[Q] APPS2SD on Fresh 3.2.0.0 (Froyo) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done a search on the forums here, and haven't been able to come to a solid answer on this... I went completely App crazy and ended up almost filling my Evo's internal Storage. I used sdmove to move whatever apps supported move to SD over to the SD card. Now I have about 68mb of storage left, but I feel like that too will run out quickly.
Will APPS2SD allow me to move apps that don't nativly support Froyo's Move to SD over to the SD card? Would it have any ill effects on the phone?
If it's safe to set up, how would I go about setting APPS2SD up? Do I just partition the card with an ext partition via RA recovery?

that is correct. after you partition your sd card go into terminal emulator and type a2sd check. It will tell you if it is working. Next type a2sd help. That will show you all the commands and descriptions

Also you can move the davlink cache too the sd card and that frees up a lot of space too.

Type "a2sd help". This will give u a list of all commands that apps2d has to offer. Type "a2sd cachesd" to move David to your SD partition.

OK, so I enabled ap2sd, and moved the cache over to SD. WOW, that gave alot of space. Before I moved the cache, I also noticed that my space boosted up to over 200mb. Does this mean all my apps were allready moved over to the SDCard? If so, does that also mean that all my apps will be installed to the SDcard from now on?
I just wanna make sure that I don't manually need to move them, and If I do, I need to figure out how I do that. ap2sd help didn't tell me how to manually move apps, so I am assuming its all done automatically now.

Bumping this thread. I'd like to know that answer to your question as well.

The apps are moved automatically....also there are commands that will move the apps from the sd card to int. Memory And back If you choose. And finally you can type in a2sd diskspace and and it will tell you the amount of space being used in the partition.

Apps Still taking up space on phone

Hi Everyone,
i currently have a Rooted HTC Desire with DJ Droid V1.2 and froyo. I have setup my SD card partitioned to 512mb. Everytime i install an app to the SD card or even move it to the SD card, it still takes up the full space on the phone. For example i had 116mb free on my internal storage then after installing fennic (takes up 18.51mb) i had 97.80mb left so it took up 18.19mb out of a 18.51mb install.
Am i doing something wrong? can anyone advise?

Dalvik cache and data will still be on the internal memory, only the physical app will get moved to sd card.

ok fair enough but look at how little space is actually being stored on the sd card (0.32mb) Are you saying that the app is only 0.32mb and 18.51mb of that app is data? by the way ive never used this app so i dont know how it has 18.51mb of data.

ok i prob picked a bad app as an example i was just trying to get something with a large install. i tried it with another few apps after partitioning my sd card and it seems to work fine. Thanks man.
Just one question. what is app2sd for? is that the routed version of what froyo has? it only lists like 2 apps to be able to move. which one moves the apps to the ext partition, app2sd or applications (in system menu)?

Not all apps will have the ability to "move to sd" on froyo, however with "apps2sd+" or "ext apps2sd" everything will be saved onto the ext parition of the sd card.
So since i have app2sd already preinstalled on the djdroid rom, i already see all my apps are movable to the SD card. is that correct? or are just most apps movable anyway
app2SD doesnt MAKE all YOUR APPS MOVABLE. It just alerts you when an app is movable.

Two things!
1. Why resurrect a thread that is nearly 3 months old?
2. If someone is using Apps2SD with an EXT partition, everything is already installed on the EXT partition and so is already on the SD card. There's no point "moving" it to SD since all you'd be doing is shifting it from the EXT partition to the FAT32 partition!

moving apps to sd?

Is there a way to move all your apps to the sd card? I have apps2sd but I have so many apps that my internal storage is almost full even after I moved all my apps that will go. But is there a way to trick the phone to install them all to the sd card? Im rooted.
Bump, anyone?
Bumpity Bump Bump. I would also like to know the answer to this question.
i use move2sd enabler...it's on the market.
what it will do is enable it so you can move ALL apps to sd card...even those that dont let you...just keep in mind not all apps will work from the sd card. but you dont lose anything by trying.
i've moved large files like NFS Shift and other games that dont normally have the move option, and they work just fine. same thing for the fascinate lwps that you flash, etc.
try it out
install move2sd enabler, run it and click i've read, next, and set it to external. click ok. then you move the apps through the Application Management part of the Settings

when you use apps2sd+, /data/app/ and the dalvik cache' is moved to the ext partition on your sd card, although /data/data/ stays on the device for performance reasons, when you install an app, sometimes it will save info to /data/data/ thats where your space is going, some apps use more space in /data/data than others, some use no space at all

[Q] HTC EVO Internal Space Full.

Hi guys I've been messing around with my phone all day. I have been restoring my apps back onto my phone and all that good stuff. I finally fixed my phone and when I was restoring my phone it tells me that my internal space is getting full. How is that possible if I only have 2 apps from the market installed? Any ideas?
thanks!
try clearing cache of your apps. If you have root access, download cachemate and use that. you can also move apps to your SD card to free internal space.
hope this helps
edit: you can also try wiping your phone back to stock if you continue with these issues
Weird I uninstaled Google maps update and and I now have 45MB of internal storage. lol??
Im restoring my apps then going to move them to my SD. Whats a good program to move them?
actually now it's giving me the error again..lol 45mb storage left too. weird

If you are using a custom ROM and it supports it then apps2sd because you can actually go beyond the 512 MB limit, you can make it as large as your entire SD card if you like... of course it has a trade off: the card must be repartitioned before you can use apps2sd meaning that you need to copy your card over a computer, partition and then copy back your stuff.
I use and would recommend that you use froyo to move apps to SD card. You can also move apps from the SD card back to your internal memory.
You can move most apps to SD Card; but some apps you do not have the option to move to SD card, and must remain on internal phone storage.
Follow these simple steps to move / to know whether the app can be moved or not.
1. Open Settings -> Applications ->Manage Applications and tap on the app you want to move.
2. Tap on the box “Move to SD card”.
3. Now tap on “On SD Card” to know whether your app has been moved or not.
You can also move back the app to phone memory by tapping on application and then selecting “Move to Phone” option.

The thing is..I only have 2 apps installed from the market and it's saying my internal memory is full. That just doesn't make sense.
Sprints stock ROM will give you a low storage warning when you have less than 45MB free space which I think is a little high. Thank god for apps2sd.
do you use the stock HTC mail app? if you do, try this: when you delete mail in the stock HTC mail app, it doesn't delete it, but just moves it to the 'Trash' folder? I've just cleared 6Mb that accumulated of the last month or so myself...
if all else fails, you might have to factory reset the evo.
thanks for all the help. so i needed up booting in recovery and clearing everything now it went to like 300mb and im restoring my apps. do you think i should put them on my SD card?
I would put what you can on your sd card...you can always move them back to the phone if needed

curious to know what caused that low memory problem in the first place? that's just weird.
i am not sure what causes the memory leak; but others i know with evos have had the same issue and a factory reset has solved the issue every time. good luck!

[Q] What would be the default location of apps moved to SD card?

I've had this card in my rooted Droid 1 as well as a Archos 101 tablet and in both of those instances I've moved apps to SD as the internal storage on those is too small. Now that I'm going to be using this 16gb card exclusively on my rooted Evo 4G I have no reason to have space taken up by apps that won't be used or are on internal storage on this device. I want to find the folder and delete the contents to free up some space. I see one called /Android/data and another that is just /data both on the SD card. Either of these what I'm looking for? The former appears to have some older apps that I'm not using any longer but it also seems to have a couple that I'm currently using but haven't knowingly moved to SD card.
Thanks!
With a system level file manager like Root Explorer, navigate to the /data/app folder and the /system/app folder.

I'm not talking about the current location of all my current installed apps. I'm talking about the location of apps when we move them to the sd card. I wish to locate those folders from my previous devices and delete them as all of my current apps on this device are on the device and not moved to the SD card so anything on my SD card in the way of apps should be from previous devices.

android 2.2 uses the .android_secure folder on your sdcard. for the native apps2sd. if you are using some other kind they use a ext2 or ext3 partition on your sdcard. you will need gparted or linux to see this type.

So basically if I have 3rd party apps that were installed to SD card from another device I basically need to backup the files I need to keep and format the SD card in order to delete them?

You could do that, but first, were you using some other type of apps2sd? Not the android native one that started in version 2.2? Dark tremor or any other flashable or aftermarket apps2sd that uses a ext partition on your sdcard?

I would have used a combination of individually clicking 'Move to SD card' within some of the apps as well as SDMove (which I believe actually uses the same location as moving them within the apps themselves). I don't think I used anything else but I had that phone for 18mos so it's hard for me to remember for sure. On my current Evo I haven't moved any apps to the SD Card because there's much more room on the phone than my Droid 1 and I'm actually running into problems w/capacity on my external 16gb SD card. Hence the reason I'm trying to free up some more space from objects that are unnecessary.
Ok, so what you can do is just backup your music and pictures and whatever else that you know what it is and format the card. Then move everything back afterwards.

I was hoping to avoid a format but sounds like I may not have much of a choice. I need to back up pictures, Mp3's, Titanium backup, Clockwordmod and a couple other folders and reformat. I was hoping it would be easier to track down all the loose ends though.

Yea, what you could do is delete every folder on the root of the sdcard that you don't know what it is.

If you moved them just using the Move to SD card built into Froyo (including apps like SDMove that just help you do that), you shouldn't need to reformat. That's only if you set up an ext3 partition.
Mount the card and view it from the computer (or use a card reader) and delete .android_secure. The real folder is hidden when the card is mounted on the phone.
