[Q] Difference on S-on and S-Off - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the topic says, whats the difference on hvaing s-off and s-on?
I had a rooted Wildfire and never had S-off on it.
Do i gain anything by S-off my desire?

If you don't know what it's for then you don't need it...but it basically gives you FULL root access to the /system partition

S-OFF makes it so you're not dependant on booting into recovery every single time you edit something in /system
Makes life easier.

Most phones until very recently when you have root it automatically has given you full root. On the desire (and probably all new htc android phones) they have added an extra layer of security that locks the nand while in use. This stops us being able to use things like Fastboot, and adb to edit /system files while booted.
Luckily we always had partial root and could do most things when in a custom recovery.
Now with S-Off or Security Off we can have full access like what a normal root on most phones enables.
So technically your wildfire does not have s-off because it was never s-on in the first place.

+1 alpharev are working on a modified bootloader for the buzz, i rooted and flashed my brothers wildfire yesterday, although rom development looked a bit thin on the ground to me lol as far as i know all htc's come with a security locked bootloader, even back in the days of win mo, we needed hard spl, which was just an unlocked bootloader

How to root a Wildfire with a Android application?

Hey
How can I root a Wildfire using a Android application (.apk) installed on the phone? I tried Gingerbreak and it reboots the phone, it gets "stuck" on one of the bootscreens; I say "stuck" because it stay on there after 3 minutes or so, I hit the power button and suddenly it gets unstuck but Superuser is NOT installed.
Using unrevoked or similar types of programs is not possible in my scenario. If it was, I would have used that the first time around and be done with this
Thanks for the help
Sadly the only ways I know of are unrevoked (hboot 0.80) or alpharev x beta (hboot 1.01). Just remember you use these tools at your own risk
Just so that you know AlphaRevX=/= Root.
AlphaRevX enables you to root, you still need to root it.

Yes, you can use gingerbread.apk to root you phone, but provided only when your phone is S-OFF either by xtc clip or by alpharevx.
If your hboot is 0.80 with s-on, then use unrevoked to root. Alternatively you can update the hboot to 1.01 and use alpharevx to s-off and then root. The advantage in doing this is having s-off. But read a bit in these forums about that.
And if your hboot is 1.01 with s-on, then only way presently is to make s-off and then root.
[Definitely there should be a need of PC for using unrevoked or alpharevx for a S-ON wildfire. When there is nand security, I think it is not possible to run something (other than HTC updates) from phone itself when it is in hboot/fastboot mode. Correct me if I'm wrong.]

Its a shame I cant do it since I do not have access to the Wildfire and a PC at the same time.
Oh well thanks for the information.

should I s-on after s-off

Hi,
My desire is currently s-off, and is normally left as s-off. I dont change back to s-on when I use the phone normally. Should I?
I guess that there is a potential risk all the time that s-off is set, but is this a real risk in reality if the phone is being used normally?
Also I dont use the stock partion tables (I normally use cm r2). Is it possible to apply s-on to non stock partition.

If it's not broken, don't fix it. The only way to restore S-ON is by flashing the stock hboot via PB99IMG.zip, which also restores the stock partitions, so leave it alone.

Thank god its still working, but im so angry since i know, that he messed up something. We try togheter with process of goldcard and that didnt went through too. So im wondering if anybody know, how to downgrade properly so i can root my phone.
I think before unrooting was on hboot 0.93.001,and know is on 1.0.003 . So please if anybody can help me with some suggestion or anything else i would be realy greatfull.
MY HBOOT :

HBOOT- 1.03.0003
Microp-031d
Touch Panel-Synt0101
Radio-5.11.05.27
Thanks and regards from Slovenia
At the moment it is impossible to root your phone. It was a bad idea to unlock your bootloader with the software by HTC. Now you have to wait and hope that someone find a way to root + S-OFF with bootloader-version 1.03.0003.
Hi
Any news for my phone ?
Thanks
unlock it with the HTC utility, then place the attached file onto the root of your sd-card, and boot into the bootloader (not fastboot), when it asks to update click yes, you should then have a custom recovery that you can boot into.
Because you updated the bootloader, there is as of yet no way to get "true" S-OFF and flash one of alpharev's bootloaders, so tough luck.
So as i understand, with above method i can gain root access to load custom roms ?

With that method, you gain access to recovery, giving you the possibility to a) gain root access to your stock ROM (not necessary), backup your nand memory to SD-Card (do before flashing), wipe nand memory, flash root ROMs, and many more features.

Question on the bootloader

Hi guys,
I'm just wondering about two things that I've never quite understood.
1. When booting into the bootloader, more precisely hboot, I get an error like this:
Code:
SD Checking
Loading...[PC49DIAG.zip]
No Image!
Loading...[PC49DIAG.nbh]
No Image or wrong image!
What does this mean?
2. My bootloader says:
Code:
-Revolutionary-
BUZZ PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.01.1002
MICROP-0622
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-3.35.15.31
Nov 17 2010,12:08:53
Are there different methods for removing the S-ON and rooting the device since the first line with BUZZ PVT... looks sometimes different in other bootloaders that I saw on the forum.
The version of HBOOT that I'm using, ist this the most recent one?
The PC49IMG or diag are files that the bootloader looks for, for example s-off users can flash certain things by using a PC49IMG.zip. You just drop the file on your sd and boot into hboot, it should pick up the file and ask if you want to flash it.
Don't worry about the error message, it just means it found nothing to flash.
There's a couple of different ways to s-off a wildfire, i used alpharevx way back in the day, this got upgraded to revolutionary. Then there is the HTC dev website which i wouldn't trust as its HTC and even though it says unlocked it really isn't......
No need to mess with your bootloader the method you used to unlock it was the best one imo. The updated hboot numbers you have seen don't bring extra features, just tighter security.

Thanks on this Scratch. So I can simply ignore the hboot No Image error since I'm using CWM to flash ROMs and apps?
Yes you can ignore them. Just use cwm only and you are on the safe side for flashing and stuff

flashing PC49IMG.zip's works fine though (i.e. splashscreens etc.)

S-on & s-off device

What is the exwct meaning and significance of S-OF AND S-OFF device
I frequently came to read this terms so i wanna know what exectly it is...plz help
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
S-ON is pretty much a locked bootloader. Some things are restricted.y.
S-OFF means you have complete control of the phone. Security off. Do whatever you want from whatever mode you want.
S-OFF means "security off" and that the NAND partition of the device is unlocked and writable to. With S-OFF you could easily flash kernels and recoveries directly on phone without a PC.
S-ON restricts partitions and thus prevents us from writing to e.g. boot partition. You are always able write boot with an unlocked bootloader and a PC if you want.
No S-OFF for One X at the moment.
