HTC today lauched the Desire HD and Desire Z both of which have the new HTCSence.com services which lets you manage your device from a web browser where you can find your lost phone, clear all information from the phone and transfer information from device to device.
Anyone know if this service will be available to other users of the old HTC Sense before the new phones?

As far as I know it will be available for all customers using HTC handset with Sense capabilities.
Only HTC will know this as it was announced today...give it time and more information will come out
I'm looking forward to this if it allows for easy backups of the phone.
Anyone else read about Nokia giving out HTC survival kits? Lol.

Read about it, quite a laugh. It should have been Nokia trying to survive kits considering that Nokia is struggling to survive the mobile biz right now!
Just gutted I wasn't able to make it to London tonight for the public event, could be a laugh..

false... not everyone needs a smartphone, and for many people nokia handsets are "smart enough", or simply they need "dumb phones" that can call, call well and call for long time! Days of standby, some models even weeks... do it with a smartphone, if you can, without a nuclear portable power source... it's STILL and will be for many years the first producer, because it has a range of devices that goes from the basic device of as low as 20€, to the smartphones that have still now many people used to its GUI... an android or iphone user doubtly will return to THAT gui, btw...
From Engadget:
Eric Lin was on hand to answer the question of when this new Sense might trickle down to the classic Desire or other handsets in HTC's portfolio. Well, his answer was a non-answer: no roadmap or schedule has been set and HTC isn't ruling anything out just yet.

Hope they release it for the Desire as soon as the HD and Z launch. Oh well, I'm sure the devs will make sure that we'll have the new sense in no time!
No updates anyone?
does anyone think that this will work on a rooted desire running official 2.2 rom????
I want badly! we need this.
It's only just been announced and we won't know until it has been released on the new Desire Z, Desire HD phones. I hope they update the Desire to this new sense though.

Me too! This new sense has some nice new features.
Looking through HD specifications I saw that it will support .avi and .xvid video playback. Could be useful if they bring this to Desire. DLNA too.
And this HTCSense.com thing sounds nice.
Even if they can't update the sense on the Desire I am sure it wouldn't take much for HTC to make an app to read phone data, many free apps already do this so should be simple in theory.

have you guys not learnt anything from htc yet lol i can guarante you this feature will not be officially ported to the desire. the main reason is because if htc gave there older phones all the new features, what incentive do we have to spend $500/600 on a new device

this is very true. i waited for ages on the 2.1 update for the hero until i got fed up and got a desire
You have a point, AndroHero, but on the other hand, how many Desire owners would actually switch to a Desire HD or Desire Z? I know there are some enthusiasts, but most of us will at the least wait until next year. I could understand not giving this to a model that's maybe 1-2 years old, but Desire is from this spring, so it wouldn't prevent many people from buying a new phone, and people would know that buying a HTC was a safe bet.
I'm not saying it will come to Desire, but I think it should.
I just got my desire and see no reason to upgrade to these phones at all.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I bought Desire in April and I will probably skip Desire HD. Its nice phone, but I don't think its worth to upgrade, because I think soon we will have better phones available: with dual core processors, Android Gingerbread etc. So I will rather wait for those phones.
Hi All,
Anyone know of any news whether we will be getting a ROM Upgrade or a HTC Sense update for the Desire at all?
Thanks
read on a thread somewhere in here that it is coming to desires in december.
Or u could always flash hd rom. Sense hd i mean
Patience my friend, it's coming in December
Aye December, my guess is it will be included with Gingerbread update.
Yay! Thanks guys, I love this board so much. Maybe it sounds odd, but I hate flashing ROMs rather than using the stock ones. Just feels dirty
Awaiting December.
what have you guys been smoking there will be no gingerbread or sence update i can guarantee you that

experience.... first of all the desire is nearly a year old, waaay to old for htc support in my experience. secondly, htc want us to buy new handsets not keep our old ones, it makes no sence updating old hardware. and finally, the htc legend is only a few months older than our desire and they dont even have froyo yet, so you give me an example of htc supporting year old hardware with new software updates and i will rescind my comments

What you say is true, of course hTC would want us to buy the Desire HD & Z, but the Desire is less than 7 months old (announced in April, realeased in May/ June), not 1 year old, that means nearly all Desire users are still bound by their contracts. If hTC was to abandon the Desire, how would their customers feel? that hTC keeps on pushing out new models but leaving the older models to wither & die? I think not...
but only time would tell

good point were all second guessing htc anyway, only they know what devices there going to continue to support
If the new Sense doesn't come to Desire do you think it'd be possible to at least get HTC's offline Maps app - like they have with other features?
I bought a Hero when it came - so I know all about HTC not supporting devices. The first update I got for that phone came in June (Eclair).
And the thing about that update was that it came in two packages. It was a ****ty update I didn't use.
It's a fact that HTC doesn't support their own devices. When it comes to the Desire, I'm hoping they won't **** on us again, it's not outdated yet.
Or maybe it is to HTC - Still. I'm going to have this phone for another 9 months so it'd be nice with at least one official update.
HTC - "We make new phones for you.
Get rid of the old one, seriously."

Nothing makes me angry than ignorance. This is ignorance of the highest order. The iPhone 3G was released in July 2008 and it's still getting firmware updates. The Desire is barely 7 months old.
Grrrrr!

The iPhone is an iPhone.
The iPhone was not made by HTC
Apple makes the iPhone
HTC and Apple are not the same
Apple/iPhone - supported.
HTC/Any device - unsupported.
It's not ignorance. It's basic knowledge. HTC doesn't continue supporting devices. Apple might. HTC doesn't.
Then again, that's one of the reasons XDA exists.

dont call me ignorant, instead educate yourself, the reason even 2g iphones still get firmware updates is so apple can keep the tyrannic grip on what software they use!!! htc dont use this method, and after owning maybe 10 htc devices in the last 10 years, i think i can speak with experience.

Wasn't really trying to start a rumor. Just that gingerbread is expected from Google 4th quarter and new sense expected December made sense to me that HTC would wait and give one last update together.
i seriously hope that's the case, but it seems unlikely and I think It'll be up to XDA to get gingerbread onto the Desire...
It makes me kinda sad to read this. I know it's true and yet I always hope HTC changes their game plan and just support older devices.
I know they want ppl to buy their new devices but why would you buy a HTC you can only use for roughly a half year and then get outdated software.
Why not choose for a Samsung Galaxy S? mayB they have better support for their devices (just an example).
but I hope we all get proven wrong!!
There is a reason because HTC is going to upgrade our Desires. I think HTC want to boost the htcsense.com portal and for this, new sense is required, and what hardware can use new sense? Only Desire. So it’s a way to get a lot of users without waiting the sales of Z and HD

no, older phones can also support HTCSense, this can be proven as they announced that all future HTC Android devices will support HTCSense (both Entry level [eg.wildfire type] and Enterprise level [eg. Desire type]). but HTC are holding them off entry level phones as they are stingy and want us to buy more phones from them.
For all of you more educated on the matter or for any of you who have heard rumors, do you think we will ever see the "new sense" like on the desire z and hd official for the droid incredible?
And when and if and when we will 2.3 with sense offically released for DINC
Thanks for your input,
Matt

Nope, but I wish I did.
Ypu're asking a question that no one is capable of answering. For the Inc to be updated to Gingerbread, both HTC and VZW will have to decide that they will continue to support it with the update. HTC would then compile their build and run it through internal testers. Once they are satisfied with it, they would then submit it to VZW for approval. Big Red then adds their own bloat, runs it through their own testing, and either accepts or rejects the changes. If it proves unstable, it goes back to HTC for the cycle to be repeated.
As for the updated Sense and the ability to use htcsense.com, that's currently just a pilot program for the Desire Z and HD in the UK. If and when the program is expanded beyond those two phones, the HTC reps that I've talked to speculate that newer phones such as the Incredible and Evo will be updated accordingly since they meet the hardware specs. However, as before, this is all going to be up to HTC and VZW as to if and how the upgrade would happen.
Thank you for the info

I have a rooted phone, would I still get an OTA update if it ever did come out?
When will it come??
Late April to May was the last I heard, but will it have HTC Sense 2.1?
Read the other numerous threads instead of starting a pointless one
not sure but its good news that is coming soon
I read that it does but not sure how reliable they were

I have read http://bit.ly/gSN39i. If the update is allready in the hands of the 3 network for testing, wouldn't it normally be the case that it would now be released to un-branded handsets?
I read somewhere like end of April/May... and in Android community forum a tweet of guy who is working on Gingerbread ROM for HTC desire..not sure how legti this might be...

Some people are sure that 3 network, on twitter, confused the update with the one of the Desire HD..But i hope they really mean our Desire
the os may have support for it - whether the hardware is there or not...
No need to suspect. Just check out the FCC website. It does not.

Looks like Samsung beat HTC this time, Galaxy S in EU recieved Gingerbread update today.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/16/galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-now-rolling-out-across-europe/
For me this is another important point for decision between SGS2 and HTC Sensation.
bit disappointed that samsung beat htc to pushing out gingerbread, hoping to see the update come soon though, especially with the sign of the leaked gingerbread update
Typed on Motorola Xoom
gingerbread leaked for Desire
I cooked ROM and flashed a2sd works. Updated Radio its based on the old Sense with some tweak. Had old marker but was able to update Vending apk. Unfortunately, because don't post often unless I can contribute I'm considered a new member and am not allowed to post in the development area or upload files. I based by ROM on leedroid's previous roms as in my opinion he is one of the top 2 developers working on HTC Desire ROMs.
Anyhow, his version is set to be out tonight. Search the forum threads. Again not new sense but its gingerbread and its a begining.
Acc to Eurodroid "HTC Desire Android 2.3 update coming in the middle of May" at least for the Three/UK customers. anyway, it will -soon or later- come to all our Desires.
Personally, I will be keep waiting until my contract expiry date comes (~Apr 2012) with better feelings against HTC if I get this eagerly awaited update. Cheers!

Samsung have just released GB upgrade for SGS in Europe which means they hv taken over HTC in terms of updates. Hope HTC reacts that quickly and will not leave us, Desire owners, alone.

I keep hoping that with the leaked rom that came out that the proper update/RUU will be out soon...
keep toying between rooting and trying the new rom on my phone - and waiting... at the moment (as I have my xoom to play with too) that I'm leaning on waiting
