I need to brick my unrooted phone into an unrepairable state! Help! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a broken charger port on my HTC EVO 4G so I put it back to stock ROM and took it back to the store in hopes of having it replaced. However, the charger port being broken is not under warranty so they will not be able to replace it!
Can someone please give me a way to put my phone in a state where I would be able to replace it?
THANKS

If your charger port is broken, and Sprint won't replace your phone, I think that's f'd up... :s

If you have TEP (total equipment protection) Then sprint will repair it free for ya. If you do not have TEP itll cost ya $35. That, my friend, sounds like a better option than bricking your phone and having them still not replace it.

I got mine replaced when the 4G RSA Keys were "lost" (obviously through my own failure to backup before a root process). They replaced in no questions asked. That would be an easier way of "breaking" the phone without making it useless, in the event they still don't take it back.

Well you have hboot to work with. It does seem easier to try another sprint store.

Wtf? They replaced mine for broken charger port with a new phone under warranty. Said it would take two days to get me a new phone but arrived in the mail the next day.
Sounds like you need to go back and not talk to the janitor about your charging port.

I used to take out the battery and put my phones in the microwave for 10 seconds (or until it looked like something was going to start on fire or explode) then slip the batt back in and take it to the store.

If others have been successful with the same problem, I'd try a different Sprint store.

Hilarious...

That actually works? The microwave thing?

That does work, but try 4 second bursts. You dont want to crack the screen or cause dis-colorization.

On the microwave issue, you already have a damaged phone, dont add housefire to your list of problems, just pull the battery during an ruu(broken port. forgot. use the PCIMG.zip file.) update or something, or take it to another Sprint store, my store doesnt even look me twice when I take my rooted bricks for replacements.

this made my heart skip a beat
just the thought of doing something like that.......

why dont you just "lose it" and tell them you lost your phone and they should replace it... if you have the protection plan that covers that. but like the other guys said, just go in and demand a replacement, if the charging port doesn't work, then the phones pretty much useless. so they pretty much have too replace it.

I would just try calling sprint directly or going to another store. If the phone is still under warranty i don't see how they can say not being able to charge the phone is not covered by the warranty.

Voided G2

I had to power off my phone today by removing the battery because the power button would not work today for some reason it would only turn the screen on and off and there was no lock screen...
but when i removed the back battery cover, i noticed in the upper left hand corner right above the battery there is a little black circle, and in it it says "void"... i never noticed this before...
does any one else have this? and does any one know what this is for or why its there?
my phone has never been in water or dropped...
Got it on mine too. My assumption is that it is void if removed, probably a little screw(to take the phone apart) under the void sticker!!!
ya you are ok, just dont remove it
Thats a void sticker... i think if you take the g2 apart it will come off and you would have to but them from ebay or something
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
Oh ok cool thanks guys
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yes, you guys are correct. Right behind the sticker there's a t5 screw which needs to be removed in order to take apart the phone, which will then cause the phone to be "void".
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Hmmm.... So if I bought one from eBay and there's a hole through the VOID sticker, should I be worried?

I did the spring mod and few weeks later I managed to brick my phone. And I just got a replacement from tmobile few days ago.
When I contacted them thru online chat and told them I removed the void sticker by accident they told me that it will not void the warranty, at least for tmobile. I checked it twice. Both of them said no it will not void the warranty.
I am going to put stock spring and send it back to tmobile and hopefully they won't chargeme
tmobile only asks fro physical damage, cracked screen and water damage they say npthing about void stickers.

I guess that would depend on what was done to it (if anything). If everything is working, probably not a big deal. You can always ask the seller if he know why the void sticker was punctured, and what repairs/mods were done on the phone (if any).

I would think if it was refurbished, they would replace the VOID stickers, but I'm not sure about that.
The spring mod involves taking apart the phone and stretching out the springs of the Z-hinge, or replacing the springs with stronger ones, with the intent of making the phone stay in the closed and open positions more securely.
Another possibility (a fix I think some people have done) is replacement of a broken or unresponsive touch screen.
I noticed that too a few days ago, I got my phone brand new, I thought that little void sticked is due to you rooting your phone or something, that way they know if you were messing with the phones security....is that even possible?

Do you not understand that the sticker is put there by the factory when the phone is made? If you try to unscrew the phone to take it apart, you have to rip the sticker, so they know what you did if you try to return it.
Ok I understand that, but does that mean that somebody took my phone apart before I bought it?

Yeah, I'm still not convinced that ms9007 understands that the sticker needs to be ripped or removed to void the warranty. The sticker says VOID because its too small to say "void if removed". The sticker being there doesn't mean its void.
If the phone was purchased brand new from your carrier or HTC, it should be intact. If not, the phone has taken apart at some point, or the sticker somehow accidentally damaged otherwise.
If you bought the phone from a 3rd party source, claiming its brand new, and the VOID sticker is ripped, then they are probably lying to you. The phone was likely taken apart for one reason or another.

How to brick my epic 4G permanently?

Nope, not a typo - I want to brick my Epic 4G to the point where you can't bring it back via Odin. Even a hardware brick would suffice. Or I'd just like to break it purposefully without physical damage.
I know the first thing you're thinking is insurance fraud, but it's far from that. You see, my Epic 4G is already broken. I'm met with freezes on Android 2.2 ROMs, even the official stock unrooted one. The latest official build has been a problem since the day I flashed it. I
tried to take it to Sprint, but all they did was restore it to Android 2.1 and told me to take a hike. This is absolutely unacceptable. Before I go through the Better Business Bureau, I wanted to see if I could just render my phone inoperable beyond repair so they can give me a proper replacement or fix.
Please let me know if there's any way I can do this as I'm really getting sick and tired of all the issues I seem to be having with any 2.2 build.
Bad idea. Just stock it, and go up the chain of repair until someone with a clue gets to it. These bricked devices piling up lately are going to raise somebody's eyebrows.
Yes I agree with ko. Bad idea to brick it. Take it elsewhere. If it is really freezing on stick roms shoe them. Are u sure your not trying to overclock it and your phone can't handle it?

Well i have bricked my phone a dozen of times, but odin ALWAYS fixes it, if you are having problems with the cellphone just go back to the techs at your local sprint store and say that you are still having problems with it, if maybe helps if you have the total equipment plan since but i bet you have it. Just go to the store and say that it still having problems (all of this without being rooted or running a custom rom) and if you cant show them the issue just tell it does it sometime, after all the customer is always right (or thats the way it should be ~.~)

If you can Odin back then it is not really bricked, more like sponged. Bricked is a dead dead phone. No lights, no charge, no download mode. If he has this "soft brick" or "sponged" condition, the techs will more than likely be able to get him back working. Even though Odin'ing back to a fresh stock may fix his problem.
Ya don't brick it on purpose, just return to stock using Odin go into the sprint store and say its freezing and I'm sure they will attempt to fix it or mist likely will swap it out..

Hey watch it. I'm a tech at a 3rd party store and have a reputation better than the president. If you brought it to a Nexgen, Intouch Wireless, or Mobile Wireless Indirect store (or similar) that has a repair center, they SHOULD replace it free of charge as long as you have TEP (otherwise like someone else said it will be $35). Obviously you're still within the first year warranty so they shouldn't hassle you. Unless you're dealing with a retarded tech.

While k0nane's swoosh is quite humorous, I was thinking more along the lines of this:

[Q] Need advice on replacement

Morning all!!
I need your advice on getting my 4G Touch replaced. My wife and I purchased both our E4GT on December of last year and it looks like mine needs repair or replaced. We did not opt for the insurance which is my issue.
My accelerometer is not functioning correctly so it can no longer tell how I'm holding it anymore and rotates any way it feels like. I have disabled screen rotation, but that doesn't help with the camera app. Most of the time it takes pictures sideways or upside down. I know it's not a software issue as I have run multiple roms and even set it back to a factory rom (unrooted) and still does this.
I have a couple of months left on the one year warranty, but I cannot send it in for repair as, like most folks, I need this phone every day and can't go without it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
Take it to a local Sprint repair center if its able to be repaired they usually get it done in several hours and if it needs to be replaced they order a new one and give your phone back until it arrives. They may charge you $39 though
I assume you have tried a sensor calibration?

It's not that I can't, it's just that my wife and I are looking to buy a house right now. My realtor is calling/texting me sometimes 3 or 4 times a day about seeing a home. In this market, you have to be fast to view one or it might go pending before I get a chance to look and make an offer.
My wife has choose not to deal directly with our realtor and that leaves me as the point-of-contact....go figure!!
I have unrooted and odin'd a stock rom and have an appointment at noon today with my local repair center. I will let ya know how that went. I know there is no water damage as I take very good care of my phone, so it shouldn't be an issue with the warranty.

[Q] Serious issues.

Okay, I have no idea what is wrong with this piece of ****. I'll go to where the issues started.
I got a brand new phone with insurance and flashed it over to Slimbean back in May, stayed on the same build with no issues, until about 2 weeks ago, when the issues started. The screen would stay off and I would have to pull the battery. It did this a lot.
Then out of nowhere, after a routine battery pull, it wouldn't come on at all. The blue light would just stay on when I tried to turn the phone on. The only way to get it to boot was to put the charger in then power it on.
I flashed back to EL29 and upgraded to stock GB27. The wakelock thing still happens. It randomly reboots. and now, the blue light of death thing is happening even when I plug the charger or usb in. I can't get it to respond at all. can someone help me? I figured flashing back to stock would help but apparently not...
EDIT: What is weird about the blue light thing is from what I've seen it is supposed to be a brick, but when it was happening before plugging a charger would fix it. Now it doesn't fix it.
edit 2: Just put it back on the charger, took the battery out, took it off the charger, and tried booting. It worked. I still need to know what is wrong so this stops happening, though.

Take it to a sprint store, have them test the issue, if no water damage and within a year of receiving the phone they should switch it out no deductible no hassle.
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
Also, try grabbing a logcat. It's possible there's a conflict with something causing the reboots and SOD. The blue brick light is odd though.

All phones replaced by isurance have a 1 year warranty from the time received through the isurance process. I have had 3 E4GT because of the power button and overheating issue and they will replace it if it's a factory defect. Just cause they replaced it doesn't mean you have to pay a deductible go to your nearest sprint repair center or call sprint and they should transfer you to the isurance department and they'll send you a replacement for your replacement. My last replacement took me 4 days to get here and it was during my power button issue which kept restarting my phone like every 5 minutes, so annoying.

This has happened twice to my phone, and both times, it turned out to be a battery issue. I take it sometimes when you plug charger in the battery charge icon doesn't show, but after popping it out and then back in it will show then boot? This is because your battery isn't completely blown, or even fat, rounded etc... But has a segment of bad cells. I'm sure when this happens your phone gets hot underneath the camera as well. I am dealing with this same issue, and awaiting a replacement battery yet again. Watch the phone discharge carefully. Mine discharges fine until about 80%, then does exactly what you are saying. After the battery pull and such, I get a boot. The battery by that time is around 62%. Works great until about 45%, then completely shuts off. If I boot back up, it says the battery is dead and I have about 3% to work with until I get a charger hooked up. I tried all the same stuff you are saying, and the battery replacement fixed it, for a while at least...
Edit: a side from the battery being crappy, I think I found the reason why it would do what it is doing. Mine did this yet again, even with new battery. Then I felt the spot that was heating up, and noticed it was extremely close to the micro SD card. Removed it and went through a full cycle without issue. Seems there is an issue reading my card, and was causing the phone to power off, and lock up, all the while tearing up my battery... Give it a shot, if you have an sd card in there, if not, I don't have any other suggestions besides take the phone back.

S pen put in backwards....

So this has been posted only once somewhere else, but unfortunately not on XDA. I accidentally put my s pen in my phone backwards and it was stuck. Of course, I frantically pulled it out, but the end is now stuck inside the phone and will not come out.
Anyone have any advice? Would I be able to take it back under a 14 day return or warranty it? This really sucks right now.
So I advise you all not to do what I did.
Okay, so what I suggest is putting super glue on the tip of your s pen and putting it in there. Maybe gorilla glue and use it to fish it out?

From what I read it's not coming out. The design of the locking and the pens design missed this lol.

So I was able to get my pen out but the sensors and locking mechanism is now broken. Pen still works. You must turn off Sale pen detection I believe.

I was specifically warned not to do this by my best buy sales person. I thought, well, let me see if there's resistance before it gets stuck...Nope! Like an idiot, I broke it off in there. The good news is that Samsung will repair it for a cost. I'll let you know how much. Call it an "idiot tax"

This made me laugh.
I put my pen in backwards and had it stuck although I didn't break the end by forcing it out. I tried to exchange it at Best Buy, but was turned down. I called Samsung Support and they created a 2-day shipping label for me to send them the phone. I sent them the phone 8/26 and it is scheduled to arrive in my hands 9/10 which means I will be apart from my phone for 16 days. I was not charged for the repair nor the shipping to and from the repair center.

Thanks for the link. I would never be stupid enough to put it in backwards but just in case I let someone use my device and they do, this is great info.
Yes, I thought I would never be stupid enough to put it in backwards either. But rushing to clear out from one meeting on the way to another one, talking to some folks at the same time, in backwards it went.
My only gripe with Samsung is there is absolutely NO difference in resistance inserting it backwards or forwards, although I'm not sure it would be possible to do that and keep the flush fitting s-pen.
I used the drinking straw method to remove my s-pen, and the internals of the phone are fine. Thank you Internet for saving my device!

I've seen many videos confirming the paper method works to fix this issue. Your post is the first I've heard that the straw method also works. It is the ease in which this mistake can be made that is the design flaw.
4 hour old note 5... at a bar with co-worker. he dares me to put it in backwards. i foolishly did. got stuck. was able to remove it after some force and playing around. works, but phone has no detection of in/out as expected. called ATT and their sending me a replacement. had the rep state on the record the pen was "stuck inside device, and now that it has been removed has broken phone-to-pen sync"
blah :-\

Lol, my story is similar to yours. I first read about the issue and didn't believe it could be that easy to render the spen useless. It was that easy. Customer support came through for me. Not a big issue anymore since there is a known easy way to fix.

Crazy right? I didn't even go THAT far into the device. Our eyes wide in shock and amazement as we tried to process what had just happened. It was just as I was wrapping up the showing off features and screen bit too. Damn, maybe next time lmao. Att got my back though, lucky !
