Hi,
I have looked through all the information about rooting and then using the 2.2 RUU file to update to the generic 2.2 ROM. I just have a couple of question:
Can I still do this even though my phone is locked to Orange still? Or do I need to get an unlock code first? Does this also affect upgrading the radio?
When I create the Gold Card do I need to keep it - i.e do I need to buy another SD card make it a Gold Card and then keep it somewhere safe?
Finally, what is the best way of backing up the phone first.
Thanks
Best to make the gold card your usual card to save switching between them both as you'll need it for ALL future updates after debranding
Thanks, I have created the Gold Card now.
What about the phone being locked to Orange network? Can I still root without the phone then requiring an unlock code? Do I even need to root if I just want to install the stock 2.2 ROM from HTC?
You don't need to root to install a stock ROM, just the gold card and the RUU file

I been going round here and the web wondering how to do this. I have
hboot 0.83.0001
I made a gold card which seems to have worked out fine so far but no idea where to go from here about updating my phone from 2.1 3 network branded to a non branded firmware. I am not interested in any custom firmware or anything I don't care about extra apps I just want stable 2.2.
I was in exactly the same position as yourself, had a 3 branded desire with same bootloader.
I made a goldcard also but found I didn't need it, I used unrevoked3 to root the phone and install clockwork mod from which I installed a update.zip patch and then a rooted untouched 2.2 Rom and now the phone is still rooted, unbranded and running 2.2 like a charm. Sorry if this explanation is a bit vague.
The Rom I used was 2.09.405.8-update-bravo-stock-rooted-busybox-withradio-signed.zip
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Boot your phone is rooted something I am not interested in really as I want Offical 2.2 unbranded. If I have to root temp to get there I don't mind going hrough the process providing its safe enough. I just don't see the point of rooting as the cons outweight the goals as some apps are starting to detect rooted phones now and refusing to boot.
Go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/
username:shipped

and download this file to your PC:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Once downloaded, connect your Desire to your PC and make sure HTC Sync says it's connected. Then run the RUU file you've just downloaded.
If your Gold card is correct it will allow you to flash the stock 2.2 ROM - you'll also need the gold card for future updates (either OTA or RUU)

Which apps? I've not heard of this issue.
BTW - you should edit your thread title, because your use of the word "Vanilla" implies that you want to try a non-Sense ROM which would require you to root.

Dave

blizzard authenticator can detect if your phone is rooted and will not boot Blizzard say its for security reasons but I read on net it's not just this app that refuses to boot if it detects a root.

Thanks for this will probably try later I don't understand why I will need the gold card for future updates though??
You'll need your gold card because your phone is a branded phone - the CID code won't pass checks without the gold card, even though you've 'debranded' the handset
Thank you all for this most informative thread, and apologies for the minor hijack.
I have a tmobile branded desire and would also like to be running the stock 2.2 with sense.
Will the above process work for me ?
I was hoping to get the OTA updates OTA however, is there a way of doing this ?
Also, are there any benefits to removing the carrier sim lock even though I have no intention of using an alternative carrier sim ?
Thanks for your time.
edit: I have read a bit more, and, now knowing the warranty issues, I will not be attempting to modify the CID

Your link didnt work anyway once you click download theres an error as the sites been taken over.
Hi,
I'm new so please excuse any of my stupid questions.
I have an unbranded, unlocked HTC Desire, in Australia, apparently it was a t-mobile device. Being naive I didn't realize this could create issues with OTA updates - I know now though! I don't think it's rooted, but wouldn't know the difference. There are no telco logos etc.
My desire got stuck in a rebook loop when I installed the OTA update to android 2.2. It seems to me the update hasn't completed. I finally got restarted after removing the battery.
In about phone it says I have:
Android 2.2 installed
build 3.13.720.1 CL233262
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel 2.6.29.0cb9f166
I have
HBOOT 0.82
RADIO 4.06.00.02_2 if that's relevant.
The phone won't recognize my sim card or SD card and gets an error when I try to turn on wifi. For added joy it frequently force closes.
I tried to do a factory reset but it never seemed to complete. Then I turned on with vol down + power and did clear storage. It removed my data but didn't otherwise help.
I gather from reading various forums that I need to go back to the 2.1 version?
Do I need a goldcard to do this? How do I make one?
How do I know which file to use?
Is there anything else a newbie needs to know so I don't make a bad situation worse?
Thanks!
I think you should first downgrade to 2.1.
Also you are going to need a Goldcard, but i don't
know if you can make it without the phone working properly.
Try to find and install branded RUU in order to make the phone work and then proceed with making the goldcard and debranding.
Thanks for the links!
I'll take a deep breath and have a go. Looks like I'll need to get a microSD adaptor first.
It's better to start by searching a branded RUU suitable for your phone. At this point your phone's SD slot is unusable so you won't be able to make the goldcard.
IMO sd adapter is not needed, you might use the phone as a card reader (assuming that you have installed the branded RUU).
So I don't need a goldcard to install the RUU?
No but it has to be 2.2 and branded. I think it is also safe to try to install previous versions if you are not able to find a 2.2 RUU. Don't forget to check tel company's site, here and here.
I'd recommend you root the phone (no goldcard required) and install a custom rom (mine will work). That will get the phone running normally again, then you can create a goldcard and run official unrooted software if you want.

SD card is required so you are going to need a card reader, as you can't use your phone at this moment. Or you can try unrevoked.
The r6 root method is obsolete now, and shouldn't be used. unrevoked3 might not work, it depends on how far the upgrade got before failing.
How would I root the phone? Do I use the usb cable and run a file?
If I shouldn't use unrevoked where can I find one I can safely use? It's all new to me.
Unrevoked is what you should use. You need to enable USB debugging and run the file.
If it works you'll end up in custom recovery, where you can install a rooted ROM.
I was downloading an RUU from TMO, but it was taking forever so I guess I won't be doing anything until tomorrow when I have a faster connection.
If you have an SLCD screen then running that is really not a good idea.
OK. So do I copy the custom ROM to the SD card before I root the phone or do I run it on the PC as well?
Yeah I don't think I have an SLCD screen, but would rather not take unnecessary risks.
Yes, you'll need the custom rom on the sdcard so will need to copy that separately. Unrevoked3 runs on the PC/Mac. If you have no card reader it's possible to upload the rom to the sdcard while in recovery, but it's a bit fiddly.
If you're certain you have an AMOLED screen then the t mobile RUU should work.
My phone came in July so I think it's AMOLED.
Looks like unrevoked3 is down at the moment with a redirect to unrevoked2.
I should be able to get the ROM on the SD card with a friend's non-android phone. Do I need a goldcard though as that may be a problem with my phone down.
Just follow the link to download version 3.14 (it's still unrevoked3).
No goldcard is needed to root or install a custom rom.
OK. Thanks for your patience! I guess I need to rename the ROM update.zip as I've seen mentioned elsewhere before I save it to the SD card.
I'll give it a go and post the results once I'm done , tomorrow I hope
You don't need to rename it. That's just for stock recovery. In custom recovery you get a basic filemanager where you can select the file.
Hi,
I recently had wifi issues with OTA update of HTC desire (patch). this i understand because I didnt have goldcard during the OTA.
So , I decided to make my everyday card (16Gb) into a gold card.... Done without any trouble.
My doubt is..
Should I use the update once more in this gold card also to continue receiving future OTA updates ?
In other words...do the phones identify the goldcards used for flashing and need the same goldcard for future updates???
(I know its a very silly question...but couldn't resist it..as I am naive...)...
request somebody to answer...
thanks in advance...

no you dont need the same goldcard, you could use one for one update and a diff one for another, dosent matter
Not naive, good question, something I wondered about too.
If I make my main card a gold card and use that after using a previous goldcard will it cause problems?
Also is there a reverse gold card procedure should I want to revert my desire to T Mobile OTA in the future without a gold card ?

i dont understand what you mean by a reverse goldcard if you have a t-mobile branded desire and you use a goldcard to flash a generic rom, you can still flash back to your branded rom without the need for a goldcard

To reverse it use a T-Mobile RUU, unless you have an SLCD screen!
I don't think the T-Mobile FroYo RUU is available yet.
Just check shipped-roms hopefully it'll turn up soon.
Thanks, I thought I would have to unroot or do something else.
So to confirm
T Mobile 1st wave Desire non SLCD
Gold Card made
HTC Rom 2.1 flashed with gold card in
OTA Upgrade to 2.2 with gold card in
OTA upgrade recent patch with gold card in - current state
If I wanted now to revert for example for a warranty issue:
I could just flash 2.1 T Mobile original rom without goldcard to get back to out of the box condition
I could then do the T Mobile OTA to 2.2 when it is released again with no worries about gold card not being present and killing the wifi connection.
Thanks for clarifying, I think it will help folks with Gold card concerns.

noooooooooo, if you are using the froyo ota you cant use a ruu to go back to 2.1 because you have the newer hboot!! if you flashed a custom rom to get froyo with the new hboot removed you can ....
Also found this thread with video tutorials, very good
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
So what can you do if you have the new hboot from the OTA upgrade from HTC to go back to T-mobile 2.1 out of the box standard?
i just recently created a gold card 4 my htc desire hd but my question is do i need to keep it in my phone even after my rom is flashed? or can i remove it and pop in my 16gig class10?
As far as I'm aware the Goldcard is there to stop your phone from checking Client ID things when you flash a stock (unbranded) RUU. Custom ROMs by definition don't care who your carrier is, etc. so you don't need the goldcard in there.
But keep it safe, you'll need it if you ever have to go back to stock.
Exctly .. you require a goldcard only when you are flashing stock rom once its done and you have a bootable rom, you do not required the goldcard.. and as mentioned by gretch.. keep it safe if in future you want to falsh stock rom.
it seems I got a firmware update sometime last month, and completely forgot I had used visonary+ previously.
My phone was bought without CID, now it has been branded, to which network I have no clue but I assume t-mobile as I used it in the USA when visiting.
I thought nothing of it until now as I am trying to change to the ACE Gingerbread rom official.
So I built a goldcard which does not change the CID, I am unable to run visionary+ or any similar app to temp root.
I am however able to use the adb root, but using root checker, it still says it is not rooted.
I am just dumbfounded, I want to down grade my phone, so I can upgrade again, or just upgrade.
I have gone through all the tutorials for all the different methods and I always come back to the CID warning when flashing.
Gold card fail
Rooting fail
upgrading fail
downgrading fail
Used gold card tool fails
used hxd successfull to make a gold card, but fails.
Anyone can give me some feedback or suggestions?
Thanks.
Taking this one step at a time, you need to downgrade. To do that you need a gold card.
Not a 100% sure from your post so please clarify if you have been able to successfully create a gold card?
After that, get an early ROM and install with goldcard inserted.
Let me know when you get to that step.
I found the issue. I had made the gold card, however the sd card I was using had a bad sector in it, causing it to not read.
After trying a second micro sd card, the downgrade worked. and now it flashed and updated properly.
Thanks!
Yea, I had follow topic on xda and successful downgrade.
