Kindle - Windows Phone 7 General

Does anyone know when the Kindle app for WP7 is going to be released? I know it is on its way "soon" but It is the only thing I really miss from my HTC Desire and I am becoming impatient! So, anyone with inside information, please tip us the wink here!!

The press release says "later this year" and there is only what, 5-6 weeks left for it to be this year? I'm willing to bet we may see something announced this week by before black Friday as part of their eBook push or something within the 12 days of Christmas deals amazon usually does.

Thanks, that may make sense - here's hoping!

From Amazon's press release on October 28, they said it will come out "in the coming months". Makes me wonder if the Kindle app won't hit the marketplace until the first (or second) WP7 updates come out.

amazon is blowing it, Missing both the kindle and audible software for wp7. i am really starting to get annoyed with them. you can't make customers wait without something to go on. they could atleast do what blizzard does and say it is coming an exact date and push it back if they arent happy. I wonder if they are waiting for the update from microsoft

What's even more unfortunate is that Amazon has an ongoing TV ad campaign showcasing the Kindle mobile apps touting their buy-once-read-everywhere advantage. They even have two versions of the ad---one for switching from iPhone to Android, and one for the other way around. And WP7 is conspicuously absent.

OK, does anyone on here work for Amazon? They did say that the Kindle App would be coming this year, they now have precisely 2 weeks left to keep that promise. I wish they would either release it or 'fess up to a delay!! I need my ebooks on my HD7!!!!

They just announced a new android version and some of the blogs reported some "coming soon" announcement yesertday but didn't link to anything official from Amazon.
trying to see if i can guess some urls from their other apps to see if i find anything

FYI, the Kindle app is now in the marketplace.

Marketplace

It's not available for me either. I'm in Australia. Hopefully it just takes a few hours to spread to the non-US marketplaces.
I have a Kindle and the Kindle app for Android, so I'd be very annoyed if I had to wait for the Windows Phone version.

found it by typing kindle into marketplace search.
Nice looking app.
Needs settings for font color, size, type and the ability to have black paper with white text.

Hey I got it.
The question - can I buy books there on my Polish credit card or I will encounter the same "not supported country" problem?

It just depends on whether Kindle books are available in Poland or not. You will be able to buy books available in your country, but not books that are only available in other countries.
You should be able to go to Amazon.com and get a sample of any book that is available to your country (assuming your Amazon account is set to your country). If you can successfully get a sample for a book it means that book is available in your country.

Correction: I didn't click on the link from Amazon, I clicked this one from some other website:
follow this link: http://redirect.zune.net/External/LaunchZuneProtocol.aspx?pathuri=navigate?phoneAppID=48195fb4-ee0e-e011-9264-00237de2db9e&source=1800PocketPC
. This worked for me in Australia even though I still can't see the app in the marketplace on the phone or in the Zune software.
If it works it will open the Zune software and go to the app.

That link works for UK market. Thanks!

If they do not change this option soon WP7 will fail. There is a massive market outside the USA.
I still cant believe we have to do this when the phone is sold world wide.

definitely true. the reason why the iPhone succeeds is because it's app store is available around the world with over 70 countries, mine included.
Getting a Windows phone was the best decision i made, until found out i can't buy paid apps off the marketplace, you need a US credit card or something.
This marketing strategy is a potential WP7 killer.
I think the app marketplace is available in most places...at least in their initial target areas. The guy is from the netherlands so I assume he's after a zune pass and for that MS is beholden to the recording industry but I believe they'll have a solution for all their target markets, perhaps not all having the zune pass, but they will all be able to buy the music.

that makes me curious. Iphone has music streaming now, right? Does that work everywhere?
I think some of the problem that microsoft is having is that some countries want more money for the streaming rights than in the USA.
Apple doesn't have streaming like zune pass natively....you can get third party software in the app store I think.
The problem for sure is what the content owners want financially...I was old by an MS rep that in Canada for insance, SOCAN (content industry reps) are wanting a ridiculous amount of money...from what I gather they are not really interested in the rental idea to the point where it would make sense for a consumer to purchase it...
As much as I'd like to blame MS for incompetent negotiating, the music industry is notoriously stupid and short term in their thinking...

Actually no, Zune doesn't work for apps either unless you change the region.
Zune pass does also not work in Germany but that problem is not related to MS or to Zune but to the GEMA. -> http://www.gema.de/en/
Thanks to them wanting astronomical amounts of money, most streaming services etc are not possible in Germany. REALLY annoying

Same issue in Canada...it's called SOCAN here...it gets even crazier here as the artist association who already get a tax on all media want to further charge...just getting out of hand. I can't really complain about the kids these days who will just bypass it all and get it illegally or the many new artists who just bypass these corrupt associations and sell directly to their audience...
Regarding the app marketplace...that is a big FAIL if it's not available in all of Europe...I know Android marketplace only became available in Canada about a year ago but you'd think MS would have that sorted out of the gate...music I understand but the app marketplace seems silly not to have it working...it works in Canada
Well if this is not sorted out by then end of January I for one will not be upgrading to a WP7 phone.
Having no access to the app market is not going to cut it for me.
One easy solution that would solve this problem instantly would be to allow us to pay using Microsoft points, These are available to most I think.
yep MS Points would work a whole lot more. i sent the MS guys some tweets again regarding this

ilomilo

Kindle app not available on WP7.5 in Scandinavia (possibly other countries)

Hi all,
I was in contact today with both Amazon and Microsoft regarding an issue that neither of them had an answer to.. and they were both blaming each other on who had done a mistake, but none of them had an answer for me.
You see, Kindle (which was released on Windows Phone for something that seems like ages ago now), is not available in the Windows Phone marketplace in Scandinavia (and possibly some other markets such as for example Japan and Russia).
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...ARMDJO72UN&newContentNum=84&ref_=cm_cd_pg_pg4
The Kindle app is available here in Norway in for example Android market (Google Play), in iOS (Appstore) and Mac (Appstore)... but not in the Windows Phone 7.5 marketplace. I own a Lumia 800, and I have been wanting to use this app for ages now.. does anyone know why, or can contact the right sources about this issue?
I am posting it here on XDA mostly because it seems no one, not even the company that made the app, and the one supposed to post it, has an answer for me. Therefore you could look at this post at some way of raising awareness, and hopefully someone will discover it and maybe help discover what has gone wrong in the process of publishing this app in the Windows Phone marketplace in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden at least..) and a few other other countries.
Kind Regards
One who wants to be able to fully make the switch from my old Android phone to my now 3 month old Windows Phone.
PS. This is currently the only app I am missing to make my switch complete. Being able to read my books on the Windows Phone will be the last thing I need, currently I have to bring both phones with me at all times to read.. and that sucks.

I can confirm it is available and works in the US.
Yes, I know it is available in the US, and I think it is also available for the UK for example.
The thing that bothers me is of course that the Kindle app is available in the Appstore and on the Google Play market here in Norway, but not in the Windows Phone market. What makes WP so different? I cannot understand why it should not have been released by now.. and the fact that neither Microsoft nor Amazon had an answer for me and was just blaming each other, just tells me that they don't know either and should try to take it higher in the system.
As a customer I am having a hard time being able to get higher in the system, and the customer service should be able to do it for me..

It's not available in Greece either. However, I did find the Amazon Mobile app available today. Kindle is available in both Google Play and Appstore for download, which is needless to say, weird. The solution is quite simple, Amazon needs to resubmit the application for worldwide status, every single time Microsoft adds new countries to the marketplace, otherwise it's just there for the original countries in Worldwide status.
There's a WP Dev. email about worldwide apps needing resubmission after each addition of countries in the marketplace that goes way back to the origianl expansion of the marketplace. In my opinion, Microsoft should fix this "bug" of their's and quite honestly, get rid of that.
A quick solution would be to add a UK/US address to your account and install the app, and then change the account again back to your home country. I don't know what on earth will happen with any paid apps and updates as I've yet to try it, but if you don't have any paid applications, or you're not interested in any, a quick change will solve your issue.

Warning Cookoo Watch DO NOT BUY

hey just thought i would let you guys know not to purchase this watch, i bought it and the experience has been horrible!
there web site had showed it would support our phone and a few other androids, guess what happens at launch it now supports Ios ONLY(shifty and shady)
the device is a cool idea and hopefully can be pulled off by another company someday.....but this company is a joke of all jokes first of all they dont have a phone number, email correspondence takes days(i am pretty sure email is instant and its 2012), when i got the item its addressed to someone else in Florida(i am in Minnesota)
needless to say this is a warning for everyone considering this item down the road i honestly think i am out of $150 on this deal because non stop emails to cookoo support and the inventor have got me no where. I purchase just about everything online, have it shipped, and end up with a smile.....this on the other hand has been the worst online purchase i have ever made hoping i can get the word out!
This isn't entirely true.
I supported this watch as a kickstarter project and they did state that they would be supporting Android. While currently they have only released the iOS app, as an early backer I have received plenty of communication as to their progress on the Android app. I have found their service to be efficient and their communication to be prompt.
They currently have a version of the app that works for HTC phones, and are working on making this work for Samsung phones, SPECIFICALLY the Galaxy SIII. Just like everything else, the uniformity of iOS makes development quite easy for it, and like just about everything else, apps are released for iOS before Android. I realize this is a generality, but it's often the case.
They have enlisted the help of recognized developers from this very community and they will have an app for your phone soon.

There is a beta on the Play Store compatible only with Samsung devices. Would love to see if someone could get it and make it available to everyone. This cookoo team has really done nothing to little to satisfy their promises to develop for Android. Choosing just the S III/S IV is pretty obtuse in my opinion.

My experience has not been anything like that. It was also clear that as a BT 4.0 low energy device it would not be supported until Android or the manufacturers fork of Android supported BT 4.0. That didn't happen until Android 4.3 came out, or earlier on a few select phones. There are all kinds of BT gadgets that have not worked until very recently, if at all.
At the moment as has been pointed out only the Samsung S4 is supported, I've been in contact with the Kickstarter team and had a couple of responses so far. Yes they take a few days to respond - as you can imagine there probably get hundreds if not thousands of emails. So far it sounds like they have a general Android 4.3 app ready but are waiting on something from Google to get it released . I'm not sure what that could be - but I'm starting to wondering if they actually mean that they are waiting for Android 4.4 which might have some BT API bug fixes or something like that. Since Android 4.4 will be rolling out for Nexus devices very soon - within a month? - I have already ordered my device. They have assured me it will work with Android as soon as the app comes out.
With Kickstarter you are investing in the concept - you have to be patient. Some are just looking for money to fund a volume order, some need much more than the money - time too! I have another Kickstarter project that is now delayed from July release to Feb 2014. It sucks because I really wanted the device right now and may have to buy something temporary, but like I said, this is an investment not just a "pre-order" whether you like it or not.
I hope you can be patient and eventually very happy with the watch!

I thought the issue was a "flash" problem. We got prime for shipping and instant video. Only way I could get it to work was to update flash. That was a while ago, and I haven't messed with it since. What really upsets me is that Amazon has been "talking" about an android instant video app for a long time, but they've yet to do it. However they *do* have apps for Kindle and Apple (may some game boxes?)!!!

Whatever Amazon changed, they also broke the Amazon channel plugins for both Plex and XBMC so just about anybody with a HTPC is dead in the water. There is lots of complaining about it in numerous different places. Below is the email I just got from Amazon customer service. Which REALLY makes me upset. I emailed them with my displeasure and told them that I would NOT be renewing my Prime subscription which is due to expire this August.
What really makes me upset, and I let them know this as well, is it's NOT a flash issue if that's what they want to use as an excuse. If that's the case, then why is it that Apple products (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad) have had the Amazon Instant video app? Apple products have never had Flash on it as Jobs wouldn't allow it. And the Kindle Fire is android-based with a different launcher and no Google Play access, but yet it has Amazon Instant video.
I would argue that they don't want to hurt their Kindle Fire sales, but then why allow it on Apple products as well?
I hope they DO release it, and soon. But, at this point, I'm going to use Vudu/Ultraviolet. I haven't had any issues with them and they have an Android app that streams and downloads my Vudu/Ultraviolet purchases on my Nexus 7. It isn't in HD, but I don't need HD for my tablet and SD looks just fine. If I want HD, then I can watch it on my Roku device instead on my HD tv.
I say, complain to Amazon about this, but do it in a civil manner. No need to be rude about it. Just explain your frustration and let them know that you intend to no longer utilize their service until they do release an app.
I won't be purchasing anymore videos through Amazon until they release the app and I MIGHT reconsidering getting Prime when/if they do release it, but I told them I'm not making any promises.

I recommend asking for a refund if you are not happy. They tend to be very gracious with them, and they gave me a partial refund on my prime membership. I explained that I only got prime to watch the videos. I'm using netflix again, which does not give refunds, but only does a month at a time.
I never really used prime on my phone to watch movies (I have hulu+ and netflix for that) Well, I just checked it out, and yup, broken using skyfire.
I guess it's time to fire off an email to Amazon and get an android version so we can use this service. Hell, you can stream on a kindle, and that's basically android (Gingerbread).

That's my exact point as well. I've pointed that out to Amazon. I just got a reply which appears to state that they ARE working on an app for Android, but it's so vague, who knows. Plus, it could be the person who wrote it didn't use proper grammar.
Here's what I received:
I understand that having this feature will* provide additional convenience to our customers. So,* I’ve taken this as a feedback and forwarded your request* to our Amazon Instant Video team for consideration as we make future improvements and they’re working on it to make this feature available at the earliest.

As I said, the grammar isn't perfect, so it's hard to tell one way or the other. Either they are saying they'll take my suggestions and give it to their Instant Video Team for consideration, OR they are already working on a solution and they'll still give them my feedback.
Can't tell. As I said, vague.

It's a flash problem. That's why Amazon built an app for streaming video, for the iPad and later for the iPhone. But (IMHO) I don't forsee an app for android. I've heard that a lot of people are upset. I even slammed Amazon for it in a few reviews. Honestly don't think they really care. We're not going to renew r prime membership because if this. It's started right after android stopped supporting flash. I was P.O.'d but then found out that I could *still* install flash. Switched to Dolphin browser and played with it for a while. Then just stopped cause I felt that Amazon was being ver "Apple-ish" in their attitude toward android. I won't even bother trying out their free apps.

Though, do keep complaining! And ask for credit! And then spend ONLY THE CREDIT.

Most of the people I know (myself included) have Amazon Prime primarily (pun intended) for the free 2-day shipping. The instant video is just a bonus. Yes, it'd be nice to have it work on my phone, but really I'm paying the $79/year or so just to get the free shipping (and I easily make up more than that in saved shipping costs).
That being said, I wouldn't mind if they made an Android app that worked on devices outside of the Kindle Fire line, but I can hardly demand it.

Topherk, agree with you that instant video on my phone is no big deal (though streaming on our tablet, to our bedroom tv's is *pretty* cool). I just think it's kind of a d**k move on Amazon's part to not provide an instant video app to their android customers? As a prime member I also remember seeing "free monthly book rentals". But, that is only for prime members who own kindles. I absolutely love the kindle app, used to buy all my books on amazon. Now I get them from google. Prime members who use android have been asking for an instant video app for months now....

Our main problem is that it was working via a browser but Amazon broke it on purpose last week which has a lot of us ticked.

I'm not saying they broke it on purpose. I would be surprised if anyone was having problems streaming video from their windows boxes. To be honest, I wasn't all that upset when kindle owners got an instant video app. It‘s marketing, and I understand that. But then Apple gets an app??? I assumed (months ago) that android would be next. Hasn't happened...
I agree. I have no intention of renewing my Amazon Prime; as when I initially had a separate account AMAZON suggested that both my husband and I use the Prime Share option. It was because of all the notifications on a few forums around April 17th about AIV that prompted me to try it on all of my stock devices(evo 2.3.4, Original Kindle Fire and SG3 4.1.1) I did a review on it, apparently its about time for me to do an update. I, too have an issue with IOS getting a dedicated app versus android...WHEN IOS DOESNT EVEN SUPPORT OR PROMOTE FLASH. It was nice having an option other than my KF and Netflix, but because of this deliberate non support(not just android, there is a dwindling list of supported viewers) issue AND the crippling Prime Options, there will be no renewal singular from me.
I've also kept my complaints as non accusory and suggestive. Oddly if you can view my screenshot of the conversation android phones were never supposed be able to view via the browser...flipside because android is so fragged an application is difficult to build. Geez, not even a beta and testing?

Yup. It's working again for me as well. Wonder how long before they notice and "break" it again.
