how do I install a kernal and which one should I use
Why have you posted this 3-4 times in this forum already?
If your s-off put this on the root of your sd card and flash from hboot

Then pick a kernel to flash from recovery. Or ruu to stock and read up on what your doing so you don't need to create 5 threads

Hi i have the htc desire i have been using different roms and trying the hd roms out lately, the last rom i used was the z port from from roblix i used the data 2 sd version.
i decided i didnt want the data2sd and i wanted to go back to the a2sd like i had been used to so i used gparted to remove all the partitions from my sd card and repartitioned it to the correct thing to use a2sd.......
i went into recovery and wiped all the things from the phone getting ready to flash but after i wiped the phone rebooted.....well it wouldnt
from that point on the phone will not boot normally because i removed the things with wiping all data....and it will not go into recovery either i had amon ra recovery image flashed to my phone.....which all worked hundreds of times before....
all i can do now is get to hboot menu or fastboot menu if i select recovery from there the phone goes off and comes to the first screen where it hangs for ever.
please advise what i can do to fix my phone to get recovery back again
If your S-Off you can flash a recovery again through fastboot. Erm... I can't remember how to do it if your not so you will have to search the forums for the solution or Google it. If you wanted to, you could use an RUU (and a Goldcard if necessary to bypass the verification) but you would have to root again.
i have tried to flash recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img via fastboot and it said it flashed ok but it wont boot to recovery still ..... the phone reboots and just sticks on the first boot screen and does nothing else at all
any other ideas
Try CWM 2.5.0.7? Install an RUU to reset it back then just root it again?
I have a Wildfire as above.
I was given it with 2.2.1 installed and have boot unlocked thru the HTC Dev website. The bootloader shows that the handset is currently S-on.
Can I root from here to install a custom ROM? And if so, how?
all you need its here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145035 ...you will need to downgrade your HBoot first, but everything its explain in the link, its not very difficult but it takes a while and its a bit scary first time haha.
You can follow that guide posted above, or a far simpler method would be to flash a Custom Recovery (Via Fastboot) and then flash the ROM of your choice.
Custom Recovery flashing steps can be found here:

Once you have Clockworkmod installed, the instructions to install a Custom ROM can be found here:

Good Luck
CWM is now installed and backup complete.
Will be installing ROM soon. Thank you all for your help!!
hi Fedrat,
I have followed 3xeno' instructions and successfuly installed CWM, however I do not see CWM as an app or an option anywhere when I reboot.
It doesn't solve my S-ON problem and doesn't root my phone still showing HBOOT 1.02.0000 and cannot move to flashing a new rom until that gets out of the way.
What did I miss? and did you successfully install a new ROM?
Thanks
Cwm is an advanced recovery, it's written to the recovery partition which is hidden so the average Joe cannot mess with it.
Press volume down + power to get into hboot when the phone is off, then choose recovery and it will take you there.
Unlocking the bootloader doesn't give root access but it does set you up for it, most roms come pre rooted so once you get into Cwm first backup your stock rom then wipe cache, data, dalvik cache and flash your new rom from the install zip from sd menu.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
Here is what I did
I unlocked the bootloader
I installed CWM
I used CWM to flash superuser
I flashed a ROM (latest MIUI to be specific)
S is also ON. I know it should be off, how can I turn it off at this point?
I can get into recovery, I can install ROMs but the phone will not boot past the HTC logo... help
got a rom to start but now the keyboard keeps crashing :-\
I am wondering if I can get s-off from here? I'm on bootloadeer .98 btw
So, there's two things you can do. You can go back to recovery and download a ROM that's not the current MIUI, which is really buggy. Then, follow my guide #6 in the directory for how to flash ROMs after doing the HTC unlock.
The problem I am having is that I have a custom Recovery installed with S-ON. I need to turn S-Off before I can do any of that. I followed your guide in 6 which links me to a post on installing the recovery, however those instructions state that S must be off. The only ROMs that work are those that resemble stock or install a boot.img in recovery
i flashed a dodgy rom the other day , my phone wont boot in to recovery or boot up (actaull rom) . i can acceas boot loader and fast boot ... i think my custom recovery is corrupt etc ....
any ideas what is the best soultion eg ruu etc
do i need a gold card if i wan to downgrade to 2.2 and i am reverting back to stock telstra(austrlaia)
can you flash via the bootlaoder eg update zip ? are there other ways to install a custom recovery ,i think it's called a p811img.zip or update zip can i just zip and rename a nandroid backup and restore that way ...
if fastboot is working and you believe the recovery is corrupt, just try flashing a correct recovery through adb fastboot?
there's a tutorial on that somewhere on the forum, then you can probably try nandroid recovery if you made a copy previously
Don't search the forums for any fixes, you'll never find any.. making a new thread was totally the right thing to do.
Also, don't look at my guide, it really sucks and there's nothing useful for you on it.
I'm using a custom rom, after unlocking bootloader and custom CWM.
Before I installed the custom rom I did a backup in CWM of the original rom (O2 branded, 1.26.xxxx).
Now there is an OTA from O2 and I want to go back to my original rom. So, I tried the following:
- boot into CWM
- whipe everything
- restored the backup
But...the phone doesn't want to boot. It stays in the white screen with HTC logo. What's going on here? Someone knows what I'm doing wrong?
Has it something to do with the franco-kernel I used?
Please help!!
Thanks in advance
First of all even if you do manage to get your backup restored the OTA update wont work because you have the Clockwork Recovery installed. In order to install OTA updates you must have the Stock recovery.
My advice would be to just ask your chef to update the custom Rom that you are using to the latest OTA (most have done so already). Failing that relock the bootloader, flash the O2 RUU and then update OTA.
Clockworkmod won't restore the boot image from backups , so you'll have to take it out the backup and flash it in fastboot.
Thank you both. It's done yet!
