Hi everyone.
Im new to the Rooting scene, and im kinda noob. Ive rooted my phone and Goldcarded my MS(4GB).
And today I downloaded ROMmanager and partitioned my SD card also known as my Goldcard. IS this stilll a goldcard now or have i messed up everything?
thanks.
You should be able to repartition your Gold Card and have it remain entirely as FAT32. It's your other SD Card (normal) that you are meant to partition, not the Gold Card.

haha, well the problem is, I only have one memcard. So ur saying it isnt possible to partition a goldcard and use it as as both GoldCard and a normal stick? That was mainly my intention with the card so far
BTW, do I need Goldcardx to install custom ROMs and enter the custom recovery menu etc.? or is it just to root the phone?
It's just to root your phone. You don't need it anymore to flash new roms.
Afaik there aren't any problems with using the goldcard as regular SD card.
you can enter recovery without goldcard, but you'll need it in future to install roms

No you don't - once you made your Desire "generic", you shouldn't need your goldcard again just to flash a new custom ROM.
Regards,
Dave
I did everything with goldcard inside, so I'm not sure, but as I remember, people who debranded their Orange phones to 1.15, couldn't do successfull OTA to 1.21 (wifi stopped working) because there was no goldcard inside. Once they put goldcard inside, they could do complete OTA (although phone simlocked ):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697194
Based on that, I always used goldcard to flash roms, but I could be wrong, I'm relatively new with this
Hey I'm new aswell and I used my goldcard to root and then partitioned it for apps2sd+ and its still all working fine so I don't think your phone will explode or stop working
dont worri even if you have partitioned your sd card, it will still work as a goldcard

Hi,
I'm new so please excuse any of my stupid questions.
I have an unbranded, unlocked HTC Desire, in Australia, apparently it was a t-mobile device. Being naive I didn't realize this could create issues with OTA updates - I know now though! I don't think it's rooted, but wouldn't know the difference. There are no telco logos etc.
My desire got stuck in a rebook loop when I installed the OTA update to android 2.2. It seems to me the update hasn't completed. I finally got restarted after removing the battery.
In about phone it says I have:
Android 2.2 installed
build 3.13.720.1 CL233262
Baseband version 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel 2.6.29.0cb9f166
I have
HBOOT 0.82
RADIO 4.06.00.02_2 if that's relevant.
The phone won't recognize my sim card or SD card and gets an error when I try to turn on wifi. For added joy it frequently force closes.
I tried to do a factory reset but it never seemed to complete. Then I turned on with vol down + power and did clear storage. It removed my data but didn't otherwise help.
I gather from reading various forums that I need to go back to the 2.1 version?
Do I need a goldcard to do this? How do I make one?
How do I know which file to use?
Is there anything else a newbie needs to know so I don't make a bad situation worse?
Thanks!
I think you should first downgrade to 2.1.
Also you are going to need a Goldcard, but i don't
know if you can make it without the phone working properly.
Try to find and install branded RUU in order to make the phone work and then proceed with making the goldcard and debranding.
Thanks for the links!
I'll take a deep breath and have a go. Looks like I'll need to get a microSD adaptor first.
It's better to start by searching a branded RUU suitable for your phone. At this point your phone's SD slot is unusable so you won't be able to make the goldcard.
IMO sd adapter is not needed, you might use the phone as a card reader (assuming that you have installed the branded RUU).
So I don't need a goldcard to install the RUU?
No but it has to be 2.2 and branded. I think it is also safe to try to install previous versions if you are not able to find a 2.2 RUU. Don't forget to check tel company's site, here and here.
I'd recommend you root the phone (no goldcard required) and install a custom rom (mine will work). That will get the phone running normally again, then you can create a goldcard and run official unrooted software if you want.

SD card is required so you are going to need a card reader, as you can't use your phone at this moment. Or you can try unrevoked.
The r6 root method is obsolete now, and shouldn't be used. unrevoked3 might not work, it depends on how far the upgrade got before failing.
How would I root the phone? Do I use the usb cable and run a file?
If I shouldn't use unrevoked where can I find one I can safely use? It's all new to me.
Unrevoked is what you should use. You need to enable USB debugging and run the file.
If it works you'll end up in custom recovery, where you can install a rooted ROM.
I was downloading an RUU from TMO, but it was taking forever so I guess I won't be doing anything until tomorrow when I have a faster connection.
If you have an SLCD screen then running that is really not a good idea.
OK. So do I copy the custom ROM to the SD card before I root the phone or do I run it on the PC as well?
Yeah I don't think I have an SLCD screen, but would rather not take unnecessary risks.
Yes, you'll need the custom rom on the sdcard so will need to copy that separately. Unrevoked3 runs on the PC/Mac. If you have no card reader it's possible to upload the rom to the sdcard while in recovery, but it's a bit fiddly.
If you're certain you have an AMOLED screen then the t mobile RUU should work.
My phone came in July so I think it's AMOLED.
Looks like unrevoked3 is down at the moment with a redirect to unrevoked2.
I should be able to get the ROM on the SD card with a friend's non-android phone. Do I need a goldcard though as that may be a problem with my phone down.
Just follow the link to download version 3.14 (it's still unrevoked3).
No goldcard is needed to root or install a custom rom.
OK. Thanks for your patience! I guess I need to rename the ROM update.zip as I've seen mentioned elsewhere before I save it to the SD card.
I'll give it a go and post the results once I'm done , tomorrow I hope
You don't need to rename it. That's just for stock recovery. In custom recovery you get a basic filemanager where you can select the file.
I have been using Oxygen 2.0 r7 with the oxygen hboot(s-off) and i decided to try a different rom. Firstly i changed my hboot which appeared to work properly but after this i was not able to install any custom roms. To remedy this, i had to use RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5 So i now have an unrooted phone with s-off. My questions are:
Is this rootable?
My sd card was created as a goldcard and has worked fine so far(debranded vodaphone) however i have just completely wiped and formatted all of this using Mini Tool pPartition Wizard. Does this mean it will lose its ability as a goldcard?
How do i know if this is still a valid goldcard?
Any help would be much appreciated.
P.S. I tried to run unrevoked but my phone was not recognised despite having all of the correct drivers.
Yes it is rootable, best to remake your gold card just in case
i just recently created a gold card 4 my htc desire hd but my question is do i need to keep it in my phone even after my rom is flashed? or can i remove it and pop in my 16gig class10?
As far as I'm aware the Goldcard is there to stop your phone from checking Client ID things when you flash a stock (unbranded) RUU. Custom ROMs by definition don't care who your carrier is, etc. so you don't need the goldcard in there.
But keep it safe, you'll need it if you ever have to go back to stock.
Exctly .. you require a goldcard only when you are flashing stock rom once its done and you have a bootable rom, you do not required the goldcard.. and as mentioned by gretch.. keep it safe if in future you want to falsh stock rom.
i have started flashing rom on my desire recently... so far i flashed cm7 and now miui... i have rooted using unrevoked and installed clockworkmod recovery.... each time i flash, i do a backup using clockworkmod... my question... if i get a problem with something during flash or if i mess up with someting that bricks my desire... will i be able to recover using my backups with clockworkmod recovery?
i mean do i need to take additional steps to ensure that i can always recover from a brick? e.g. on psp, there is pandora battery that can recover a brick.. on the wii, you can also recover from a brick using a nand backup.. is there similar thing on desire? is it the clockworkmod recovery...
i will probably flash back to stock rom soon(btw can i use the backup i made with clockworkmod to get back to stock rom?) and i want to be on the safe side so that i can recover from any failure whatsoever.
No, if you brick your desire it's end of story. However lot of people confuse bricks with other boot issues. It's pretty hard to properly brick a device if you understand what you are doing.

yup how can i brick my device? through installing custom rom? power failure? install radio?
what is the goldcard thing? i have unlocked phone, do i need to create a goldcard? when following the unrevoked root tuto, there was no mention about the goldcard thing
Shouldn't need a goldcard when unbranded, however I belief that there are some reports of unbranded phones needing goldcards for the newer ruu's. You can always make one just to be sure.
Flashing roms won't brick your device unless some really strange stuff happens. Don't know what that would have to be though.
A bad radio install will brick your phone. Either if the zip is corrupted or if you lose power during flashing. When altering the bootloader (s-offing or flashing new hboot) power failure will also brick your phone, so will corrupted files. I thought there was a third way to brick your phone but can't think if it right now.

It's hit and miss with the gold card. I needed one, and it's unbranded. Go figgure. As the above poster said, better to make on, and save a future headache.

thx! so i continue flashing custom rom .. i have already installed latest radio so don't think i will flash radio or modify bootloader at least for a while now
edit: can i make a golcard if i am on a custom rom and have already rooted my phone?
Goldcard is not related to your phone.. it is related with your memory card.. and you can make it with any working android phone... and use in any android phone.. as it is the way to by pass the customer id check.
You can go here to make goldcard http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
If you are not good with adb part... just search for Goldcard Helper in market and . that app will give you your reverse CID so than you can follow from step 7 from above guide.
Hope that help
can i use the sd card i am using to store my data and data2ext parition? or i need a seperate empty card?
NO .. a goldcard should be a single fat32 partition .. thought formating doesnt remove ur goldcard as it is your sector zero.. but too being safe side.. dont use the goldcard sd card. My suggestion take any 1 gb or even 512mb if available sd card and make it as a goldcard and keep it somewhere safe
Hi. Please could someone give me some help with my query with regard to Goldcards. My HTC Desire is on O2 and I have rooted it with the Unrevoked3, turned S-Off with Revolutionary's tool and installed the latest ClockworkMod Recovery version 5.0.2.0. Everthing appears to be ok and now I want to install one of the cutsom ROMS that makes use of the EXT3/4 partition on my phone's SD card. My Desire is currently on official Froyo 2.2 from O2 and my question is: Do I still need to make a Goldcard for custom ROM flashing?
If I do need it, can the SD Card that I make into a GoldCard still be used normally as a memory card with Ext partition?
Many thanks for anyone's advice on this.

no, a goldcard is only required when you use a RUU. The purpose if a goldcard is to make the phone ignore the CID of the device, and let you use a RUU that is not meant for your particular phone. phones you get on contract are usually branded to the network you are on, flashing a WWE RUU (worldwide English) effectively debrands the phone and gets rid of anything that has anything to do with e.g. O2 e.g. their personal splash screen etc. this is not possible without the goldcard, as the CID of the RUU will not match the phone, therefore a goldcard makes the phone ignore the CID, and flashes the RUU anyway.
Thanks bortak for the advice.
