Ok, so I got my new EVO last week. I haven't updated to the new 2.2 (Froyo) yet, though I keep getting the popup saying I should do it. I'll get around to it eventually .. lol. Anyway, my question is ... my battery seems to drain rather quickly throughout the day. I'm not necessarily doing anything spectacular, I have gmail and an exchange (outlook) mail account that are synching .. oh, and the weather widget and bluetooth is always on. I do check my facebook account every once in a while but don't keep it running all the time (at least I don't think it is ... I didn't add the widget, rather just the app to my home screen). I am not putzing with my phone all the time but here it is, almost 2:30 and my battery is at 47% since unplugging it from the charger at 6am. Will updating to 2.2 help with my battery issue? How can I see what is draining my battery?

to check your battery there are apps in the market for that... you can also go to menu --- settings-- about phone---battery---battery use. Also try these tips from this website it has worked wonders for me on my stock rooted Evo http://www.techhackz.com/2010/06/how-to-increase-your-htc-evo-4g-battery.html
You're not doing terrible compared to most users, although I'll bet Bluetooth is taking a significant amount of juice. Froyo isn't a magical battery saver, though it is supposedly more efficient. You may be better of rooting and getting an undervolted ROM in combination with some conservative "Screen off" SetCPU profiles.
Three things: First, you can turn off the OTA notification by going into your settings menu - Software Update and turning off the scheduled check. You'll still be able to check manually whenever you want. Second, turning off "always on mobile data" will save a good amount of battery, but you'll lose Gmail push and some other minor things. Third, think long and hard before you accept that 2.2 OTA update. It can't be rooted yet, you can't go back to 2.1, and we still don't know if/when a root method will be found. If you want Froyo and there's a 0.001% chance you might want to root sometime in the future, you're better off rooting NOW and flashing a ROOTED stock OTA update from the Development section.
Just my thoughts.
Ok, so I downloaded System Panel (the free version for now) from the Market and was able to identify some things that were running that I thought were closed. Not sure what, if any, impact that will have ... time will tell. Here's my next question. After going to Settings/Applications/Running services I'm trying to figure out what some of these things are to determine if I need them running:
Mail - MailService (I'm guessing this is my Gmail?)
Mail - EASDirectpush (I'm guessing this is my Exchange (Outlook)?)

Thats not the functionality you want out of systempanel - what you're refferring to here is essentially using it as a task killer, which you shouldn't be using. Those items will just keep restarting - it's more efficient to just leave them in the background where they're not using cpu or battery.
The main functionality of systempanel lies only in the bought version, I'm afraid. What it does is allow you to set it up to monitor your phone - so you can go back to it a day later and see how your battery, cpu, and device usage were affected over a period of time.
Honestly though, for non-rooted, you're not doing too bad on battery. If you want better, you're probably going to want to root, which will allow you to use custom ROMs and kernels that allow overclocking and underclocking. And also allow you to remove bloatware.
Regardless if your rooted or not, make sure you go into all of the stock apps, like talk, stocks, news, etc, and set them up to never login and never sync. Then install the network app from the market and make sure that you're set to cdma auto prl. this should help.
And note what SilverZero mentioned - CURRENTLY THERE IS NO WAY TO ROOT AFTER THE 2.2 OTA UPGRADE. This really can't be stressed enough. So if you do decide to go through with the OTA, your options will be very limited for any tweaking.
Average apps that run on everyones phone. those apps are running on mine as we speak and I am still getting good battery life. I have been off the charger since 7a.m. and I am at 78% phone calls and text with wifi and 3g running all day. try that link I posted
This may sound like a real stupid noob question but if I root my phone do I have to flash a ROM? Or will the stock ROM (2.1) still be there?

stock rom will be there - you have the option to flash a rom once rooted, but if you want, you can just stop once rooted - some people root just to be able to run titanium backup.

After the Verizon update, my phone is way faster then root. I also decided to completely start over and upgrade my phone. I haven't tried to root the phone yet. Just curious if others have noticed a difference? It could just be that my phone was f&%$ed up since this was the first time ever rooting. Would make a good poll question, slower, same faster?
I felt the difference from 2.1 to 2.2.. Did you upgrade from 2.1?

I've noticed a full wipe makes a HUGE difference in performance or even just clearing out old texts and the Dalvik.

+1 on that, especially the texts when you start getting above 400-500. I remember when I had the Touch Pro 2... after about 200 of them the phone would REALLY slow down..
Every new rom feels fast initially. You really got to have the rom for a solid week or two before you can make an accurate comparison.
Too many variables to pin down why it's now faster. I went from 2.1 to 2.2 then rooted. I've been rooted since incredible was first broken but I am a NEWBIE. I also had issues with my phone such as SD Card would not load when charging. Also random reboots after I rooted that I reported but could never get right. I tried to follow the procedures each time I put the new Rom on, wiping data, rom, cache but could never get things stable. This of course is no scientific evidence but my phone is probably at least double the speed when I had the rooted rom. Anyway I will wait for the new Verizon maintenance patch to be broken and try again. In any case just to get the speed and the SDcard loading all the time makes me happy I'm back before root. I do miss my special font and being able to do a full backup. If I could do a "run as" like in windows just to be able to run certain approved programs I would be happy. No offense to anyone, I know the Rom developers put a lot of work into what they do. I will root again! (lol) So since I am a newbie, may I ask everyone is there something like a "run as" command in this phone form of Linux?

I'm so content with the first leaked stock rom, I can only image redoing all this work because I need a physically different phone for a business solution... At this moment, I can't imagine what that would be. But I may never swap another rom on this phone.. And I may not envy another rom.. Maybe
I've had my AT&T SG3 for a few months now, and I rooted it right away and had a lot of fun "getting to know" Android (former iOS user). I constantly read these forums and found it daunting to decide whether to flash a custom ROM and which one. Finally, I bit the bullet. I did all the things I was supposed to... nandroid backup, titanium backup, clear cache, factory reset, flash, reboot, restore/reinstall individual apps & data.
I use my phone; it's not a toy, and I don't have more than one; so I was a bit nervous about it and took all the precautions. But, let me tell you that the CM10 ROM (cm-10-20120911-EXPERIMENTAL-d2att-M1) I installed blew my mind on what a positive difference it made. The phone is super fast, and various problems I had with the stock ROM (that came with the phone) has mysteriously gone away. I also feel liberated, because I did not realize how many features of the phone and OS were being "turned off" by the carrier and/or device manufacturer so as not to compete with their own apps/features.
I do realize this is still an "alpha" or "experimental" ROM, but I have to say I am extremely pleased so far. Reading about the "known bugs", I was almost expecting to have to flash back to stock. However, I have to say that many of the known bugs have not shown up on my device/carrier.
Here are the list of issues I had to overcome:
- ** The external SD card's file system was corrupted, but was recovered by putting the card in my windows PC and performing a chkdsk /r to repair the filesystem. Once repaired, all files were intact and I back them up to my computer, then formatted the card with GUIFormat from Ridgecrop to FAT32 with default allocation unit size. Something positive that I didn't expect was, when I used Quickformat to reformat from eFAT to FAT32, all the files were still intact. I didn't even have to recopy from the backup on my computer.
- Initially, I could not get the internet connection to work. I was connected to the network, but no internet (over carrier). I spent tons of time messing with the APN settings and trying all sorts of things. In the end, I just restored the default APNs and rebooted. So, once you go through the initial setup of the phone after flashing the ROM, you might just want to reboot once more for good measure!
- Using Titanium Backup, I restored many apps and their data, including SMS, MMS, etc. I made sure to check the option to "Migrate System Data" in hopes of making sure that the SMS/MMS data would convert and work properly from ICS to JB, and it did.
- ** The one important thing that could not be restored was the "accounts" data, so I had to re-setup my accounts and tell it what to sync for each account, default calendars, etc. This was by far the biggest inconvenience; however, I now have it setup to backup account settings to Google. I don't recall if that was available in ICS, but it is in JB; so I'm hoping that will make it much easier next time.
- Another thing was figuring out how to get Google Now assigned to a hardware button... you just go into Settings>System>Hardware keys, and the trick is to assign "voice search" to the "Menu key (long press)". I had seen all kinds of crazy workarounds and suggestions, but it's that simple.
- Once last quirk that I have NOT resolved yet, but the various system apps (Camera specifically) don't seem to save to the external SD card first and I can't find any setting to tell them to "prefer" the external SD card. If anyone knows how to to this in CM10 JB, please let me know. Not a big deal for now, because if the internal SD starts to fill up, I'll just copy to external SD.
I wish all this was documented somewhere because I spent a LOT of time dealing with these really simple quirks. Hindsight is 20/20! So, I thought I'd post to save you from sleepless hours after flashing from ICS to JB. I think "when/if" my carrier makes the the JB OTA update available, I may still stick with the CM10 ROM. I thought I'd miss various AT&T and Samsung apps like S-Voice or AT&T Hotspot, but I don't at all!
Some stock ROM quirks resolved:
- WIFI is faster and more reliable and seems to automatically switch between the two routers in my house based on signal strength!
- Carrier data is faster and signal strength appears to have improved. In the stock ICS, my phone seemed to get confused when switching back and forth from carrier data and wifi data
- The infamous audio crackling/popping/hissing is gone, and I love this Apollo player (very fast and nice UI)
- Everything about the phone is faster!
- The display/resolution seems clearer/crisper
- The auto brightness seems to work a lot better
- Account Sync and "Push" notifications seem to be much more reliable than before (maybe something to do with the WIFI/Carrier switching quirks in stock ICS)
- Can't say enough about AOSP Jelly Bean and how much better it is than Stock AT&T/Samsung ICS w/ TouchWiz
- The only stock app I miss is the Calendar! I think this is pretty "known" that the CM10 Calendar is basic.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Android where you have choices.
Welcome to android. Soon you'll be like others here and will have the files needed to root/install custom rom/install custom kernel before you even buy your phone!
If you miss some of the stock stuff you can always try some of the touchwiz based roms. They won't be like cm10 obviously but they are streamlined with a lot of the carrier/samsung crap removed.

I am still experimenting, but so far it seems that battery life has seen an improvement. However, I must qualify that with the fact that I did not restore EVERY app on the new ROM because many apps were no longer needed. So, any improvement may not be specific to the ROM itself. However, I read a few posts where people were actually having worse battery performance; so I am very pleased that this is not the case with my installation. Sometimes I wonder if the people having sporadic issues that others are not having is more related to HOW they flash and how/if they restore various system data/settings. I pretty much wiped everything and restored very selectively with regard to system settings/data.
@ djkinetic & crash822, thanks for the welcome guys! crash822, with the stock rom I was actually using another launcher because the stock TW was so limiting, you couldn't even increase the icon grid size. The JB launcher (or at least the CM10 version) has that built-in, so it is quite nice. Thanks again for the warm welcome!

I don't mean touchwiz the launcher. Touchwiz is the whole wrapping that samsung puts android into on their phones. It includes the features that the S3 came with like s-voice, some of the camera features, the eye track to keep your screen on.
Keep what I said in mind whenever you see things on these forums you might want to try that are touchwiz only when you're on CM10 which is aosp. The same can be said when you see things that are AOSP only when you're on a touchwiz rom.
I'd also like to point out that it usually takes 3 battery cycles to fully see how your battery is so don't freak out if when you flash a new rom the batter is trash. It might be trash the first day then it is great after that.
I too am loving the M1 CM10 release! Its been surprising how well everything works so far. I do have one question, the Play store says that Google Wallet is not compatible with my phone. I've considered trying to side load it and see if it would work but anyone else have any suggestions for getting this on my phone?

I believe there is a cm10 workaround for google wallet in the development forum. It involves editing your build prop and using a custom wallet application.

Thanks, I will check that out.
I have flashed many Roms over the last year, Jedi Roms, Infamous Roms, Stock, and most recently Rushing's Shadow Rom. I have stuck to only Touchwiz based Roms since I need WiFi Calling to use my cell phone in my apartment.
The one thing I noticed every time I flashed is that the phone would get significantly slower after I rebooted the phone the first time after I installed a bunch of apps. (Not after the first one I do after the phone has resynch'ed contacts and stuff from google) Additionally, after a couple months the phone would get so slow that I would reflash a new Rom (generally, by this time a new version, but if a new version is not available, I usually switch Roms)
The apps I usually download include:
Google - YouTube, Maps
T-Mobile -Visual Voicemail
Media - Pulse, BeyondPod, a music player
Root stuff - Titanium, Rom toolbox, ES file explorer, etc.
Popular apps - Facebook, twitter, ebay, bank of america, etc.
Are any of these apps known to degrade the performance of your phone over time? Is there a way to diagnose which of these apps are running and when?
A second theory I have is that something on my SD card is either corrupt or not getting wiped properly. Then, these corrupt sectors/files cause performance to decrease over time? Has anybody heard of anything like this? Are there any utilities out there to look for corrupt file. Can anyone reccomend a SD cleaning app that might help if this is the case?
A third theory is that these customized Roms aren't as stable as they are thought to be. I don't believe this is the case since the developers on this forum are much smarter than me, and thoroughly test their roms. Additionally, I have seen this happen with Stock rooted also, which also discounts this theory.
Most of this is spit-balling so that people can see my symptoms (if you had similar symptoms, please share troubleshooting steps and resolution) as well as maybe trigger an idea in someone that has an easy fix to my issue. I like this phone a lot and I don't want to buy a new phone just to avoid these issues. I think this phone is still capable of handling the workload of a 2013 smartphone.
Please let me know any tests/logs that would help you help me solve this problem.
I haven't used my S3 in a while since I got my Nexus 5 but never got around to selling it. I was thinking of giving it to my mom instead, who's never used a smartphone but expressed some interest in getting one.
I had unrooted and flashed a stock Rogers 4.3 in anticipation of selling it.
Last week my Nexus 5 died and while waiting for my replacement I was using the S3 again as a backup. Since I only needed it for a few days I didn't do any rooting or customization and lived with the stock experience.
However, I found there was serious battery drain. Much more than I recall when I was using it prior to 4.3 (which came out around the time I switched phones). Based on betterbatterystats it looked like this was being caused by a wakelock related to google network services. I see the same wakelock on my Nexus 5 but it doesn't seem to cause any drain while sleeping while on the S3 it's probably losing 20% per hour while sleeping which is a major issue. Is this a known issue with Samsung's 4.3?
So I want to give her the phone in a state that is as maintenance free as possible. I planned to just keep it stock but the battery drain is going to make this phone useless for her and any kind of apps/utilities to tweak battery usage is not going to be a tenable solution with the phone in her hands. She's going to have her hands full just learning the basics.
Is there any way to fix the stock ROM to fix this battery drain issue? If not, is there a custom ROM that does not exhibit this problem but is fully stable and usable by a non-technical user? My experience with custom ROMS has been they all seemed to have various bugs or issues, probably related to incomplete driver support. That's one of the reasons I wanted to get a Nexus. But I haven't followed S3 development since so any suggestions on stable ROMS that don't need any tweaking would be appreciated.

On the stock side, you could start with a non root debloating effort.
Two basic principles are:
Eliminating 2x & 3x built in apps & services like email client, music store, contacts sync, social networking updater, weather widget etc. That is to say pick from the Samsung, Google or AT&T (or no) version and "Turn Off" the others in Application Manager, as able. Obviously root & say, App Quarantine would give greater reach there.
Secondly, reducing unneeded background activities like synching in selected apps' (like Gmail or Skype) settings menu and, if sufficient wifi uptime is available, "Restricting background data" per app; below the pie chart (in Settings/Data usage, after scrolling downward from the bar chart to click on individual apps.) This will limit top background data hogs from overusing cellular data connection activity (with its battery impact) & restrict them to the wifi connection. This works (non destructively wherever real time data can wait for wifi).
My rooted, modded stock 4.3 may be a little less restrictive than yours, but these procedures can make a pure stock flash tamer while considering root options.
