I tried one of the rooting processes today and it didn't work. Now when I turn my Evo on it goes no further than the white HTC screen that you get when you turn it on. When I try to run the RUU it gets a connection error and won't go through. Can someone please help?

If you pull the battery can you get to the bootloader screen? (hold volume down and power button when turning on)
You should be able to do what Greenfieldan suggests. It is possible to work through this issue, so don't fear but it make take a few tries.

Thread stalking is fun, I see which thread you are reading, but you may have to reset you phone.
Do you either:
Have a recovery installed (if you aren't sure, then you may not)
have a PCIMG36 on the root of your sdcard, (if you aren't sure then you may not)

Go in to fastboot and you should see something toward the top that says "FASTBOOT USB", once there run the RUU

I have a pc36img file on the root of my sd card. It says that it can't open it when i select flash zip from sd card.
Just download the actual ruu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060. It will be one of the .exe files same version of you had on the phone will prolly work best. Then do what xhausx said and run the ruu file once there. Thanks xhausx btw cause i was confused too.

Need Help
I know this is an old thread, but I'm working on an old phone. Hopefully some of you guys are still following this.
My father has an EVO 3D that showed up one day stuck on the white HTC screen. The only remedy was to pull the battery. I thought it would be no big deal to just go into the boot menu and either try and run recovery, or at worst do a factory reset. Both of these options failed. I even made a few attempts at trying from the SD card with a ROM or two. So I downloaded the RUU direct from HTC thinking that would finally take care of the problem. But after connecting up in FASTBOOT mode and running the RUU, it eventually fails when the update gets to the point that it's supposed to restart the phone in bootloader mode. Because at that point the phone just restarts to the white HTC logo again, and the software times out telling me that it can't connect to the device. Any help here other than passing me a trash can Thanks in advance!

I downloaded the executable, ran it and I get the following error:
USB Connection Error (Something like that)
The phone reboots and just says htc. The executable is waiting for boot loader and times out after a minute or so.
I unplug the usb after the executable errors out and it instantly goes to a boot loader screen with ruu. I cannot run anything and have no choice but to battery pull.
According to the RUU thread, one person mentioned having to complete part 2 of rooting so i did that. I still cannot return this thing to stock!!!
I need to send it back to sprint, but I gotta get it back to stock first.
How the crap do I get this back to stock!
I'd reply in the RUU thread, but it looks like the last guy who posted never got a response...hopefully this thread will get me an answer.
adb reboot into recovery using "adb reboot recovery" then enable USB and run the RUU

I ran in to the same issue just now. I couldn't fix it, but here is how to do essentially the same thing.
Follow this guide to extract the RUU
Rename the rom.zip file you extract to PC36IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card
Reboot into the bootloader, it will load the file and ask if you wanna install it, you should do so
It'll finish and ask if it should reboot, choose yes and boot into a stock phone.
Its a driver issue, at least it was for me, the google drivers don't work for the htc ruu application. You need the htc drivers install for the phone to be recognized by the rom updater. Hope that helps.
i had that issue too, for me it was the drivers. i then used my work computer and it allowed me to use the RUU
I always had to run a ruu from fastboot in order for it to work
YMMV, but I had to run the oldest RUU first when I was at 1.47 level, and then re-run 1.47 RUU for it to work. Otherwise, bootloader would never get pickup up.
I always had to restart the RUU after I got the error first. Run it again after it times out, when your phone is sitting at the HTC screen and it will work.
Just install the latest HTC Sync and you're set. That will fix your issue. Install HTC Sync and run the RUU afterwards.

You can always got into that recovery when holding down vol and pwr. If you go to recovery you should only see a triangle and an exclamation. That means you are not rooted.

At this time there isn't a way to get your Evo 100% back to stock. Why do you quote yourself?
^I quoted myself because mattrb thought I was being vague, and I didn't want anyone to be confused, so I emphasized my previous post which was clear enough, I thought....and I was right!
Thanks guys for all the help. In the end, I used the copied the RUU ROM to the SDCARD, named it PC36IMG and restarted the phone holding volume down...the rest was automatic.
hey dreamliner did u use the 1.47 ruu or the 1.32? I am in need of the same thing but I cant get the 1.47 to run...
would this work renaming the zip and copying it to the mSD card?
http://www.sdx-downloads.com/sdx/evo/stock/OTA_Supersonic_1.47.651.1-1.32.651.6_release.zip
I cant get the RUU to extract using process manager, and only once have I gotten the 1.47 RUU to boot the device into bootloader and tried again with the phone on the HTC black screen, unplugged, re plugged and thenran it again and it was giving me the 170 usb error again.

This is the easy solution, worked for me. No need to make things more complicated by extracting the rom.zip.
As bcnice said just run the RUU and when your phone is showing the HTC logo and you get the USB error just rerun the RUU.
More information added in my 3rd post below...
I've searched the forums, googled and tried praying to the smartphone gods and I can't find an answer. Maybe you guys can help.
I downloaded a ruu that got half way through the process when it said I was using the wrong ruu and to instigate the recovery procedure - which I did. Unfortunately the phone didn't go into the white startup screen (the one you get if you hold the return key while turning on) with the recovery option, when rebooted, therefore preventing it's recovery.
The phone has the green charging light when pluged into usb but there is no 'HTC' screen or anything when trying to boot it. Just a black screen. I removed the battery and all I get is a vibration when turning it on and that's it, although on a few occasions the buttons on the bottom of the unit have lit up but to no avail.
Forgive me if the details are vague but it's all I have. I hope someone can help...

I think I used the incorrect ruu; that's why it sent me to recovery mode. I think it's AMOLED which is why I picked the ruu I did but it is a 2.1 phone and I was trying to get to 2.2. I think I used the wrong ruu...
No, I don't have custom recovery.

Anyone have any idea? I get the feeling this phone is truely bricked...
Which ruu did you use to begin with? Was it previously branded?
A generally safe way to recover any phone is to flash the froyo ruu, but you may need a goldcard for that. Start the phone in fastboot mode to get the ruu to work.

The issue is it won't go into fastboot. Just a black screen when I try to turn on the power. The ruu failed and said it couldn't see the phone and to remove the battery and then power on to recover the original rom - that's when it started not working.
I know how to get the fastboot screen but with this phone the screen will not come on.
The ruu i used was: RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
It was branded to t-mobile and was trying to debrand it. I created a goldcard as well. I have all the drivers needed on my PC but my PC can't see the Desire via USB. USB bricked solutions won't work because I can't get the phone to power up - well the buttons on the bottom light up and the phone vibrates but that's it.
Perhaps my first bricked phone?
Al
don't worry. because of the feedback you are getting (buttons lighting up, green charge light and vibrate on startup), it is not a true brick. it should be recoverable.
edit: try this (edited from here)
(Remember to remove PB99IMG.zip from your GoldCard before copying update.zip)
1. Make sure the update.zip (NOT update.zip.zip!) file is on your goldcard and correctly named.
2. Take the battery out first to ensure the phone is powered off. Then hold vol down and press the power button, and hold vol down for about 5 seconds. That will get you into the bootloader even though you can't see it.
3. Press vol down once. This will select recovery.fastboot is already selected
4. Press the power button once. This will start the recovery.this will start fastboot The phone will vibrate briefly.
4a. plug in your desire into your computer. there should be a *ding* sound from the computer recognising it.
4b. Run the .exe you have downloaded. wait for it to finish. TBH I havent installed an ruu from an .exe before. I presume it is pretty straightforward. after this installs you should be able to reboot your device and be away.
5. Wait 20 seconds or so. Then press vol up and the power button and wait a few seconds. You'll now be in system recovery.
6. Press vol down once to select 'apply sdcard:update.zip'.
7. Press the power button once to start the recovery.
8. After a few seconds press the power button once again.

if you don't trust the ruu you have got, I recommend you download a fresh one that suits the screen you have (whether it be slcd or amoled).
Yeah I have tried that but I am downloading another ruu as I type.
The hboot on this phone was 0.75. Can you (or anyone else) recommend a ruu to suit?
Thanks for the input. I'll keep plugging away...

Just make sure you know which screen version you have and find a ruu file that has a higher build number then the one that you have installed, if its lower you will get a bootloader error

Ok. The phone isn't bricked but I still have the black screen.
The update.zip didn't work as per here but I have successfully installed ruu:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed
I still get the BSOD (Black Screen Of Death), though.
Anyone have any thoughts on a ruu I should install or do I need to try a different process? Also, how do I find my screen version? I can't see the screen - is there a prog I can use???
Thanks for the help.

I dont think there is a program to identify them, I read elsewhere that even HTC doesn't have systems to show which IMEIs were shipped with SLCD or AMOLED displays at this time.
ala the SLCD Brick page, have you tried the ruu they provide? http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...1.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe

Now you've got that ROM the next step is to go to 2.2 (which you can do now or wait for the OTA updates to start again). Just make sure you leave your gold card in (if you had to use one in the first place)

You don't load it to your device. Plug phone in with usb to computer. Launch RUU.exe and see if RUU finds the phone. If it does, then follow onscreen instructions.. Make sure phone is powered on when you launch RUU otherwise it will not recognize... Phone can be on white screen and still possibly be recognized depending on exactly what the problem is... If it is recognized follow onscreen instructions and at the end your phone will work again.

If you can get to bootloader an RUU should work for you. Give it a shot.
Here's a link to the thread. RUU link is in first post. Download it and follow the instructions I gave you earlier.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874091
This is the newest RUU though that you flashed the radio from.. Once you get it working you will have to wait on a Root method that works to re-root the phone. Shouldn't be long. You can try an earlier RUU if you want but you'll have to find that in the Rom Sticky Post.

Get a pc36img.zip, place it on the SD card (not in a folder) and start up bootloader. The rest will be taken care of automatically.

Tried to unroot my HTC EVO now its stuck at htc screen. Even if i go into recovery mode it will just get stuck at screen. Im getting frustrated and i dont have warranty on phone. is the phone pretty much done for??
Try running an official RUU to unroot or if you can get into bootloader, you can download a stock PC36IMG file and load it that way.
Links found in this post
i did the pc36 file. it updated my phone, but still stuck at the evo screen. i go to press recovery then goes straight back to htc screen
What PC36IMG file did you use? The one for build 3.70?
The links I posted are for RUUs which are exe files. Connect the phone to the comp and run the RUU.exe file and it should do its thing if the phone can be recognized.
thanks ill try when i get my windows computer running. do you think my phone is bricked??
I'll be honest and say...I'm not an expert and I don't really know if your phone really is bricked or not but I sure hope it isn't! I've seen many threads where people post situations similar to yours and other XDA users say...as long as you can get into bootloader, then no it is not bricked. Just have to find a way to get a stock ROM loaded back on your phone and generally that's through running an RUU.
ok so just install RUU and let it do itz job? just wanna get the s-on somehow so i can take to sprint store.
so im trying to flash it to get the s-on right, but when i click on fastboot it says bootloader then when i press it it goes back to fAstboot. any ideas??
i cant get into bootloader!!
Can you try to download this PC36IMG file HERE. Says you need NAND unlock which you have, hopefully it can installed the rooted ROM with ClockworkMOD recovery, and once that's working try to unroot again. Otherwise...sorry, I'm not sure what else to tell you.
EDIT: How did you install the previous PC36IMG? When you hold VOL DOWN and POWER, do you get to the screen with the Android on skateboards at the bottom?
ok im gonna try it again. I just dont understand when i press fastboot then bootloader why it doesnt go to the black screen. so i can get on my sd card, thats what im not getting... so frustrating!!!
Ok, do you have a microSD card reader of some kind? As long as you can get the file onto the SDcard and once you restart holding VOL DOWN and POWER, it should automatically try to look for the PC36IMG.zip file if you wait for a quick minute or so.
yeah i do. slow computer its still downloading. the first time i did this. it updated and everything. It says do you want to reebot now i said yes. Comes back on and loads to HTC evo 4g screen and just stays there. No sprint boot up or nothing. I might have to use that RUU file if i find someone with a windows computer. I tried that RUU thing at home and it just said USB connection error. oh yeah if i press recovery it just goes to htc screen and thats it!!!
so i updated it. rebooted to htc evo 4g screen and stays there
try this and see if its your same issue forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831915&highlight=bricked
and do a search in development with bricked as the header....
I think if you can get the zip on your sd card you should be ok. Not quite sure by what I have read if you have actually done that part as of yet

I need help repairing my dinc. First, let me apologize for the long post, but I wanted to provide as much detail as possible.
My cousin dropped his phone in water and tried to dry it off. I don't know if he tried to turn it on after drying it off. Also, I don't know what attempts he has made to bring the phone back to life, but he has given up and handed the phone over to me. He figured since I am an IT guy and also do hardware repairs I would figure it out.
This is new to me because I've never owned a Smartphone before. He turned off his service on the dinc and used another Verizon phone he had lying around.
I've research different forums for a fix for the past few days, but nothing has worked. I’ve seen posts with similar symptoms, but in all cases they were able to get more functionality from their phone than mine. Also, my issue is related to water and not from a bad ROM upgrade. Here's a summary of things I've already tried:
Dried the phone out with the rice in Ziploc bag trick for 3 days (phone is completely dried)
Reformatted the micro sd card to fat32
Did a system update
Placed PB31IMG.zip into the root of the sd card
md5 checksum: 31bb1611a0fa8197d447c0438426717e
When I remove or rename the PB31IMG.zip file and hold the down button+power, here is the outcome for the following:
Fastboot: Gives me the following options Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, & Power Dwn
Bootloader takes me back to the main HBoot screen.
Reboot would get me stuck on a continuous loop (stuck on the "HTC Incredible" white screen) and freeze
Reboot Bootloader just takes me back to the Fastboot menu
Power Dwn would do the same thing as the Reboot
Recovery: does the same thing as Reboot; it would freeze at the white "HTC Incredible" screen
Clear Storage: does the same thing as above
Factory Reset: does the same thing as above
Each time it gets stuck at the white HTC Incredible boot up screen, I would have to pull the battery. Hitting/holding the power button doesn't seem to do anything.
From what I've been reading, I don't think the phone is bricked, since it still turns on, has limited functions, & I can get to the HBoot screen. The only thing I haven’t tried is reinstalling the OS (not sure if the OS is included in the PB31IMG.zip file)? Also, I was going to try to reformat the hard drive (just in case the partition is damaged).
The phone has never been rooted and I am not trying to root/unroot the phone... just trying to repair the phone. The phone has the S-ON.
I have uploaded a 10 min. YouTube video so you can see what I'm dealing with. Any help would be much appreciated. If there is anything you want me to try or anything you want to know that I may have left out, please don't hesitate to ask. At this point, I'm willing to try anything.

You need to do an ruu with a PB31IMG.zip.
You can get the ruu here http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22
If you ever want to be able to root you need to use the froyo one as gingerbread cant be rooted if your s-on. Just download, rename exactly PB31IMG.zip, place on your sdcard in no folders, make sure its not connected to a computer, then pull battery and replace then boot into hboot (vol down + power) it should automaticly find the file after a couple secs and then prompt you to press vol up to install. Once its done you will be promptet to reboot , do so and if all is as expected you should boot up normally. Note that the first boot will take a long time so be patient, it may seem like it freezes at the boot animation but give it time.

I ran the RUU program, which took about 10 min to complete. When it finished the update process, it rebooted the dinc, but I'm now stuck on the white htc incredible screen as demonstrated in my video. How long I'm I suppose to wait as this white screen? It seems as if it's frozen, but I'm not sure. Am I missing something?
Should I rerun it or try to run the PB31IMG.zip file? BTW, I grabbed the PB31IMG.zip file from the same site from your link.

No, I haven't. Can you please explain what this is and how it's done? I'm assuming this will pull up the syslog on the phone?

Yes, but let me explain. When I first turned on my phone it would freeze at the white htc incredible screen. The pc would not recognize the device. The HTC Sync program would also not recognize the device.
I pulled the battery and did pushed the down button+power to get the HBoot. Then I would plug in the usb cable and the device is still not recognized. I would have to select the fastboot option, then bootloader a few times before the ruu program can detect my phone. HTC Sync would still not detect my phone.
After the phone is recognized by ruu I ran the program. I can see a black screen on my phone with big white HTC letters. Then I would see a green scan bar running. The ruu program completed and the phone rebooted. I hit the "finished" button on the ruu program and exit.
The phone rebooted and got stuck on the white htc incredible screen. I waited for 15 mins and it's still stuck on the same screen. If you watch my video, you can see exactly what I'm talking about. I've tried re-running the PB31IMG.zip file, but it's not working.
Any other ideas? You think the partition is damaged or the phone is bricked?
Ok I watched the video. My only other sugestion would be to try and root it with unrevoked so you can get the custom recovery, wipe everything from in recovery, and then try flashing a custom rom such as jermains rooted gingerbread+ rom. If that dosent work i would say there is some type of hardware failure.

When I root it with Unrevoked, can I use the online method where I log on to their site or does matter?
Can I still root the phone even though HTC Sync does not recognize my phone? Yeah, someone from another forum suggested it might be a hardware issue from the water. If my cousin turned the phone on while it was still wet, he could have shorted out some circuits on the motherboard. I told him what he should do if it ever happened to him next time.
Thanks for helping me out!

I wasnt aware there was an online method. I'm not sure if unrevoked will work or not but i know you have to uninstall htc sync before you use the downloadable method. Its a pretty simple process and worth a shot. Hardware failure is verry possible though, especially if it was turned on wile still wet. Even if it wasnt turned on wet it probably got droped in the water wile on possibly causing a short right away.

That's my bad; it's like 2am now and I was thinking about something else. I had to download the unrevoked3 program and run it. You're right, I had to uninstall htc sync. I was unable to use the program because it wanted me to enable usb debugging mode, which I am not able to do with my phone in its current state. It could not detect my device.
Someone from another forum stated that after watching my video, he noticed that the image I flashed contained a VZ radio. He said he's heard of cases where users were waiting up to 2 hours in the htc incredible screen before the update is complete. This seems like a very long time, but I'm willing to try.
He wanted me to make sure my phone is fully charged. Then he wants me to run the update in the bootloader and just let it sit. He says it may take up to 2 hours. He said if it doesn't work then it's a hardware related issue caused by the board getting shorted out.
Thanks for all your help!

You need to have adb installed. If you don't, google how and there are many in depth tutorials. Then, once adb is installed, cd to your adb directory in terminal/command prompt and type ./adb logcat.
