[Q] Evo using TMo's HSPA+(4G)? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't live in a 4G area and have never been to one, so forgive my ignorance.
Will the Evo be able to use T-Mobile's "4G" network? Or any other carrier's "4G"?
Kind of like a roaming call/data signal. (I know GSM/CDMA, but that's not the point)
Thanks.

No, I don't think so. LTE and HSPA require separate radios, which the Evo doesn't have.

Anyone up for a new project?
I'd give up my Sprint 4g for HSPA, Since sprint hates where I live and won't give us 4G. But TMobile is expanding to my area.
Verizon is supposed to get into the 4G game and use LTE, so when that happens will the evo be able to use theirs?
(Src: Verizon preparing 4G launch for December)

Take a closer look at the first reply. The EVO doesn't have the radios to function on the other carriers. So no it will never happen.

I understand that it does not by default, be could it be ported from a tmo/vzw phone?
Like the verizon prl using verizon's 3g when its roaming?

The evo can use verizon towers through the prl hack because both carriers use cdma. The evo doesn't have the hardware to connect to hspa+/lte. Same reason why the evo won't work on a gsm carrier.

Ahh, ok that answers it.
I thought it might have just been a software difference, didn't know the evo lacked the hardware to pickup HSPA.
Thank you for answering my question.

But Verizon is locked out. soo......
Saw a post earlier about neckface who has a alpha app that may be able to switch you to that network. havent tried it yet. but im' downloading it right now.

Don't take this the wrong way, and it's not that I think you would intentionally try do anything malicious. But could you link to the app's source page please?
"ClickMeStupid.apk" is kind of off putting.
Going to decompile and read into what it does before I install.

[Q] can someone rip their PRL out of their INCREDIBLE phone for me? :-)

I need the latest Verizon PRL so I can roam on Verizon's tower, so if anyone know how to copy it from their phone onto the computer for me would be great. Thanks

why not use the prl posted there?
yes i looked there and used those PRLs for the evo in the evo forums.
Really I don't know why I get 1x on ever prl I use. only difference is some PRLs give me a roaming sign and others dont...i'll search for that PRL you mention in your post, hopefully I havne used that one yet
I have the verizon/alltell hybrid prl if you'd like it.
I made a Verizon / sprint hybrid prl for my brothers evo and it works just like what your trying to do. Make sure to uncheck preferred home network while in cdma workshop or you will get roaming. If you pm me I can send you about ten different ones I had made.

Sorry to jump in but the above post is correct if your Phone's ESN isn't on Verizon's list of active ESNs all you will do is Roam.

Sprint users can hybrid with verizon and verizon users can hybrid with alltel. I had a tech switch me to a hybrid alltel/verizon prl b/c where I live is all old alltel towers and my inc wasn't using them and my service was unusable. I didn't even know what he was talking about then until months later when I started reading here.
Is it possible to make a hybrid for multiple towers 3 or more
Verizon alltel and sprint or is two the Max

Is this because sprint has a roaming arrangement with verizon? Still, very unusual... So a sprint user can flash a hybrid prl on their evo to get it to connect to verizon towers without paying roaming charges? If this is the case, why is this not all over the web? Very odd...
Verizon brought Alltel so giving inc users a hybrid to connect to alltel towers is no biggie but a sprint verizon hybrid prl is very odd. And would it work in reverse? Can i flash a prl which will allow my inc to connect to sprint towers as well just in case they are closer to me?
I'm not sure on the sprint users but when I asked him if I could get on sprint towers as well as alltell b/c sprint is best in an area I drive through, that's what he told me.
I went from 52011 to 52078. I saw higher numbers in other forums... are PRLs based off of location? Which Verizon prl is in the Verizon / Alltel Hybrid ? Any benefits of an Incredible(using Myns Warm TWOPOINTTWO) using a Sprint /Verizon Hybrid?

ya i thought the same actually. but the article specifically mentions not just phones.. tho it may be incorrect info. reading the source link doesnt phrase it the exact way.. and could lean either way.
"Instead, Azzi said that Sprint is focused on its Network Vision project and is deploying multimodal equipment that includes LTE."
not sure how to take that exactly. it wouldnt be the first time a product is designed but never sees a retail shelf. hmmmmm....

Never got 4G on Sprint (HTC Supersonic)

Hello everyone, I hope to check this thread for updates (read: I'm so dumb I don't check for thread updates often *laughs*).
Anyway, as the title says, I never got 4G on my phone, even before rooting it! I obtained this phone, new, around the time Sprint (began) started adding a extra rate for all smartphones (read: all smartphones will be more expensive than "simple" phones on same plan).
I'm wondering how to get 4G on my phone that is running Cyanogenmod. I am well-versed in Linux, so if the adb shell or the bootloader is required to fix, I can follow the steps you provide. Or should I just accuse Sprint for giving me a defective phone those many, many years ago, even though I never got 4G in the first place? (since my phone is rooted atm, I doubt I could win a court case.)
I appreciate any help, even if you do not know how to fix this. (read: asking around or just reading this)

4G and wimax are the same thing if you didn't know.
And OP, if you are on an ICS Rom or a JB Rom, you will not have wimax. For all you know, you might not even have 4G service in range of where you live. I personally have never even connected to a 4G network.

i'm referring to the standard 4G pn Sprint (or whatever 4G was said to be had on "Sprint HTC Evo 4G" by Sprint)

From my understand wimax AND Lte use different radios hence why any of the new lte phones like the GS3 or evo are stuck on 3g network until LTE rolls out in the area you live. Also he stated he couldn't access 4g even before so he would be on a stock gb

And if you never have been able to get 4g then I would have brought the phone back to sprint. All their 4g phones should access it if your in the coverage zone.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
If you have had the phone for more than 6 months, which it sounds like you have, you should un-root it and take it to sprint. If that is you want 4g service. The unrooting process is generally about the same in difficulty as rooting the phone was, so if you figured that out you should be able to get it backto stock. The process is different depending on your HBoot version and how you rooted it in the first place. If you want to get your 4g fixed, post your HBoot version and root method and someone will point the way to unrooting the phone.
(to get the HBoot version, pull the battery, put it back in, hold vol down, and power on the phone. You should get into the bootloader and the HBoot version should be listed there.)
I assumed it was due to not having the 4G plan before that caused my phone to never get 4G with the plans change (read: Sprint changed plan details). I should of thought of turning it in sooner, but I was not 100% smart back then (nor will I ever be *laughs*)

I would bring it into a store and get it tested to see if it works after you unroot, my sprint store doesn't care about root but that might not bevl the case. Then if it really doesn't work I would ***** and tell them to look up your account to show you never used 4g and see if the will give you a comp on your account.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I never noticed any difference in speed the few times I was in California where there was 4g. I live in AZ and with sprint there is no 4g service but we still pay the fee :/
I doubt unrooting it will fully unroot it (I did edit some startup scripts since i've rooted which seemed to have no impact on my data connection (mostly for ext2 mount point on a directory "/mnt/sdcard/sd-ext" which I removed due to delayed sdcard mounting--now I use a script I manually run when I want to ... offtopic sorry >.> ), so idk if a full unroot is possible.
EDIT: *scrolls back on posts* I read that flashing someone else's radio (backed up from their device) can prevent both from using 4G at the same time. tbh, I don't know if I ever did (I hope not)
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using Tapatalk (ex-GetJar version)
*hopes this doesn't count as a double post*
Somehow I'm getting 4G atm... but it is in a place I tried before (many moons ago). Strange indeed.
What I just don't get is why it is now working. Did I really flash someone else's Radio? If so, was someone else with that "4G login credientals" always on when I tried before? If not, was Sprint lying to me on their online map for 3G/4G coverage?
EDIT: I want to leave this open to see if anyone has any idea as to why it was failing. Another strange finding is that it is a 1 of 3 bars 4G signal according to Cyanogenmod's standard indicator. ( +1 for tethering without having to pay over $100 USD total on Sprint)
Sent from my laptop without any glorious Pixel Shader or "real" Virtulization support.
I've never had wimax signal at my house. Or city.
We are listed as 4g service area for "clear" wimax broadband, but they also state that it is currently not being sold here. That tells me the switch hasn't been flipped on it yet.
There is no sprint wimax one city over but they flipped the switch on "clear" broadband wimax and it's FAST.... If I get signal (its very spotty) ... . 7.4mb down. 1.14mb up.
Edit:
I was searching the intarwebz and it looks like anything more than 2 miles from the tower is pushing it for signal.
I also have the understanding that the 10$ smartphone fee is not just for 4g, but more so the nature of the beast. We have always on, always connected/pinging data devices.

A little late to the party. It's called SVDO, which allows devices with CDMA radios to simultaneously use voice and data.
My understanding is that only the S3 and EVO LTE have the radios capable of doing this, whereas the Nexus LTE may not.
Gs3 and the Evo LTE has two radios antennas. One for voice & one for data. So I've heard. Let me know if I'm wrong tho

It's because they don't support SVDO on all towers and during high volumes, data is less prioritized so you may only get voice.

LMAO I wouldn't be surprised. I don't even bother going into their store to ask questions. Only to look at phones and when I'm approached by someone I tell them I'm fine because 99% of what they say is misinformation or flat out ridiculous. Last time I went I overheard one of the guys telling this lady who obviously knew nothing about phones that she should go with the Epic Touch 4G because the Galaxy Nexus "wasn't that good." Really? It was hard holding my tongue at that moment. Anyways sorry to get a little off topic but just had to let it out.

[Q] Can I use another 4G LTE provider?

Can I use another 4G LTE provider on the Galaxy Note II from Sprint?
I have Boost Mobile and I had a Galaxy S2 with Clear.com 4G WiMax. I now can only get 3G, and as you ALL know the 3G speed has lowered quite a bit. (200~400k vs 700~900k 3 years ago)
Another alternative I guess would be to get a Hotspot, but who wants to carry around a phone AND a hotspot when you can have them both on the phone?
I believe you can use this device on any network that is actually using Sprint towers, like MetroPCS (?) or Boost?
There are threads somewhere for instructions on flashing this.
(i'm also talking out my ass, because I have only noticed these threads in passing, never actually researched this. But I bet if you Searched a bit, you'd find the info.)

Thanks for the info but that's not what I meant. I mean the 4G service, not the voice, talk, text and 3G. I have that already. (that's what the thread under this one does, help you program the Note 2 on Boost, I already did that part. I meant the 4G LTE, i.e. connecting it on Verizon's LTE or T-Mobile's (MetroPCS is now part of T-Mobile I believe?) Heck, even a Sprint LTE account if they allowed it by itself with no talk/text service would be nice.

Impossible to do first off you need to understand how technology and radios work Tmobile is GSM. Sprint and verizon are CDMA and you can only "roam" on 3g verizon with a prl that can get you kicked off, if you abuse it.

Ok, so maybe I do need to do some research. LTE is *not* like WiMax? It doesn't have separate "device" from the actual voice/text/3G radio?
LTE uses the same radio as the cellphone and 3G?

Nice, thanks for the info!
You can't use Verizons LTE because the frequency is different. The sprint note 2 doesn't have versions LTE frequency to pick it up.

Ok thanks for the info. Any other carrier with the same frequencies as Sprint? (What frequencies does MetroPCS use?)

right there, see. Metro actually uses Sprint towers (ie, Sprint services) ... So... Same frequency.

I give facts and argument you insult sprint... well of course you are right. who has ever heard of the "can suck it" argument ever loosing. that's how we explained to Hitler and the Japanese emperor that he had to surrender in WW2 "Mr Hitler can suck it" -pres trueman, "since I can suck it I have ordered my forces to surrender and suggested to the Japanese to do the same"-hitler (translated to English)
if you can't give facts to support your claim you can go head and get an iPhone on a gsm network since you are using the same arguments apple uses to ensnare its sheep -i mean- customers
either that or you are an at&t rep or fanboy trying to weakarm customers away from sprint. why you aren't targeting your biggest competitor Verizon is beyond me but take that stuff to T-Mobile customers they'll eat that up like they eat their "unlimited" throttled data
one bad experience in one city with one small period of data speed downturn does not a bad carrier make
oh and mods don't blame chuko (or me) for starting arguments. arguments are healthy and help shape perception

In all fairness, Sprint in Denver does suck... 3g speeds right now. 200 kbps and no lte. There are a few lte towers popping up. but not in the metro area. Person in the cube next to me has AT&T and hspa+ is 15mbps and lte 40mbps. Faster than the cable provider here!

Tmobile has 4G LTE in almost all of New York with some decent coverage in Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia and they're just starting.. So they actually do have real 4G lol
