[Q] Desire (stock, not root) can't boot ! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I need help with my HTC Desire 2.2 stock (not rooted).
I don't know why but it can't boot (freeze on HTC white screen).
I tried vol down + power button to enter in bootloader then tried to clear storage and other items but I still can't boot in normal mode.
Anybody can help me please ?

How long have you left it before turning it off?

About 1 minute. How long should I wait ?
Since I cleared storage it vibrates 7 times quickly and doesn't boot.

Any resolve to the above problem anyone? I have the same situation, also bootloader loads intermittently, when it does, mostly gets stuck after a few seconds. Any suggestions appreciated

Probably a hardware failure. But you can also try to download a stock rom. Then remove your sim and sd card. Go into the bootloader, select fastboot and then run the ruu on your pc.
If you still have the same problem you have a hardware failure.

cant enter boot loader as well
I have almost the same prob here. my phone is dead and after going to boot loader and want to flash a stock rom,the phone does not recover after RUU wanting it to reload bootloader

I get the feeling that it's to do with hardware as well...
I extracted rom.zip from a stock ROM and tried flashing via SD card, but it either comes up as invalid CID or freezes altogether after 'Parsing PB99IMG.zip'

Exactly same error at my end to... cid error both with rom.zip n Rom.exe please help us... pleasre
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

If you have a cid error, then you have the wrong rom. Cid means that if you are branded, you can only flash branded roms. For example, if your carrier is vodafone, you should flash a vodafone stock rom. Otherwise you will get that error.

[FIXED!] Uninstalling fbook bricked my phone? Stuck at HTC logo! HELP!

Hi - I have posted in the leedroid thread with no response so i'm posting a new thread:
I was running leedroid 1.6b - i uninstalled facebook and all was fine. I then at some point yesterday rebooted my phone & it got stuck at the htc logo.
I entered fastboot which works fine, but then tried to enter recovery and once again it got stuck at the htc logo (vibrates a few times and does nothing).
I assumed my recovery image had got corrupted, and so i tried to go through the root process (the second one) again - everything seems to go fine until i try to enter recovery where it still gets stuck at the htc logo.
Can someone assist on what i can do to get recovery working again?
-------- SOLUTION BELOW ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so here are the things i tried that didnt work:
Unrevoked - couldnt run as required you to be in OS
r6 root - Could do step 1 but not step 2 (Hang at htc logo)
Official RUU Exe - Would complete successfully but still hangs at HTC logo
Also tried formatting sdcard, removing ext partitions, removing sim card - none worked.
Finally i tried this and it did work:
1. D/L PB99IMG zip from following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684259
2. Rename to PB99IMG.zip
3. Place on sdcard (i just took the card out & used a usb adapter)
4. Put card in phone & start with vol-down pressed.
The phone will detect the zip & flash.
This worked - now unrooted & ready for rooting again.
Not sure why the PB99IMG method worked when the RUU exe failed, but there you go

Does ADB find your phone?
What hboot do you have?
Do you have a goldcard?
Don't worry, as long as you can access fastboot you're not bricked. Although you must've done something more then uninstalling Facebook. Try flash a new recovery using unrevoked.
How you startet your Phone? (Home+Power dont starts Recovery for me) only with VoldumeDown+Power i can get to Recovery.

I was on hboot 0.75 but when i tried to root again it got changed to 0.80?
I swear all i did was uninstall facebook - even used it for quite a while after that - maybe something else did it.
My phone is unbranded so dont have a goldcard.
Havent tested adb - if it does work what are the steps?
I thought you had to be fully booted to run unrevoked?

As long as adb finds your phone you should be able to run unrevoked. Try that. I'm not sure about this, but you may also be able to run it from fast/hboot.
Remember that to boot into recovery mode on desire you'll need to first boot using vol down + power.
You could also try picking clear storage in fastboot if neither above work, but we can come back to that later.
Hi - I tried unrevoked - it didnt work - i think it wants me to be in the OS before it does anything - all it says when i am in the hboot screen is "waiting for device - plug phone in now and enable usb debugging".
I can get to both fastboot & hboot screens, and also usb works fine in both, so i know the drivers are installed ok on my xp machine.
All it does is show me the htc logo and vibrate a few times when i try to go into the recovery mode.
Is there a way to get unrevoked to do its thing without being in the OS? Or another method?
Also just tried an official RUU - got all the way through the setup fine - when it completed it reboot the phone, and it still gets stuck at the htc boot screen & vibrates

Did you remove HTCFacebook.apk? Or Facebook.apn? HTCFacebook is part of the system and should not be removed..
was your SD partitioned for A2SD+ and is it still? Installing a Rom that does not support A2SD+ with an ext3 will cause bootloops.

Try the following:
Boot your phone while holding vol down.
Wait for the "searching for p99img (or whatever it is) to finish.
Press vol down three times, then click power.
Press vol up to confirm.
Try boot your phone as normal.
Did that work?

Not sure - i did it through titanium backup as the update would not install - guess that is what did it? I'm sure it was the normal app not the htc one though.
Yeah my card does have an ext3 partition - the phone isnt bootlooping though it is getting stuck at the htc logo? Cant even get into recovery to flash another rom.

That's very interesting! I tried to uninstall fb apk with titanium several times and while uninstalling my desire reboots.
So seems that I had some luck with that...but still fb stays
Maybe you uninstalled the htcfb apk.

Ok so i tried removing my ext3 partition (leaving me with just a fat32 partition over the whole sd card) and redoing the whole rooting procedure. It still gets through step1 fine, but when get back to the hboot screen & try to enter recovery it just shows me the htc logo and vibrates.
Anything else i can try? If not i guess i will have to get the phone replaced...
*Bump*
Anything else i can try?
Finally fixed it - solution in post 1
Spoke too soon - was all up and running again but the phone decided to reboot by itself after about 4hrs & now is stuck at the logo again.
Tried the method i used before but no luck this time.
So now rerooting, unrooting, PB99IMG do not work for me - can't boot into OS or into recovery...
Think my phone must be faulty?
I'm facing the same problem as you now. So, do you have any permanent solution so far...?

You should be able to do what Greenfieldan suggests. It is possible to work through this issue, so don't fear but it make take a few tries.

Thread stalking is fun, I see which thread you are reading, but you may have to reset you phone.
Do you either:
Have a recovery installed (if you aren't sure, then you may not)
have a PCIMG36 on the root of your sdcard, (if you aren't sure then you may not)

Just download the actual ruu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060. It will be one of the .exe files same version of you had on the phone will prolly work best. Then do what xhausx said and run the ruu file once there. Thanks xhausx btw cause i was confused too.

Need Help
I know this is an old thread, but I'm working on an old phone. Hopefully some of you guys are still following this.
My father has an EVO 3D that showed up one day stuck on the white HTC screen. The only remedy was to pull the battery. I thought it would be no big deal to just go into the boot menu and either try and run recovery, or at worst do a factory reset. Both of these options failed. I even made a few attempts at trying from the SD card with a ROM or two. So I downloaded the RUU direct from HTC thinking that would finally take care of the problem. But after connecting up in FASTBOOT mode and running the RUU, it eventually fails when the update gets to the point that it's supposed to restart the phone in bootloader mode. Because at that point the phone just restarts to the white HTC logo again, and the software times out telling me that it can't connect to the device. Any help here other than passing me a trash can Thanks in advance!

Desire Bricked?

Ok, will give you as much detail as I can, hopefully someone can help.
My Desire is suffering from the rebooting constantly problem. Now, I have to send it back to T-Mobile so I though before I done so, I should put the correct Rom on it.
I downloaded all the T-Mob ones I could find, and not of them worked, two were the wrong bootloader version and two just had errors on start up.
Bootloader 0.83.0001 btw.
Anyway, not sure what has happened next but now when I try to turn my Desire on it just hangs on the white HTC start up screen. So i tried Power + Vol down to go into recovery and it does the same, stick on the white HTC screen.
I have taken the SD card out to try this and it has no effect, it's the same as the above.
At a loss now as to what to do, is the phone totally broke or is there some way that I can recover it?
Any help muchly appreciated.
Edit - Is there a way of flashing the RUU directly to the phone to make it run on start up? OR am I talking gibberish?

Sorry that I can't help you with the bootloader issue, but just a quick note for your future reference when you (hopefully) get the bootloader sorted: Bear in mind that there's a big difference between t-mobile in the UK and in the US. It's possible that you've downloaded and flashed a US-based t-mobile ROM which has made the phone unstable.
As far as I know, UK-based t-mobile handsets operate on the 900/1800/2100 MHz bands. In the US, t-mobile runs on 1700/1900/2100 MHz bands, so the ROM you've loaded may not actually be compatible with your hardware. This may or may not help you solve the problem / avoid it in future.
Good luck!
If u can get into bootloader n fastboot try n make a gold card n flash a ruu that way.
If even try using unrevoked again n c how far u get
Device HTC Desire
Rom RcmMixSv08
SD class 4 6.40gb fat32 / 1gb ext3
S OFF
Radio 5.11.05.14
Hboot 0.93.1000
custom hboot Alpharev Cm7
Recovery Alpharev Cmw 2.5.1.8
Fake Flash Cwm 3.0.0.5
IM thinking that flashing the ruu will sove all ur problems so no need to it send back
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
I think u have to unroot ur device first. This hapens to me before n I just do the step i give u down. It will help u but u have to get the correct ruu file for ur device
1. Reboot your HTC Desire into bootloader mode by turning the phone off then pressing the power button while holding down the volume down button.
2. Select “Fastboot” and hit power button.
3. Connect your HTC Desire to your computer and make sure “Fastboot USB” comes on the HTC Desire.
4. Just download the RUU file and run.
Thats it u r now unrooted ur device should start up as like u first turn it on. Sorry for the bad english.
i would recommend flashing a new recovery first via fastboot before trying RUU (though it is a good suggestion as well). If you can get to fastboot, you just need to download whatever recovery image you use, connect your phone via usb and use:
fastboot flash recovery C:\wherever_you_put_it\wahtever_image.img
Recovery can become corrupt too just like anything else on the phone..

[Q] S-ON, invalid recovery/system partitions, boot loop, bricked device?

Hi all,
Was attempting to root my desire HD and install CM7. Somehow, I managed to screw up the phone. I was using ACE so at some point I had root, and was able to flash different partitions (which is where I screwed up). Here are the facts:
1. Phone boot loops
2. There's no working recovery partition (I manually flashed that when I did have root), and a completely busted system partition
3. the phone is still S-ON (not sure how this stayed this way) - which means I can't fastboot
I tried downloading and installing the stock ROM, and it loaded, and installed - but then neither 'recovery' nor 'factory reset' do anything. Both still lead to boot loops...
From researching the web, I understand that:
1. If I don't have S-OFF - I can't fastboot, and even the PD98img.zip won't install
2. I can't get S-OFF without having a working system first (either via HTC's tools or some root'ing app).
Am I SOL, or does anyone have ideas of what I should try?
thx.
Blake

You haven't tried running an RUU yet? It restores your phone to factory state. Best way is to flash an RUU and start over with the Advanced Ace Hack Kit. I'm pretty sure you didn't read the manual properly and follow it word for word. By RUU I don't mean the PD98IMG.zip, I mean the exe file. Connect your phone to the computer and run the exe.

I tried - but i got the 'failed to communicate with your phone, make sure USB is connected and phone is in debug mode'...As I understand it, running the exe requires that phone to be in a working state. I only have hboot now...
Am I mistaken?
In hboot, press power on fastboot. When FASTBOOT shows up in a red background, then connect it to the computer and try running the RUU.
If that doesn't work download the htc sync (drivers). You need to switch of the antivirus before installing. The program will prompt you before.

Ok - I managed to get the right RUU from shipped-roms, and I used it to flash the ROM. It took a few mins, and then told me that it was successful.
However, I'm still stuck in a boot loop...

Thanked you by mistake. Tell me, how long are you waiting after turning on the phone before considering it to be boot looping? For any ROM, the first boot always takes time. Not too long, but a few minutes. In that time it will just show the HTC splash screen. This happens because the dalvik-cache has to be built and the time it takes depends on the number of apps. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you're assuming too soon that it's bootlooping. Wait for some time and see.

Htc 10 stuck in bootloop-

Hi, I bought my HTC 10 around 7 months ago and a few weeks ago it restarted and it´s kept restarting since then. I tried doing a hard reset from the recovery because it doesn´t boot properly, but it didn´t work. I wanted to flash the RUU but I couldn´t find the right one on HTC SUPPORT. I wanted to try rooting my device and wiping data using TWRP to install a ROM and see if this could work, but as my phone doesn´t boot, I can´t unlock the OEM or debug developer mode.
Now I can´t even access to recovery mode so I can´t check my OS model, I just can access to bootloader mode.
If anyone can help me I´d really appreciate it.

My phone is in a stuck in a bootloop, I was using it one day and it restarted by itself. I was able to use it for a few minutes and then it restarted again untill the point that it doesn´t boot anymore. The only thing I have done is a hard reset from recovery, but it keeps restarting. Now I can´t boot to download mode that´s why I haven´t flashed the RUU, I just can boot into bootloader mode and when I try to boot into recovery or download mode from there it restarts again.
im having the same issue.
the buttons randomly stopped working, so i restarted the phone only to be greeted with a bootloop.
i had lineage os on my phone for a while, and today i installed a update, so that might be related to the sudden bootloop.
when i press vol down + power it just boot loops. if i press vol up + vol down it boots into the bootloader.
trying to start download or recovery mode just gets me into a boot loop again.
the bootloader says s-on.
i just found this in another thread

Flashed bad boot image in download mode
Could not enter download, RUU, recovery, or system mode - all of them enter into bootloop
Could only enter white background bootloader mode (Volume Up + Volume Down + Power), which only allows flashing signed hosd image
What I did:
Followed @Tarima's link above. With the phone in the white background bootloader mode, I ran fastboot flash $x $x.img with $x = each of the partitions. Except for hosd, all the other commands printed an error like
Code:
sending 'xbl' (1809 KB)... OKAY
writing 'xbl'... FAILED (remote: cannot flash this partition in s-on state)
but I continued anyway.
Selected "REBOOT TO BOOTLOADER" from white background bootloader
Downloaded an RUU exe file from here (I got the 1.96.617.20 version, but in hindsight it probably doesn't matter which version), and extracted an RUU zip file (following this guide on Linux)
Renamed the RUU ZIP to 2PS6IMG.zip, copied it to the root of an empty FAT32-formatted microSD card, and inserted the card into the HTC 10 (inspired by this post and this post)
Selected "BOOT TO DOWNLOAD MODE" from white background bootloader
This triggered a screen prompting whether to install update from SD card (photo).
I didn't need to actually install the update from the SD card; instead, the presence of a valid update on the SD card may have short-circuited whatever was causing the download mode to crash loop, and allowed the phone to enter download mode and accept fastboot flash commands. Since my problem was a bad boot image, I just did
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
with the boot.img extracted from the official Nougat OTA zip's firmware.zip, and it worked! Phone was able to boot back into system / download / RUU / recovery. :victory:
I'd already given up hope and bought another HTC 10 off Swappa I've now learned my lesson and I'm going to S-OFF at once.

im having the same issue.
the buttons randomly stopped working, so i restarted the phone only to be greeted with a bootloop.
i had lineage os on my phone for a while, and today i installed a update, so that might be related to the sudden bootloop.
when i press vol down + power it just boot loops. if i press vol up + vol down it boots into the bootloader.
trying to start download or recovery mode just gets me into a boot loop again.
the bootloader says s-on.
i just found this in another thread

I´m gonna give it a try, but I´m not sure if it´s gonna work. Hopefully I might be able to boot into download mode and get to know my CID. Thanks
i promised to update once i tested the methode. sadly it didnt seem to work for me.
flashing hosd worked like in jichuan89 case. but puting the 2PS6IMG.zip into a formatted sd card didnt seem to work for me.
booting into download mode sill gives me a bootloop.
unless someone comes up with a new idea on how to fix this, i might have to get a new phone :/

If you didn't do anything to your phone it's probably the battery. This is the most talked about problem in these forums. Can you boot to download mode? If so what's your CID?

That's all good but unfortunately if you can't boot to download mode you can't flash RUU. Also if the method above didn't work i think it's time to send it to HTC or but a new phine

Alright, thanks for your help
Hi Guys,
I think the problem causes by power and volume keys' ribbon. When i try pressing and holding power and volume down keys the gray HTC logo appears. But when i try pressing only volume down key the gray HTC logo appears again. As if power button always pressing itself. I'm gonna try remove connection after normal HTC logo disappears. If it fix the problem i will inform you again. Wish me luck :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
