Hi all,
Was attempting to root my desire HD and install CM7. Somehow, I managed to screw up the phone. I was using ACE so at some point I had root, and was able to flash different partitions (which is where I screwed up). Here are the facts:
1. Phone boot loops
2. There's no working recovery partition (I manually flashed that when I did have root), and a completely busted system partition
3. the phone is still S-ON (not sure how this stayed this way) - which means I can't fastboot
I tried downloading and installing the stock ROM, and it loaded, and installed - but then neither 'recovery' nor 'factory reset' do anything. Both still lead to boot loops...
From researching the web, I understand that:
1. If I don't have S-OFF - I can't fastboot, and even the PD98img.zip won't install
2. I can't get S-OFF without having a working system first (either via HTC's tools or some root'ing app).
Am I SOL, or does anyone have ideas of what I should try?
thx.
Blake

You haven't tried running an RUU yet? It restores your phone to factory state. Best way is to flash an RUU and start over with the Advanced Ace Hack Kit. I'm pretty sure you didn't read the manual properly and follow it word for word. By RUU I don't mean the PD98IMG.zip, I mean the exe file. Connect your phone to the computer and run the exe.

I tried - but i got the 'failed to communicate with your phone, make sure USB is connected and phone is in debug mode'...As I understand it, running the exe requires that phone to be in a working state. I only have hboot now...
Am I mistaken?
In hboot, press power on fastboot. When FASTBOOT shows up in a red background, then connect it to the computer and try running the RUU.
If that doesn't work download the htc sync (drivers). You need to switch of the antivirus before installing. The program will prompt you before.

Ok - I managed to get the right RUU from shipped-roms, and I used it to flash the ROM. It took a few mins, and then told me that it was successful.
However, I'm still stuck in a boot loop...
Any ideas?
Blake
Thanked you by mistake. Tell me, how long are you waiting after turning on the phone before considering it to be boot looping? For any ROM, the first boot always takes time. Not too long, but a few minutes. In that time it will just show the HTC splash screen. This happens because the dalvik-cache has to be built and the time it takes depends on the number of apps. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you're assuming too soon that it's bootlooping. Wait for some time and see.

The phone boots, I see the white screen with the HTC logo, then a few seconds later, it reboots, and I get the same logo, and so on, and so forth...It just keeps on rebooting, even though the RUU worked.
thx.

This is not true. I have still S-ON (but unlocked via htcdev.com) and I can do fastboot, flash recovery etc. But flash works only from fastboot menu, not from running system or recovery mode.

Hi - I have posted in the leedroid thread with no response so i'm posting a new thread:
I was running leedroid 1.6b - i uninstalled facebook and all was fine. I then at some point yesterday rebooted my phone & it got stuck at the htc logo.
I entered fastboot which works fine, but then tried to enter recovery and once again it got stuck at the htc logo (vibrates a few times and does nothing).
I assumed my recovery image had got corrupted, and so i tried to go through the root process (the second one) again - everything seems to go fine until i try to enter recovery where it still gets stuck at the htc logo.
Can someone assist on what i can do to get recovery working again?
-------- SOLUTION BELOW ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so here are the things i tried that didnt work:
Unrevoked - couldnt run as required you to be in OS
r6 root - Could do step 1 but not step 2 (Hang at htc logo)
Official RUU Exe - Would complete successfully but still hangs at HTC logo
Also tried formatting sdcard, removing ext partitions, removing sim card - none worked.
Finally i tried this and it did work:
1. D/L PB99IMG zip from following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684259
2. Rename to PB99IMG.zip
3. Place on sdcard (i just took the card out & used a usb adapter)
4. Put card in phone & start with vol-down pressed.
The phone will detect the zip & flash.
This worked - now unrooted & ready for rooting again.
Not sure why the PB99IMG method worked when the RUU exe failed, but there you go

Does ADB find your phone?
What hboot do you have?
Do you have a goldcard?
Don't worry, as long as you can access fastboot you're not bricked. Although you must've done something more then uninstalling Facebook. Try flash a new recovery using unrevoked.
How you startet your Phone? (Home+Power dont starts Recovery for me) only with VoldumeDown+Power i can get to Recovery.

I was on hboot 0.75 but when i tried to root again it got changed to 0.80?
I swear all i did was uninstall facebook - even used it for quite a while after that - maybe something else did it.
My phone is unbranded so dont have a goldcard.
Havent tested adb - if it does work what are the steps?
I thought you had to be fully booted to run unrevoked?

As long as adb finds your phone you should be able to run unrevoked. Try that. I'm not sure about this, but you may also be able to run it from fast/hboot.
Remember that to boot into recovery mode on desire you'll need to first boot using vol down + power.
You could also try picking clear storage in fastboot if neither above work, but we can come back to that later.
Hi - I tried unrevoked - it didnt work - i think it wants me to be in the OS before it does anything - all it says when i am in the hboot screen is "waiting for device - plug phone in now and enable usb debugging".
I can get to both fastboot & hboot screens, and also usb works fine in both, so i know the drivers are installed ok on my xp machine.
All it does is show me the htc logo and vibrate a few times when i try to go into the recovery mode.
Is there a way to get unrevoked to do its thing without being in the OS? Or another method?
Also just tried an official RUU - got all the way through the setup fine - when it completed it reboot the phone, and it still gets stuck at the htc boot screen & vibrates

Did you remove HTCFacebook.apk? Or Facebook.apn? HTCFacebook is part of the system and should not be removed..
was your SD partitioned for A2SD+ and is it still? Installing a Rom that does not support A2SD+ with an ext3 will cause bootloops.

Try the following:
Boot your phone while holding vol down.
Wait for the "searching for p99img (or whatever it is) to finish.
Press vol down three times, then click power.
Press vol up to confirm.
Try boot your phone as normal.
Did that work?

Not sure - i did it through titanium backup as the update would not install - guess that is what did it? I'm sure it was the normal app not the htc one though.
Yeah my card does have an ext3 partition - the phone isnt bootlooping though it is getting stuck at the htc logo? Cant even get into recovery to flash another rom.

That's very interesting! I tried to uninstall fb apk with titanium several times and while uninstalling my desire reboots.
So seems that I had some luck with that...but still fb stays
Maybe you uninstalled the htcfb apk.

Anything else i can try? If not i guess i will have to get the phone replaced...

Finally fixed it - solution in post 1
Spoke too soon - was all up and running again but the phone decided to reboot by itself after about 4hrs & now is stuck at the logo again.
Tried the method i used before but no luck this time.
So now rerooting, unrooting, PB99IMG do not work for me - can't boot into OS or into recovery...
Think my phone must be faulty?
I'm facing the same problem as you now. So, do you have any permanent solution so far...?

You don't load it to your device. Plug phone in with usb to computer. Launch RUU.exe and see if RUU finds the phone. If it does, then follow onscreen instructions.. Make sure phone is powered on when you launch RUU otherwise it will not recognize... Phone can be on white screen and still possibly be recognized depending on exactly what the problem is... If it is recognized follow onscreen instructions and at the end your phone will work again.

If you can get to bootloader an RUU should work for you. Give it a shot.
Here's a link to the thread. RUU link is in first post. Download it and follow the instructions I gave you earlier.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874091
This is the newest RUU though that you flashed the radio from.. Once you get it working you will have to wait on a Root method that works to re-root the phone. Shouldn't be long. You can try an earlier RUU if you want but you'll have to find that in the Rom Sticky Post.

Yep, that should work too. I forgot about that as I frequently just RUU'd and then re-rooted, LOL... Good call.
Get a pc36img.zip, place it on the SD card (not in a folder) and start up bootloader. The rest will be taken care of automatically.

Do you either:

have a PCIMG36 on the root of your sdcard, (if you aren't sure then you may not)

Need Help
I know this is an old thread, but I'm working on an old phone. Hopefully some of you guys are still following this.
My father has an EVO 3D that showed up one day stuck on the white HTC screen. The only remedy was to pull the battery. I thought it would be no big deal to just go into the boot menu and either try and run recovery, or at worst do a factory reset. Both of these options failed. I even made a few attempts at trying from the SD card with a ROM or two. So I downloaded the RUU direct from HTC thinking that would finally take care of the problem. But after connecting up in FASTBOOT mode and running the RUU, it eventually fails when the update gets to the point that it's supposed to restart the phone in bootloader mode. Because at that point the phone just restarts to the white HTC logo again, and the software times out telling me that it can't connect to the device. Any help here other than passing me a trash can Thanks in advance!
Good day everyone!

So I have my HTC Desire HD, fully rooted, with Eng-S OFF, Radio OFF, the 1.1.1.1 and all that.
After 2 days running coredroid v.8 phone went crazy and started rebooting (I suspect it was the launchpro app).
I did a full wipe and went to reflash the room but it was not working.
So I tried downgrading again but here's the problem:
Real Problem
Everytime I try to enter the bootloader the
"SD Checking Screen" comes up "Loading...[PD98IMG.zip]"
But my my PD98IMG.zip for some reason is corrupt.
If I choose yes to update SD Zip it fails on step "[4]- Fail-UZ". The rest is ok and in the end syas "Update Fail" Press power to reboot.
The damn thing is that when I reboot this cycle starts again and again! (sd checking....loading...)
If I choose not to update I Still have to reboot which leads me back to the cycle!
Please might community! Tell me how to solve this!
I dont have anywhere else where I could mount my SD Card..
Is there any way to cancel the commands that pushes the HTC to update the zip?
Problem is that the phone is not found on command prompt when this booting begins.
Any ideas??
Best regards everyone,
Joao LUiz

Went and bought an Microsd usb adapter. Plugged the MicroSD, formated, changed the PD98IMG. zip for a new one.
Plugged in the phone the update went through fine. However when I rebooted only got HTC white screen.
I removed the battery to make it reboot again, now in bootloader. And guess?
The freakin thing is asking for the update again!!! God damn it!
As I see it my phone is with a command that keeps telling it to boot the image. Any ideais on how do I cancel this command?

Thanks for the reply darren.
I was trying to run PD98img just to see if it would stop asking for updates.
I did as you suggested but now when I click Recovery I get a black screen with an HTC on it and a red exclamation point inside a triangle.
Before I was getting a SYNC sign like it was looking for my SD card. The sd is running fine on the adapter...oh well...
So, You restored your DHD using a PD98IMG and now after restoration your stuck either at the bootloader or at the white screen with the green HTC logo?
Firstly what PD98IMG did you flash? 1.32.405.6, 1.72.405.6, 2.32.405.6 or other?
Secondly, can you access the stock recovery menu and attempt a factory reset from there? - Remove & reinsert battery, hold Vol Down + Power. You should get a plain menu in blue if I recall with 2-3 options. One should be factory reset/restore. Use volume to navigate & power to enter.

Andy,
Yep my phone updated on PD98IMG and now I'm stuck at bootloader or the white with green logo!
The PD98IMG was 1.32 from this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
I did as you suggested. Clicked factory wipe, it took me to a black screen with the htc phone on it + a big green syncing symbol and at the bottom a meter bar with a MicroSD card logo to the right of it.
It went black after a short time , then the device rebooted back to HTC white screen.
Does it mean it worked? Could it be my SD card ?
Again thank you all for the replies,
I'm going crazy over here!
Plus
Now on bootloader screen it says Hboot USB Plug.
But when I go cmd and type adb shell it says error device not found.
If I try to go into recovery I get the Black screen with red triangle and exclamation point.

Oh great! Now how will I be able to make it S-OFF?
At the bootloader screen it says Ship S-Off.
I was reading at ohter places, apparently I have reverted my recovery to the original.
I need to be able to flash a custom recovery onto the phone. I saw some people used Unrevoked but I pretty sure the software only works on some mobiles and HTC Desire HD is not on the list. Unless HTC Desire CDMA means the Desire HD

What happens when you leave the device to boot normally? Usually the first boot can take upto 5 minutes.
I'm guessing you have already waited that long and that will not be a solution.
IF, and that's a big if, please mind the pun, you still have ENG S-OFF you attempt a fastboot restore. But you do need ENG S-OFF.
EDIT: Ah SHIP S-OFF does no have access to fastboot commands.

I'm able to go to recovery mod. Have wiped both data and cache.
If I run cmd "adb devices" it shows my phone serial number + offline. Also on recovery mod the phone drivers are recognized on windows device manager.
However if I stay on the initial bootloader screen and run "adb devices" it shows no device and the drivers dont recognize my phone.
On the usb devices only shows Android 1.0.
I'm trying to get my phone online so I can run the temp root cmd commands. But it's either offline on recovery or not recognized at all on Bootloader screen. ¬¬"
Since you have cwm recovery, just full wipe and flash a custom ROM on it.

I've tried everytyhing. Flashing Clowork Mod Recovery, updating from update.zip as well clicking on the bat file.
Everywhere I get permission denied, seems like my phone is not letting me do anything. Maybe my goldcard got corrupted in the mess. I'll make a new goldcard and see how it goes.
Ah as well I've noticed this
The reason this all started was because my HTC was in a bootloop. It would load Coredroid, the initial screen would appear then it would reboot and so on.
Now even with no rooms, no sd card etc. If I leave it to boot normally, the HTC White screen will stay on then it will reboot (goes black, phone vibrates) to the same HTC white screen.
So I think it's got something hardware related, I mean it's rebooting even with no rooms.
Oh geez....
Again, thank you all very much for the support! It's been really helpful, thank you for the ideas guys!
How do you full wipe?
Manually or using script?
If using manual method, what are the steps you did?

Darren,
I went to Bootloader > Recovery > Wipe Data. Then I wiped cache as well. Note that my Recovery access is limited. It says Android system recovery 3e. And in yellow at the bottom E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command.
I also did Factory Reset from the Bootloader Screen.
I can't do any script stuff except for Fastboot commands. Even on that I get "failed" status due to my permission denied.
I really cant understand why I cannot seem to flash a new Recovery.
If I use update.zip I get a failed installation at the end.
If I use clockword mod double click on the bat file the process runs, phone reboots like it should and then nothing, still on 3e...
Did you do what this post suggested?
Download the PD98IMG_cwmrecovery.zip file and rename it to PD98IMG.zip. Put it at root and boot in hboot and update.

Will try this right away, sir!!!
Fingers crossed!
Hey everyone,
I have read the various topics with a similar title but none helped.
Here is my problem, I bought a used HTC Desire on eBay. It booted just fine on the first start, then I did a factory reset (from within the Android system menu).
Since then, I'm stuck at the white screen with the green HTC logo. I have tried to get into bootloader mode by removing the battery, holding vol down and power, but it just goes straight to the white screen again.
Also connected the phone to the pc, but adb isn't picking up anything...
Any ideas?
Try Power+Back button.
just got one step further:
I can get into fastboot mode with BACK + POWER. But volume keys doesn't work, is that a known issue that I can solve somehow?

So you bought a Desire with broken volume keys.
Are you s-off?

Then you'll have to flash a RUU to make it work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772499
It's official HTC Firmware. Your phone will boot after this.
So:
1. Install HTC Sync.
2. Download and extract the RUU.exe from the zip (It's somewhere in there)
3. Run the exe while you connect your phone in fastboot (Power+Back)
4. Wait for it to install
5. Boot

Thanks for the advice, I downloaded the 2.3 RUU and it starts the process, sais
rebooting to bootloader
erasing data
sending...
and after ~30 seconds it just shows me a screen that sais "ERROR_UNKNOWN"
On the phone I see a black screen with a silver HTC logo during the process and when I unplug the USB cable after the error it shows the hboot screen that now sais "update failed".
right before the error is shown it display "updating signature"

It only says "Error_Unknown"? No error number, anything?
Weird.
This may be the reason:
Now, that may not sound too bad to some of you, but there's more: the 2.3 RUU update is limited regionally, as well. It's not available to users in Germany, North America, South America, South Korea, or Japan.

You live in Germany, right?
Use this guide then:
Section 2, S-on

yes I am in Germany,
made some progress (or not?)
I noticed that the device was "unlocked", so I did "fastboot oem lock" and it was "relocked".
Then the RUU update went through - nearly. At the very end if failed again and now I am stuck at a black screen with the silver HTC logo and triangles in every corner.
AW: Unable to get into bootloader or recovery mode, stuck at white HTC logo screen

wtf... tried again flashing the 2.3 RUU, this time it worked, YEAY
But now I have a bootloop, device starts, vibrates 1 time, waits for 3 seconds, and then vibrates 7 times. And restarts...
Ok. Tests are done.
According to the screenshot above and the 7 vibrations, you have a radio brick. It's a brick that can hardly be overcome.
The only solution is flashing the RUU and hoping that the phone will eventually boot.
That's why I don't buy second hand phones.
This thread might help:

freecer did it, was able to flash the 2.3 RUU again successfully. But now I'm back at the bootloop, but now, it simply does vibrate once (no more 7 vibrations) and reboots after some seconds.
So what can I do now? RUU flashed successfully, I'm running out of ideas...
and again the freezer did it, put it in, normally started via POWER button, it booted right through into Android.
Well, let's see if it keeps running now or if this overheating issue also exists in normal operation mode...
Thanks so much for you help so far, the freezer hint saved this device and hopefully will make my gf very happy tomorrow
Hold on I thought it was some pvt1 devices that had overheating issues.
Thought it was fixed on your newer ones. Then again I've never had a problem with my pvt1 desire flashed both hboot and find countless times.

it is a PCT3 device.
but the overheating-reboot issue is rendering it useless. I can use it just fine outside (-2° currently) but as soon as I'm inside, boot-loop...
Anything I can do from a hardware perspective to fix that? Sending it in for repair/replacement is not an option, it's simply not worth the cost.
do you think installing a custom rom of any kind might help?

It's a motherboard fault. If you don't send it to repair, you just got yourself an "Ice-Phone", or a very complex paper holder.
i think a custom rom would help a small bit, like the rom in abaaaabbbb63 sig (mildwild redux) because its small and lite unlike a sense rom. therefor it mite not overheat as quick or as often. but thats only a guess. the only dodgy thing is trying to get ur phone s-off or rooted because if ur phone overheats in the middle of the s-off/rooting progress u could brick ur phone. plus charge ur phone using ur computer coz it uses less power and the phone does'nt heat up as much as plugging into the wall.
