Hi everyone.
Im new to the Rooting scene, and im kinda noob. Ive rooted my phone and Goldcarded my MS(4GB).
And today I downloaded ROMmanager and partitioned my SD card also known as my Goldcard. IS this stilll a goldcard now or have i messed up everything?
thanks.
You should be able to repartition your Gold Card and have it remain entirely as FAT32. It's your other SD Card (normal) that you are meant to partition, not the Gold Card.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
haha, well the problem is, I only have one memcard. So ur saying it isnt possible to partition a goldcard and use it as as both GoldCard and a normal stick? That was mainly my intention with the card so far
BTW, do I need Goldcardx to install custom ROMs and enter the custom recovery menu etc.? or is it just to root the phone?
It's just to root your phone. You don't need it anymore to flash new roms.
Afaik there aren't any problems with using the goldcard as regular SD card.
you can enter recovery without goldcard, but you'll need it in future to install roms

No you don't - once you made your Desire "generic", you shouldn't need your goldcard again just to flash a new custom ROM.
Regards,
Dave
I did everything with goldcard inside, so I'm not sure, but as I remember, people who debranded their Orange phones to 1.15, couldn't do successfull OTA to 1.21 (wifi stopped working) because there was no goldcard inside. Once they put goldcard inside, they could do complete OTA (although phone simlocked ):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697194
Based on that, I always used goldcard to flash roms, but I could be wrong, I'm relatively new with this
Hey I'm new aswell and I used my goldcard to root and then partitioned it for apps2sd+ and its still all working fine so I don't think your phone will explode or stop working
dont worri even if you have partitioned your sd card, it will still work as a goldcard
Hi,
I'm new so please excuse any of my stupid questions.
I have an unbranded, unlocked HTC Desire, in Australia, apparently it was a t-mobile device. Being naive I didn't realize this could create issues with OTA updates - I know now though! I don't think it's rooted, but wouldn't know the difference. There are no telco logos etc.
My desire got stuck in a rebook loop when I installed the OTA update to android 2.2. It seems to me the update hasn't completed. I finally got restarted after removing the battery.
In about phone it says I have:
Android 2.2 installed
build 3.13.720.1 CL233262
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel 2.6.29.0cb9f166
I have
HBOOT 0.82
RADIO 4.06.00.02_2 if that's relevant.
The phone won't recognize my sim card or SD card and gets an error when I try to turn on wifi. For added joy it frequently force closes.
I tried to do a factory reset but it never seemed to complete. Then I turned on with vol down + power and did clear storage. It removed my data but didn't otherwise help.
I gather from reading various forums that I need to go back to the 2.1 version?
Do I need a goldcard to do this? How do I make one?
How do I know which file to use?
Is there anything else a newbie needs to know so I don't make a bad situation worse?
Thanks!
I think you should first downgrade to 2.1.
Also you are going to need a Goldcard, but i don't
know if you can make it without the phone working properly.
Try to find and install branded RUU in order to make the phone work and then proceed with making the goldcard and debranding.
Thanks for the links!
I'll take a deep breath and have a go. Looks like I'll need to get a microSD adaptor first.
It's better to start by searching a branded RUU suitable for your phone. At this point your phone's SD slot is unusable so you won't be able to make the goldcard.
IMO sd adapter is not needed, you might use the phone as a card reader (assuming that you have installed the branded RUU).
So I don't need a goldcard to install the RUU?
No but it has to be 2.2 and branded. I think it is also safe to try to install previous versions if you are not able to find a 2.2 RUU. Don't forget to check tel company's site, here and here.
I'd recommend you root the phone (no goldcard required) and install a custom rom (mine will work). That will get the phone running normally again, then you can create a goldcard and run official unrooted software if you want.

SD card is required so you are going to need a card reader, as you can't use your phone at this moment. Or you can try unrevoked.
The r6 root method is obsolete now, and shouldn't be used. unrevoked3 might not work, it depends on how far the upgrade got before failing.
How would I root the phone? Do I use the usb cable and run a file?
If I shouldn't use unrevoked where can I find one I can safely use? It's all new to me.
Unrevoked is what you should use. You need to enable USB debugging and run the file.
If it works you'll end up in custom recovery, where you can install a rooted ROM.
I was downloading an RUU from TMO, but it was taking forever so I guess I won't be doing anything until tomorrow when I have a faster connection.
If you have an SLCD screen then running that is really not a good idea.
OK. So do I copy the custom ROM to the SD card before I root the phone or do I run it on the PC as well?
Yeah I don't think I have an SLCD screen, but would rather not take unnecessary risks.
Yes, you'll need the custom rom on the sdcard so will need to copy that separately. Unrevoked3 runs on the PC/Mac. If you have no card reader it's possible to upload the rom to the sdcard while in recovery, but it's a bit fiddly.
If you're certain you have an AMOLED screen then the t mobile RUU should work.
My phone came in July so I think it's AMOLED.
Looks like unrevoked3 is down at the moment with a redirect to unrevoked2.
I should be able to get the ROM on the SD card with a friend's non-android phone. Do I need a goldcard though as that may be a problem with my phone down.
Just follow the link to download version 3.14 (it's still unrevoked3).
No goldcard is needed to root or install a custom rom.
OK. Thanks for your patience! I guess I need to rename the ROM update.zip as I've seen mentioned elsewhere before I save it to the SD card.
I'll give it a go and post the results once I'm done , tomorrow I hope
You don't need to rename it. That's just for stock recovery. In custom recovery you get a basic filemanager where you can select the file.
Hey all,
I have a quick question or two about goldcards and what they do and when they are needed. I created one as per the instructions on this page
"broadbandgenie.co.uk/blog/20100822-how-debrand-htc-desire-update-froyo" and it allowed me to load stock Froyo 2.2 onto my Virgin Mobile branded Desire.
Strangely I now seem to be able to use other SIM's too, but thats not really relevant.
My questions are as follows...
1) What exactly did this goldcard do that allowed me to load an unbranded Froyo ROM
2) I've since rooted my phone with unrEVOked 3.21, do I still need the goldcard to load OTA updates or a new custom ROM in the future?
3) What ever the answer to question 2, can an explanation be givenas to why?
And slightly OT, but I've read some horror stories about wrong radios or SPL's(?) killing phones permanently. So on that subject..
1) Do I need to make sure I have the right radio each time I load a custom ROM?
2) If so, where do I get the radio files and how do I know which is right?
3) Would an OTA update take care of the above for me automatically?
4) Are HBOOT and SPL the same thing?
Again, apologies for asking things that have undoubtedly been answered before but I'd like to be fully armed with the knowledge I need before I go any further with my Desire.
Many thanks,
Nathan.
First batch:
1. The gold card in affect masks the CID of the phone and makes the phone appear to be a generic handset so it can accept any official ROM
2. If you've only rooted the stock ROM you were on and are going to continue to use it then yes you'll need the gold card for ALL future OTA updates. This is for the same reason as point 1. If you're going to use a custom ROM then you don't need a gold card at all as rooting via unrEVOked can be done without a gold card.
3. See points 1 and 2
Second set:
1. Yes, all custom ROMs threads have a recommended radio stated in the first post
2. There's a thread for radios in the Dev section, see point 1 for other info
3. Yes it will, but see point 2 of first batch answers
4. SPL is WinMo phones, HBOOT is the Android equivalent
Fantastic! Thanks for that.
So for my own clarification, the goldcard bypasses some security in the official ROM's, be they branded or not? But the custom ROM's have no such security restrictions meaning I do not need the gold card?
And from where I am now, stock Froyo rooted with unrEVOked, I am in a decent position to simlpy load on LeeDroid ROM for example just by the method he describes in his official post?
Would I at any point need to upgrade my HBOOT from 0.93 manually?
Many thanks! I think I am finally getting my head round the various areas of Android/ROM's etc.
Nathan
Yes. Say you had a T-Mobile branded Desire and tried to flash a generic RUU file to it it would fail the CID check. A gold card effectively masks this so the RUU file thinks you have a CID unlocked Desire and allows you to flash it. Just remember to leave the gold card in the phone as you'll need it for OTA updates as they come along (and they'll remove root access in the process).
With rooting you will have a custom recovery which doesn't run the check an official RUU does so you can just flash the ZIP file without any issues
If you're on rooted FroYo now then you'll already be on HBOOT 0.93 so you can't forget about that. The HBOOT is only changed on official updates
Thanks again Eddy
I'm slowly but surely getting more knowledge and in return becoming more intrigued about I can do with the phone. Maybe one day I'll be the one handing out advice
Cheers,
Nathan.
Hi -
I'm wanting to install a generic stock froyo rom on my phone to replace my Orange branded rom (mainly to rid it of bloatware). I'm wondering if it matters what radio version I use? I found the following two:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.1_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121684.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
Which one would I install? Also - would I lose root access if I restore a stock rom?
Thanks.
I would use RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe since it seems to be the newer of the two.
If you're going to just bebrand your phone don't use either of them as they're OLD...use either 2.10.405.2 or 2.29.405.2. Those 2 RUUs you posted up are the ORIGINAL 2.1 RUUs
And yes you will lose root as flashing an RUU restores the phone to stock. Make sure you have your gold card in the phone as flashing anything other than an Orange RUU without it will fail
Why would I need a goldcard if I'm flashing a stock rom? Do I need a goldcard to flash custom roms? This rom doesn't come with radio:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
Why do I have t install radio separately? Can I not just keep the existing radios on there.
This is quite confusing.
It all depends on what ROM your phone originally came with. If you have always been unbranded (as in always been on an x.xx.405.x ROM version) then you don't need a gold card to flash a ROM of the same version. A gold card is needed if you have a branded phone and want to flash a different ROM version, e.g. you are on T-Mobile and want to flash a stock WWE ROM
Custom ROMs don't need a gold card as it's all done via the custom recovery that is flashed when you root using unrEVOked. Custom ROMs tend not to have a radio included so you flash them yourself. Stock RUUs are an 'all-in-one' package and flash everything
In your case, you are on Orange so if you wanna flash any RUU you will need a gold card as there isn't an Orange RUU available. If you want a stock unbranded ROM then download the one in my signature (click it as it's a link to the RUU)

I rooted using unrevoked - so already have the custom recovery installed. Surely I can just use that to flash the stock rom? I know there is a process where you 'debrand' the phone, which requires a gold card, but didn't realise it needed a gold card when flashing through root.

If you want to flash a rooted Stock-based (but not actually stock) ROM, sure, you can use recovery.. But if what you want is to take it for warranty, you would need to remove the custom recovery flashed during the rooting process. So you need an RUU, or a PB*.zip file based on the RUU (latter can be flashed without a pc). A goldcard is needed for any change of RUUs-branded->unbranded and viceversa..

So based on what you're saying, if I installed something like this (rooted stock):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
I wouldn't need a gold card? basically I don't want to install a custom rom - I just want to install a clean froyo rom without the orange bloatware. It doesn't matter to me whether it is rooted ot not rooted (which if it is the case, I prob will root again anyway).
So the quickest way from what I can gather for me to achieve that is to flash a rooted froyo rom? do i need to update the radio aswell, or can i keep my current radio version?
That should do, what radio are you on at the mo?

Hmm..What you want is to get rid of the Orange bloatware.. You don't actually care about having root access..
You can:
[A] Flash a new generic (WWE-Worldwide English) RUU (Rom Upgrade Utility), a program designed by HTC to upgrade ROMs. Generic RUU gives you everything that HTC designed to be on the phone with no crap from Orange. This does not give you root access. You basically get an unbranded phone like the ones released by HTC elsewhere in the world. This does need goldcard right now, since you're debranding the phone.
[B] Root the phone and install a custom stock ROM like the one you posted the link too. You can install whichever ROM you like, and since rooting process gives you a recovery ROM, you can change ROMs any time you want just by adding a file to your sdcard and rebooting the phone and choosing an option. This option too removes bloatware. For rooting process, you dont need a goldcard.
Later
But, if you later want to take the phone back for warranty purpose at any time (after using method B), at that point you might (most likely) or might not (depending on the method used) need the goldcard to flash an RUU since Orange RUUs are not available right now (though there is a method posted on XDA which helps unroot Orange phones). If Orange RUUs become available at a later date, then you may not need a goldcard.
Believe me, creating a goldcard is the least of your worries. It's nearly effortless (not at all something major like rooting or unrooting) and gives you freedom from worry, since it means you can in 98% cases, recover from a softbrick if something goes wrong. Even if you dont create a goldcard, download this goldcard tool, connect your phone and choose the first button (Get CID) after connecting your goldcard. Once the CID is read, you should store it in a text file. You can then complete the rest of the steps later. But this is not recommended since goldcard creation does not work for all memory card types and makes.

Many thanks for clearing that up. All makes sense now. Think I already have a Gold Card from a previous unenergetic debranding attempt. Will hunt that out and keep in a safe place.
Best thing is to make your day to day card your gold card as you can just leave it in the phone and forget about it. Updates will also install correctly as you'd need the gold card to do an OTA update
Sorry to butt in

Hi after spending about a week reading through forums I managed to change my friends HTC HD2 to android using the LEO "Stock" NAND Android ROM.
All went great thanks to the excellent instuctions on here.
I then put z4root on and app2sd and all worked great.
I then deceicded to buy an HTC desire for myself not the HD one.
However maybe I should have done some more reading first as I cant find a way to root device to install apps to sd card.
I dont really want to flash another rom as phone is new and under warrant. Can you root without flashing a new rom or somehow move them to sd
Have I just made a huge mistake buying this phone or is there a way.
All help appreciated thanks
How does rooting void the warranty less than flashing a custom rom? Don't answer cause it doesn't.
It is possible to root and keep the current rom, but if you want to enable A2SD then it's a lot of work (not talking about the froyo crap).
So if you want A2SD is suggest you root with Unrevoked and flash Leedroid. Don't forget to make a ext partition on the sd card before flashing.
Disclaimer: You are the only one responsible for you phone, no one else!
You can root the stock ROM as TheGhost 233 said. You can also use AlphaRev's S-Off as well on it if you wanted.
As for me, I couldn't be bothered with A2SD so I just S-Off'd and then used the n1table to increase my internal memory. The ROM I use uses bugger all in the system. Also, you can move apps to SD card anyway if you have 2.2+.

No, I don't think you've made a mistake buying this particular phone....seriously....
As for rooting, use the Unrevoked method which is the easiest....Alpharev S-OFF works too ( I think you can't flash custom HBOOT images if your phone has the latest PVT-4 NAND..better check on that..)

Thanks for the replies I am waiting on phone getting delivered today from virgin.
I will post back when I get a chance to have a look at it.
I got root using unrevoked3 but my phone is s-on
My phone is on virgin branded and I presume locked though not tried another sin in it yet.
If I wanted to flash leedroid Rom onto phone what steps would I have to do
I put on setcpu so that seems to have helped battery life but would like custom Rom on
Thanks

Hold on wait a minute you don't have to flash a new ROM at all your v-mobile phone should be on froyo (android 2.2) current software version 2.22.351.3 which already lets you put some apps onto your sd card at the moment i only have 3 downloaded apps that are on phone only mode.
[edit] you can also add downloaded apps from computer to sd card and install with Astro - Every one that i have done this with enabled move to sd and i still have 98mb of space to store more apps (even with the ones that are installed by v-mobile)
Thanks for reply yes it is on new update but I thought some of the modded roms were using less battery power so I wanted to know how to install one.
I have rooted using unrevoked 3 but i notice my phone is s-on
Just wanted to know if someone could advise me on the steps to do this or point me to a guide.
Will look at that astro as well thanks.
I have modinstall also
The issue you have is should things go wrong you can't return to stock as the Virgin RUU hasn't been leaked, so make a gold card now before you continue. This way, should the worst happen, you can flash the generic HTC RUU to get back to stock
Then look at custom ROMs using A2SD+ - most do it these days but best to check the ROM thread in question to make sure. Then partition your SD card and flash the ROM and you're good to go.
S-OFF isn't something you NEED - just means you can make changes to the OS without having to go into recovery first. If you're not going to be making a lot of changes bar a new ROM then leave that for now

This is what i was thinking and knowing v-mobile if you can't find a stock ROM to flash back to may have no warranty. That's the only reason i havent messed with mine
Early version (2.1) are about so you could downgrade using the guide on here but I don't know if it'd work (depends on the HBOOT)
Either way, a gold card is needed
