[Q] sd card not reading - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sd card stopped reading on g2 and I've tried the following:
Used different sd cards, still nothing detecting.
And sd card reads fine on my computer via card reader
Tried a master reset
My question is since its still under warranty and this model I have has been rooted with s off, will they charge me for the full replacement fee? I've already called tmobile to get a replacement. Phone works fine its just not reading the sd cards I place in the slots.

Its not under warranty if you rooted it....that being said its up to you. I dont think they have time to check. they just wipe em check hardware and see if they should refurb or trash.

That sucks, you can use fastboot to apply update.zip files so I would try that(maybe get a brick and say it was from the update)

I understand that its against warranty if the phone is rooted but the cause of the SD read isn't a software issue its a hardware issue. With that being said I've been doing some research and it seems that its better if i somehow brick the phone, but I did call them up today, or well the tmobile sales rep did and told them that the sd card wasn't being read. Has anyone used warranty on a rooted phone?

Also is there a way to unroot without being able to use the SD card?

Not wanting to postwhore, but I turned off the phone and left it there off for a good 15 minutes, then rebooted and somehow the sd card's reading atm so now going to follow these steps to unroot the phone before returning it.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-g2-htc-desire-z-complete-guide/

One could argue that the non approved software broke the hardware.... just sayin......

is this going to update the phone through zip file? Will that turn on S off?

True but seems like i'm the only one with this particular issue. I don't see how rooting my phone would lead to an SD card reading malfunction. Both of which are unrelated..

i have not tried it since i don't have a problem with my sdcard reader, but the fastboot binary has an option to apply a zip file via the terminal on your computer. so as long as you can read and do a little research you should be ok to try it(worst case you brick your phone and you're done)

update*
I sent in my phone even though it was perma-rooted, and got tmobile to replace it free of charge. Not sure how that worked out but phone's been fully functional since.

[Q] HBOOT Menu: SIMLOCK

I was reviewing HBOOT menu on my HTC Desire. I clicked SIMLOCK option and received the following message:
FAT32 init OK
Open MCCMMC file fail
Open CID file fail
Process done, reboot device?
What is the process done above? Did this process modify anything on my phone? What exactly SIMLOCK does?
Thanks.
You wasn't reviewing then, you was messing around and potentially buggering your phone up!
Simlock is where your phone will only accept one networks Sim card. It didn't find the files needed so doesn't seem to have done anything though.
Here's a tip - don't mess if you don't know what you are doing.

Otherwise you have a one way ticket to a (potentially) bricked phone
Ok guys, I shall stay away from this part of the phone
What I understand is that Simlock option tries to modifyp the phone's Simlock status with some files in MMC and CID file (custom created in most of the cases to unlock the phone etc.). Since there is no such file found in MMC, this process did not modify/delete anything in my phone. Is this the case?

Thats what it appears to have done yes.
Thanks for the advise.
With the proper files in place this should allow us to lock our phones to our specific SIM?
Well no to a specific carrier which is more of an option for operators to lock a device than for you I believe
And to those who blamed op for playing around seriously it is not much you can do on the phone or bootloader for that matter as long as it is stock it is not like HTC provides you with the option to manage anything apart from flashing stock roms
ok... i did the same foolishness...and got the same reply on my phone... bt i guess it did manage to lock it... not totally though... coz when i switch sim cards... and turn on the data connection on my phone ... my phone hangs up... bt when i dont have the data connection switched on.. it wroks well... and when i put that sim which i waS Using while pressed the sim lock button... it works well and fine .. even with the data connection on.... you can read the threads i've posted reguarding this here

any solution to this problem??
I did same thing today and thought my phone would be a brick, lucky me.
Luckily it always fails. I managed to accidentally hit it once too. It is too easy to start it imho. Slight drop in concentration and there you go, you bricked your phone.

I doubt this causes your phone to brick. I tried it also with my Wildfire. It could not find the required files and just rebooted. My guess is it doesn't matter if you select it by accident.

agree with you did the same no probs
I'm guessing it'll allow all SIM's including AT&T etc but Not one Single person on the XDA forums seems to know how to use AT&T on our HTC's.
They support the 1900Mhz GSM band but it's "LOCKED" so you can't get voice or data period.
Is there a legitimate way to Carrier unlock HTC Phones?
I have my specific IMEI unlock code to get it to work supposedly but no one has any idea how.............
Thanks

Am I Bricked?

Ok, I rebooted into recovery last night and I got a 5 vibrates and a green blinking light.
I can get my phone to go into android if i have it pluged into usb but sd support is disabled. If i unplug at any time, it reboots into 5 vibrates. Battery pull.
I can get it ino recovery sometimes but nothing from sd card can be accessed.
I can get it into bootloader but it says s-on for some reason and nothing is flashable from bootloader including ruu's or radio upgrades etc...
The phone is not communicating with pc or pc with phone
Adb is not functional either.
Ive tried everything that i can think of to unroot etc..
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im desperate.
Thanks,

Your sd card may be corrupt. First, back it up, then format it to fat32 in windows. Then put the PB31IMG.zip file on the root of your sd: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9Q4CNAGX
Put the sd card back in the phone and do a battery pull. When you put the battery back in, hold the volume down key for a few seconds if the phone is plugged in. If it isn't plugged in, hold the power button and the volume down key until the bootloader comes up. It should eventually ask you if you want to update, and press volume up.
If you can't get to the bootloader, then you are most likely bricked. Talk to verizon about a replacement.
Also, before this happened, were you flashing any radios via bootloader?
Well if you got S-ON, I would just take it to VZW and say this **** is messed up get me a replacement, unless you didnt originally buy the phone from them.
I'd try a different SD card formatted to Fat 32 with the RUU on it, unless you already tried that.
but i cant even flash an ruu from my pc either. That has nothing to do with the sd does it? Also, if i put anything on my sd card to flash in bootloader. It just says its checking file and never asks me if i want to install it like it used to.
Does an sd card have to be in the phone in order to flash a ruu from the pc?

Don't think so, but I think it has something to do with HBOOT or Radio version that's in the RUU, so if the one that is on the phone now is higher then the RUU, it wont update. Maybe if its the same version as well it wont update. Dont think you need the SD card to run RUU from PC.
So I assume that since you are trying to fix it, there is no way you can get a warranty replacement?

Well if it says S-ON then you are OK. Does it have stock recovery or clockwork on it, if even accessible? If you call in, they will send you a new/refurb model, then you send it back in. They wont even bother checking. I would suggest calling over going to a store. You get better service and more convenient. All I would say that your phone does this and that and wont boot and they will probably try to tell you to do a few things, but if you can't get into the OS, I don't see your phone call being long.

Only if he goes to the store. If he calls and gets it taken care of, they will send him a phone, then he sends it back. I believe all they check is that there was no water damage and cracked screen and other physical damage.

If you got insurance on your policy, then yes, you can say it was lost/stolen. You just pay the $90 deductible or whatever for the new phone.
But if you don't have insurance then you're screwed on that approach, also if you call for warranty replacement they just check for any physical damage, but they do try to boot it

you should be ok. try flashing stock rom through hboot (pb31img file). you can find one posted in the get back to stock thread. if you can't find it let me know and i'll get it for you.
did you try flashing recovery through hboot as well? i can send you a pb31img with clockwork 2.5.0.5 if you want to try but i think you need a signed image.

Verizon will cover this under the one year warranty. Thankfully I thought I was the only one, this happened to me twice.
Inc,
What were you doing at the time? Did you flash an incorrect hboot? I'm really surprised it can't be recovered if you can access the bootloader. Did you try another card just to rule it out?

USB Port damaged. Need to Unroot

Hey folks,
The usb port for my HTC Desire is damaged and I am trying to unroot my device back to standard so I can send it away to be fixed under my O2 insurance policy.
Following the Unlockr method installing the RUU rom requires connecting the device with the USB cable, which in this case is NOT possible as my port is damaged.
Is there a way I can flash the RUU via Recovery? As I could transfer it onto my micro SD card via an adapter.
You can probably get away with just uninstalling super user

Are you sure the USB is broke?
Some cheap usb cables overtime become less of a snug
fit and give the impression of a broken port.
If you can make it work by bending the plug bit upwards
a bit then its probably just the cable.
Already tried usb brick fix here from xda?
To the PB99IMG.zip method:
1.) Download o2 ruu:
RUU_Bravo_Froy2_UK_2.14.207.1_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_144166_
signed.exe
2.) After this, follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10509780&postcount=102
Maybe you a card reader to copy the PB99IMG.zip file on your desire's sd card.

After a quick look at this method it looks VERY promising. I am going to have to get a hold of an external charger and charge my battery to 100% to ensure I can carry out any procedure safely.

I have same problem, I bought a bad car charger, which had damaged my desire and flyer's USB port. Both of my desire and flyer already did s-off, still cannot get them back to s-on.
Dont bother unrooting, insurance dont care if your rooted or not (and even if they did rooting didnt break your usb so theres nothing they can do about it).
I sent my desire to orange insurace with cm7 on it, and had it replaced through orange under warranty with rooted stock rom. They said nothing either time, although it was swapped at my front door.

Why would they care if it was rooted if its a hardware repair?

Ofcourse I get it... every company tries to escape warranty.
But don't they have to prove that your actions (rooting) have somehow affected the phone? Which obviously it hasn't because it's hardware...
Why don't you take up insurance and just blow it up... do you get it?

It is a hardware fault being my USB port however I just don't want take any chances sending it for repair, their attitude may be that because I have rooted its voided the device's warranty therefore my insurance won't cover any repairs.
I haven't tried the method yet as I am going to get the lend of a friends battery due to the fact I cannot charge my device
Why not download an app and unroot it then??

Has anybody returned a rooted/unlocked phone?

Due to the issues in my other post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24049918#post24049918)
I'm likely going to have to return my phone. And because I can't get any computer to recognize the phone, I can't de-root/re-lock the phone.
I'm wondering if anyone's heard what happens when a rooted/unlocked phone is returned. I know it voids warranty - I'm just wondering if anybody's ever tried and gotten away with it.

Great idea - thanks!
I must admit, I don't really understand how to use ODIN - I've read their website and the XDAforums page on it, and I'm still a bit confused.
How do I find the firmware files to flash on to the phone? They don't seem to be included. And once I find them, how do I get them on to the SD card?
If I'm not mistaken, can you even remove the SD card from the phone?

I wouldn't have a clue for your former question but for this, there isn't a physical SD card in the Galaxy Nexus, just a virtual SD card that is really just a partition.

Nope - no physical SD card in our Gnex
You could use Airdroid for example to get the files on your "sd card"
edit: never used Odin - but I THINK these are the images you're after: http://code.google.com/intl/nl-NL/android/nexus/images.html
You could try chain fires other app supersu which can perminatly unroot your phone. Dont think you can relock bootloader without a PC though https://play.google.com/store/search?q=supersu&c=apps

No matter how much flashing you do from the device, you must have a computer to actually re-lock it once it's stock. So without a computer, you won't be able to fully lock it again sadly.

"You're not doing it right"
You've had it connect when it wasn't rooted so its probably a driver issue on your computer.
use dropbox or a bluetooth connection to your computer to get the files onto the phone.

[Q] SD card blank or has unsupported file system on Samsung Epic 4G

Dear All,
I have a huge problem. My phone(Samsung Epic 4G) just went dead and when i powered it back on i keep getting an icon in the notifications that says sd blank or unsupported file system when just before it was reading it with everything on it.
Can u Please suggest How to fix this sd card blank or unsupported filesystem error as i had done Odin and formatted my sd card number of times also. I tried with different SD cards and New SD card also.
So someone please help me on this in finding a solution for this.
Try formatting it while it's in your phone

This could also be a hardware issue. Odin back to stock if it still gives you a error on multiple cards and using the phone to format it then it is hardware. This happened to my wife's epic they had to give her a new phone cost me nothing with TEP.

If you have TEP bring into your local Sprint store and tell them what is going on it is a hardware issue and they will have to fix or replace it. If you don't have TEP not sure.

Do you have some equivalent of TEP (totel equipment protection) with your carrier in India? You need to bring the phone back to stock as any sign of rooting or flashing will void your warranty. Then bring it to your carrier and they should replace it assuming you have some form of insurance on it.
