I've been waiting to run the latest version of the stock EVO ROM that would let me maintain root, but with so much going on I can't say I'm sure I know which one is the latest as of today.
Anyone care to point me to where I can get the latest fully functioning ROM (Froyo I believe) that will let me stay rooted, and has 4G and the radio running, etc.?
My phone is rooted now (UnRevoked3 and UnRevoked Forever)..and I'm backed up with Titanium Backup, so hopefully that sets me in good shape.
Thanks,
JTT
This is a link to the Rooted Odexed Version of the last official Sprint Update:

There is a non-official 'leaked' update that is also available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773444
Note about the leaked update -- it is a non-official update from HTC/Sprint. I haven't used it and unlike the last official sprint update cannot personally guarantee that everything works properly. Read the thread to make sure if you decide to flash it.
If you live in an area w/out 4G, flash Cyanogen 6.0...its the top ROM out there in my opinion (I use and I live in a 4G area).

Hi all. I am a proud EVO user and generally love the phone. It's rooted for use w/ wifi tether. Not really using root much beyond that. Question, do I want or need the Sprint system update(s)? I had read that unrooting my phone could keep it from being rootable later on. Will the phone perform any better w/ the updates? Are there alternatives? My last phone was WM and it had a custom ROM. What do you all think?
Thanks!

Anything Sprint releases ends up on here rooted and ready for flashing (usually within hours). I would not do any ota updates knowing that.

Thanks, that being said, should I flash to a custom ROM? I'm sure all this has been asked and answered, so appologies to that. Also, if i do that, should I back up my current apps (what should I use) and when i restore can i restore to a newly flashed phone or is part of the back up process the system files?
People do create rooted versions of the stock ROMs that Sprint releases. So, you can try custom ROMs, but you don't HAVE to. You can get the latest one here:

Here's a thread where you can grab all of the latest Radio, WiMax, PRL, etc updates:

No, installing and official OTA can cause you to lose root. Download the rooted version ^ or stall the latest update for your rom.
Sorry if the title is a little nebulous. I have a G2 that's been S-OFF'd and has cyanogen's BaconBits but not a full CM. I'm getting bugged to install the OTA update which, I'm pretty sure is a Bad Idea without some prep beforehand. My Google-fu and xda search skills are apparently failing me, because I'm sure someone has the scoop.
Can someone point me to a thread or tutorial? If the best answer without having to do full CM is to just decline the OTA, I'm good with that - just tell me how to shut it up! I'm using wireless tether and some other root-required things so I don't want a 100% stock Gingerbread.
Thanks,
Brad
What do u mean "not do a full CM"? You can't just flash part of a rom. And baconbits isn't to be used passed CM 6.1 I believe

What I meant by "not a full CM" was BaconBits. I had pretty much assumed there was no BaconBits moving forward, so I think my immediate goal is to just keep what I have. Is there a way to "turn off" the update nagging?
Brad
How the hell are you even getting updates? Which rom exactly are you using? And unless you don't want root anymore you should definitely not install it. But know that just incase you accidentally do install it there is an exploit now. But I would probably verify that you really have s-off and root access and reinstall your rom.
I currently have the stock ROM with S-OFF and cyanogen's old "BaconBits" add-on, released prior to anyone creating custom ROMs. I'm considering one of the stock-but-rooted Gingerbread roms, but for now, I just want to block updates. Suggestions?
Brad
Same here..I'm fully stock rooted with s off and tp wake mod only..I don't want to upgrade bc none of the updates are really stock( all these pure stock ones all have things removed or other tweeks)..I like my phone the way it is and just want to not get bugged for updating..what do?
I'm pretty sure if you edit the build.prop to say HTC Vision instead of T-Mobile G2 the update notifications will cease. Use something like Root Explorer to navigate to /system and then edit the line that says "ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2". It'll be like the 15th line down.
I can't guarantee it'll work but it's worth a try.
Why don't you just get the stock rooted update from here in the dev section? That'd be just as easy and then you'd actually have the update as well.
Stock Gingerbread OTA
Yeap.. I found that thread after some searching and upgraded, upgraded the radio, did the gps fix, fix permission.. and its working fine no wipe no nothing. Only thing Im missing is my track pad wake. Also to the op.. I think if you uninstall the app updater with uninstaller for root you wont get bugged for the update any longer.
Also even after upgrading to 2.3.4 it was still telling me there was an update.. I had to update the radio for it to go away..so maybe a radio update is all youll need op
i have a similar question. i'm also on stock 2.2, never did any OTA's and also have baconbits (flashing LED when message waiting, etc.)
what i would like to know, if i update to gingerbread, will i be able to install baconbits over gingerbread or not? i just want to keep a stock rom.
thanks!

Baconbits if for 2.2 only; as it was abandoned when CM nightlies started. You might try Pershoot's kernel with stock 2.3 or just go all the way and get CM7.

Well, in the final analysis, I decided to go "all in". I realized after looking through the wiki that I had "label S-OFF" and not "radio S-OFF", and figured this could be an issue later on. So, I followed the instructions to get "radio S-OFF" and then tried to update my Clockwork recovery to the latest 3.x version; it didn't work (wouldn't boot into recovery). So, I tried an older version of 3.x (the one I had prior was a 2.5 something), and that did work.
Since I then had a fresh, fully rooted device as an starting point (with nandroid backup, of course), I decided to go for the gusto and install CM7. I had the foresight to do a Titanium Backup of my apps, but what I forgot to do was save my call log and SMS messages. So, I decided to exercise that nandroid backup; restored my 2.2 with BaconBits, saved the SMS and call log, then restored my CM7 that I had just saved 30 minutes before, and restored the SMS and call log. All of it worked like a champ.
So, I'm jammin' on the CM7, it's faster and better than my 2.2 with BaconBits, so I'm happy. I'll probably leave it like this until CM8, if there is such, and if it runs on G2.

hello im new to the htc phones. im currently running stock rooted and awoke up this morning to a foto update. how do i update to it and is even necessarily? or am i the only one who got the update...
Don't accept any update if you're rooted
We're comin from a pure power source.
As the previous poster said, do not accept the update. I turned of the checking for the updates in settings.
If you accept an OTA update you could lose root or end up with unpredictable results.
If there is a newer version than what you have and you want to remain stock you should be able to find that version (rooted) in the development forum. I believe this is the latest OTA update that has been rooted.
What version do you have? What version did the OTA update indicate?
it was updating from 4.24 to 4.53. Thank you the only reason im still on root b/c i wanted to do lots of reading before i switch roms there's a lot diff roms here im coming from a sgs4g didn't have nearly as much roms and diff kernels so crazy. what is in the update to even bother updating to it
I have been rooted since I got my Evo but actually stayed at 3.70 stock until a couple of months ago. I did not want to jump to Gingerbread until some of the issues were worked out (compass, voice to text not working in noisy environments). The wife was running 4.24 when it came out and then 4.53. We have now both jumped to the MikG 2.52 ROM.
If you are wanting to remain stock there are some worthwhile updates in 4.53. You can see the release history here.
There are several variants of the 4.53 ROM in development that are rooted. Some are strictly stock minimal changes (for root) and others have some useful enhancements but still look stock.
Some choices:
Rooted 4.53 (Available as odexed or deodexed. I prefer the odexed roms since they are a bit faster)
Rooted 4.53 with memory mods and native screen shot
i have a rooted evo running a sense based rom and im trying to swap my number over to the galaxy s2 and vice versa. ive been speaking with sprint and have been given the steps to do a automatic activation however its not working. i then tried to manually activate per the instructions given by sprint and still no go..anyone have a solution/fix for this in order to activate my evo again?
You say that you are rooted, are you on a custom rom as well. If yes, I hope it is a stable one. Otherwise you could also flash one of the froyo roms just in case as well and try the steps.
Btw at what step are you having an issue at?
Flash something built on the stock OTA update. You said you are running sense, but I work with a guy who had issues with the carrier when moving his number to the Evo 3D because he was using a 3.x based port (IE. Kingdom, Synergy). He flashed to Fresh 4.2.0.0 which is built on the first gingerbread update and everything worked that they told him to do after that. You could try that.
Earlier in the month I put the leaked version of AT&T ICS onto my Bell P930 (which leaked back in the spring sometime), only to find tons of bugs and a dip in battery life.
This is my first android device, and before putting ICS on it, I was really impressed with its performance.
I understand that ICS has officially been released by Bell and AT&T, so is there any way to get the leaked version of AT&T ICS off of my P930 and go back to my original Gingerbread software???(and then update to the actual Bell ICS)?
I am completely new to the Android system, and all the other threads about similar issues have given me dead ends.....anything helps
thanks
You can install the new release that just came out without having to go back to an older version. HOWEVER, if you aren't in a huge hurry, I'd recommend that you wait a few days for the Bell release to officially come out. Once it officially comes out, you will be able to install it by just running an application without any fuss (plus you'll get Bell's version which I imagine will have less bloatware than AT&T's version).
So, once it's officially releaed, you just need to make sure you have Windows USB drivers installed (if you already did it, you don't need to do it again), then install the Software Update program. Download links here: http://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/pro...p?customerModelCode=LGP930&initialTab=drivers
I don't think the update is available yet for Bell but you can try it.
You should wait for the official and then you can easily update. Or you could follow the unbricking guide and switch out the v10 kdz with the new v20. Or you could wait and see if there's a cwm version of the official ICS and follow the unbricking guide as is to get back to root amd cwm installed. Or you can unbrick, get root and cwm and install CM9 or CM10. I'd unbrick and get root/cwm. Then wait for a flashable/rooted version of the new leak. And in the mean time, install CM9 and CM10 and see what you think. Battery life on official is bad based on my first day. I'll be going back to CM10. This was just a novelty because I have two nitros.
