Debranding Help - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have got my new Desire and have been trying to remove the ugly T-Mobile branding from my phone. I have used Unrevoked and flashed a new ROM successfully. However, I still have the T-Mobile splash screen (not boot screen). I understand to modify this I have to be S-OFF, but my bootloader says I am S-ON. Can I still change the splash via the recovery menu? Or is more hacking required? Also, does anyone have the stock HTC boot screen (and sound) in a recovery-flashable zip format.
Thanks guys!

bumping for fun and profit.

24/11 - Finally, an unlocked SPL for Hero!

I've had this unlocked Hero SPL for a while now, and it's super useful for flashing unsigned updates and cool stuff like custom splashes. Unfortunately i've not been able to distribute it... until now!
WARNING
A PROBLEM FLASHING THE SPL CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE - as such, proceed with caution. Don't flash this unless you need it, flash at your own risk, flash only to a GSM Hero and do not interrupt the flashing process (which happens on the first reboot after applying the zip). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
The SPL, version 1.76.2007, is in the usual update zip format.

Searching is hard so why not get someone else to do it
Thanks modaco I will try it after christmas, just to be sure that my phone won't be bricked till I learn some things better
Nice!
Thanks Paul (and any other eventual leakers not mentioned).
Now I can get rid of my hacked SPL
do we copy this zip file to sd card and update through recovery image? like other radio, rom and theme applying?
Would I be right in thinking I need to CID unlock my Orange Hero (rooted) before I can flash an unlocked SPL? Or is that the whole point of an unlocked SPL?
Not planning on using phone on another network at the moment, just want rid of all locks.
I remember way back when, on my Kaiser, I needed to run Kaiserunlocker.exe when hardSPL'd it, but can't remember the exact procedure.
Many thanks

There should be no need for that, and long as you have rooted phone and a custom recovery you should be able to flash it.
You're confusing CID lock with SIM lock. The SIM lock is what limits your phone to a specific network.
CID lock is software enforced "label" that is used to limit what software can be installed on your phone.
For example: Your Orange branded phone is identical hardware-wise to my sim-unlocked Nordic Hero. However the phones have different CID values. Assuming you havn't rooted it you would be stuck to just running Orange approved ROMs on it. No other ROM would be allowed to be installed even if your hardware is identical and can run it.
CID is a non-issue once the phone is rooted and you got a custom recovery on it that allow us to install whatever we want since it ignores CID.
I'm not that versed in the SIM lock function, but from what I've seen it seems you can get some code to disable it from within Android (look around on the forum for instructions), or there is the serial cable method (explained in a sticky on this forum).
Hope that explains it.
just flashed and flashed modaco startup image too. its so cool. thnx a lot Paul. btw. how to make startup images? cheers

Generic ROM on a Virgin Desire

Okay, so my friend decided to 'debrand' his desire. It was a Virgin branded phone with the 1.15.405.4 CL155070 firmware installed. First he followed the debranding instructions on modaco.com to install the Generic ROM yet for some reason the Virgin splash screen remained. So I gave him a link to the 1.15.405.3 ROM I used (before .4 had come out) and the same thing, the Virgin splash screen remained.
I'm confused since my own HTC had an Orange splash screen and when I debranded it that was replaced with the 'Quietly Brilliant' splash screen.
I can get my head round the fact that the Virgin ROM is pretty much the Generic ROM, but can someone explain the splash screen situation to me please?
I am the aforementioned friend. Everything went through as expected. Would love to shed some light on this.
Cheers!
Shameless bump as we've rolled down a few pages, anyone have any ideas?
I have a virgin branded desire and I was able to replace my virgin media boot logo, but I rooted my phone to be able to do it.
The process is pretty simple, you need to be in the "recovery menu" (if you read up on how to root your phone, you'll find out how to get into this menu, it's the same menu you go into to flash rooted roms) and just flash a new boot image.zip from the SD card.
Boot logo changing instructions here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=672339
Not fussed about the actual branding of it, as their is very minimal branding from Virgin anyway. I'm more interested in being able to update with HTC's generic firmwares.

Im on generic rom coming from Virgin, If their were any softwarte updates i would try but their is not, so can't. lol.
Everytime i check it says i already have the latest firmware.
im guessing it will be ok, but obviously you WILL lose root if ya update.
Yep my theory (by numbers) is that virgin use the generic firmware so it will update at the same time as HTC.. the virgin splash screen must be stored deeper in root.
Its just strange how my orange splash was replaced with the quietly brilliant one when I flashed it with the generic.

it's happened to me too
i think that all brand rom have virgin boot animation inside, and it depend on the device imei number.so at first boot (while showing htc logo on white background) it determine which boot animation to load.
The rooted updates just don't update the boot image. That's all. You can update it manually (see my post above), but it doesn't matter, the logo is separate from the firmware, so if you flash the "generic" firmware, even though you'll still have the VM logo, you'll get the "generic" updates.
So did anyone manage to get the OTA to 2.2 once they put generic 1.21 firmware onto their virgin desires?? It worked fine for my orange debranded desire using the same method but my mates Virgin branded will not see the 2.2 OTA update like mine did???
My phone was already rooted with clockworkmod so I flashed it by hand. I was being too nervous when this thread was started. Rooting was a good thing.
Any of the unbranded RUUs will get rid of the branding. Custom ROMs (that you apply as zip files) won't update certain parts of the phone.

[Q] Changing the pre-boot animation screen.

I've got an O2 Ireland-branded HTC Desire.
This means when I turn it on, the first thing you see is a big O2 logo. After a few seconds this disappears and changes to the the boot animation.
Flashing ROMs changes the boot animation, but it doesn't affect this initial logo.
Does anyone know how to change this logo?
I'm assuming it's stored on some part of the phone which is... hard to change? Is it part of HBOOT? Can it be replaced with the unbranded version?
if your phone is rooted then the easiest way would be to install root explorer and copy and paste the bootanimation zip file you want to use over the original one. or you can buy bootanimation changer app from market and do it that way............sudeki300
I know how to change the boot animation. But that's not the problem. What I'm trying to change is the logo that appears *before* the boot animation. You know, the thing you see the instant you turn your phone on.

Hi, I was in this case, the best way is to re-flash the droid with an original (you will have the HTC logo in place of your operator), after that you can use a custom rom.
Does anyone know which part exactly of the offical HTC update would replace this logo? Is it HBOOT? SPL? Something else?
Could this be extracted from the HTC update and flashed separately?
the only way i know of is to debrand the phone by rooting it and flashing a custom rom. or just get hold of a generic htc desire official rom and flash that....................sudeki300

the file in question is bootanimation.zip. It's not simple to extract it and re-compile the rom; 2 solutions:
- use a kitchen to create your own rom.
- try to replace bootanimation by another one, I try it since few days without success, I'm working on it because the HTC logo is no so sexy.
The original rom from HTC is RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865
Not that i know the answer, but just to clear things up:
-he is rooted.
-he has changed bootanimation.zip.
He is talking about the logo before bootanimation. Normally 'HTC' in green, in his case 'O2' (I guess in red).
The question is: where is that 'pre-bootanimation-logo' stored and possibly how to change it?
Flashing rom or flashing bootscreenanimation.zip does not work.

You will have to flash a stock rom and put up with the htc logo, as it stands we cannot flash the splash screen seperately because we do not have an unlocked spl yet

Hello sir - are you saying that I could get rid of the ugly Telstra boot splash screen and replace it with a stock HTC splash screen if I flashed a factory ROM? (Yes, I am talking about the boot splash, and NOT the boot animation).
Anything would be preferable to the splash of a carrier I am not even using.
If so, would I need to re-root, or would I have to de-root first, then re-root?

Is there any new solutions for that ?

I'm answering only so you don't waste a lot more time looking, and probably won't otherwise get an answer.
I have the same phone (A8183 from Telstra) and that initial logo cannot currently be changed by anyone due to that part of the ROM not being able to be unlocked.
Even rooting your phone and flashing any rom currently available doesn't grant access to this splash screen.
Sorry... not what you wanted to hear I'm sure but it's currently the case.

I have read a little about this fabled S-OFF (security off?). How close are we, and will it be as simple as being able to replace a PNG once we have access to another part of the filesystem?

This is relevant to my interests... So am I right in thinking this is the process?
- get OTA 2.2 ROM for Desire and flash using current process? (Do I need to change radio?)
- Has this now unrooted me? Do I need to re-root? Is it possible?
- Reapply (say) Leedroid 2.x and the original HTC splash screen stays?
Cheers - Neil G
I rooted my Telstra Desire using r6-desire-root-alt.zip a few months ago, and that changed the initial boot splash to the default HTC splash.. so it can be done.

It's almost ready for public release.
You have to convert it to a specific format, but yeah.
It's not a filesystem, its a raw part of the nand
with a rgb framebuffer format.
Some generic ruu zips contain splash1.
Check inside the zip to be sure.
That is the green-on-white HTC logo.

Hrm.. I'm not sure if I'm doing the same as you guys, but I also bought the Telstra model (outright/unlocked from jb hifi), and since then i've put a number of other roms on there, and they've changed the bootup logo to the stock HTC one
(i'm currently using open desire, but originally i was using r3 from modaco - though that was android 2.1)

Thanks everyone - this is all great news... When I got my Desire I couldn't find anyone that was able to say the splash could be changed (either to HTC default or to a custom image)...
Sounds like S-OFF is close so I'll just wait it out.

When I had a Hero, I was able to change the initial boot image after i installed an engineering spl (obtained from modaco)
Not sure if the same method would apply for s-off on the desire.
But the criteria for the boot image then was, obtain an image you like, crop it to an exact pixel size, and covert to 365rgb format
then using fastboot on your pc use the command fastboot flash splash1
(bearing in mind it's been a while, and it's late, I may be remembering incorrectly)
But if the process turns out to be similar for the desire, you should be able to easily create any boot image you wish, as long as you follow the process carefully and correctly. An image with the wrong pixel size when converted and flash will not display correctly at all.
Hope that helps.

Wow... Could you please point to the method you used to get S-OFF?

[Q] Remove tmobile bootscreen?

I got a t-mobile branded DHD, and had no problems with root s-off etc. and im currently running revolution 2.0.11 ROM.
But the tmobile bootscreen is still there. Is there any possibility to remove it?
I already tried to replace the bootanimation.zip in /data/local/. So first I thought that worked because when fastboot is turned on the new bootanimation shows up on restart.
But when I go into CWM or when fastboot is turned off the tmobile logo is still showing up.
I also flashed Kernel and Radio but still no effect.
Does anyone know where this logo is stored or how it can be removed?

Yes it's on the /splash2 partition. To nuke it you need a new splash.img. You can get one from extracting from an ruu or there is a thread for custom splash screen in the themes section of the forum.
You also need eng hboot s-off not radio s-off then you can boot to fastboot and do "fastboot flash splash2 splash.img"
-----
Someone Swyped my idea.
like mox said it's not the boot animation, its the splash, you need to have eng s-off, then find the image you want as a splash, you need to convert the .bmp to an .img, then you can flash it from fastboot using the command "fastboot flash splash1 xxxxxx.img"
thx for your fast answers!
how do i convert a bmp to img? i guess it wont work by just changing the file ending?
im so glad i wont have to see that t-mobile logo anymore now my DHD is completely liberated from all this provider crap
