hello im new to the htc phones. im currently running stock rooted and awoke up this morning to a foto update. how do i update to it and is even necessarily? or am i the only one who got the update...
Don't accept any update if you're rooted
We're comin from a pure power source.
As the previous poster said, do not accept the update. I turned of the checking for the updates in settings.
If you accept an OTA update you could lose root or end up with unpredictable results.
If there is a newer version than what you have and you want to remain stock you should be able to find that version (rooted) in the development forum. I believe this is the latest OTA update that has been rooted.
What version do you have? What version did the OTA update indicate?
it was updating from 4.24 to 4.53. Thank you the only reason im still on root b/c i wanted to do lots of reading before i switch roms there's a lot diff roms here im coming from a sgs4g didn't have nearly as much roms and diff kernels so crazy. what is in the update to even bother updating to it
I have been rooted since I got my Evo but actually stayed at 3.70 stock until a couple of months ago. I did not want to jump to Gingerbread until some of the issues were worked out (compass, voice to text not working in noisy environments). The wife was running 4.24 when it came out and then 4.53. We have now both jumped to the MikG 2.52 ROM.
If you are wanting to remain stock there are some worthwhile updates in 4.53. You can see the release history here.
There are several variants of the 4.53 ROM in development that are rooted. Some are strictly stock minimal changes (for root) and others have some useful enhancements but still look stock.
Some choices:
Rooted 4.53 (Available as odexed or deodexed. I prefer the odexed roms since they are a bit faster)
Rooted 4.53 with memory mods and native screen shot

With Sprint announcing that they will be releasing Froyo within the next week or so, I am wondering what that means for my phone since it is rooted and running a custom ROM (BakedSnackbeta9.7). Could someone give me a brief "It means that..." for me?
It means the devs will have better access to HTC's code, which in turn will help them with some of the issues plaguing current froyo rooted roms (lack of 4g etc.)
It means, just like with any other update, don't accept the OTA if you want to keep root. There will be a new root process eventually, but why chance it? Just like with 2.1, the rooted roms will be better than stock.

and for now it means little as long as you dont take the OTA. I would expect to see the 2.1 rom devs moving to 2.2. I believe the Bakedpastries is the same dev as backedsnacks so you will likely see the 2.2 version replace the .1 version of the rom in the near future should you choose to flash it.
I've been waiting to run the latest version of the stock EVO ROM that would let me maintain root, but with so much going on I can't say I'm sure I know which one is the latest as of today.
Anyone care to point me to where I can get the latest fully functioning ROM (Froyo I believe) that will let me stay rooted, and has 4G and the radio running, etc.?
My phone is rooted now (UnRevoked3 and UnRevoked Forever)..and I'm backed up with Titanium Backup, so hopefully that sets me in good shape.
Thanks,
JTT
This is a link to the Rooted Odexed Version of the last official Sprint Update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352
There is a non-official 'leaked' update that is also available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773444
Note about the leaked update -- it is a non-official update from HTC/Sprint. I haven't used it and unlike the last official sprint update cannot personally guarantee that everything works properly. Read the thread to make sure if you decide to flash it.
If you live in an area w/out 4G, flash Cyanogen 6.0...its the top ROM out there in my opinion (I use and I live in a 4G area).
Even though I'll probably be on to a new phone by the time the Inc 2 receives its OTA ICS update, I nevertheless want to be able to upgrade to it when it arrives. My question is, will the nandroid backup I have (Android version 2.3.3 with superuser but none of the bloat removed) be able to receive it? Or will I need to go through the whole process of unrooting and restoring 2.3.4 first?

you wouldnt want to take the ota regardless as it will likely block root and might bring an hboot that cannot be reverted from
id imagine we d get a leak of the ota ahead of time or just wait for a dev to make an update.zip version of it once its pulled from the servers or a phone
I also had a question about the OTA update. I HTC unlocked and rooted with SU and CWM recovery. I do have some of the bloated apps uninstalled with Titanium Backup. As soon as I heard that the upgrade for ICS was coming out, I flashed the stock recovery from the most recent RUU. Does anyone forsee any problems recieving the ICS OTA with this setup?
Well, not sure I would have done it that way... with the stock recovery you lose CWM's capabilities waiting for Vzw to release the ICS upgrade, and that could take months and months. Additionally, if you accept the ICS OTA my guess is that you'll lose root as well, and be stuck with Vzw's typical bloatware until you re-root. And we don't know if the new OTA will be immediately re-rootable. Some of the previous upgrades have required reverting to earlier versions.
As nitsuj17 remarks a few posts earlier, I would imagine that once the ICS upgrade for the Dinc2 is released, somebody will quickly get hold of it and post up a version for us rooted folks and we can just flash it from CWM. And use TB or AntTek App manager or whatever tool is your favorite to freeze or delete the Vzw crap. That's what I'm planning to do...
n00b here, so apologies always preface my post. Ditched Apple and have come to the dark side
So, I have a a rooted stock image of 4.0.4 ICS and am very eager for the upcoming official release of Jelly Bean. I've gotten mixed answers from reading past posts, so I have a few questions
- Am I even able to receive OTA updates on my rooted device?
- If I OTA update on my rooted device, will it wipe it to a clean install?
- After the OTA upgrade, will it remain rooted?
- How stable are the JB ROMS already out there? I only ask because I need the safest path possible to this upgrade. Cannot afford any mess ups.

The only one of your questions I can answer is the stability of available ROMs. And I must say that most of the ROMs you can find in the development sections are extremely reliable. Flashing them is easy to do and will introduce you to a entirely new side of android.

I work in the IT field and consider myself fairly "well exposed" to tweaking/modding/hacking. I've done similar procedures on many other devices in the past, just not on devices I need to be stable. Let's say I flash a custom ROM. From then on, what are my options for upgrading in the future? I suppose it will have to be either un-root and flash stock or stay with the custom ROMs. In the end, (and this is where the community's opinion will help), I need to keep my device reliable, but would like to have the perks of a rooted device.
Thoughts?
P.S., Since you recommended custom ROMs, I'm assuming you have done this yourself. Did it wipe everything clean for you, or are you able to maintain your data through the upgrade?
I believe if you want to upgrade to an official update from a custom ROM you must unroot and convert back to stock via Odin. But honestly, the custom ROMs you'll find are farther advanced than what your provider will provide you with via updates. Now that I am rooted and running a custom ROM, I have no desire to ever go stock again.

If you are rooted on the stock "official" image (mrRobinsons method) you will get the OTA but it will break your root once you install it. If you want to keep Root, you need an app like Voodoo's OTA Root Keeper: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper

I downgraded my S3 from LALH1 to LALE8 using the method and root-injected stock roms in the No Tripping Flash Counter thread. Afterwards, I decided to go back to LALH1 by accepting the OTA update. Bad move as it ended up hard bricking my phone -- even recovery/download mode was inaccessible.
I'm not sure what was the cause of this and now I'm a bit paranoid with my S3. I flashed all sorts of custom roms on my old S without issue, so it's not like I'm a rookie. I'm still really not sure if it was related to being rooted, or some other issue. Maybe I should have done a factory reset after downgrading. Maybe my phone would have survived if I didn't skip installing CWM.
In any case, I think there's at least some risk with upgrading OTA from a rooted firmware.
So been while since I've done much rom flashing. Had an EVO for 2+ years and tried lots of ROMS, but then got the sprint GNEX because I just wanted vanilla android without having to mess with ROMS as much. As such, I'm just running stock 4.1.1, with it rooted for a few apps and wifi tethering which I flashed after rooting. Looking to update to the new stock Sprint 4.2.1 firmware, keeping root and wifi tethering. Back on the EVO, every time there was a new firmare update, someone would post a "stock rooted" ROM (not that I used them), that didn't have anything done to it, but can't seem to find that with the latest Sprint GNEX update, only one that seems to come close has been fiddled with, deodexed, causing some issues. I'm also not used to flashing without my data being on a removable SD card. So I'm wondering, is there a way to just flash a rooted version of the Sprint firmware, keeping my data and wifi tethering (or by just flashing a new 4.2.1 wifi tethering patch), or can I use OTA rootkeeper, flash the OTA update, and restore root? I've got latest TWRP recovery btw, which it seems I would have to change back to stock recovery to flash the OTA update correct? Thanks for any direction anyone can provide
First off, im not sure about wifi tethering, but it is an option on gsm android settings. I would use OTA rootkeeper, but you need the stock recovery first to accept the ota. Did you check this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. Swear I tried to search other threads before asking but somehow missed that one, looks like it should tell me what I need. Think I was looking too much in the development forum for a full ROM to flash, and missed that thread in the general forum about just applying the update. Thanks again!!
