDMA EvDo rev. A
and 2 lines above that says GSM service: In service
Than on the bottom is says GSM Disconnects: ======DATA======
state: DcActice State connected at 3:11 AM and elapsed 14:12:24 and then is gives me an address, gateway, and DNS code.

This may sounds stupid, but should that be changed to CDMA only, maybe the PRL auto setting is still looking for a GSM network, because it says GSM: in service.
Thats proly not it, just wondering?

Android system-VPN service binder
Calenderstorage
google services framework
NEws and weather-genie refresh service

it sounds like these 3 don't even need to be running, I can go without the digital clock widget, who know, maybe thats trying to update or somethin, astro is a file manager, Ill switch to another file manager, and voicemail
THATS from the 2.1 ROM !! maybe thats what it is, Because even though I don't have a voicemail every hour I will get a notification saying new voicemail dial *86 and when I would do that It says virgin mobile or somethin and doesn't let me listen.
I am gonna delete astro, digital clock, and the 2.1 voicemail, and reinstall the 2.2 sprint voicemail.apk and report back.

Get a task killer app and set it to always kill maps, and set a schedule for pruning (like every 30 mins). It's not supposed to start by itself. If you haven't rooted/flashed a custom ROM on it, call HTC. If you have, unroot and go back to stock for a day and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, it's the ROM's fault.
its not rooted, so if I understand you correctly its a bug?

Okay, serious answer. All data on the phone, but not SD card too (on the off chance that something goes wrong, just copy/paste everything on your SD card to your PC, so you can restore)
heh heh
my point being.. I keep the 'backed up' settings and info on the sd? or is it completely blank?
also I need to apply firmware upgrades again?

Don't think it touches software version, but it might. I suggest you backup either with MyBackup (30 day free trial) or TitaniumBackup first.
i have the same issue, everytime i check my task manager i see apps like maps launched even though i never use them, sucks more battery for no reason, i hope froyo sheds some light
Please check one of the many battery/task manager threads. Cached applications don't use anything if they aren't somehow active. Also you could have lots of applications open at startup which must initialize something or cache themselves.
I also have maps and many other launched at startup, and my battery life is more than good.
well its claimed that they dont use any ressources.... but the reality is that something like maps eat 10% of my battery in the course of a day even if i dont use it...
if i regularely kill off unused tasks I have plenty of battery for a whole day including wifi
but if I dont Im down to the wire..
apps like maps, gallery etc. alll runs on bootup, and maps at least restarts every ... minutes..
got a response from HTC:
Dear Mr Jacobsen, Thanks for contacting HTC Support. Regarding your question, the applications will run automatically in the background as you pointed out. And yes, they will affect the longevity of the battery. Phones operating on the android platform or the Windows Mobile platform will need to be recharged on a more regular basis than other mobile phones. “Heavy” users might need to recharge their phone as often as every 24 hours, and this applies to every brand (Nokia, Sony...)out there. That aside, I do share your frustrations regarding the energy applications waste. If you go on to the Marketplace (market) and search for the application task killer, you should find an application enabling you to close down applications you do not need on a regular basis. Yours Sincerely ****** HTC Support

...People could you calm down?
OP, could you check you don't have Latitude enabled in your Maps app? I found this too and it was because I set Maps to report my location. If it's not thats a good start. Now go to your settings and select Location. If you want turn off the use of wireless for location acquiring.
Ensure you're not using any widgets that need mapping data, or the Maps live wallpaper (that's a REAL juice hog)
You'll find a service running called FriendsAppWidget or such. Not sure what it does, but it's the only Map service I know that runs as long as the phone is on. You can kill it if you want, but I'm getting about 16 hrs use with it running all this time and no task killers.
[EDIT]
From some searching is seems quite a few 3rd party apps plug into this service. Foursquare, Buzz, Twitter etc... Also , run maps and turn off any location aware features you may have enabled in the Labs section.
Basically seek out any apps you use that are dependant on getting your location to work. Even your weather widget might be the culprit.
Menu > Add > Shortcuts > Settings > Battery Use. Charge it to full, use it til it's running out of battery, then open Battery Use and tell us if there are any apps that you didn't open once (like maps) that use, say, 10% of your battery.
Sounds to me like they're just background services (which consume 0 resources)
well maps for sure, it seems its the single most powersucking app...
when Im down to orange/red on the battery from full charge its rated at 7-10%

Are you using Foursquare/Facebook/Twitter/geotagging photos & snapping a lot of them/etc? All of those use Maps, to a certain extent. If not, and you're on a stock ROM, call HTC and *****.
I do use geotagging and some facebook, but that ... in my opinion does not excuse maps not quitting after its done what it has to do...

Draining battery ...

Ok, so I got my new EVO last week. I haven't updated to the new 2.2 (Froyo) yet, though I keep getting the popup saying I should do it. I'll get around to it eventually .. lol. Anyway, my question is ... my battery seems to drain rather quickly throughout the day. I'm not necessarily doing anything spectacular, I have gmail and an exchange (outlook) mail account that are synching .. oh, and the weather widget and bluetooth is always on. I do check my facebook account every once in a while but don't keep it running all the time (at least I don't think it is ... I didn't add the widget, rather just the app to my home screen). I am not putzing with my phone all the time but here it is, almost 2:30 and my battery is at 47% since unplugging it from the charger at 6am. Will updating to 2.2 help with my battery issue? How can I see what is draining my battery?
Yea I'm having the same problem ... IDK I got task killer but its not helping

to check your battery there are apps in the market for that... you can also go to menu --- settings-- about phone---battery---battery use. Also try these tips from this website it has worked wonders for me on my stock rooted Evo http://www.techhackz.com/2010/06/how-to-increase-your-htc-evo-4g-battery.html
You're not doing terrible compared to most users, although I'll bet Bluetooth is taking a significant amount of juice. Froyo isn't a magical battery saver, though it is supposedly more efficient. You may be better of rooting and getting an undervolted ROM in combination with some conservative "Screen off" SetCPU profiles.
Three things: First, you can turn off the OTA notification by going into your settings menu - Software Update and turning off the scheduled check. You'll still be able to check manually whenever you want. Second, turning off "always on mobile data" will save a good amount of battery, but you'll lose Gmail push and some other minor things. Third, think long and hard before you accept that 2.2 OTA update. It can't be rooted yet, you can't go back to 2.1, and we still don't know if/when a root method will be found. If you want Froyo and there's a 0.001% chance you might want to root sometime in the future, you're better off rooting NOW and flashing a ROOTED stock OTA update from the Development section.
Just my thoughts.
Ok, so I downloaded System Panel (the free version for now) from the Market and was able to identify some things that were running that I thought were closed. Not sure what, if any, impact that will have ... time will tell. Here's my next question. After going to Settings/Applications/Running services I'm trying to figure out what some of these things are to determine if I need them running:
Mail - MailService (I'm guessing this is my Gmail?)
Mail - EASDirectpush (I'm guessing this is my Exchange (Outlook)?)
Calendar - ObexService (ummm ... is this my synch'd calendar from Outlook?)
Calendar - ConnectivityService (no idea what this is?)
Touch Input - Touch Input (is it as self explanatory as it sounds?)
HTC DM - HtcDmService (no idea what this is?)
HTC IQAgent - AgentService (no idea what this is?)
com.smithmicro.dm - DMServiceApp (no idea what this is?)

Thats not the functionality you want out of systempanel - what you're refferring to here is essentially using it as a task killer, which you shouldn't be using. Those items will just keep restarting - it's more efficient to just leave them in the background where they're not using cpu or battery.
The main functionality of systempanel lies only in the bought version, I'm afraid. What it does is allow you to set it up to monitor your phone - so you can go back to it a day later and see how your battery, cpu, and device usage were affected over a period of time.
Honestly though, for non-rooted, you're not doing too bad on battery. If you want better, you're probably going to want to root, which will allow you to use custom ROMs and kernels that allow overclocking and underclocking. And also allow you to remove bloatware.
Regardless if your rooted or not, make sure you go into all of the stock apps, like talk, stocks, news, etc, and set them up to never login and never sync. Then install the network app from the market and make sure that you're set to cdma auto prl. this should help.
And note what SilverZero mentioned - CURRENTLY THERE IS NO WAY TO ROOT AFTER THE 2.2 OTA UPGRADE. This really can't be stressed enough. So if you do decide to go through with the OTA, your options will be very limited for any tweaking.
Average apps that run on everyones phone. those apps are running on mine as we speak and I am still getting good battery life. I have been off the charger since 7a.m. and I am at 78% phone calls and text with wifi and 3g running all day. try that link I posted
This may sound like a real stupid noob question but if I root my phone do I have to flash a ROM? Or will the stock ROM (2.1) still be there?

stock rom will be there - you have the option to flash a rom once rooted, but if you want, you can just stop once rooted - some people root just to be able to run titanium backup.

Optimizing Desire for travel

Hi, i'm going to backpack South East Asie for 6 months, and i think my Desire can be a powerfull tool to use during my trip, but I want to optimize it for the purpose. And I hope you guys can help me with choosing ROM, apps and settings for this purpose.
Optimizing for backpacking means that I won't "call" "sms" "mms" or use "3g network" much or perhaps not at all. What I will need is good batterylife, and apps that can help me on my trip while working offline or with the occasionally use of wifi.
Thank you for reading this. Any help will be most welcome.
Barebone cm7 or variant. Don't even think of staying with sense
Also compass... Documents to go.. bubble... A flash app, some gps and maps app etc
Sent from my HTC Desire
they really need to work out some way of making data international. data connections are just so essential to a smart phone, but its so difficult and costly.
When I travel abroad I do 2 things:
- turn data off
- switch to 2G only (consumes less power, you don't need 3G since you don't have data enabled)
Makes a HUGE difference in battery life. At home I barely make it to 5PM witout charging, while I'm abroad I could go for at least 3 days on a charge!
Of course, other things impact heavily on battery life (e.g. I assume you will be using GPS and the camera).
I would suggest you have a second SD card with a nandroid backup on it, just in case something goes wrong.
Have a nice and safe trip!
get yourself a second battery and one those little solar panel chargers( ebay) , plus where ever you going to, download maps for the area you going to, incase you get lost.
have a nice trip

Use Google maps 5.7, and download all the maps locally while you are on home network. This will help you a lot.
I would also recommend an app, My Tracks. You can track your route and see it on map as a red line. This requires GPS, but is highly accurate and helpful if you are going to explore unknown areas.
If your phone is rooted, download setcpu from xda thread, it is paid app in market but free for xda members. Then set the governer to powersave, and use minimum frequency setting of 400-500 MHz. This will help you save on battery.
Also, whenever you won't need any wifi, GPS, or mobile network, put your phone in airplane mode. This is the best battery saver.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
alot of ppl would recommend leedroid.
I personally love stock ROMs and i am on the stock rooted ROM. Just turn on airplane mode (if u need not make calls etc) and use setcpu to reduce CPU clock (i usually put to 7xx mhz or 8xx mhz; can go lower). It lasts about 2 day or more.
For normal usage wif 3G etc, i can last a little more than one day
yes, using setcpu is a good idea. The best ROMs for battery saving are some non-sense ROMs, but don't forget display is the biggest battery consumer

Airplane mode normally turns off GPS too but you can force it on. Normaly I would go with a stock rom as there are less chances for something to go wrong. And you don't want that when you are in the middle of the trip. Also try to mess as little as possible with anything (CPU, etc) to keep yourself out of trouble. You can turn pretty much everything off and get 2-3 days of battery but as it's been said before, the display will be your biggest enemy. If you will be using maps or a different GPS software, caching maps is a very good idea, but keep in mind that you will have the screen on for seeing the map. And that takes you in under one day of phone usage.
Think about using a profesional GPS like Garmin which is great for hiking and keeping your phone closed and with you just for safety.
Wow cant believe this thread as I am going to be doing exactly the same next month and was wondering the same questions.
I am currently running InsertCoint Sense2.1/3.0 Rom and this has a Hibernate function which could be awesome for battery life too.
Obviously dont forget things like Google Translate (for when you have WiFi)and some apps to download Wikipedia pages for some of the places you are visiting. Also sign up for Music Beta so you can take all ur music with you and swap it around when you have WiFi.
The new google maps with perfect for downloading maps but remember the cache lasts 30days so if you are staying somewhere longer you will need to find a wifi and download again (cache settings in maps app).

[Q] phone downloading 80+ megs every night

About a week ago my phone started downloading 'something', about 80 megs of something, every night. It must happen in the middle of the night, I've never been awake to witness it happen. When I look at my phone in the morning I have no system messages, nothing indicated in download manager, basically no hint that anything had happened. I would not have noticed had I not been checked my data usage with my provider.
3G Watchdog attributes it to "Downloads / Media Storage / DRM Protected Content Storage / Download Manager". I have no idea what is afoot here. I don't remember much changing in the last week except for the Market update that was pushed out. No ROM changes or anything radical like that.
Look for advice how to isolate this and make it stop.
HTC Desire Z running Gingervillain 1.5
Thanks in advance.
There's nothing like a podcatcher that runs at night? Or maybe updates? Hmm...
Not that I am aware of. And I hoped that 3G Watchdog would tell if that was the case (I only installed it last week, to try and sort out this problem.)
I have my market updates set to manual. I'm not subscribed to any media services as far as I know. And this is the same amount of data every night. Is there any possibility I'm received an OTA Android update or something that my phone doesn't know what to do with?
I tried *#*#4636#*#* but could not figure out how to get any bandwidth usage stats out of it, so for now this is all the detail I have.

If you don't have any podcast apps installed and set up to run, or anything obvious like that) you could always mount your media card on your computer and sort by date to see what's new.

Thanks, good idea. I just did a complete search via USB connection (I assume this only checks the SDCARD and not the phone's internal memory?) and I can't find anything new from the last few days. There were no new media files except for a few photos I had taken, and no large system files or anything I couldn't explain.
It definitely doesn't seem like I'm lost 80 megs of storage every day, I probably would have noticed that (maybe.)

Only thing I can think then is to check your sync settings and make sure all the apps you've installed since this has happened are from trusted sources (a few botnets have shown up in Android recently); that and go through your list of installed apps to see if there's anything there that you didn't install (note: there is a rogue app that is listed as 'System' but doesn't have the default Android system icon out there).
Does the app that caught this distinguish (damn, how do you spell that word?) between something actually being downloaded and just general network traffic? Your device may just be hammering the towers for a better signal or something like that.

Actually, there's a means to do this in Spare Parts
Dial *#*#4636#*#* (or launch Spare Parts if you have it installed)
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
Since this is happening at night, you'll need to reboot before bed and then select "since boot" to see what happened overnight.

I just eyeballed all of my applications and I don't see anything I don't recognize. Nothing called System. A few system-ish things where I don't know what they do, but they all have Android icons.
I did have all untrusted applications selected because I installed the Amazon app store a while ago.
The Watchdog app seems to indicate the downloaded data is happening all at once, it's not cumulative data from the day, I can update it real time and see what's happening. Moreover, nothing has changed with my location or phone usage, and I normally would have 1-2 megs of data usage a day tops.
Tonight I will shut of 3G data when I go to bed and I'll see if it generates any kind of warning overnight. Good thing I have a big data plan...
twelvebit, I ran into the same problem you had as my phone was also downloading 80-90 megs data every night for about three days before I noticed it. I also narrowed it down to Download Manager. Another problem I had with it is that it uses a constant data connection at every phone bootup. I had to manually force stop Download Manager at every bootup so that it'll free up the data connection again. I pretty much went through my phone and SD card and there was no new files of any type. I don't use any podcast apps. I also didn't install any new apps before this started. After a couple of days of trouble shooting, I gave up and just did a complete wipe. The phantom data stopped after I reinstalled a new rom and hasn't pop back up since. I was running CM 6.1. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.
I just turn my data off at night because for some reason my phone would do the same. I even got rid of my weather widgets because I couldn't figure the problem out. For weird reason android does that mystery downloading.

So I left data off overnight, and as soon as I turned it back on this AM it immediately did performed the phantom 77 meg download. There was no indication on the phone anywhere that it was downloading anything, it's only because I looked a my usage stats that I saw it happened.
Guess my next step is to wipe...?

I flashed to the nightly cyanogenmod this AM, and in doing so I guess I lost my stats. I've never really used spare parts before. It doesn't look like "the" download has been attempted since I reflashed, but that's typical since it happens once per night.
Right now my biggest network using item is called "0", the others are dialer and android system. What is 0? When I try and select it, spare parts crashes.
Is there a way to get hard numbers out of spare parts, or just the graphs? (it's showing blue and pink bars for each.)

Not sure what '0' is.
Spare Parts just gives you the bar graph but I did another search and found 'Stats' and 'Onavo' in the Market, both should help you find the problemed app. Again, Spare Parts should show it if you reboot before bed and then check it in the morning and narrowing it down by "since boot".
EDIT: I take that back, hit the bar graph in Spare Parts and it gives you the actual data.

Guys, I'm having the exact same problem and I am puzzled why it's happening. I came across something from the droid forum:
In brief, to quote the poster:
I found a thread on the Cyanogenmod forums that supports the idea that while my oldish CM kernel was effectively blocking an OTA from installing, it wasn't preventing it from repeatedly downloading and attempting install. There is an app to fake the fingerprint so an OTA is not even downloaded since it appears to have already been applied. Just installed it so no confirmation of the fix yet, but I should know in a day or so. I'd pretty much concluded that the issue was an OTA since it was always coming via 3G even when I was at home with Wifi on. If it had been a misbehaving app, it would have originated on the phone and would have used Wifi. An OTA originates from the carrier so always comes via 3G. IMHO.
Any comment?
It's a little too early to declare victory, but last night was the first night on the new ROM and the phone did not do any inexplicable downloading.
If I learn anything else I will post it here for those others who are suffering the same issue.
Get traffic counter. It'll tell you what's using those megabytes. I used almost 1GB on my phone and it was the friend stream app on HTC Sense & Sensation.

[Q] Battery tips after root

So I just unlocked the bootloader and rooted my VZ SGN. My first root! And I have been suffering, like many, from the Android OS bug that is affecting battery life. So I was just wondering, since I now have superuser access and whatnot, what can I do to make my battery life better?
I'm still on stock ROM, 4.0.2, as of now. I will start adding ROMs later on. So for now, what can I do?
thanks in advance

This. If you're into flashing roms and kernels I'd use AOKP with Franco's kernel. It's a great combo.

I use AOKP and Apex kernel. Great match for me
thanks for all the answers. how exactly do i install a kernal? i have rom manager and all, so maybe i can use that app to do it. also, does installing a new kernal mean i have to change the ROM? and if i do install it, will all my data be safe?
and for all those who already replied with recommendations for kernals, what sort of battery life do you get with them? and how good is the signal and performance etc?
sorry for so many questions, but im new to this
Try turning off GPS or freezing maps.

I'd start by not using rom manager.
flash CWM recovery and use that to flash ROMs/Kernels. Theres a great user guide in the development forum.
This is a battery saving list that was actually written for the Bionic, but most of it will apply to the Gnex too. The main caveat is to be careful about doing a Factory Data Reset. If you do one by select it in the Backup & Reset menu in Settings it will wipe everything off of your sdcard. So be sure to backup anything you want to saved to your computer first:
If you are having short battery life here’s a list of things that can help. Just read through the list and select the items that fit with the way you want to use your phone. Not all items will work for everyone and this list was written for the Droid Bionic but should work for your phone too:
- Don't use an automatic task killer--not even the one that comes with the phone. Reboot your phone and look at what's running. If anything that you've installed is running and there's no reason for it, then uninstall it and find an alternative that behaves. Ignore any stock apps that run on boot as I've found them to be more or less benign.
- Weather widgets, live wallpapers, news/social feeds, any app or service that you use that runs--do without it if you can. If you can’t do without it, lengthen it’s refresh time.
- Don't use antivirus
- Set your WIFI sleep policy to never. The default is "turn off when screen turns off". This will cause the wifi to reconnect every time you open the phone. From any Home Screen select Menu/Settings/Wireless & Networks/ and then use the Menu button to see some new options - select Advanced. Then select Wifi Sleep Policy and set it to Never. Home key to return to Home Screen.
- If you have access to wifi, leave it toggled on as it is more efficient than 3G. Wifi consumes less battery power than 3G.
- I leave GPS toggled on too by the way. Apps use it as needed. When I'm done with Maps or an app that uses it, I'm sure to return to the home screen so GPS can stop. Under wireless settings turn on "Google location services" so that an app is able to use network resources to get your location instead of GPS. I have "VZW location services" turned off--don't know why that option is even there. By the way, I increase the speed of voice output > text to speech > speech rate because I like the directions to get spit out faster. That saves a bit of battery. Turning off the display and just listening for directions help. Also, often I just get the directions and then exit back to the home screen: GPS uses so much battery I try to get it over with ASAP.
- When you get a 1) new battery, 2) do a factory reset, or 3) an OS upgrade - run your battery all the way down until the phone shuts off and then charge the battery all the way up. This will calibrate the phone's understanding of the battery's capacity. Do this once every month or two also, but don't do it too often if you can help it.
- I have my battery set to "Performance Mode" and data is on all the time because I am on call 24x7. If you don't mind, try out a more conservative battery profile to save more gobs of energy.
- Set screen brightness to "Automatic"
- Under Accounts, click on any account listed and turn off sync for any items that you're not interested in syncing. For example, Google Books if you don't use it. Don't use Backup Assistant--I prefer syncing my contacts with Google. You don't need both. Also go into your contacts > menu > display options > backup assistant > UNCHECK. Also do contacts > menu > more > settings > contact storage > and select your Google account and "remember this choice"
- Turn on Bluetooth only when you are going to use it.
- Consider turning off voice privacy. This may not be a big deal but it will save some processing (and therefore battery). It may also improve call quality.
-Turn off haptic feedback, animations, and any un-needed sounds in Android settings and in your apps
- Set your screen timeout to as low a time as you can stand (I use 1 minute) and manually turn the screen off when you’ve finished using the phone.
- Turn off in-pocket detection. In-Pocket Detection has been the source of many issues already.
- Keyboard: turn off vibrate on key press and sounds for any keyboards you use
- Use a red or black screen background. On the original Droid screen--not sure about this Bionic screen--red was the most efficient color that could be displayed.
- Camera app: I like keeping location on and flash on auto. Consider turning location off or at least returning to the home screen ASAP when using camera if location for camera is on.
- In stock browser the default home page is Google and it uses your location. This is a bad idea as it can waste your battery for no reason. Make something else your home page and make sure to close any web page that uses your location when you're done viewing it.
- Charge your phone via the wall charger instead of computer USB as it is faster. Also, don't use long USB cords--use regular power extension cords instead. I stick with the charger that came with the phone. Put the phone on charger when you go to bed every night.
- Consider install the Home Replacement app Zeam. It is basic app that uses very few resources and will help with battery power.
- Emails: I don't know what email app you use, but try this. It saves battery power and in some cases emails arrive quicker. This scheme will have you using only the Gmail app on the phone for all email accounts whether they are pop3 accounts or Gmail.
- If you are using Live Wall Papers, stop!

If battery life is still bad: Consider doing a factory reset: These have gotten pretty painless lately by following these simple steps: 1. Make sure Backup and Restore are checked in the Privacy setting. 2. When going through the setup after the reset, turn on wifi as soon as you can (assuming it is available). 3. After you have entered your Gmail account info, you will be presented with a screen that has two check boxes. Basically they are "Do you want Google to backup and restore this phone”. Make sure you check both of those. Your apps will then automatically reinstall (paid and free). Set the phone aside for a minute or two and let the apps download and install. 3. If rooted, use an app such as titanium backup to restore data only to select apps such as Tapatalk and you will not have to re-enter all your login information. I do this for 3-4 apps (Tapatalk, SPB Shell, etc.).
I've been flashing new roms/updates about once per day lately and I can be up and running with all my apps and settings back in place in less than 20 minutes. It's pretty painless now.
thanks for all the responses. i think i might flash AOKP and franco's kernel on my SGN.
I have a couple more questions though.
1. So if i wanna flash those two, i can simply flash the rom and then flash the kernel right after, without have to re-wipe my data or anything like that?
2. does the backup feature in CWM backup app data and homescreens and all? or do i need titanium backup or something? or is it just not possible for me to do?
3. and if an update comes out for either AOKP or the kernel after i have flashed it, do i need to wipe my data again and flash the latest zip file or can i just update over the existing one?
thanks
also, do i install the kernel first or the rom?
