Are emulators allowed in the WP7 marketplace? - Windows Phone 7 Software Development

Please see title. Does Microsoft's ToS allow them in the marketplace, like with Android's Marketplace or are they banned like in the iOS App Store?
Seems like WP7 is considerably more optimized than Android, and should be able to give beter performance.

If an emulator falls under "Unauthorized use of another entity‟s intellectual property, including but not limited to: software, music, art, and other copyrighted, trademarked or patented materials or trade secrets." then it's not allowed on the marketplace.
You can read the doc at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=183220

Heh, I expected some sort of vague, far-reaching rule like that. So basically it's up to Microsoft's interpretation.
Thanks for the help.

so what happens if, someone develops an app or game or whatever and it doesn't get accepted into the market. Is there going to be or is there already some kind of 3rd party market (similar to Cydia, Installer etc.) for Win Mobile 7?

There is no side loading allowed right now. If you are a registered developer you can load apps on your phone without going through the marketplace but a developer account costs $99 per year and only allows 5 phones.
Of course there's the option of jail breaking the phone but who knows when that's going to happen.

I'm pretty sure it was reduced to 3 I haven't checked lately though because we only need 2 at my company.

Since you don't have access to the native API I think it would be hard to make an emulator in Silverlight or XNA.

I haven't signed up yet so you may be right.

Once WP7 is jailbroken, we might start to see custom ringtones, emulator, tethering, and maybe a lot more. However, this is just pure speculation of mine. I am sure by the end of November(by the time USA gets WP7) we will have something to sideload apps etc.

Ive spoken to a few reps from HTC and Samsung, they all say side loading will be available so i dont see why not for emulators (but not right now ofcourse... *tear*)

Maybe hard, but not impossible. There is already a C64 emulator written in Silverlight available. http://silverlightc64.codeplex.com/
XNA might also be a good choice to write more powerful emulators.

1. Register with Dreamspark.com
2. Validate your college identity
3. Register with windowsphone.create.msdn.com (be sure to select student account to avoid the fee)
4. Submit a dummy WP6.5 application to get the identity verification email from GeoTrust. (dummy application is only needed for student accounts)
5. If you pass GeoTrust's test on your personal information, you will then have your account verified shortly. (mine was the next morning)
All of the verification has to be done in order to enable developer devices. I have yet to receive my HTC HD7, but the section says that I have 3 device registrations available to me.
This whole process took about 2 hours for me to complete.

Really? Because I just tried side-loading an app into my Samsung SGH-I917, using the Zune software, and it didn't work at all. Are you sure those reps knew what they were talking about?

AFAIK sideloading is available through Visual Studio with unlocked developer phones (e.g. you have to have a developer account and then register your phone there).

Ignore the reps. They have no idea how development on WP7 works.

Agreed. Samsng told me the same story when in fact it's only possible on developers registered devices. TBH though, the registration fee isn't really that big a deal - release one (good) $.99 app and it'll pay for itself fairly quickly - especially now when the marketplace is still 'small'.

They should be allowed now based on this article here http://news.cnet.com/8301-27076_3-20021948-248.html

Microsoft can remotely revoke app licenses

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/17/windows-phone-marketplace-can-remotely-revoke-app-licenses/
This is the one thing I hate the most about Apple and their iPhone and now Microsoft are doing the same.
They will be able to revoke any app licenses from the Marketplace. They can basically control what you have on your phone and if for some reason they decide they don't like a particular app? License Revoked...
...remember the marketplace protection?
Hopefully, it'll keep the bulls**t apps to a minimum. I hope MS doesn't take some moral high-road though

This sort of Amazonian chicanery is why I don't buy anything from the marketplace (I do use it for freeware). I buy direct from developers. The difference is, that won't be an option for WP7S.

Actually it is inherit in the OS since atleast 6.5, and has nothing do with the marketplace (though I'm sure it ads another level). http://www.focusoft.biz/2009/09/18/...hone-and-android-with-its-own-app-kill-switch
Though I recall a dicussion regarding platform security and this remote kill as far back as the original Orange SPV, the first ever Microsoft smartphone.
Though Android and iPhone also have this. So what platform you going to move to?
I guess maybe a rooted and heavily modified Android?

You're wrong, it is about marketplace applications. They can't kill an application on 6.5 that hasn't rec'd marketplace DRM, or even know it exists on your handheld for that matter.
Android is capable of sideloading, the problem is I'm not sure there is any real market for apps outside their marketplace. That you technically can go outside their central store doesn't mean there's a useful selection there to choose from. On winmo of course, the culture was such you could almost always go direct to the developer, or at least to a 3rd party marketplace even after MS got their central store. I won't be getting rid of my TP2 any time soon, but when I do I'll be looking for the least restrictive DRM among other things. I know DRM has never prevented piracy and only punishes customers, and I'll always do as little as possible to reward that kind of behaviour from companies. It's usually a "lessor evil" analysis.
WinMo has had a app killswitch in it for a very long time. It's used by Exchange/Mobile Device Manager to enforce application policies on the phones, e.g. prevent employees from installing anything other than what came on the phone.
I moved this thread that has nothing at all to do with software development to the more general forum.
Software development would be more like, How do I access the functions, and how is Microsoft implementing and applying these.

copy & paste officially coming

an official statement from Redmond itself
Windows Phone 7 Series will not initially offer copy and paste; instead, we try to solve the most common uses for copy and paste via single-tap action. For example, people often want to take an address and view it on a map, highlight a term in the browser and do a search or copy a phone number to make a call. Instead of the user manually doing a copy and paste in these scenarios, we recognize those situations automatically and make them happen with just one touch. In our early testing people have been pleased with this approach, but we're always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/19/microsoft-windows-phone-7-series-will-not-initially-offer-copy/
so what do you guys think now??
So, in other words, copy & paste is officially NOT coming.
I think that this is just PR bull**** which restates what was said at MIX - no copy and paste, and a lame attempt to present smartlinking (which is undoubtedly great stuff) as a solution to this. Saying that something will be done "over time" is equivalent to saying nothing. They don't even specifically say that copy/paste will be done "over time", it's just a vague "our feature set will improve". Of course it will. It just doesn't answer the question.
I frankly don't understand how anyone can buy this as an answer.
In any case, now that PR department took control of the issue, we'll never know anything about it until it happens (which may be 1 week, 3 years after release, or never).

They didn't say even this much, you're imagining it because they worded it this way.
if u look at pass history of these companies, when it says a feature is not needed they are really saying is they wont have it available so we will say its not needed till we have it ready.
by the comment they have made they will at some point add copy and paste.
here are some companies that have said stuff like this:
APPLE =
copy and paste is not needed.
ipods users dont need to watch movies as they only use it for music.
ipod users dont need games as they only use it for music.
Sony =
playstation 3 does not need dual shock in there pads as most people dont want it.
motion games are gimicks.

To bad the media these days runs articles about how unsure Android apps are, and why people should never install apps from outside the trusted market (read: Google Market).
At least Microsoft offers the ability to have five free apps on the marketplace per year. This should cover the hole you otherwise would used 3rd part source installations for.
Also I'm sure they'll offer some business plan, for in-house distribution. Wait and see
Well I am not a developer (yet?) and I still want to install whatever apps I want and not be controlled.
Windows Mobile was a better product that the iPhone but was losing because it was underadvertised, then MS goes and takes everything they were doing right and undoes it...

[Q] Want to develop for Windows Phone 7

Let me give some background. I know the very basics of hacking. That's it, not much more. I know how to root Android phones, install homebrew on WebOS, and I have tweaked Blackberry software, installed new os', just basic stuff like that. I have never built an app but I want to learn how to develop applications for Windows Phone 7 as this will be my next phone. Any advice? I went to the site and they have the tools there, I was just looking for any pre-reading I should do, or any advice from those already doing it.
Thanks
Download the free developer tools and play. Expression Blend is pretty easy and made for more visually-oriented people vs. hardcore coders.
The catch is that you can't deploy your apps onto your phone without a developers account.
But fi you're a student you might be able to claim a Student account from Dreamspark.

Just watch the Dreamspark method as you don't seem to be able to register a device until you have your identity verified which, for students, doesn't happen until you submit an application for certification. I am still waiting to hear back from MS on that and if there is a way round it. It means you cannot test your application on a real device until after you have submitted it for certification which seems rather odd.
The tools themselves are very good it is very easy to produce a good looking functional application. There is quite a bit on http://create.msdn.com/ to get you started.

OEM SDK

I've gone to a couple WP7 training courses and whenever the developers ask about having access to parts of the OS and things of that nature, the microsoft rep mentions theres a OEM SDK. That SDK is unavailble to normal developers and only available to OEMs. If any very resourceful xda members got ahold of that SDK and leaked it, we would see some very interesting apps! It would be a great start to a jailbroken/rooted app store or something of that nature. Just offer all the great apps that wouldn't normally get approved by MSFT. ie wifi tethering, emulators....
Unless you can magically make sideloading happen, this will not work.

I think that the OP is counting on some kind of "jailbreak" will solve that problem
(and so am I)
Actually if you have your phone registered as a dev phone, you kind of have a jailbroken one. Because you have the freedom to put any xap on you want.
It's just going to be the standard WindowsCE dev environment, right? All the WinCE libraries are on the phone, anyway. If you have Visual Studio, I think you can download the WindowsCE version from Microsoft, at least the trial version. Look around, you'll find it.
There's still a limit on the number of apps you can load. I believe it's 10 apps.

Forget it. All players seem to have a portrait video player with the ability to swipe left and right while the video still plays. They seem to have came up with the same idea on different sides of the earth.
Lazytube portrait mode didn't allow reading of comments while watching a video, the video played but you couldn't read and watch at the same time. This update made it possible to read and comment just Like another famous player. Yeah, its nothing like that other player though, I'll be blind.

i would really like to hear it from MS and google about what disagreement they are having. MS is bringing youtube to Xbox. So Google is not completly blocking them out. If google is blocking just for WP, isn't it abuse of market leadership? Google is already under fire for such behavior, I don't believe that's the case.
If anyone has links to any good, accurate information, please let me know.
Having said this, Metrotube is amazingly well done app. It deserves the name Metrotube as it beautifully adheres to metroUI.
Just downloaded this. Much better looking than the HTC Youtube (not that I complained about it).
Does anyone know if the free trial actually expires? Does it have all the features of the paid version? Perhaps the benefits to purchasing is gaining access to updates?
^ who knows. No one ever gave a definitive answer. I'll take metroTube anyway.
It probably is Google though, as there is absolutely no Google apps on this OS. However you have to look at the direct competition to Google which is Bing. So, its complex.

As far as I'm informed there are no limits or registrations. Trial and paid version are currently absolutely identical. You should be able to receive updates as well. The only "limitation" about the current offer is: it won't last forever. Means if you want the full app for free, better get it now.
But honestly, I'd pay those $0.99 anyway (if I hadn't already done it months ago). In my opinion LazywormApps deserve a lot more than that.
I looked up the youtube API restrictions... I think this might be the reason
What can I do if I'm running into quota limits?
The following information may help you to avoid exceeding quota limits:
•The quota system ties API usage to a specific developer key, which means your application is less likely to be flagged for quota violations if it specifies a developer key in its API requests.
•Different types of API operations count differently toward quota calculations. Generally, you can make more frequent HTTP GET requests to retrieve data than POST, PUT or DELETE requests to modify data.
•Your application should avoid making API requests that do not originate from user interaction. For example, continuous requests that are a part of a background synchronization or bulk import process are likely to trigger quota violations.
If the API does return a quota violation error, your code will need to detect the error and handle it appropriately. we recommend that you stop all API calls from your application for 10 minutes to "reset" your quota. When you resume making API calls, scale back on the frequency of your requests.
If you are still running into the quota limits within these guidelines, and you feel that the quota is throttling legitimate traffic from your site, please contact us.

So I think Google is not willing to remove the limit for MS. If MS makes a dafault Youtube client, it is very likely to hit the limit as all WP users will be using it rather than other apps like Metrotube.
Other than that, I didn't really find any other restriction in the API.
The description in Marketplace says that the paid version supports HD video streaming. I'm guessing the trial is HQ only.
That said, my Focus seems to stutter even on HQ :/ Anyone else have that issue? Maybe I've dropped it one too many times, heh.
