OK here's my situation.
I bought the EVO back when it came out, then when 2.2 rolled out through sprint I did the OTA update. Shortly after that, I followed the 2-part video on youtube on rooting it, and I was successful.
I had some problems with the GMail app so I did the second OTA update (knowing I was going to lose root.) So here's my question. Do I need to go back and do the whole 2-part video on rooting my phone again? If so, how do I install the Custom ROM's listed on this site?
I've never did much with my evo until the 2-part rooting method on youtube, and I just followed the instructions.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: when I followed the youtube video, I used Amon Ra recovery. I'm not sure if the latest OTA update affected that or not.
u need to root the phone using the latest method. try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828437
Just use unrevoked 3 one click root very simple
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My security is off, here's what my phone says when I boot into HBOOT:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.97.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.09.01
Aug 19 2010, 14:29:08
But when I go to boot into recovery, I get a picture of a phone with a red exclamation mark next to it (I assume my Amon Ra recovery is either corrupt or missing, thanks to the last OTA update I did on my Evo)
I mean do I need to go through the whole rooting process over again, just as if I received a brand new Evo?
Just run unrevoked again so it can push a recovery image to your phone.

Exactly what he said just run unrevoked 3 that's all there is to it any problem after that is likely an Id10t error

I got it. I actually decided to run Unrevoked before seeing those last 2 posts
The first try of unrevoked didn't work, had to run it a second time, and bingo.
I just installed EViO ROM, and I love it!
Now i have another quick question, say if i want to flash a custom boot animation or another lock screen, I do that exactly the same way as I flashed the ROM, correct?
Thanks for all your help, the members at XDA ROCK!

Yes everything is flashed through recovery. I always wipe cache and dalvik before flashing anything. Make sure you make some nandroid backups before you play around too much so you can recover quickly. Amon RA recovery is recommended over clockwork.
OK I'll install Amon Ra soon, that's what I had previously used in my first rooting experience. I did a Nandroid backup before I installed my first custom ROM, and I believe my radios and everything else are all up-to-date, so I don't think I should have any problems as far as that goes.
EDIT: Now I'm just looking for a stock 2.2 rooted ROM to restore to in case I decide to go back to stock again.

Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post and i need some help. Here's the story.
I rooted my phone a few weeks ago, everything went stunningly easy, and worked great. Clockworkmod recovery was installed (by unrevoked) at this time. While driving home I broke my phone's screen and had to get a replacement phone. Asurion had a phone to me within 18 hours (my word they're fast). I slapped the 16GB SD card from my first phone in and I was off and running.
So I have my new phone with my original 16GB SD card and set it up normally again. I wanted to wait a bit and get it set prior to rooting again. Tonight I rooted the phone with Unrevoked 3.21 as I did before. It went much faster than before. I now have S-Off but clockworkmod recovery is not on my hboot screen and recovery mode doesn't work at all. Just a black screen for about 15 seconds before loading into the OS.
Have I screwed up a one click root? I've tried a few things.
I used droid-life as a guide to help me root.
Phone Stats:
Droid Incredible
Asurion replacement
OS 2.2
radio 2.15.00.07.28
kernel 2.6.32.15-gb7b01d1
build 3.21.605.1 CL231334 release-keys
Although clockworkmod recovery isn't in Hboot the reflash tool still says "Recovery Image: ClockworkMod Recovery" on the bottom. I have tried renaming the clockworkmod folder on the SD card to see if it would create a new one, or boot into clockworkmod recovery after realizing the folder is not there.
I have also tried formatting my SD card and running the reflash tool again. Again no dice, no recovery mode.
I have tried unrevoked 3.21 after every change.
What have I done? what do I do? any suggestions?
Thanks for anybody and everybody's input. I appreciate it. I would like to start flashing roms but really dont want to mess with it if I dont have a recovery option.
-MOJO
Is it a complete download of the unrevoked tool? Sounds almost like the recovery package isn't there. Try redownloading unrevoked and run it again. Do you have root and Superuser app at least? If so, try downloading and running ROM Manager and tell it to flash Clockwork again. Still no dice, try telling it to flash RA recovery. And for the record, which screen do you have?
I wish I knew

thanks for the quick reply I will try that. Yes I have root and the superuser app.
I dont know how to tell which screen I have, but I was wondering the same thing. BoyGeniusReport says its incredibly hard to tell the difference and I haven't found were it says SLED vs AMOLED
Grrrr

Downloaded unrevoked 3.21 straight from unrevoked twice.
Tried the reflashing clockworkmod recovery, no dice.

It's an alternate recovery. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874
It's also the second to the last option in ROM Manager. Flash Alternate Recovery: RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6
I actually like that one better. It was able to format my SD card correctly. I just miss the integration with ROM Manager.
Phew... It worked.
the alternate recovery worked.
now if I want to flash ROMs do I need to know anything in particular before doing so with the AMON_RA recovery tool.
I downloaded the a4d utility that I found when doing a search for AMON_RA on appbrain. It asks if I want to flash my phone to unlock my bootloader (and void my warranty, haha).
do I need to unlock my bootloader before flashing ROM's
I like the sense UI. thats all I have actually used. Is there anything better? what are suggested, STABLE, ROMs/kernels for the DInc? or should I stay "stock 2.2 rooted"?

Uncommon sense with king kernel bfs # 5 is as good or better than stock.
Btw. Hboot only shows recovery, not clockwork recovery. Did you ever try selecting recovery from hboot?

Uncommon sense has some of it removed. Some of it you can remove yourself. It's the only rom I've donated to and had on my phone more than two days.
Just be careful if removing stuff. Some of it has other dependencies. There are guides on how to remove things safely without breaking other functionality.
Also do a backup first. I'm not sure how amon ra works, but it must be in there somewhere.

It is. In the main menu, just like Clockwork
So I definitely have recovery with the amon_RA 1.7.6 alternative recovery with the ROM manager. but from what I have read I can no longer use ROM manager to flash.
Now I have been searching for information/instructions on how to use AMON_RA but have come up short, at least recently written stuff. I can find a ton of information about clockworkmod which I assume is because of Unrevoked 3.21.
PonsAsinorem as you said you miss the integration of ROM manager. I really want to use ROM manager.
I read somewhere in XDA that people were having trouble using clockworkmod and ROM manager and it could be because of a corrupted cache. there were some LIMITED instructions about using ADB to fix it but I wasn't completely understanding them.
I think my problem is spawning from using my old SD card and maybe a corrupted cache. I have made a back up using Amon_RA (actually two).
Does anyone think that completely formatting my SD card (after moving my backups to my MAC) and factory restoring my phone. then reflashed using unrevoked 3.21, or reflashed clockworkmod recovery using rom manager would work to solve my problem with clockworkmod recovery?
I would have backups if it didn't work. I would just have to restore the Amon_RA backup if I screwed anything up or wanted my SD card back... Right?
Thanks for all the help so far.

OK, so I'm a bit of a n00b here, and I need just a quick hand.
I'd flashed Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo a few days ago and was attempting to use metamorph to tweak the battery icon. Ran a Nand backup beforehand. Something went wrong with the metamorph and I was stuck in a bootloop afterwards.
So I hit power and held down on the volume rocker, hoping to get into my Nand.
Instead, it wouldn't let me select anything, went through its own update/recovery process, and now that it's done, I'm back to stock (complete with sprint bloatware) and totally unrooted. I DLed Rom Manager off the market and tried to get into Amon_Ra recovery, but it keeps telling me I don't have permission (thus I deduce I've lost root access.)
Is there anyway I can flash my Nand at this point, or do I need to go back through the rooting process?
Thanks for your help.

To get a recovery on your phone, you need to have root.
To get root need superuser permissions and/or nand unlock
To get nand unlock and superuser permissions you need to go through the rooting process.
If you've used unrevoked 3.21 and have S-OFF. You can flash recoveries and superuser permissions without having to go through any rooting process.
So I guess then what I need to understand is how would I go about flashing the superuser?
edit: at this point I've already gone through the whole rooting process, including unrevokedforever.zip and the additional ENG bootloader. I get into ROM manager, and go to recovery, but the clockworkmod recovery doesn't see my most recent backup. Reflashing to RA recovery, it finds it, but tells me I have to run the recovery via ADB. ???
Pretty sure what happened is that you left a stock pc36img.zip on your sd card, leftover from your rooting process. When you booted into hboot, it loaded it automatically and you must have hit update. Not sure what caused your bootloop though.
Check your sd card, and if theres a pc36img.zip on it, delete it. Look for the superuser app in your app drawer, and also check your hboot to see if you're s-off. If you are in fact back to unrooted stock, you can always run unrevoked to quickly root and then you can restore your nandroid, just make sure you have the same recovery that you used to make the nandroid.

When you go into the loader (Vol Down + Power) does it say S-Off in the first line?
If it does then you still have root and you can flash the custom recovery's .zip and you will be able to load back into recovery.
If you have S-Off read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8285266&postcount=1

Definitely. So now I need to get my microSD card reader and remove it. Can do.
Any idea why both Clockworkmod and Amon_RA are unable to load my backup? Versions for RA should be the same, and I think the same for Clockwork as well.
OK, I deleted PC36IMG.zip, now it just stays stuck in bootloader.
looks like I'm hosed, but here's what I'm learning on Freeza's thread, where I DLed the PC36IMG.zip in the first place:
freeza said:
UPDATE: It appears as though everyone is getting stuck in bootloader after this procedure. You can get out of this by reflashing your current ROM (without wiping) and/or restore a nandroid backup. Some have reported errors when trying to restore a nandroid backup. YMMV
Karadorde has put together a package that works. Read his instructions below:
First and foremost it seems that if you get stuck in the Bootloader (no matter what method you are using) then your Nandroid backups are broken. I don't know that anyone has been able to successfully restore from one of those yet.
The file in the OP allows you to apply just the engineering HBOOT.img (hboot_0.76.2000.img) This works flawlessly for some but not so well for others.
The file in Post 71 and Post 91 allows you to apply a full PC36IMG.zip that contains the engineering HBOOT.img (hboot_0.76.2000.img) This is a fix for some who have gotten stuck in the Bootloader after using the file from the OP. At the same time this has also caused the some of the same issues people were having with getting stuck in the Bootloader from the OP. This file will not downgrade any part of your phone, however, it will wipe the phone. Also it is reported that it broke root on one phone. I believe this only happened to one person, need confirmation on if it happened to multiple.
If you get stuck in the Bootloader you can re-flash your Kernel to fix the issue. Not sure if this works with the stock Kernel or if you have to have a custom Kernel. Looking for feedback on this.
If you get stuck in the Bootloader reflash your current rom. Need feedback on this as well.

Then went to fresh 3.5 and tried to go back to myn from there. I use clockworkmod and recently updated to 3.0.0.0. I have tried flashing the roms in rom manager and by booting up in recovery. At OP: I Clockwork 3.0 appears to have some bugs. Hold on tight.
@aimbdd: You're not a mod, nor did you help at all (in answering the question or telling him what you did). You're actually FAR worse than he is. If you're not going to post something productive, please don't post.

Reading clockworkmods tweets it appears the new clockwork is only for the new hboot and doesn't work with the older hboots. Install amon ra 1.8 and you should be golden. You won't be able to use rom manager after you install aman ra.

First, backup all of your third party apps. Then make sure the rom file and kernel you want to flash is on the root of your SD card. Once those things are accomplished, enter recovery by turning off your device and then while holding the volume down button, press the power button. Once you've entered in recovery, make a nandroid backup of your current setup in case you want to revert back to the way you had your device or in case something goes awry. Afterwards, wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache, dalvik cache and battery stats at least twice each. Do not reboot. Now flash the rom, but do not reboot. If you're not going to use the default kernel, then flash the kernel you plan to use. Make sure it is compatible with the rom and radios associated with the rom. (Your current setup thay you posted shows outdated information. All EVOs should have the froyo update and the newer baseband radios) Afterwards, reboot your device, go into the settings menu and update your profile. Enjoy your new rom.

What recovery are you using?
Call Me Noob
I have no idea what recovery im using if one at all.
Amo Ra. you can install it with Rom Manager app. Get from the market. once you install it open it, on very top it should read (Flash ClockworkMod) click on that, once finish, scroll down and flash (alternate recovery) thats your Amo ra. Flash it at least twice.
Ok i installed that and flashed them and when i go into recovery it still sticks at the exclamation mark
should work. okay re-flash Clockwork Mod again, than reboot into recovery. What method did you use to root your phone?
i have no idea, it was from when the evo just came out. i got it off htcevohacks.com
If you are still s–on, it kinda sounds like you never did the second part of the rooting process. If I remember correctly, toast's original root process was in 2 parts, with the second part coming out a good bit after the first part...so, if you rooted it the first week it came out, you don't have true full root, you have partial root. Look for toast's guide and do the second part. Or you may be able to run unrevoked method.
Make sure that you are rooted before doing anything else to your phone.

Glad I went for the ride, I've learned so much about the android platform this last couple days.
Alright so a while back I used unrevoked on my wifes incredible and it worked just fine. she updated it recently so today I went to reroot and prep to install a new rom. Problem is it failed to get root with the newest unrevoked. Ti backup fails to get root yet mybackup gets it and so does rom manager. I'm trying to get into clockwork through the hboot menu. Maybe I'm doing something wrong by going through there..i tried to backup with cwm through rom manager and it worked (didn't till i flashed the latest recovery but still) but I'd still like to get into cwm for myself not rely on rom manager. I've yet to try to reboot into recovery that way or restore the backup I made as I am at work but regardless..any ideas? I know when things are being ridiculous with the fascinate I can just odin and go from there..is there something along those lines for the dinc? If not what should I do to root the thing..get clockwork again..and flash the new rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.

I can get to HBOOT but from there all i can do is reboot or fast boot, I havent done the factory reset yet but i intend to try. But from hboot I want to get into cwm, or do i get into cwm recovery a different way?
Mind you I havent tried to get into it since flashing the newest cwm through rom manager (or that I remember trying or not..been a hectic past week..im losing my damn mind, grandmother passed away in Anaheim, etc, etc)
also im going to reroot and do a completely different rom, it is stock minus wonky root and launcher pro. I finally convinced the wife to let me modify it.
Ifu don't see recovery option in any hboot option. Like there's no clockwork u should by able to flash clockwork and then a Rom.ican pm you.but if unroot is your objective goto Android dev stickies there's a thread.

thats the thing, I see the recovery option, but everytime I select it, it tried to find a multitude of images, says file doesnt exist on all of them (4 or 5 of them I believe) and sends me back to the main hboot screen.
Suppose that information would have been useful. Again, hectic week lol
use say u have rom manager?
yes, im wondering if I need a stock recovery image since it isnt finding the PBwhaterver.img Any idea where I can get that?
Also probably helpful, I had used unrevoked forever a while back. Im thinking I need to undo those changes and just retry everything.
Thoughts?
Edit: Downloaded a new clockwork recovery image from unrevoked forever wiki, gonna throw it on the SD card and see what happens. HOPEFULLY that will let me into cwr, if not, how do I just put everything back to stock so I can start over?
try that file. get rid of the mlti part should sayPB31IMG. also make sure no other files of the same name are on root of sd.should say update vol up yes wait reboot no see ifu got recovery got newr versions too. also new urevoked have versions without clockwork u prolly used tht one. easy fix tho
alright, gonna give it a shot when I get home in the morning. Wish me luck.
Alright flashing with rom manager and selecting reboot into recovery from there worked just fine. we are in business for now anyways lol.
