I brought a HTC HD7 this morning and after setting it up, i noticed 2 dead pixels, i returned it and swapped it for a new device (which is fine)
BUT i now cannot setup my Windows Live account on the phone, and it is asking for a Windows Live Activation Code.
O2 do not know what this is.
HTC do not know what this is.
Doesnt anyone know where i can get one, or how to contact microsoft in the UK, or just any information about it?
Could try here:

Dunno if they'll help much though...there's also the Facebook page you could spam lol:

I have a "Microsoft Answers" question here http://social.answers.microsoft.com...7/thread/bb66fdc6-61f5-4a9a-91ad-56b2013ed5c3 and it just seems to be leading to a issue with Microsoft?
First day teething issues?
Was so cheesed off it didnt work out of the box i called all the MS teams under the sun and no one knows anything about it.
Ive just had mine sorted by Avinash Kumar at Ms customer service, on 0844 800 2400
His email is [email protected]
another option might be to go to live.com and go to your devices and un-register the first phone, don't know if that will work but maybe...
Ok it turns out its a product key issues
If you phone Avinash Kumar at Ms customer service, on 0844 800 2400 (menu item 4 or 5 that you have the name of the person - its technical customer service)
they will generate a new product key for you.
Then its done.

See Casey_boy's post above. The second link will probably be your best bet.
that didn't take long at all, the rep was helpful, just asked for name, phone number, & email address. placed me on hold, then came back with the product key.

Hello there. I have the 25 digit code, and have successfully activated my windows live account on my HD2. But when entering Marketplace, i get this message:
"Either Xbox LIVE or Marketplace for Windows Phone isn't offered yet in your country/region. Please check back later."
What can I do? WP7 is kind of boring without Marketplace access.
NB: I've tried to change my country settings under my windows live ID to USA, from Denmark. But still, same error message."Can't set up your account" HD2 - WP7
what is your code?

Well thats not very nice trying to con someone out of their activation code, dont give it to him.
I had this on a genuine HD7 the other day. Setup Zune, go through the process to download a free app through Zune on the PC. It'll fix it.
Edit: wrong person

IDK why people are so afraid to call Microsoft to get the code. It's easy. Call the Customer Desk, ask them that you need activation code for WP7 and that is how i got mine. Seriously, man up.

All,
Why all the fuss to Chevron Unlock or any other hack when you can just register it as a developer phone and unlock it officially for free????
Oh, maybe you all didn't know about the free part, maybe that is the piece of magic everyone is seeking...
Here is how to register your phone as a developer phone FOR FREE....
1. Get and verify a Dreamspark account. Two options here....
a. If you are a student with an email address ending in .edu just go to www.dreamspark.com, register and verify the email address.
2. Create an Apphub account and link it to your Dreamspark LiveId.
a. After Dreamspark is verified, go to http://create.msdn.com/en-US/ register your Windows Live ID and signup as a student. It will ask if you have a verified Dreamspark account, follow the steps to link the two accounts. (I didn't take screenshots but intuitive)
3. Populate your required profile information to the point that "My Dashboard-->My Windows Phone" does not show any more pending tasks.
a. You MUST go through the process to submit a "DummyApp" for Windows Mobile 6.5 to Windows MarketPlace before Geotrust will send you the email to verify your identity. Just put "Dummyapp for id verification" in the notes sections. You will have to upload a .cab and a bunch of icons that all have to be sized properly. Just take a .png file and resize it a bunch of times and upload it. Doesn't matter what it is.
b. Geotrust will send an email requesting you to verify some info. I received it about 10 minutes after submitting my app, but could take 24 hours. I answered 4 questions, and then about 2 hours later Apphub took off the "identity verification pending" alert.
c. I also submitted my bank account info, but not sure if this was necessary.
4. Download the Windows phone developer tools from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=04704acf-a63a-4f97-952c-8b51b34b00ce
5. Run the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool. Sign in with Windows Live ID you registered at AppHub, connect your phone and make sure it is not screen locked, viola, Windows 7 Phone now unlocked. And you can unlock 2 other Windows 7 phones too for a total of 3 phones.
Total process took less than 24 hours due to waiting on Geotrust and MS confirm.

This is only for students,so its not really an option for everyone

I assume he ment that Dreamspark is for students that cannot afford the software but can bring in revenue to Microsoft with the program and games they create. So, if you signup under the guise of a student, you can kind of defrauding Microsoft. But I guess that is a moral issue, so most people may not care. But, there are also schools and online classes that do not provide any sort of educational email addresses, so having a way to gain access as someone studying and taking classes, is nice. So, in those cases I think its ok. I personally use a Austraila.edu email since my online classes didn't provide anything. But, this might be a nice way to get an unlock if you are NoDo and can Go(do) back.
I keep getting the following error when I get to step 2a:
WE’RE SORRY. AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED.
We have detected an error while processing the page you were looking for. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try again.

Any ideas what that is?
EDIT: weird.... I just tried it again (for the fourth time) and it worked. So if you get the above error, just keep trying.
I live in country that App hub does not support. Can anyone help me please?
AppHub confirmation step3 is disabled and NEXT button not working
Hmmm only have one problem.
You have to submit an APP and does it come up in marketplace ?.
Dont know how to get a "Dummy APP" to put on market for Winmobile 6.5 or 7.
If you can just put in a random app witch does not get in marketplace then i guess its no problem.
*edit*
Made a Winphone 7 app that does not have any purpose, lets check what happens
All this works.
Sadly I failed the geotrust verification, so I have to send a signed document with a copy of my national ID. Let's hope they believe my history about living in the states but having a ID of another country.
All works fine until i had to verify my account after publishing the dummy app. But now verifying failed and i have to send them my copy of id etc. But how the hell could i send them my info when i give them fake ( generated ) info?

Sadly it'd require me giving you my Windows Live ID & password, which I'm not exactly fond of lol. You need to enter it into the unlocker tool installed on the pc the device is connected to. Just folow the information giving by the OP closely with your real information (don't make up a fake ID) & it'll work. It took a couple hrs for me to finally get verified.

No because it contains my id and autograph.
But its very simple, just print the mail they snend you, fill in everything add a copy of your id, scan it and email it back. Its not even a letter, just add what i said above as your motivation.
Did you received the email from geotrust?
****, I'm stucked again.
The apphub doesn't let me choose my country, so I chose USA and now geotrust rejects my documentation because it's not from the USA.
Ahh, Microsoft, always fu*king the third world.
Ever since i started using wp7 i noticed that i have been getting a lot of scamming calls, and these people know my name, an idea of which borough i live 'my location' and they check ur FB using ur name and guess ur age group and direct a call to you accordingly.
US residents, NY residents, be careful. I just searched my number on this WP7 app called 'number guru' and damn, my full first and last name showed up.. for my blackberry friends, nothing.. total privacy... no names.. just a 'wireless user'..
i think the damage has already been done.. my name and number is out their for all these scammers to lynch on.. i just have to be careful now about the calls i recieve.. last week i recieved a call from someone pretending to bank of america and they started with 'Hi am i speaking to 'MY FULL NAME'" and i was like this must be legit... than i got call from someone pretending to be a university.. one more stating i signed up for working from home and start a business .. atleast now i know that my number, my name and my location is out there and anyone can buy it..
i have been using same number for last three years and never got such calls before.. but in last two months i get one such call every 2nd week..
Edit: BTW i am dead sure its from WP7 because once i confronted the lady pretending to be a university offering me admission if i answered some of her 'personal questions' first.. i asked her is she really know me or is just calling a random number..? and she said : 'oh i know you, your name is this, you live here, and your email is '[email protected]' ... which i never use for anything else other than my wp.

Maybe its the first windows phone virus, that would be cool.
I remember when people said Linux and apple is weren't more secure, they just weren't targeted by virus writers because there was no value in hacking such a small number of computers using it....but now with ISO and android, I don't hear that anymore...hmmm
Anyway, have you nailed down the application that is leaking information yet?

Its not any virus or any malicious program.. its people.. i have downloaded 100 apps and games.. and everyone asks for owner's identity, location.. they just save it in their database, pile it up and sell it to marketeers...
these guys calling me all know just three things about me: my name, my neighborhood and my live id.. they dont know my card details which i use to pay for apps.. neither my exact address (like zip code, or street name) ..
i ran a few iphone numbers of friends i know who use it.. and all their names show up in 'number guru' app.. i dont know anyone with android.. but none of the blackberries numbers have their names flashed for world to see like this.. i thought one's cell number is one of most private thing to have.. next to full residential address.. how can they publish it with my name like that.. its not fair.
You do know that cell phone numbers were all public until a couple of years ago, and you had to opt for them to be private. Many people still have theirs listed as public and don't even know it. It may just be a coincidence... I looked up my number, still private... And I install every single app just to check them out, especially ones spoken about here
Sorry, but there is no systemic "WP7 privacy violation" going on. I have installed many apps that use location and even owner identity (probably more than most people in this forum), but Number Guru has me listed as an anonymous user. My wife, who uses a Blackberry, and has essentially no 3rd party apps installed (other than official ones, like Facebook), shows up in Number Guru by name.
Oh, and I still get lots of spam calls. Most of them are coming from criminals who have gotten copies of the US Do Not Call list, and are using it to spam people. There are forums popping up all over the net to talk about this problem.
Than how come they have my Live ID listed as my email id? That email i just created only for phone and have not used even once anywhere.
I don't know. But you missed my point. Sure, there may be an unscrupulous app developer out there who is harvesting personal information and selling it, but that is no different from any other possible environment where you might either intentionally or accidentally provide personal information.
My point is that there is nothing specific to WP7 that makes this any worse than anywhere else in our lives. My ID is still private on Number Guru, despite the fact that I have installed well over 500 apps over the 10 months that I've owned my phone (most have obviously been uninstalled later), many of which asked for owner identity permission. By contrast, my wife, who has never owned a WP7 device, is not private.
Vote for suggestion that, call and SMS filtering should be provided inbuilt in Windows Phone 7 as it is necessary feature.
Kindly vote here.

Have you maybe signed up to any website using this email?
As far as I know apps can't even see your Windows Live ID.
The only thing I could imagine is that an app promted you to send an email and you sent this email using the Windows Live ID you created.
I don't really get any calls of this sort that often. so fail on blaming wp7 as the cause.

I have never sent any email using my live.com email to anyone.. my sent folder is empty.. I only created and used it to sign into my brand new wp7... thats it..
i also get a lot of nigeria type scam emails on this mail account, even though i absolutely never used it anywhere to register or to send any feedback .. nothing.. but thats not important for me.. i just dont like the phone calls which come with a good degree of accurate info about me ever since i started using wp7.. i have been using this phone number for last 3 yrs.. but these calls started coming after two-three months of wp7.
here are some numbers i get call from:
866-901-9856
213-725-5387
602-602-6000
877-759-4409
Several other 800 numbers..
I just want to warn everyone.. thats it.. wp7 has started these calls, i know it for fact.. many iphone users have complained about the same on number guru..
Edit: i think developers can see your live id once you review their application.. i am not sure about it.
I am pretty sure that you have a spy app install (or had one at some point) that sent your email, phone number, location, etc. back to the app's author who then resell this info to other people.
This type of apps are a huge problem on Android and to some degree on iOS.
So my suggestion is that when you install apps and you get a prompt that the app is accessing your location, phone number, etc., don't just click "allow" "allow" "allow".
Also, make sure to reset your password just in case your Windows Live got hacked.

If you log into Zune, you should be able to go to purchase history and see if the download occured. Also, you can go to Windowsphone.com, click on your account and see the same downloads.
What you say about the AT&T section though indicates a potential problem. If the AT&T section and/or the Nokia section is missing from the marketplace, it indicates you may not be provisioned correctly. All Windows Phone users get Marketplace. Those special sections, called Storefronts, are available only to validated customers of that carrier, hardware or OEM. It may take a few hours for them to actually show up. If yours is not showing up, then it indicates a connection is not being correctly made. I'd call AT&T and validate your data connection is correctly set up. Been alot of that going on the last 4 days, but now that the phone is released to the public, we should see less of it occuring.
Good Luck

YOu don't need to sync, though it makes it easier to see. The results you're looking for are pulled off of your account with Microsoft. As long as your zune account and microsoft account are the same ID, there's no worries.
However, if you go to WindowsPhone.com and log in, this is the uber site. You will see your information here, and be able to see your device, and potentially reinstall most apps from this site.
Go to Microsoft.com/windowsphone. log in with your Windows Live ID on the right side. You'll see your registered name appear. Click here and choose account. You'll see lots of stuff.
Problem solved: As you suspected, the phone was not correctly commissioned. Called AT&T and worked through it. We're good now! Thanks again.

A side note though....this only works if you are also an xboxlive customer. If you are not, then this does not always work.
Apparently, Microsoft is still bringing all the variations of the Windows Live ID together....still not there yet.
I just got a new Lumia 900 (I love it!). To my surprise, While setting it up, I was not asked for the activation code (on another phone, it was always asked, and the one associated with my live account was always accepted). Is this normal? the fact is that I can get to the market place, download apps, but whenever I try to get to my account settings on the windowsphone web site, an error ("ooops, cannot go to this page presently, try later...") comes up, so I cannot reinstall the apps I had purchased previously (through the web page or the Reinstaller app).
Again, is this normal? if not, What can I do to have access to my old apps? thank you

WP7 phones typically do not ask for activation code unless something goes wrong with your live ID. I have never been asked any activation code for all four of my WP7 phones.

They do. IIRC, it is up to 5 phones at the same time. They all have to sign in to the same Live ID which means you have to share live contacts, calendar and email among those phones. Android is the similar (not sure about iOS but it probably is the same).
Correct. For the OP, hard reset your phone and try again. Login with the same Windows ID you used to download/purchase the apps the first tine and they will all be available.
Btw, for paid apps, there will be an option to purchase. Don't be afraid to click it. If you previously purchased the app, it will ask if you want to redownload. If you didn't purchase previously, if will ask you to confirm.
