24/11 - Finally, an unlocked SPL for Hero! - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

I've had this unlocked Hero SPL for a while now, and it's super useful for flashing unsigned updates and cool stuff like custom splashes. Unfortunately i've not been able to distribute it... until now!
WARNING
A PROBLEM FLASHING THE SPL CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE - as such, proceed with caution. Don't flash this unless you need it, flash at your own risk, flash only to a GSM Hero and do not interrupt the flashing process (which happens on the first reboot after applying the zip). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
The SPL, version 1.76.2007, is in the usual update zip format.

Enjoy!

What exactly is the SPL and what benefits will we get from flashing it?

Searching is hard so why not get someone else to do it

Thanks modaco I will try it after christmas, just to be sure that my phone won't be bricked till I learn some things better

Nice!
Thanks Paul (and any other eventual leakers not mentioned).
Now I can get rid of my hacked SPL

do we copy this zip file to sd card and update through recovery image? like other radio, rom and theme applying?

Would I be right in thinking I need to CID unlock my Orange Hero (rooted) before I can flash an unlocked SPL? Or is that the whole point of an unlocked SPL?
Not planning on using phone on another network at the moment, just want rid of all locks.
I remember way back when, on my Kaiser, I needed to run Kaiserunlocker.exe when hardSPL'd it, but can't remember the exact procedure.
Many thanks
Phone:
UK Orange Hero (rooted)

There should be no need for that, and long as you have rooted phone and a custom recovery you should be able to flash it.
You're confusing CID lock with SIM lock. The SIM lock is what limits your phone to a specific network.
CID lock is software enforced "label" that is used to limit what software can be installed on your phone.
For example: Your Orange branded phone is identical hardware-wise to my sim-unlocked Nordic Hero. However the phones have different CID values. Assuming you havn't rooted it you would be stuck to just running Orange approved ROMs on it. No other ROM would be allowed to be installed even if your hardware is identical and can run it.
CID is a non-issue once the phone is rooted and you got a custom recovery on it that allow us to install whatever we want since it ignores CID.
I'm not that versed in the SIM lock function, but from what I've seen it seems you can get some code to disable it from within Android (look around on the forum for instructions), or there is the serial cable method (explained in a sticky on this forum).
Hope that explains it.

just flashed and flashed modaco startup image too. its so cool. thnx a lot Paul. btw. how to make startup images? cheers

Help:Orange debranded need to update

i bought my htc hero from ebay,
it was orange branded, the seller debranded it & sold
there;s no orange services in india aswell,
it works fine with my carrier
now when i try to uprgare from 1.76.61.3 to 2.73.405.38 it fails,
i've done everything as required & suggested here
i kinda lack knowledge about the unbranding stuff
will i need to unlock again after updating?
or once unlocked its free for updating or flashing custom rom anytime
please sort me out of this
If I were you, I would avoid using an RUU to update your phone, and use one of Modaco's custom ROMs. You will find instructions in this forum.
Regards,
Dave
i dont want custom rom as of now,
please help me regarding my question,,please!!
Well, for starters, 405 is the generic HTC build, which presumably won't pass the CID checks on an Orange Hero (regardless of its status vis-a-vis branding). Therefore, I'd suggest trying the Orange 2.73 update if you *really* want to use an RUU, but there are plenty of "custom" ROMs that are simply the carrier ROMs packed in an "update.zip" format.
Personally, I'd never use an RUU as there's always the possibility that they will be updated to close the loopholes that allow custom ROMs to be flashed - which is exactly what has occurred with the latest official T-Mobile update!
Regards,
Dave
cheers!!
i've no way then to agree to you
just one question again?
flashing a custom rom,is there any change getting it locked again,
as throughout the forum i'm just seeing unlocking orange hero is not a task of ease,
i know i might b sounding stupid but i'm not sure of this stuffs
winmo flashing was different case imo
edit: please provide me link to customroms.zip
There seems to be an issue with unlocking Orange Heros for some users, but you've already said that yours works fine with a different carrier so you clearly don't have this issue and yours is unlocked already.
For ROMs, see http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291942/09-10-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/
You will also need to replace your recovery image with one that permits updating via zip files. See http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291486/25-08-installing-the-patched-recovery-image-on-your-device-permanently/
Note that you don't actually need to permanently flash the recovery image if you don't wish to. You can boot of it using the fastboot command, make a nandroid backup, and then apply an update zip file.
Regards,
Dave
cheers mate,thanks a lot
i'll go through your links & will try out!!
cheers foxmeister
finally my orange hero can taste lemon

Creating nandroid backup with locked bootloader?

Hi!
So what I want to do is only to create a nandroid backup. I dont want to install a custom ROM and I dont want to root my phone. So I tried to boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2, but got a "FAILED: (remote: not allowed)". I have figured out that this is because I have a locked bootloader.
Now for my question. I would prefer not to go through the complicated process of creating a gold card. Is it enough to change my SPL? Im not really sure what a bootloader is... it feels as if it should be enough to change my SPL, but I want to be sure before I try it. Any information or link to good information would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
edit: Also, another question: what kind of check is it that I run into when I fail loading the recovery image? Is it the CID? Or a SIM-lock?
Well, from what I have learned it wont help to change my SPL. The question is, must I root my phone to get a nandroid backup? One question that have risen is, what is a bootloader? Is it the same thing as an SPL? Any help would be a real lifesaver!
to create a nandroid backup you need the custom recovery image, period.
not sure what you are talking about bootloader and spl, that stuff is not related to the recovery image. to change the spl you need the custom recovery aswell.
SPL ≠ recovery ≠ bootloader.
Bootloader is an actual part of the software, that loads the OS.
recovery, like the Amon Ra 1.5.2. recovery, is a toolkit to flash and manage your hardware / software. Something like a BIOS in a regular computer, with added ability to partition, flash other parts of the phone, or like you wanted: to backup the ROM entirely.
SPL is something that operates before the bootloader: Secondary Program loader; the small lead-in to it. Hero phones however (tested with the GSM version, test sample: 2 phones) have no limitation so no need for special SPL's for most roms / recovery's. Using a non updated or not most recently updated HTC RUU, you can use Flashrec 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 to get the Amon RA recovery effortless.
I believe, correct me if I'm wrong: That the CID lock, which is the SIM-lock, is on SPL level. However, this should not interfere with one of the other three. It simply allows you (or rather denies) to use a certain SIM card and register on certain networks.
Disclaimer: I'm not an Android guru. I only recently looked into this matter. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But for some reason I cant make a nandroid backup with my phone at its current state, so something must be done.

Thank you very much!
Correct me if Im wrong, but does not Flashrec actually flash the recovery on my phone? Preferable I would like to just load it once to create a nandroid-backup, so nothing is changed on the phone.
Also, if I want to do it on the most recent HTC RUU, must I root the phone then? Or is there some other way?
Another question: Heros that are produced today, do they have this lastest HTC RUU that flashrec does not work on?
Cheers,
1: you can always fastboot into recovery, without flashing it
2: flashrec exploits a bug in 2.6.27 kernel. It's not linked to RUU.

Hi! Just to clarify: I want to fastboot into a custom recovery that allows nandroid. This isnt always possible without some effort, is it? Because I failed with some error message on my first attempts, as described in my first post.
Anyhow, I tried to use flashrec and it worked. However, it flashed the recovery image on my computer. This is not what I wanted. I would also like an easy solution that works for the version av Hero that flashrec does not work for.
I then tried to change the SPL as described in to "update-hero-hboot-1.76.2007-signed". After this I tried running "fastboot boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img". This worked. However, I am unsure if it worked because I changed SPL or becuase I already had changed the recovery image with flashrec. Could someone clarify this for me? I really want to understand this before I dare help my friends with their phones.

this is correct. from some softwarelevel (2.73.110.26?) upwards you can not fastboot a recovery image.

in fact it is too late for that. you can try to get the original recovery image and flash it over the custom image, but i don't see the benefit for that.

AFAIK fastbooting of the recovery works now because you already have the custom recovery image (which you got through flashrec), so yes, flashing the spl was unnecessary.
tbh i wouldn't mess with that stuff more, you have a good setup now, any unnecessary flashing (especially of the spl) brings the danger of bricking your phone...

You are wrong!
CID Lock ≠ SIM Lock
The CID lock (carrier id) prevents you from flashing a different carriers ROM to your device (i.e. a ROM with a different CID). The SIM lock prevents you from using a different carriers SIM in your device.

[Q] Orange Desire Unroot help

Hey guys, I am selling my trusty desire now, it has served me well but its time has come...
If anyone would like to buy it off me, they are welcome to, message me, I'm looking for 110.
I am struggling a lot to get started on the unrooting process. I've been reading through posts, topics, on here and modaco and I'm getting more and more confused
Here are the facts.
Its a limited edition black version released by orange. It was locked. Unrooted using unrEVOked method.
Its currently on Oxygen.
BaseBand Version states 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
HBOOT is cm7r2
HBOOT version says its 6.93.1002
I tried to follow this but the nand link is dead.
I don't have the original backup I made, I must have deleted it somewhere down the line... silly me
I want to revert it to a stock GBB rom, no bloatware, and unlocked. I have the unlock code for my phone, but is it possible to revert it to a stock version?
I looked at this list to find the correct RUU, which one do I use?
Please, somebody help me out here! I have no clue what to do!
Sorry about all this...
First make sure to flash the bravo_stock bootloader, then the downgrader.
You need to make a goldcard and flash the WWE RUU, because Orange didn't release any.

I tried the FroYo RUU first, used the process in your thread that is stickied at the top of this forum (the rom.zip extraction) but that just stuck on the splash screen. So I went on the HTC Dev site and used the same method to extract the Gingerbread update and that worked no probs. Thank you so much for your help!

[Q] Desire HD in bootloop obscure problem

Hello all!
I may be new to XDA, but i lurk a lot... And over the years this is the first time i've ever needed to post.
Right.. So today i bought an "HTC Desire HD" or 'Ace'
It was on Froyo (2.1?) S-ON and hboot 0.85 or something
I tried using AAHK - Which is fine, I've used it before successfully on my other DHD.
This time it was upgrading/downgrading a radio, error'd and quit.
It then restarted and bootloooped.
I tried Factory Restore did nothing
I then tried using many and various RUU's but i always get Error 131 or Error 190
I tried making a GoldCard to boot the phone still nothing
I also tried the PD98IMG.zip in the SD card (Tried with GoldCard too) Still Error 131
GoldCard does work as have tested it on another phone.
Currently sat staring at HBOOT wondering what the hell i can do to get it too switch back on!
The phone is locked to Orange UK with S-ON
The file that i believe to fix my phone is called "RUU-Ace-Orange-UK.18" something, but it just doesn't exist. I've searched all of google and only found dead links.
Just a little motivation, I'll donate to whom ever provides the fix for my phone my old Xperia Mini e10i! Thanks
AAHK is retired, and the server hosting the files it needs has been pulled. Without S-Off you can't flash radios. Are you just trying to root? If so, you can unlock your bootloader, flash a recovery, and flash a rooted ROM from there. You can't flash radios, but you can flash custom ROMs. The link in my signature has more detailed guides.
EDIT: but you will first need to update your hboot.

EDIT: I found the file for RUU Ace Orange UK (My phone is on Orange), but it's not finding my phone. And when i took the ROM out of it, and put onto simcard it's giving me an Incorrect Model ID
I believe that because your hboot is too old, you need to create a gold card to flash a RUU that supports hboot unlock. How to do that is beyond the scope of my knowledge, and due to the fact that the guy who used to handle all this stuff (glevitan) is no longer active here, you may just need to hope someone else shows up. You could try to look through his posts for that info.

So my phone is dead then D;
Basically you need to create a Goldcard and upgrade your bootloader.
I also have a Orange DHD and i am S-Off'd using another methord but the difference is that i have sense 3.0.
But due to your phones CID being ORANG001 you'll need the goldcard as there is no orange RUU firmware only HTC generic firmware.

[Q] Telus HTC will not downgrade for S-OFF

Ok I am new to XDA, I have and HTC Desire HD on Gingerbread 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 it was originally on the telus nework but was unlocked before we bought it, I have very basic knowledge ... a lot of work on my Samsung Tab 10.1 and Samsung Infuse ... both have been very customized, This HTC is the worst thing i have attempted ... I have run just about every program out there, now im trying to downgrade the bootloader (Yes, its unlocked) all I get are errors when trying to downgrade .... I live with a "developer"(he's a tool) he says I need s-off to be able to load roms (I like NIGHTLY builds had a lot of luck with them) and when i attempt to put a new rom on it all installs normally but then it never leaves the HTC Screen it will sit there for hours with nothing .... I have just about every htc dev tool i have found I made sure to read every result on google for this issue and nothing .... any questions just let me know Im always around Internet ... any help would be appreciated greatly.... up until this phone this forum has given me everything I need to know you guys are amazing,
Sam
If your boot loader is unlocked you can flash custom ROMs; you will just need to fastboot flash the ROM zip's boot.img each time. To do that read my signature. You don't need S-Off to flash ROMs. You can't run RUUs when your bootloader is unlocked. AAHK is retired, so S-Off must be done manually now.
