I read this article at phonearena.com it's short but sweet and it says phones but assuming they are going to lte suggests that they mean ALL wimax devices.

tho if anyones actually interested in the info...

we all knew there'd be no more wimax phones... but sprint had promised an evdo/wimax/lte hotspot this summer which would have been most likely the last wimax device... now it seems that got cut too.

No the Sierra Wireless Tri-Band device is still coming. I think he meant that no more WiMax phones will be released. And the Tri-band hotspot is not WiMax only either, it is 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE

ya i thought the same actually. but the article specifically mentions not just phones.. tho it may be incorrect info. reading the source link doesnt phrase it the exact way.. and could lean either way.
"Instead, Azzi said that Sprint is focused on its Network Vision project and is deploying multimodal equipment that includes LTE."
not sure how to take that exactly. it wouldnt be the first time a product is designed but never sees a retail shelf. hmmmmm....

So are could they be doing tri-bands for the phones or no? In a way it makes sense since 3G is so ass who would want to wait for LTE to come to their town and be on 3G when they could use 4G in the mean time. I do imagine though it would be a big time battery hog...

I don't live in a 4G area and have never been to one, so forgive my ignorance.
Will the Evo be able to use T-Mobile's "4G" network? Or any other carrier's "4G"?
Kind of like a roaming call/data signal. (I know GSM/CDMA, but that's not the point)
Thanks.
No, I don't think so. LTE and HSPA require separate radios, which the Evo doesn't have.

Anyone up for a new project?
I'd give up my Sprint 4g for HSPA, Since sprint hates where I live and won't give us 4G. But TMobile is expanding to my area.
Verizon is supposed to get into the 4G game and use LTE, so when that happens will the evo be able to use theirs?
(Src: Verizon preparing 4G launch for December)
Take a closer look at the first reply. The EVO doesn't have the radios to function on the other carriers. So no it will never happen.

I understand that it does not by default, be could it be ported from a tmo/vzw phone?
Like the verizon prl using verizon's 3g when its roaming?
The evo can use verizon towers through the prl hack because both carriers use cdma. The evo doesn't have the hardware to connect to hspa+/lte. Same reason why the evo won't work on a gsm carrier.

is the GS coming to sprint?
Sent from my SGH-T989
Wait...I wouldn't invest in anything 4G right now even thought the E4GT is a beast. I would rather have something that will get me on Sprints newest network that is LTE!
I do not know why anyone would buy a 4G phone right now or even sign up with Sprint at this time. The only way I would is if Sprint allowed anyone in doing so a 2 year upgrade price to an LTE phone when released and I do not see them doing that.

I dont now, but if sprint does in fact get rid of wimax, and our phones are no longer capable of 4g, then they have to drop the premium data add-on, and that would be a change in contract, then they would have to allow you to terminate contract free of charge, then sign up again and get the nexus, or other lte phone for upgrade price....but I would be willing to bet that you could get an upgrade discount before you would have to terminate.

Well, it still does not look very promising for LS: http://www.pcworld.com/article/249082/sprint_gives_lightsquared_six_more_weeks_for_fcc_approval.html
There is another article that indicates that Sprint basically 'forgave' LS deadlines, likely because LS's issue is more relevant to the FCC than to LS itself. Until they get the approval they need from the FCC there won't be LTE for sprint users.
Screw the GNex. I love the phone, but, I'm an absurdist at heart....I'm going to wait for the Galaxy Note. I love my ET4G, but, I'd love it to be absurdly large and perhaps a little faster.
4G? Who cares, I barely find a signal now and even if it was LTE I'd barely get a signal for another year or two...
Get what you want, write off Sprint 4G for another year or two...unless you are in one of their pet markets and it means that much to you.

Interesting... I didn't know that. My mom has the LG Optimus and my sister has the Samsung Transform and neither of them have the $10 fee. Are those phones not considered smart phones then?
They're included, my brother has the optimus and we had to add the premium data to our account. If they had their phones activated before they did it for all smart phones they will be an exception to the fee.

More realistically if enough ppl complained maybe we can get sprint to give us a free upgrade to an LTE device
By the time LTE actually comes to your area, you'll probably be eligible for an upgrade anyway.
And why would you get a free upgrade? It's not like the WiMAX service is being shut down or anything.
There are theories, but nothing confirmed yet.

I called Sprint when the news that they were ending WiMax came out and they said that if I did not have 4G in my area they would allow me an earlier upgrade to an LTE phone with no penalties.
I had to push them for a while and escalate and bedazzle them with logic, but it worked.
But it was all for nothing since my phone will be put up for sale May 7th.

We as in ACS. We were in touch with a reliable source that I'd prefer not to name the origin of.
A few things...
LTE and WIMAX do require 2 different radios so if you wanted your device to switch between them it would have to have both radios built in.
Wimax is not going away anytime soon because we announced a new hotspot device which houses all of our radios aka "quadband".
Just a question; Why is complaining ever a solution? Technology moves like water. You jump in knowing that there is newer and better just up stream of you. Retail some how gives people a sence of entitlment which baffles me. You buy a car, do you complain the next year and say "well now there is a 2013 modle with x,y,z in it so I should get it for free".... just silly, baby town frolics even.

I kinda agree with what you're saying... I think what people are having an issue with is that they are stuck in contract with a non-lte phone. If you had to pay 5 times for that newer model car than what a new customer would pay, I bet you would be pretty upset too. I just hope my upgrade timing plays out perfectly to when lte is coming to chicago. That would be awesome.
On that meeting they had about network vision they did say about making lte work under Wimax or something like that I may be wrong thoe

A little late to the party. It's called SVDO, which allows devices with CDMA radios to simultaneously use voice and data.
My understanding is that only the S3 and EVO LTE have the radios capable of doing this, whereas the Nexus LTE may not.
Gs3 and the Evo LTE has two radios antennas. One for voice & one for data. So I've heard. Let me know if I'm wrong tho

LMAO I wouldn't be surprised. I don't even bother going into their store to ask questions. Only to look at phones and when I'm approached by someone I tell them I'm fine because 99% of what they say is misinformation or flat out ridiculous. Last time I went I overheard one of the guys telling this lady who obviously knew nothing about phones that she should go with the Epic Touch 4G because the Galaxy Nexus "wasn't that good." Really? It was hard holding my tongue at that moment. Anyways sorry to get a little off topic but just had to let it out.

Sprint just recently announced that the markets that they have been working on have been going ahead of schedule. Also that they have deligated more money and work units to the LTE deployment, along with another company is being dispatched to help move things along. Ever since the SoftBank merger
To the OP yes it is a great site in regards to the sprint coverage they usually have updates posted sometimes days before the other sites have something up about new cities being announced etc.
And after speaking with a Sprint employee who goes to the shows/releases for the products the time that he said our city is scheduled to start is exactly on par with the s4gru website.:good:

At least you're on the deployment list...my entire state isn't anywhere on their list.
First time I'll see LTE is when I move.

Nebraska.
Between Lincoln and Omaha we probably have a total of 2 WiMax towers...allegedly there was WiMax to be had in both, but I never saw it on my EVO4G. And by the time I tradeup my Note2 for Note3 or what have you, I probably still will not have ever seen 4G in state.

For those that have no lte and are not on any list I'd start saving money now. Give Sprint 3-4 months, if still no lte or announcements then I say switch. First check with tmobile in your area. If it's in your area I recommend them. Even at their slowest their hsdpa+ hits at 2-4mbps.
I myself am giving Sprint till June. If by then the lte I'm seeing now doesn't improve I'm moving to tmo. In my town tmo gets around 6mbps and if they ever upgrade to lte here then I'm golden. It's all a matter of waiting now
