First, before you get hammered, this question belongs in Q&A, not the development section.
It sounds interesting and would be cool to see it happen but I don't think it would be easy. Each driver would have to be ported to the phone and such.
Possible but unlikely but who knows? There as some amazing devs out there.

Why do you feel this question belongs in this forum? And like ricsim said, possible but unlikely. Take a lot of work to do such a thing, and the devs seem pretty busy lately, trying to port something like that would post pone their current work.

This might not be too bad of an idea. Have any of you nay-sayers actually used a WP7 device? I would bet no. It's not a phone that could replace my EVO, but the interface is kinda cool. It would be neat to dual boot WP7 - just because. It saves you from having to buy an expensive WP7 to use it infrequently. I think it's a cool idea, but I don't think there is support for it.
I would also love to see this idea come around, more as another ROM for our phones than anything else, just because I would like to try the interface and I like the idea of having Xbox LIVE on my phone, as well as having a choice of OS's, like Sense and AOSP. Maybe someone out there would like to contribute some time to this?
Windows 7, no. The NT kernel is x86/x64.
Windows Phone 7, technically it meets the requirements, but that's what the HD7 and other WP7 phones are for.
Windows Phone 7, of course. The title of this thread is a little off (Sorry OP). And yes, while we could all certainly go buy Windows Phone 7 devices, why would we do so if our EVOs that we already have are more than capable of handling it?
In terms of specs, the Evo meets the requirement. But there is no other way right now to flash a different OS on the Evo like there was in the case of the HD2 booting Android. There is a tablet coming out or is already out that can dual boot Android and WindowsCE6. So we might be able to find something from that if anything comes out of it. But it wouldn't do any good right now even if WP7 was running on the Evo, you need the genuine Windows phone services, which the HD2 doesn't have since it's not a certified Windows 7 phone.
You can flash Ubuntu to the EVO, I would define that as a different OS.
Ubuntu is also a unix based linux OS like Android. Windows 7 Phone isn't. You're not really flashing Ubuntu on there either, you're really just loading it onto the SD card like you would for Android on the HD2. There were and are tools available for WinMo 6.5 to boot linux on that device and other WinMo devices, but nothing like that for Android devices to boot up CE kernels and OS.
Simple answer:
Not going to happen.
Why?
Android is open. The devs can modify the source to tailor it to a device. Windows Mobile and iOS are not.[/thread]
There won't ever be a worthwhile WP7 port unless you can remove the stick from M$'s butt, because as Team DFT put it "Microsoft's Genuine Software check will basically disable all cloud based services like Zune, Marketplace and Xbox Live if the system can't pull a valid key from the handset's motherboard."
Which means, if your device wasn't pre-loaded with WP7, WP7 won't work on your device. Now they have ported it to other phones, and run it, calls, ect. They just can't access the materials that make WP7 what it is.
So you will need to expect to buy and install a mod chip in your Evo to trick a future WP7 port into thinking your phone is a WP7 phone, or you will need to accept the fact that no phone other than a WP7 phone will be able to fully utilize the software.

So I'm wondering what the concensus is. Are we going to see this or not?
The official word is obviously that there will be no upgrade for the HD2, but people seem to have hope in the community here. I'm not much of a dev/hacker to know for sure, so I'm wondering what you guys think...
The issues I'm hearing are:
Hardware buttons
GPU
On-board storage
Upscalling
The hardware buttons are obviously a non-issue. And from what MS is saying, despite not being able to swap out memory cards, SD storage can be used by OEMs to supplement on-board storage. But I dont know about the GPU and upscaling. Are these built in to the HD2 already? Is the upscaling a hardware or software issue? Are these things a deal breaker??
This would be most excellent if so,I just picked up a HD2 last night and even though I am back to edge speed ( which is not a real issue for me,lots of wifi around.) I LOVE THIS PHONE !!!
Man this thing is making me giggle like a school girl.....
I don't see anyone NOT putting it on there, especially when it hits America (If it hasn't already that is)
HOWEVER, i highly doubt you will want to use it. THey are going the iphone route. NO more File explorer and open source and multi tasking. All the things that made WinMO popular are apparently disappearing.
Disappoints me really. I jumped on the Android train. My first PDA was a dell X50

that's what im doing, 4 more days! cannot wait to get my hands on this beast!
All because of $$ !!
M$ want more developer to developes more app and game for WP7S, in order to do that, u need to convince developer that they can make $$ for the app. Currently it is to easy to get craXXk app for WinMo.
M$ learnt the good idea for iPhone by locked down the system so u can only purchase from App Store. By doing these, M$ will stand good chances to complete will iPhone (Gen 4) in the future.
My only wish is : Hopefully M$ don't be hash on XDA, cos i believe XDA will make something interesting from WP7S for HD2 ... i believe.
Althought I'm glad others are showing interest, I was hoping to make this a technical discussion around the facts of whether it can or cannot happen. And maybe at this point the answer is "we dont know." But hopefully we'll get more answers in time...
I think the question is not whether or not the HD2 will receive the upgrade to 7. Officially or unofficially, I think its just a matter of time. May not be as soon as youd like, but I't will get there. Its more a question of how relevant the HD2 will be be the time win7 is made available to it. Also, will there be able to be some kind of dual boot option available. The way 7 is shaping up, I'm not too enthused about only having 7. I would use 7 for gaming, social use, and winMo 6.5 when I'm looking to get my hands dirty.
Is it a Tomtom icon we can see? is the old version or is tomtom already developpe a new one in Sylverlight?
AFAIK that image is simply a skin over the top of WM6.5 rather than WM7s, so it is a current tomtom app

No, that image was published on winmo.nl during the Barcelona unveiling of WP7, long before any WP7 skins were created.
Right now it looks like it was either fake (just an HD2 showing a WP7 picture on its screen) or an early development version of the OS, not destined to ever be released on the HD2.
Winmo.nl claimed the TomTom app worked fine on WP7, possibly because 'tomtom was already preparing their software for WP7'.

It'll probably be iPhone 5g before WP7 will be any threat. iPhone 4g is probably coming out in June/July, a few months before WP7 is even out.
Though the HD2 is a fantastic device and loved by anyone (incl myself) who lays their hands on it, you can't help but feel somewhat bitter that a device of such magnitude is just going to be ANOTHER HTC phone almost solely kept alive by xda-developers.
You can see MS's reasoning. You can love the sheer beauty of the HD2. But Jesus - think of the potential going to waste and how it comes across to consumers who hear 'hey, your device is outdated already'. Consumers that haven't even got the device available in their country yet.
One word - Flash. THAT'S reason enough to be at least a little pissed off as an HD2 user.
A joke, it is - but in XDA I trust.
unfortunately, HD2 doen't support WM 7, WM7 only support 3 solid buttons, no more, no less....
HD2 has 5 solid buttons, so...give up to upgrade to WM 7
If the HD2 has a WP7 test build running on it somewhere at HTC and it gets leaked the HD2 should easily get an unofficial upgrade but if that doesn't happen it won't be easy.

camera hardware button is also a requirement...
an interesting key i found on my T-Mobile HD2 HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd\WM7KeybdLayout.
Very strange indeed
I'm pretty sure hardware keys would be irrellivant to getting this on the phone.
My understanding of the key requirements are based upon the chassis version been used with WP7. I think these are basically stipulated purely for the user experience Microsoft are trying to give and not software limitations.

It'd be nice thats for sure... too bad there has been NO sign of something like this at all... and this hypothetical article was written in October of 09 :S I can only imagine how bulky a phone that big would be with a keyboard. I'd still do the upgrade though!
Here's hoping the next flagship winmo phone they come out with has a flash for the camera on top of a sliding keyboard as well. I cant believe they got rid of the flash from the touch pro. Stupid stupid stupid.
Actually, theres been very recent speculation about this device appearing. Of course it wont be exactly like the picture, but HTC are working on a HD2 + Keyboard variant.
Seems like a pretty safe assumption that they'll release a new high end slider this year, just like they have every other year.
so that brings us to the summer of 2010 for the HD2 Pro release.

I'd say the HD2 is gonna be tmobiles flagship phone for a while. No other phone really comes close to it, except the TP2. And thats just a scaled down HD2 with a slide out. I would say the evo 4 would be a good candidate but with the 3 hours of battery life I don't think we can put it in the same group. Yes a couple friends got one and are shocked they have to start recharging on their lunch hour.

Why would any manufacturer release a new killer Windows Mobile phone at this point? Windows mobile is a dead platform. Windows Phone 7 and Android will be getting the high end hardware. A company would be moronic to release a killer device on a dead platform a mere couple of months before the launch of its replacement.

I don't understand your post, unless you meant Windows 7 PPC w/slideout.
The TP2 is a Windows PPC with slide out keyboard.
Don't hold your breath
Now that MS has gone to WM7 I do not expect anyone to make any new models that run WM 6.x. I think the TP2 is the last of the breed.
However, maybe people can adapt WM7 hardware to run a version of WM6.5.x. But I doubt it - the drivers would have to be re-written.
The main reason I've stayed with WM is all the applications I've accumulated over the years. Since WM 7 is NOT backwards compatible with previous WM software, I think that I may try a different OS this time.
Plus, others have posted that WM 7 is derived from Windows Vista. Who wants that?
I would have expected them to use Windows 7 as a base, but I imagine when they started WM 7 they only had Vista.
It´s really not important what OS will have as long as it´s a great device with REAL keyboard!

You do understand android is open source and ios is not.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
i was just going to say this.
the reason why you see WinMo and Ios phones running android and you dont see much with android phones running iOS and WinMo isnt entirely because of the backlash from fanboys.
a lot of it has to do witht he fact that Android is open source so it is much easier to get it up and running on other devices. to be able to modify a non open source OS and get it running on android phones is much more difficult and would take a lot of time and effort. think about it this way.
for the EVO we have a team working on a base android rom (CM) and they still dont have it all working. to make iOS or WinMo fully functioning would be significantly more work then it will take to even get CM fully functioning.
The reason Android is available to run on iPhone is because:
1) There is actually a reason to... iPhone owners realized that Android was better and thus there was demand for it.
2) Android OS is a much more efficient (thus easier to port) OS. It is designed to be flexible... where as iOS is not.
so... given that you have wonderful freedom with your Android, why would you choose to imprison yourself with an inferior OS?

Ask anybody that's been involved with the Hackintosh scene for awhile what all is involved in getting a non open source OS running on hardware it wasn't designed for. I'm sure it's no walk in the park.

From what I remember, Microsoft has reported atleast 3 different times stating that there will be no release of WP7 on the HD2. While the HD2 has been considered a test device to build WP7, it is not worth their time to build a fully funtional build on what they might call an old device. There is also the fact that Microsoft has certain restrictions on what devices will support WP7, and the HD2 does not qualify under these restrictions. Since it is Microsoft that designated these restricitons, HTC would be unable to release an official build of WP7 even if they wanted to.
The HTC HD7 is almost identical to the HD2 in terms of hardware. If anything, I would think the best unofficial build would come from this device.
I also don't doubt that there will be a build of WP7 for the HD2 in the very near future

M$ was thinking we would take way our HD2, to buy a new WP7s device......Crasy company.

I don't miss WM one bit, it was okay I had an t-mobile wing and a HTC tytn II. The Tytn had a much better processor and it was pretty good, but the user experience was still pretty bad.
Simplier times, I'm not so sure. The developers make it so easy to root and install CWM, and it's awesome we can make backups and restore like nothing happened. But once you have CWM installed, you can just download a rom and install it really easy, the android community has come a long way and everything is so easy and safe now.

I don't miss windows mobile but I miss my HD2 , I had three of them and to tell you the truth if I had one I would sell this phone in a heartbeat
Windows Mobile 6.5 and below... please dont remind me of that. Terrible UI and slow as molasses. I am quite interested in WP7 though, and will need to try it one of these days.

Definitely miss my hd2, but not with windows on it..
OMG I love my HD2 I ended up giving it to my dad. I still miss it, one of the best phone ever produced (never had WM on then always Android) and I had ICS/ MIUI ROM. When I think about the liberty that I had (awesome ROM selection) with the choice of any ROMs I hate SGS 2.
The HD2 was a bad ass phone..they havent made a phone design as good as that since..i feel like if WM kept pace with androids surge..theyd a been allright..WM8 looks promosing..supposedly the htc one x is similar in design to the HD2 but no removable battery or micro sd and i think the latter is the deal breaker for me, i need my sd cards on the go and all cloud storages have **** for upload speeds capped...i just got the gs2 so im gonna enjoy it for a bit bcuz all my previous phones have been HTC..GS3 looks promising...i just need to read newbie swctions in android terminology n il be allright

Yeah but that was the beauty of the HD2, you can basically have anything you want. They need to make an updated version of the HD2 with a quad core and 12 MP camera, I'd buy that tomorrow
I miss a few features from windows mobile like free tethering without hacking etc. but playing with my HD2 the browser was just garbage.

I like to pretend anything below Windows 6.5 ever existed.
My gf got me into using android with her G1. I was a big Nokia fan at the time N95/N900 era and the HTC Fuze before that, lol, but the possibilities of Android got me hard unlike the iPhone which at the time I thought was a joke but it managed to heat up faster than a junkies spoon....I guess so many dumb people.
I got my Nexus One and never looked back. My mom and GF had WP7 phones and loved them. My mom hated the iPhone after getting used to WP7 but my GF eventually came back to the android side and felt it was missing too many things she got used to with android. She hated having to use zune to load music and no file manager.
I used WP7 and like it but as a power user neither WP7 or Apple could satisfy my thirst. If I wasn't using android I would need a Maemo phone or some other OS. I honestly miss my N900 though, but I bet if I used it today I would be like ewwwww.
Still have my HD2. It has no SIM or sdcard in it and is stock WM 6.5 or whatever the latest stock was for it. I had planned on selling or trading it but it's hard to let go of.
That thing has run everything from WM 6.5x to any Android you can think of AND WP7 with full Live activation et al.
I hope this is a joke topic. A very bad one at that! Window phones are a dead horse kinda like the Microsoft HD DVD Video disc! Lol. Once you go Android you never go back!
