[Q] Android Hacking fun? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question. I recently discovered Shark for Root, which is the android equivalent of WireShark. It's very cool, but really only a packet sniffer. I'm looking to do some more fun/advanced stuff, like say...DNS spoofing on my wireless tethering network. Anyone know of any good apps for hacking/dns spoofing/arp poisoning/anything like that?
Sidenote: I'm well aware that people might ask this with malicious intentions. I honestly only like to have fun with these things, messing with my friends and such. All the same, I'm curious.

would it be possible to get windows mobile 7 working?

I was wondering if was even possible, i noticed that verizon doesn't even have a windows mobile 7 phone and i'd like to play with it for a bit and yes the whole xbox live thing interests me
Then you will have to wait for verizon to have a WP7 Phone. Even if a rom was somehow ported over and made to work with the Increbile, it would be very limited, and it's already been said that the xbox live function would not be able to work. I don't have the link for it but a quick google search should net you that information.

Bobboman, that would be an interesting concept. I wrote the thread regarding possibly porting over a BBerry 6 styled UI, but no takers and don't even know if it is possible at that.
MIUI gives you an iPhoneish experience and that makes me believe if somebody invested their time in prepping such a ROM resembling WP7 or BBerry 6, it could be accomplished. Again, i'm just speculating here, but I like where your head is at and I too look forward to anything our crazy bad ass Dev's come up with.
it really would, i did like MIUI but at the same time it felt way too much like the Iphone for me to continue using it though my ex girlfriend is using it on her droid OG

I had the same issue. The trick to miui is using the aosp elements theme. No more iPhoney icons.

There is a WP7 theme, if you just want the look. The info is in Android Themes and Apps.

Cooking a ROM that has a similar feel to WP7 and actually porting it (which is what the OP wants) are two entirely different animals. Customizing the appearance of the UI is one thing... actually implementing the functionality that's core to WP7 is an entirely different animal. Since WP7 is not open source, a successful port is extremely problematic at best... even Android to Android ports have their limitations (such as those found in the Desire Z ports).

Thanks for actually trying to explain the difficulty in porting such a ROM instead of bashing me for asking or proposing a similiar idea.

No bashing here. Some rabid purists would say, "If you want the ____ experience, you should buy a ____ phone". Hell, one of the main bennies of our phones is customization.
Like I said though, it would be possible for someone with talent (that I admittantly lack) to come up with a similar UI. But without access to source, porting the functionality that we'd want from WP7 isn't especially probable.
thanks for explaining that najaboy i figured that it was as simple as getting ahold of stock windows mobile 7 giving it the Inc drivers and going from there
i saw that the HD2 is running it so i thought it might be possible to bring it to the inc even with basic functionality if i knew how to even attempt it i would my self
and yea themeing is not something i'm interested in, i do like the stock look of android but windows mobile 7 would be fun to play with i think
and saying if you like it so much why don't you buy it is such a stupid thing to say as 1) verizon doesn't have it and 2) when i upgraded to the incredible windows mobile 7 wasn't even out yet

new fan WP7 ad I made

I'd seen a couple of requests for fan made ads by people disappointed with Microsoft and the carrier's advertising presence, and I've seen some, well, underwhelming, wp7 commercials on TV myself, so I figured I'd try my own since I work in that field.
Check it out-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XE0SNs-erz0
The music and video were all created by myself. Shot with my Canon t2i, 50mm and 85mm lens, and music recorded with Hamer, Gretsch, and Rickenbacker guitars and basses, for those interested.
Well done, mate. Looks and sounds really great.

For a commercial they typically like 30 seconds, but I thought it was great. Sometimes a little longer is needed to really tell a story. Well done.
I would agree you have great video production skills.
but...
too bad your efforts went to a phone that will go no where. And the features you are showcasing are features that have been around forever on the iPhone and Android devices. This is actually the problem with Windows Phones. Their ads are basically only saying that they kind of caught up. Unfortunately, they will never catch up in the number of available apps in the marketplace.
But good job on your vid dude.

It showcases the UI and interaction, which are much different than the other platforms. Who honestly cares about the number of apps still? Many of the "necessary" apps are already there, and many are much higher quality than on the other platforms. So long as more quality apps come along, and the ones you need are there, I think most can do without the other 299,000+ apps on the market. The needed functionality in the OS will come over time just like on the other platforms.

I agree... and I shouldn't have made it sound like number of apps was most important. Because quite honestly, I think that is one of my complaints about the Android.... way too many junk apps are allowed to stay on the market. But... even though some of the WM apps are quality, there are way too many apps that you just can't get yet on WM... and unless they change that real soon, this last attempt for market share will fail.
Thanks- that's a good point; however I wanted to focus on the integration of the UI. I don't use any apps other than what is built in to the default user experience- in other words- this is something that anyone can do with WP7, and you don't need any aftermarket mods (Android) or in-app purchases (ios) to do any of it.

This was tough to even cram into 60 seconds. My first edit was about 2 minutes along and featured a bunch of other actions like going into the pictures hub, getting directions, etc. I think it's still a bit quick as it is.
I think its great man. I think it would be funny to do the exact same video with android or iOS and show the lack of cohesiveness between apps. I just converted from Android and I could not be happier.

Very apt words.
I saw this on wpcentral or something today, VERY well done! Looks pro, and you're right, it showcases what can easily be done with the native UI. Smartphones aren't about the apps, everyone has apps. It's about the UI. Why do you think Android is number 1 now? Cause it has an "interesting" UI. Much better than Apple's rows of boring boxes (although the iPhone is a very high quality device).
The problem I think is people's rightly held mistrust of Microsoft. They occasionally hit homeruns yes, especially lately. But in the long run, they're seen as the company that has software that will fail. This ad demonstrates what was missing from the original ads; the use of the core UI. Great great job.

OP, great ad!!!
Nice ad! A lot of the official MS ads didn't really highlight the uniqueness of WP7 UI and integration capabilities. For example, uploading to Facebook is so straight forward that you don't need to switch to another app. Great work on showing 'real-life' usage. Just one thing, as kieboy said, unless that number is fake (which it doesn't look to be), you might want to edit it out.

For someone who claims to be an expert analyst of the smartphone market, and knows that the phone isn't going anywhere, you've done a great job of missing the entire point of the ad. It wasn't really flaunting unique features, it was showing off the interaction and ease of use.

Yes.
Why would it be cool to hijack someone's Facebook account, which belongs to them and contains all their personal information, conversations, and more? What right does anyone have to dig into a person's private things? It's also illegal in at least some places.
Why would kicking people off wifi be cool? There might be a few legitimate reasons, but for the most part it's only if you want to play tricks on your friends or be a juvenile douchebag to strangers.
Why would denying someone their revenue for their hard work be cool? Decent sites show ads that are relevant to the site and things you are probably interested in. I don't mind that. Apps might show ads I'm not interested in, but I can usually pay for an ad-free version if I want. Either way, each party gets something out of it. It's a trade. Life isn't free (for you nor the creator of whatever you're using).
Still confused?

ah, I understand where you are coming from, but my intent was not to have people stealing private information. I'd like it if everyone became more conscious of their privacy and actually used the HTTPS setting. And what better way than to expose them to the truth that they're not as safe as they think.

I think the idea was that it's not cool to hack someone's account. Being more security concious is definitely cool.
Also, I should clarify that I'm not necessarily against ad blocking (I do it for general web browsing), but when it's something you actually use that has value to you (such as XDA for me), which the creator provides to you for free in exchange for seeing some reasonable ads, I don't think it's cool to deny them the small bit of support they have asked for in return.
Most of these are actually pretty cool. As far as a Facebook hijack I'm not a fan but props to the OP for letting me know how unsecured my and my girlfriends Facebook accounts are. I just showed her how I was easily able to log into Facebook as her. We both just secured our Facebook!

Sounds like there should be a AdFree (Ad Blocker) with a feature that lets you unblock certain websites or apps. Whereas, AdFree does it universally.

Those are some neat things. May not be for everyone, but cool nontheless.
Facebook hijacking and kicking someone off WiFi is not cool. However, I don't see a problem with ad blocking. It's no different than fast-forwarding through commericials on a TV show that you recorded on a DVR. I never click on ads anyway. If that makes me an immoral person, so be it.

[Q] pharmacy drug apps?

I'm considering buying the Nokia Lumia 900 when it's released by AT&T, however I'm in the hospital a lot and I need some good apps for looking up medications...anyone know of any? I don't think Micromedex is supported by WP is it? would it be possible to get support for it? or Epocrates is another good one.
There are lots of meds tracker apps, but doesn't seem to be an app to look up or find specfic names or genaric drugs at the moment.
Being a Pharmacy student, this kinda worried me. That said, there's a couple applications with drug databases, not as great as Micromedix or ePocrates, but there's MPR (free) and Davis's Drug Guide (free-50$ depending if you have an institution license).
as far as I know they have a walgreen's app, which is pretty functional. I believe it even scan your prescription and order.
*edit*
face palm! I realized you guys meant pharmaceutical apps not pharmacy store apps, lol...oh well.
You could always find a way to motivate a developer to make one. *hint hint* (I'm a developer)
In all seriousness though, making an app is relatively easy. It's the data source that would be a problem.
If that problem got solved and there was serious interest, I wouldn't mind making one.

yes there is serious interest in the development of such apps. I think windows is way behind when it comes to med/pharmacy apps, which is restricting a lot of healthcare professionals to switch on over. I bought the Lumia 900, however I was considered getting an iphone (although I dislike them very much) for the sole purpose of having access to such apps.

You'd have to check with your library most likely or IT department since they handle all the licensing to databases. I was thinking the same until I saw MPR. It works alright, there are something's missing, but you can find some separate clinical calculators that work alright. Really hope other companies start supporting WP7 though. One thing I really missed was epocrates and micromedix on windows mobile.

Bluetooth Tethering PLEASE!!!!!

I don't know if this topic has been bandied about on this forum. I've searched quite a bit and I haven't found anything. Is there any reason why MS has not released BT PAN on our stacks? I know the carriers have the ultimate say on methods used for tethering but not even the factory unlocked models have this wonderful feature. Wi-Fi tethering is nice and all, but it drains batteries like nobody's business, and if you're tethering to a tablet now you have two batteries dying a quick death. One of my favorite features of Windows Mobile after version 5 aku 3 was the internet sharing through either USB or BT. The speeds over BT were the same as any Wi-Fi tethering since it is the phone's same 3G signal anyway. Bluetooth tethering consumes a lot less power than Wi-Fi and with the PAN profile we also get the benefit of file transfer. ARGH!!!!! I hate having to carry an old POS WM6.5 device in my bag for the oft times I need to jack up my laptop when I'm out in the field. If anybody with any kind of influence with MS is reading, can you also throw in the MAP profile while you're at it? Please? Pretty please? With sugar......

Dude, come on. It is widely accepted that a BT radio consumes less power than a Wi-Fi radio. No, I don't have the back-up because it is widely accepted as much as anything else. Do you also need proof if someone tells you the speed of light is approximately 186,000 fps? You must also be one of those idiots that want to see Obama's birth certificate. BT PAN is a very useful profile and I'm not the only one who would prefer to have it. Search around other platforms and you'll see for yourself, or do you want me to do the work for you as well? Would you like links or do you prefer pictures so you don't have to actually read.
