Please see title. Does Microsoft's ToS allow them in the marketplace, like with Android's Marketplace or are they banned like in the iOS App Store?
Seems like WP7 is considerably more optimized than Android, and should be able to give beter performance.
If an emulator falls under "Unauthorized use of another entity‟s intellectual property, including but not limited to: software, music, art, and other copyrighted, trademarked or patented materials or trade secrets." then it's not allowed on the marketplace.
You can read the doc at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=183220
Heh, I expected some sort of vague, far-reaching rule like that. So basically it's up to Microsoft's interpretation.
Thanks for the help.
so what happens if, someone develops an app or game or whatever and it doesn't get accepted into the market. Is there going to be or is there already some kind of 3rd party market (similar to Cydia, Installer etc.) for Win Mobile 7?
There is no side loading allowed right now. If you are a registered developer you can load apps on your phone without going through the marketplace but a developer account costs $99 per year and only allows 5 phones.
Of course there's the option of jail breaking the phone but who knows when that's going to happen.

I'm pretty sure it was reduced to 3 I haven't checked lately though because we only need 2 at my company.
Since you don't have access to the native API I think it would be hard to make an emulator in Silverlight or XNA.
I haven't signed up yet so you may be right.

Once WP7 is jailbroken, we might start to see custom ringtones, emulator, tethering, and maybe a lot more. However, this is just pure speculation of mine. I am sure by the end of November(by the time USA gets WP7) we will have something to sideload apps etc.

Ive spoken to a few reps from HTC and Samsung, they all say side loading will be available so i dont see why not for emulators (but not right now ofcourse... *tear*)

Maybe hard, but not impossible. There is already a C64 emulator written in Silverlight available. http://silverlightc64.codeplex.com/
XNA might also be a good choice to write more powerful emulators.

It is only 3 devices. Also, if you are a college student, you can get a developer account for free.

1. Register with Dreamspark.com
2. Validate your college identity
3. Register with windowsphone.create.msdn.com (be sure to select student account to avoid the fee)
4. Submit a dummy WP6.5 application to get the identity verification email from GeoTrust. (dummy application is only needed for student accounts)
5. If you pass GeoTrust's test on your personal information, you will then have your account verified shortly. (mine was the next morning)
All of the verification has to be done in order to enable developer devices. I have yet to receive my HTC HD7, but the section says that I have 3 device registrations available to me.
This whole process took about 2 hours for me to complete.

Really? Because I just tried side-loading an app into my Samsung SGH-I917, using the Zune software, and it didn't work at all. Are you sure those reps knew what they were talking about?

AFAIK sideloading is available through Visual Studio with unlocked developer phones (e.g. you have to have a developer account and then register your phone there).
Ignore the reps. They have no idea how development on WP7 works.

Agreed. Samsng told me the same story when in fact it's only possible on developers registered devices. TBH though, the registration fee isn't really that big a deal - release one (good) $.99 app and it'll pay for itself fairly quickly - especially now when the marketplace is still 'small'.
They should be allowed now based on this article here http://news.cnet.com/8301-27076_3-20021948-248.html

That doesn't change what is allowed in the store, simply WHO can submit.
Hi
I thought this may be useful to our gurus in development. I am sorry if it is wrong place to post.
Is this a way to unlock CE 6.0 of Windows Phone 7? This I have seen in endgadget. This brings the native CE explorer in Zune. can we use this to bring file explorer in WP7?
Links:
http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/download-openzdk-applications/54495-liberate-explorer-zune-hd.html
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/01/liberate-for-the-zune-hd-unlocks-hidden-windows-ce-potential/
Thanks,
Ravi
I can't find the source for that exact project (if you have a link, please post it), but I've spent a lot of time looking at the OpenZDK exploit source code, trying to adapt it to WP7.
There are a couple problems. The first is that you need to be able to install an app on the phone in order to get the exploit to work. Zune already allows you to install third-party apps, so the only problem they had was how to break out of the XNA/managed/C# jail. Then they can distribute the breakout as an executable, and anyone can run it. That won't work on WP7 because the only way to install a third-party app is if you have a developer license and the sourcecode. Or you can download it from the app store, but obviously Microsoft isn't going to allow exploits onto the store (they even have automated checking for the kind of exploit they have over at Zuneboards).
The second problem is even if you were able to run random apps on WP7, the exploit still wouldn't work. Microsoft has gotten a lot more serious about security on WP7, and they've closed off all the easy hacks like that (as far as I can tell, of course I'll keep looking). They didn't take security so seriously on WP7, and accidentally gave developers access to an unsafe memcpy(). In WP7 they have a much more robust security model, and closed that off. Which is sad.
I haven't been able to get pInvoke to work on WP7, or even use pointers. You can get the compiler to generate unsafe code, but the runtime on the phone crashes when it comes to any pointer. pInvoke might theoretically work, it's possible I've just been using it wrong, but I've tried a lot of different things and haven't gotten it to work.
Oh yeah, I found the announcement here:
http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zu...-your-zune-new-version-includes-keyboard.html
Says it's built on openZDK, which means it is using the memcpy() exploit, and my last post wasn't completely off

I am really sorry, because most of the things you said, i'm not understanding, because I am not a professional developer or for that not even near to that area of coding (am a Pharmacist... my highest knoweldge is little HTML coding).
I am wondering is this will help in any way to access file system in WP7 and build an file explorer kind of app or can we install Totalchrom or resco file explorer kind of app??? using this can we enable bluetooth ftp or internet file download kind of options?
Thanks
lol ya, I guess I should have started with the executive summary. In short, my assessment is no, it doesn't help, because Windows Phone 7 is too different. I really wish it did help.

+1, unfortunately this won't help us at all.
Ok, this may sound a little stupid but please bear with me....
I'm a student, so I have a ".edu" email address which allowed me to sign up for a free dev account.
Although I'm on a Mac I'm downloading parallels desktop so I can get zune software.
From what I understood from reading these forums...I can use the dev tools and unlock my device with Zune?
Is this essentially the same as using Chevron unlocker?
I can't use Chevron Unlocker because I have a HTC Arrive that has the NoDo update already applied...but if I use the above methods, it would be the same...no?
Yes, as far as I am aware.
I am also a student in the uk with an .ac.uk email
I have signed up and my account is started being activated today, will let you know! I am on NoDo too
I also have a .edu account, so this means I can sign up as a developer and get the official unlock code? Would I actually have to do any developing for them to keep my account open?
I don't have NoDo yet but will want to unlock it once it's available (AT&T branded Focus).
This would be interesting because it say's I can have up to 3 registered devices under my Dev Account.
I personally just created it so I could unlock my NoDo Arrive, but I might actually try at creating some apps...I wonder if it's really that hard
its a little more complicated than what it first seems, but nothing too hard.
Sign up through dreamspark, that gets you your account.
To dev unlock the phone you use the windows phone tools that you get through dreamspark, but it wont let you unlock it untill you have activated your developer account through geotrust
To do this on a student account you have to submit and application to microsoft first. I just created a basic dice roller, there are guides on the internet for how to make this app, it only took me two hours to do using the guide, and 1 day after submitting the app to microsoft I got an email from geotrust asking me to validate my account.
To validate you need to fill in the form with a photocopy of your driver licence or passport and email/fax it to them, they then tell microsoft all is good, and your account is activated
But yeh, if your a student, then its definetly worth doing, because you will effectively be "jailbroken" but in a completely legit microsoft are happy way.
The major problem with an actual developer unlock, is there is a limit on the number of applications you can side-load at the same time - 3 for student accounts, 10 for individual/corporate accounts, if I remember correctly. Makes it difficult to use them for homebrew - I know I had more than 10 homebrew applications together.

So if we have a student developer account we have to create an app first? Exactly what guide did you use?
I have "ZERO" coding experience, even though I do dabble in web development...is it hard to do? I'm not asking someone to hold my hand, just point me in the general direction.
Isn't there a "hack" available on these forums that allows you to "sideload" more than the limits?
I mean essentially a person could use the free Dev Account to unlock their device, then use the registry hack (available on these forums) to allow more than the limit for sideloading....
...or am I missing something?
Yup there is a hack somewhere, I might give it ago, but TBH, im happy to install the reg editor do the edits and unistall it, then do the same for ringtones and unistall it and so on, and just keep 3 that I really need.
After a bit of googling, it seems it might be even simpler...
You still need to have the Dev tools download from dreamspark, but someone posted that all you need to do is this...
Create a new project.
Build the project.
Look in the bin directory that was created.
Find the .xap.
Then submit that

So even though it's a "shell" app (empty app) and it would get rejected by AppHub...all that really matters is that you submit something for GeoTrust to send you the verification email???
I'm interested in this aswell. I've just updated to nodo.
I'm currently studying computer science at uni and tempted to do a WP7 app for my final year or in my spare time.
Developer Unlock is the same thing as what Chevron does.
For students that are interested, Microsoft provides the Dreamspark program where they give students access to free software, development tools and WP7 developer registration

Exactly. That's all you need. Once you submit it you'll just get an email from "GeoTrust" (Hotmail marked it as spam), and then you'll be on your way.
If you like in a country were Marketplace isn't available yet it complicates things a bit.
Even if you get a student account tied to your swedish live-account(like I did) you can't access the Marketplace. But you can still submit apps and get them published with that account!
The only solution here is to get a UK/USA live-account and then jailbreak your phone.
So when NoDo gets released I have to choose between running my own apps or run apps from the Marketplace.
The live account on your phone, doesnt have to match the live account of your developer account as far as I am aware.
My phone is now Dev unlocked and on No-Do.
If you install advance config,it can make it so you can sideload as many apps as you want
Do you think there should be a tut for doing this?
I was thinking of creating one because, as of now, this is the only option to "unlock" our devices.
Ok...I have everything installed but when I "build" the app and submit it to Apphub, it just gives me an exception out of range error...
Any insight?

It's pretty simple - register your student email with dreamspark
submit an app (doesn't even have to work) to get geotrust to start the identity process
when you verify your identity wait 2 business day
You now have the option to have 3 devices that can be unlocked
For the respective device, go and edit the registry to increase the app loading limit to unlimited (student has I think 3) and you're done
Legit chevron. unlocked device for sideloading. I'll be getting my brother to do it for his phone as well as his school too! Although I can see an impending rape of this...
It's also pretty profitable...
my country is not in the list box, singapore is the closest one, im from indonesia, any suggestion?

I just spent 2 hours to figure out the tools and built a quote of the day app. Just submitted it. Will wait for Geotrust to contact me.
Well although many might abuse it, it will expose students to the platform. MS has really good tools. I am not a computer major, but I managed to build an app in 2 hours. I am quite exited about my app..and I will definitely read more about the tools and try few more things.
PS: now I need to buy a windows phone device :-D

nop they are not, they are similair but different.
I dont think the beta is coming as soon as they said

Rats...... but thanks for the update~
The update is indeed for paid and registered mango beta testers. So you do not only have to have a paid account, but you also need to be registered for beta testing Mango.
Further more, if you are such developer and you upgrade to Mango, be aware that there are new limitations to sideloading! Many homebrew tools and OEM tools won't be possible to sideload anymore.
When the moment is there that the update is available (not tomorrow), and you do decide to upgrade, I really want to ask everyone to capture the traffic during the update-process with Wireshark. If we have as much captures as possible, we can possibly create our own updater, like Chris Walsh did with NoDo. But we do need as much captures as possible to see which phones get which rom-packages. We should avoid half updates like in the original tool from Chris Walsh.
If you have a capture of the update, please post here.
Thanks,

I think they'll do something similar to the XBox Dashboard Previews, meaning that ultimately you'll be able to install mango preview on any device, but they'll enable Windows Live sign-in only for registered devices, server side.
Unfortunately Microsoft has always been *****y about these preview things.

I'm no expert in Wireshark. I know how to use it for my own purposes. So this is what I would do, but if someone else has additional suggestions, feel free to help. The updates are over standard http, not https, so that makes it easier.
- Connect your phone to your computer and wait for Zune to be ready with sync.
- Download and start Wireshark.
- Select the network-interface you want to log (to be sure keep only one network-interface enabled, just to be sure you'll capture the correct interface).
- To be sure you capture the traffic from the phone too, go to menu Edit / Preferences. Select User Interface / Capture. And enable option Capture packets in Promiscuous Mode.
- To filter all unwanted data type this in the Filter textbox: http && !tcp.analysis.out_of_order && !tcp.analysis.retransmission
- Start update with Zune.
- When the update is ready, stop the capture and save it to a file.
To test if this works, do the above and use Internet Explorer on your phone. You should see the traffic in Wireshark.

Yes read those, it does not specifically says student accounts wont get it. Brandon watson also tweeted "@arnehelseth Every developer matters. Every. Single. One. Deep breath everyone". Don't know if this means something and is in the right context or not.
The articles just say it will be released to developer unlocked apphub account, which you can normally get by paying 99$ (they dont speak about student unlocks in particular).
"Neowin has received multiple independent tips that the beta will be made available for all devices through the MSDN Create hub for those with developer accounts, on June 22/23, with Microsoft set to make the announcement sometime during the next 24 hours. The beta will not be restricted to "favorite" developers but will be generally available to anyone with a paid subscription, and will be able to be loaded on any of the production devices."
Yes it indicates paid subscription, however does not really rule out student subscriptions since they are pretty much equal to MS. I dont know if we have to take these words literally or if its quickly written.
"The software giant will also offer beta bits for developers to load directly onto their devices, reports Neowin. Mango ROMs will be made available to existing Windows Phone developers via Microsoft’s App Hub development program. Access to the developer program is charged at $99 per year."
Students have free access to the App Hub development program.
I could not find where you need to sign up for the beta, have not read a mention about this. I could not find it in these sources.
You are probably right though that its only for paid subscriptions, since its easier to check who is a ginuine dev. I just wondered since I have not seen a clear "No to student account" post so I was not really sure about what to believe. Thank you for the clearification.
All sources I read stated that you need to have a paid registration. So it does not say 'no students' but students don't pay, so I guess that rules it out.
About the registered Mango beta tester, I don't see it right now, but I'm sure I've read that.
Anyway, we'll wait and see. Speculating now is not of much use.

Ok. That would be cool. But I have to stress again: If you upgrade to Mango, be aware that there are new limitations to sideloading! Many homebrew tools and OEM tools won't be possible to sideload anymore. So if that is a problem for you, then you shouldn't upgrade. What would be interesting to know is, if you have such software that uses native code (like WP7 Root Tools, TouchXplorer, Screencam, etc) already on your phone, will it still be possible to use it after the upgrade?? And.. will the ChevronWP7 unlock survive the upgrade if you have to "prevent relock tweak" applied??

Yes I know. Thats what I wonder as well. Since we could use OEM apps added trough the marketplace. So upgrading with these apps in place might work. Ill also make a few zune backups so I can roll back just in case.
If roottools still works we might be able to set the prevent relock again. Im wondering about the sideload limit, because thats the most annoying thing for me. 3 is not much to sideload and I like to keep the apps Im developing on my phone to test them on the road.
Well Im trying not to get my hopes up for Mango anytime soon, but if its for students also Ill give it a shot. And I can maybe PM you before, if you can think of some things you want me to test out for you.
I can still sidle load and my phone is still interop unlocked but neither my registry editor nor my advanced configuration editor work. Way to go HTC and MS, pat your selves on the back. I pay $99 dollars a year to have my phone unlocked and to develop apps but I can't even develop useful apps because APIs and restrictions, I can't customize my phone with out hacks, nothing! And to top it all off the phone has very limited functionality. What is MS thinking? I'm seriously thinking about jumping ship after being a loyal Windows Mobile supporter from the very begging. It use to make me sick to think about how flooded the market is with Android phones and now I know why. I can't even come on here and vent my frustrations or voice my opinions without someone getting offended or warned like I'm some child. Granted that all phones have their fails but not as many as this phone, I wish Windows Mobile was still around, imagine a world with no having to have an Windows live account or no complicated Zune, imagine just being able to do what you want or need to do without any limitations or restrictions. Imagine being able to laugh at Android and iPhone users. I honestly don't see Windows Phone 8 being any better at all. Say what you want, lash out at me with your fan boy comments, report me to your MOD but no matter what you say or do at this rate WP will fail.
what is the radio driver version , is it 5.71??
well u cant blame anyone, WP7 is more secure than IOS.
thats a good thing right?
The purpose of paying $99 per year is to develop applications and publish them to the app store.
Being able to sideload for anything other than testing was just a side benefit.
If all you wanted was to side load apps, the ChevRon utility would have been a much better deal. One time fee verses yearly and 10% the cost.
Surprised that the radio drivers are to blame. Unless there was a flaw in them that was being exploited to make the editor.
It is pretty annoying that you can't directly programatically alter the registry.
But, I believe the provisioning methods still work. Just write a C# app that will provision a file. Then have the app generate an xml provisioning string to alter the registry and apply it.
There are ways to read the registry doing the same thing.
I can probably find a link in the Windows Phone 7 development section on how to do this.
I will update with a link if I find something.
Link for an HTC ProvXML importer and Reg to Prov XML convertor: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907169&highlight=registry
Try searching that forum for ProvXML. There probably are examples. Serach is temporarily disabled. It always around this time of day for about 20 to 30 minutes.
I was afraid of this. The HTC driver updates may have been to v2 and that breaks the interop-unlock ability (such as allowing ACT and Reg Editors to run). This is known and mentioned by Heathcliff.

They just fixed an exploit.
Of course it's good to have your own device unlocked, but if Microsoft or HTC wanted you to modify the registry they would have released that feature natively.
For example LG has a native application to do this on their Windows Phones.
I interop unlocked my girlfriend's Optimus 7 the next day she got it in 1-2 mins.
what has the radio got to do with this?
will downgrading radio help then?
I know, it's my fault for being stupid and accepting the update, it's a little faster but I noticed it drains my battery much quicker and it disabled my reg exploits. to be honest I thought it was the keyboard fix but the keyboard seems to be getting worse. Microsoft is not what it use to be, Steve Jobs was right, MS is not original and always steal Apples ideas, why if the thing that made WM better is what is diving Androids success. I went to the T-Mobile store and was tempted to switch but walked out and have not decided yet but I just give up on WP this year if MS doesn't stop being so Communist like.

Unfortunately I don't know how to work with ProvXML's. I will check out your link, thanks. do you by any chance know how to change the dark background color back to black using this method?
So you mean to tell me that Windows Phone is actually more secure than the iPhone? God all mighty!! I seriously hope Windows 8 is not as lame as Windows Phone.

I just read the thread you sent me and it says that the new drivers also disable this method too.
To the OP, they also fixed a problem, If you ran connection setup with your phone in CDMA mode, it would kill 3G and the only real way to get it back was to hard reset the phone. It also broke those apps too.
To note, I manually installed 8107(last weekend, 3 days before vzw's release) and it did break Advanced Config (could not add more colors but, only had 3-4 extra onces) but, I am still able to sideload as I need. So, I'm not sure if it was the firmware that broke it...
I don't know what the big deal is with MS not letting us to simply personalize our phones? I mean really what is wrong with changing a notification tone, background color or tile color? If they really don't want anyone hacking the phone then simply give us those options. In every update instead of giving us simple features and options that we want all they do is secure the damn phone down even more It's almost like Microsoft wants to fail. Who wants to pay for a phone that is dictated to the point to where you can't even do that? As much as I hate to admit it; Android is coming up more and more when I think about my options.

I guess it really comes down to what you can do. Opening up the phone, opens it to hack software to run. So, it opens a world of phones with pirated software on it with nothing MS can do it about it. Not everyone will go this route but, there are people who will not buy anything, and that kills the marketplace and vendors who will add to the marketplace.
As I always say, Pirates will always Pirate, block them and they'll find another way around it. BUT with blocking it makes honest people have a harder time to use their devices or software.
I personally just want to customize my phone and use all the home brew apps but, sad to say they will try to block the honest people just to attempt to stop the pirates...
Back to the subject on hand...
So, Connection setup no longer works (I get a Invalid sim if I go to GSM mode or in CDMA mode, Carrer is not in the database), is it possable to get a older version to sideload that would enable registry edits again ?

I had that problem before, I had to toggle airplane mode and WIFI back and forth until it took.

The registry being locked down is less to do with piracy than control.
Code for the Windows Phone 7 was not a complete rewrite of the OS. They did reuse much of the old Windows Phone 6.5. They might have reviewed each piece and modified most, but they did reuse code. If they give you or developers control of the registry, then the entire device could be put into a state that would make nothing work. Or worse, your phone could be made to do just about anything in the background without your knowledge.
It's one thing to not allow programmers to access it. It's another to stop users from doing it intentionally. Any user doing it themself, knows the risks. And you can always reset the phone.
This latest lockdown might spur more interest in creating custom ROMs. Not sure if it is even possible yet for things like the Titan 2 and the new Nokia phones. But, this is the site to find out or find people doing it.
Your right I don't think it's possible at least not for the Trophy or CDMA phones at the moment, I guess we are just stuck at the state of sucks. Either way MS isn't making any money with their strategy at all the hold like 1% of the market; if it weren't for their PC sales they would have already went under.

Microsoft has alot more products as well. SQL Server, Visual Studio (professionals don't use the express versions), Exchange Server, Office, XBox 360, msdn subscriptions, Skype, etc.
Microsoft makes money on all HTC and Samsung Android sales. Somewhere between $10 to $15 for each Samsung Android Phone and somewhere around $5 to $10 for HTC Android phone from patent licensing.
So, every Android sold helps Microsoft. Hopefully they use those dollars to improve Windows Phone 7.
This is actually the real reason that Microsoft can afford to deliver things a little late and still be OK.
They have a ton of cash flowing in all the time and the competition financially supports them.
I'm guessing that there is still a way using provisioning to affect the registry. When exchange servers push policies down, I thought they did that through provisioning. If exchange can do this, then there should be another way as well.
It's also how custom ringtones were created prior to Mango. It would create a xap to create a program that would write a ringtone file using provisioning. Something similar should be doable for the registry. Doing it this way would require you to use a computer to deploy the changes, but you should be able to make them.
Thaks guys for your feed back and support. If anyone knows a way that I can change my background back to default #FF00000 black now that the registry option is gone; please let me know, I will dontae becuse I have lookd at some Android phones and to be honest they are always pluged in and charging and the only other opption is the iPhone
Hmm.. was about to update and then cancelled it when I read this. Does it add tethering? but since it still lets us sideload... I kind of want to update, I don't do any registry stuff and i can always hard reset to interop unlock again right?

No it actually does nothing other that updates your radio's firmware and blocks exploits, worth less update unless you travel out of the country. This was lame on HTC and Verizon's part. I hate Verizon, MS should just stop doing business with them.
