Check out my free app in the Marketplace: AppFinder
AppFinder is the fastest way to find apps by name bar none.
Start typing the name of an app or publisher, and the search results are shown instantly.
tap one of the results to go to the marketplace page for the app.
Check it out and let me know what you think
Been using it last couple days, its a big help! Thanks!!!
I'll check it out thanks!
Thank you - it's very fast like the marketplace search should be. Good for quick looking apps if you know the name.
Are there any improvements coming? Like the Top Downloads or anything else?
appfinder feedback
thanks for the feedback - I'm on it
Great app, thanks!
BTW I can't find HTC Hub...

Ok, v1.1 has been submitted to the app marketplace and is ready for testing - should show up in the marketplace as an update within a few days

does this fix the crash where it closed and wouldn't reopen for me (even after soft reset)?
I had to uninstall, reinstall to get it working again.
I don't think so.
Although I think I know the cause. I will have to roll the fix into another update.
I think there is a small window where the downloaded data file can be corrupted if the writing to flash is interrupted. It will be simple to fix. For now, if you hit it, uninstall reinstall is the only option.
nice find. but did you know while in maketplace you can use the search button to find apps as well?

Of course I do
AppFinder is all about making apps discoverable in the fastest way possible.
I think if you're not in the top 20 apps in the marketplace under any one of the categories, then as a developer you're invisible. AppFinder seeks to make it easier to find apps via search, and with the update, via browsing as well.
Update is in the hopper, still waiting for testing to complete...

the annoying thing is that it searches music and video as well. i can't just search for apps alone
locales
Ok, so I just figured out I've only been indexing the en-US locale
I've updated the data to include
{ "en-US", "en-GB", "en-IE", "en-CA", "en-IN", "en-AU", "en-HK", "en-SG", "de-DE", "fr-FR", "fr-BE", "de-AT", "de-CH", "it-IT", "en-NZ", "es-ES", "es-MX" };
this change is effective immediately as it is a data update. Still waiting for the update to make it through the approval process. It seems that the holiday has slowed things down a bit
The update finally arrived
Nice new features and still very fast. But unfortunately, in my case, it wont load after the second app start (even at first start if I switch the section). I always have to deinstall/reinstall again once the app was started.
Maybe you can take a look? Feels like a caching problem or something like that. I'm using a Samsung Omnia 7 in germany - if that helps
Feature wishlist:
1. add a settings screen to edit:
a.) the number of list entries on one page (10, 20, 50) to keep the app fast enough
b.) the section on loading (and maybe you also can set this to no section just for fast look-up app search - I used the app for this before the update)
2. Maybe you can use the OS-typical "left-to-right-scrolling-loading-dots" instead of the big ones?
3. New logo if there is enough time

Private Joker,
Thanks for the feedback.
First - there was a bug that only impacted the German locale! I was trying to save bandwidth by truncating unnecessary leading zeros in the price and this caused an exception when the locale was set to German. I've updated the data to include the leading zeros and this fixes the problem for Germans. You will have to uninstall and reinstall though to get it to work. I am very sorry for the inconvenience, and I really appreciate you taking the time to give me your feedback even though the app was not working for you at all. I hope you will try again given that the data has been fixed.
Regarding your feedback -
I think you are right on the mark for #2 and #3
I don't understand 2b.
regarding 1a.
perf should not be impacted by the number of items that are shown -
Appfinder actually transfers the marketplace data to the device and indexes it locally. I do this because the network is really, really slow. Aside from having artists and albums mixed up with apps in the marketplace search results, I also was tired of waiting for results to load. Scrolling through the apps means waiting.
The delay at the beginning is caused by reading the marketplace data from flash and indexing it in RAM. Occasionally the loading dots will appear after launching (like the first time that you use it) because AppFinder has transfered a new data file and needs to parse it again. Instead of delaying every 10 or so apps in the list, there is one delay at the beginning (which is relatively small). Right now parsing the file takes about 4 seconds.
Perf could be greatly improve if I had access to memory mapped file APIs. Further compressing the data would help as well - The really slowest part is really reading from the flash. I can improve perf when a network update occurs by reading from the flash in the background before blocking - this would drop the update delay from ~4 seconds to ~1 second.
I could also not query as you're typing -- Waiting until the enter button has been pressed would reduce CPU load and any chunkiness - pressing search would just render the apps instantly.
Anyway, really appreciate your positive attitude and willingness to give feedback in light of what must be a frustrating experience. Please give it another try.
Thanks,
Eric

it's an opinion column (if you can call it that) and not much more. the slow and cumbersome behemoth needs a good deal of time to get up to speed. i'd give them credit for the 1.0 release of wp7. sure, there were some really really face-palm points that were missed, and they attempted to lock it down in an even more incredibly stupid way than apple... but it was a major release.
the problem with 1.0 major releases is:
promising the world, then backpedaling
promising really awesome updates, with all that stuff the other guys have been doing for x years
promising not to fragment (everyone fragments, even apple)
comparing a 1.0 to another 1.0 is fun, and makes for flamewars, but it's not really productive. if company A's 1.0 was released 5 years ago, company B should ALREADY KNOW WHAT SUCKS AND WHY from company A's mistakes and shortcomings. M$ has some really really smart people working there, must just be the management that effs it up.
with the exception of the marketplace bug, what did MS need to fix (from a stability standpoint)? You'll see apple's first couple of updates were bug fixes.
I'm not in any hurry, and if you are, you shouldn't have jumped on the bandwagon at launch.
I'm not either. It's just a bit confronting, that's all.

Camera settings not saving for one. Facebook synced contacts still showing up over bluetooth. Ability to disable camera shutter sound. Alarms "disabled" if headphones plugged in. No address bar in IE landscape.
There are plenty more which could be considered actual bugs. I'm not expecting new features to be pushed weekly, but see no reason why bugfixes would not be. Especially very basic ones such as the camera settings not saving - this has been the number one gripe since launch and afaik there has been no official word from MS regarding this (apart from their user-manual changing to make it sound like a "feature" rather than a "bug"), the same goes for Facebook contacts showing up over BT.

I am sure that Microsoft will squash most/all of the bugs in this coming update, which happens to be OTA.

Yeah, and I agree with that - I don't want the address bar showing up constantly. I actually don't want it showing up in portrait mode all the time either.
But this has been done before - there are plenty of good solutions out there for hiding the browser address bar when in landscape.

I think a browser update might enable the option to hide the address bar or make it show up will be available in the upcoming future.
About the article, it looks like Microsoft only needs one update to solve the security of the OS. Microsoft does not need to roll out hundreds of tiny updates a year unless completely necessary.

Oops, disregard, wrong thread.
as the title says, anyone who has upgraded Mango beta 2 to RTM 7720. Have you noticed anything different? Speed, features, stability etc.? lets use this thread to post our experiences (still havent done it yet, but will report once i do)
cheers

thanks for putting up this thread, im looking for some differences as well.
I haven't upgraded yet to the leaked mango, it is tempting, but I`d rather wait for the official rom for my trophy.
from what I heard the 16bit color banding is still present, and no hidden wifi connectivity, and IE9 HTML5 performance is not yet optimized to 50fps due to the generic drivers used by the rom, instead of using the drivers specifically designed to the particular device, and this [maybe] why the 7720 is still in carrier/OEM testing.

By maps do you mean turn by turn navigation? I haven't really tried this in 7712 (btw im back to nodo 7392) all i know is that it can route locations and stuff, but not voice navigation.
Some says TBT is region dependent like Bing LS and Audio.
I dont know im not really seeing what the differnce is either they could have at least let you change alert tones you can set parameters for wifi connections other than that unless im missing it not even seeing what the update was for.
i haven't really seen anything different from beta 2

IE9 now earns 141 points (7712 - 140) in HTML5 Test
By maps i mean i couldnt even find a place here. Now I can
But no turn by turn..
I found the HTC Apps in Marketplace is now working.
only found "not for resale" disapears
Exiting Bing Vision with the back button no longer freezes for a second as it did in 7712. Now there is an animation of the Bing page sliding down.
People Hub is changed. Twitter integration is now completely functional, so is LinkedIn as mentioned. Contacts show up and auto link where able to. Instead of having to go to individual posts on different services, you can now click the post and pivot to see the replies on different services. Phone is faster. Keyboard bug is fixed where it wouldn't automatically capitalize the first word of texts in messaging hub. Lock screen delay is gone on my HD7. Battery calibration seems a little more accurate, at least for me. Before, if you hit the search button in the Phone to search contacts, but backed out, the bottom buttons wouldn't reappear, this is fixed. Bluetooth is more consistent for me, it doesn't drop, it did on the previous build, often. Tiles no longer "bleed" and flicked through lockscreen for me. I know I found more fixes and features, but this is all I remember off the top right now.

also switching orientation has a different effect especially the people tab
i updated to 7720 yesterday and i think the lock screen is a bit different, the time and data shows up like an smooth animation (fade in) effect. i dont know if this was in 7712???
The time and date fade out has been in place since NoDo
I've just noticed it being a little smoother and boot up showing "not for Resale" is gone. It broke my sideloading tho, so I guess that's something
better battery life and increase in overall performace
Did anyone with mango update can confirm if Arabic is now read correctly on IE9? RTL issue

No, it will not. Never ever.
not sure why you would even want it anyway. The metro interface is the main feature of WP7. If you want HTC Sense, get a Android or WM6.5 device.
You will never see it on WP7, the closest you will see is the HTC hub app

I will admit, I wish I could customize the tiles/background of homepage a little bit but, that is the advantage of WP7. Your data when you need it and that is the point of the tiles.
If you want to customize the UI, sell your WP7 device and get yourself an Android device. You'll get Sense and every other cusstomization feature you can dream of.
You will NEVER see HTC Sense on WIndows Phone 7
For Microsoft, the Metro UI is what differentiates them from the competition, they are not going to compromise that and allow alternate UIs any time soon, if you dont like Metro please, please do not buy a WP7 device.

No. It would still be useless. It's basically that right now, and it's useless in it's current state because of the way Background Tasks work on WP7.
They can only download data every 30 minutes, and when your battery is low some may get shut off.
This is why I can drive 20 minutes through 2 cities at times and the HTC Hub never updates the weather. It does that through a background task data download, because PUSH Notifications on WP7 cannot trigger a background data download. It's why EVERYTHING on WP7 has to refresh when you go into a Hub. Ever notice even the WLM/FB Chat Statuses in Messenger Hub refreshes whenever you go into the HUB, even though you've been getting PUSH Notifications for incoming messages?
Email, People, HTC Hubs do the same thing.
It's also why if you use two devices you'll notice WP7 is monumentally slower at showing updates on it's Me Tile than the C2DM/iOS PUSH Notifications that come in on other platforms. It's cause you don't get them until the Background task does it's think and sees the update. Then, and only then, will the phone display the notification. If you have the Facebook application from Microsoft installed, it's easy to notice this, because the Toasts form that app will arrive a long time before the Me tile flips, unless it came in RIGHT before the background task was due to run.
In order to keep the clock running, the background task would have to be always running, so that the tile could stay in sync with the phone's clock. I am not sure Microsoft is going to let a third party app do that - OEM or not - because of how it can affect battery life. Secondly, in order to update the weather speedily, the background task would have to run significantly more often, becuase WP7 cannot update data through PUSH Notifications like Android can with C2DM. Not even Microsoft's HUBs work like that. They're not gonna make an exception just for HTC or Samsung.
That's precicely the reason why Android Web Marketplace initiates app downloads from the web with C2DM, but WP7 utilizes an encoded SMS to do that.
As WP7 matures, I think the capabilities of PUSH Notifications and Live Tiles alike will improve as well. Right now, they'd have to make too many concessions just for one App/Hub, and it isn't worth it.
It's not going to happen, not in the very near future.
P.S. The above reasons are why some of us want a global Notification Cache. Even for Social updates, the Me Tile is largely useless due to its dependence on a background task that only runs every 30 minutes. Using 3rd party apps that support Toast Notifications (which could theoretically be cached on the device) would result in consistently MUCH faster Notification speeds and a cache will allow you to get to and prioritize them better in the event you're away for the phone for the 10 seconds after the Toast came in

I'm not wrong, I timed it buddy. I'm a bit nerdish about these things, as you could see from the messenger discussions. Obviously, you don't have a clue and you're just guessing.
Stop trying to discuss things you have no flipping clue about.
Me tile notifications are slow as hell. The Facebook app is always minutes faster, often SEVERAL minutes faster due to the way Background tasks work on WP7.
Will do a YouTube video in a day or two. It's late, ATM, and I need someone to help test it out that's on my Facebook Friends list. I'll have iOS/Android/WP7 side by side and show you how slow the PUSH notifications are, as well as how ridiculously slow the Me Tile notifications/flips are.
That should settle that.
See you later.
P.S. I'm publishing the video to YouTube ATM to show the broken notifications in the Message Hub.

Nothing, because everyone's needs are different and most of those who have chosen WP7 are not after skins or deep customisation and so will keep on and enjoy using it. If you need to customise your phone, WP7 isnt for you. It just isnt designed for it and beyond changing the background colour between black and white, changing the theme colour and rearranging your tiles you cant do anything else. If you want Sense, more home screens, etc consider another OS. As WP7 is designed allowing OEM's to apply skins completely defeats the purpose.
Dont feel you have to use WP7 if it doesnt suit your needs, just go with what gives you the features you want. Ultimately, that will make your phone experience enjoyable.
I've been with Sprint for almost 9 years now, and before my Evo 4G in 2010 all I had were the old Nextel i95's...so needless to say I'm at a complete loss with WP7. I tinkered and tailored with Android ROM's for years now and have loved a lot about the OS...but I just couldn't pass up this deal for the Lumia 900 on AT&T. I'm beyond satisfied after having set everything up and loving how tightly knit and integrated a lot of the features are. But I still have some questions:
1) Can i screen capture with the stock rom? I don't want to have to unlock this phone (That was one of the reasons I left Android, you needed to unlock to do ANYTHING)
2) Are there any apps beyond the 3 that use a double tile? Is this a setting somewhere that I'm missing on? Kinda like resizing widgets?
3) Are there different themes, beyond the color switching pallete, that can be used with WP7? And while we're at it, is there a different lockscreen or anything else that can be done from it besides unlocking it? (Such as unlocking to text, email, custom app?)
4) What's up with the notifications disappearing after a while before I get a chance to check em? Is there a way to check them besides going to their respective clients to see what I missed?
5) Can you guys point me towards some alternative apps or settings to replace some of the stock feaures?
6) Besides having to login to AT&T all the time, is there a different way to monitor my data usage? A simple app perhaps?
7) Oh and how could I forget....do I have to go all the way to the settings every time to see what the percentage on my battery is? I found a couple threads saying that you have to unlock the phone for this feature but I refuse to believe that something this simple needs a workaround like that.
Thanks in advance guys, loving this OS and looking forward to some of the changes.
1) Unfortunately not. Most screen captures you see on the net are done using the development software.
2) Tiles sizes are determined by the developers. I wish there was a way of making them single or double too.
3) The colours are the only customisation you can do right now without unlocking the device other than changing the lock screen. The lockscreen I like, as it unlocks to the "desktop" when there is no notifications but if you unlock it as a notification happens then it will take you the application required to see the notification.
Also for some awesome lock screens go to the deviantart website.
4) This is my one and only gripe with WP7. Having said that after unlocking the notication is either facebook or twitter (the only ones not shown on the home screen) and both of those show on my "ME" tile. So really if I want to see anything I missed I go to the "ME" tile and slide across to notifications.
5) What stock features do you need help with?
6) Im not on AT&T and my phone provider has an app to do this so I would be contacting AT&T about this.
7) They do not show a % because its not very accurate I think. This is something I at first hated but I don't care that much any more. This is not like my Samsung Galaxy II which wouldn't last a day. I usually get over a days use out of my Lumia so I don't have to look all the time and be worried. When the love heart goes on the battery I know its getting low but still I have HOURS left.
In terms of number 5 I just meant is there an alternate keyboard, browser, gallery, search feature/marketplace etc. Not that I have a problem with any of these (although I do miss haptic feedback on my keyboard) I just wanted to know if there were alternatives.
EDIT: I do have a problem with ONE of those things I mentioned. The marketplace...it seems too cluttered and feels like the phone is always zoomed in with the way everything looks...but that looks like it was done on purpose.
You.can get two off your list with a Developer unlocked device. Think of it this way. Nokia is giving you a $100 credit because of the data issue. Use it to purchase a legitimate Dev key from Microsoft. Can sideload apps, and also develop with it.
1) can do it with homebrew Screen Capturer app.
2) Only Microsoft or OEMs can develop double wide tiles.
3) Need to have an interop unlocked device to add colors, etc. More involved than dev unlocked and not yet available for the L900.
6) The AT&T myAT&T app will give you the info you need. Nokia is also releasing a data tracking app. Coming soon.
7) Homebrew Battery Meter app. Updates a Live Tile every 10 minutes. Pretty accurate. Good history charts.

There are a few other browsers and such but they are all just front ends for the existing apps supplied with the device. There is also a few marketplace apps which you might find better. I use AppTastic every now and then purely as it shows what's on sale. There might be an app which I don't think is worth $5 or $6 after the trial but would happily purchase to support the developers for a few bucks.

Well, there are alot of the things that are different. Can't/Won't say if its better because thats a personal choice. I've grown to love the look and feel now. So has my daughter...but my son hates it. I gave them both 2 weeks to like it or I would buy them their next phone. My daughter converted...my son did not, and did not want new phone. But, with that said, there are some things I miss from Android....not much, but some. I do wish Live Tiles were a touch more customizable. I wish I could have some more color schemes instead of the just the current ones. I'd love to have a Black/White and/or Grey/white combination of colors also.
Otherwise....its a matter of just trying and getting used to it. I think it took my daughter 3 days to get used to the tiles and groupings of the hubs and what they are designed for. Her original list of must haves went away....
Thanks for all the help guys, yea I figured that most of my complaints/issues could only be solved with an unlock phone but I figured I'd ask. I've got another question, do apps auto update or do I need to manually check em every time?
Your marketplace tile will have a number on it showing the number of updates available. So no you never need to go check but you do need to initiate the update manually when you see that there is some waiting for update.
Again thanks guys for getting me started with the phone. Just a few more questions:
1) Is there a way to set a tile to immediately turn on/off either Bluetooth or Wifi? Or am I stuck with the default settings tile?
2) Can I save a setting where I don't have to download my pictures every time I open an email? I used to just pit "Always show pictures" on the Android GMail client.
3) I've looked and looked and still cant find a tile to just show battery. Can someone link me to an official one that I don't have to side load?
4) Is the app Bandwidth the only app for network speed test? Its kinda glitchy for me.
5) Is there a way to get that HTC Hub on this Lumia or is that another thing where I gotta unlock the phone? I really like the look of it.
6) Someone mentioned that you can change the lockscreen, or at the very least the wallpaper, how do you do that?
Thanks.

Dont know if someone mentioned this, but you're in the droid mentality right now. Like Apple, alot of the framework is locked down. Even with sideloads, alot of the framework is not available. HTC Hub is one of those. MS did not want that kind of screen and they don't allow it. WP is based on Live Tiles and they are sticking with it...for now.
You can change the lock screen pic by going to settings and Lock+Wallpaper. You can change the timeing settings and the picture. If you have a picture you want to use, go to your pictures hub and simply long press on the pic, use as wallpaper is an option.
But mostly, do not expect alot of hack/modding on these phones. For the most part, most of Windows phones, were Android phones at 1 time...ie the Samsung focus line. HD7 was the HD2 line which has been successfully ported to Android and WP7. If you want android type functionality in terms of look and feel...probably not gonna get it here. Of course, I could be wrong....but...who knows.

I don't have answers for all of these, but here's a few (and fwiw I agree
with alodar1). But before I begin, not sure if you're aware of the Marketplace online (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/marketplace) - might make searching easier as you're starting out.
1) "Settings Tile" is 1 such app (I don't use these, so I can't recommend which one to install, but I've seen this one recommended... *shrug*) http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/102014a6-156e-4604-8f1a-2a86e4edf191
2 & 3 don't know, sorry
4) TestMyNet works decent: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/a25ec139-fc33-4571-9425-cf031a3312bb
5) No, sorry (I had it and never really used it...)
6) Answered above =)
You may also want to check out 'AppFlow' (http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/578ef361-c265-46b7-b6f4-63cbd7fbefe0) or some similar application recommendation app.

Yea I realize I still kinda am in that mentality. It's just there's so many little things I took for granted that I never realized were there until this happened. I love this platform so far though, I have no major complaints, just small issues with it. But thanks for the tip, yea I know about the HD2 cause the first thing my brother did when he got that a couple years ago was have me put Gingerbread on it lol. I'll stick with what I've got for now tho, this is a ridiculously smooth experience and if I've gotta make some sacrifices, oh well. I still get everything done that I want throughout the day...I just wished some apps were better supported.
