Nearly every contact exists twice - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive got a big problem since some time now: nearly every contact exists twice.
Now, normally this isn't a problem, as you could just delete them.
But I can't see them twice in the list. When I go to Contacts -> Click on a Contact and then press "Edit Contact" another List opens where I see them twice (both "Google"-Contacts). I don't know how I delete one of them. There is no button or something...
So open Contacts, go to one of them, press edit and there I see the contact twice, both Google-Contacts and there is no delete button, I can just edit them (and they are exactly the same). So when I for example write a SMS and enter the name, I see them twice...
Any help?

i am a novice so my advice maybe wrong, however i seem to recall i had the same problem.
in the end i deleted them All then just synced with google and my contact list was sorted.
save your contacts on google, edit them on google then sync. i think this right

Disable AutoSync.
Goto Manage Apps, find Contacts Storage and clear the cache thereby deleting all contacts on the Desire.
Manually sync Google Contacts which will rebuild the database on the Desire.
Enable AutoSync.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Didn't work...still got them twice.
But I found out a way to do it...it's a bit idiotic but it seems to be working:
- Edit 1 of the 2 contacts (delete numbers for example)
- Sync
- Delete Contacts Cache
- Sync
- Now the contacts do appear twice in the list and you can delete the empty one
It's still autosyncinc somehow by the way. I disabled Autosync (it's DEFINITELY disabled). As soon as I delete the cache I see the sync symbol in the notifications bar...

I could be wrong, but i feel quite certain, that the contacts are stored on the data partition as data not cache. More exactly in "data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts.db" so i dont see how clearing cache would remove all contacts.
Eggcake: sometimes some of these things just **** up and you have to remove correct it. But as they are googlecontacts, i believe the easiest way is to go to you googleaccount and check the contacts list, and if it's fine, go delete all contacts and sync them to the phone again.

deleting contacts imported from facebook

this may sound odd but i cant seem to find a way to delete the contact that Facebook dragged onto my phone. I have people on my friends that put any garbage into there phone number field i.e. 118118. personally i think if you don't want to put your number on there leave the field blank arg. Anyway i don't really want them cluttering up my phone book so is there a way of just ditching the ones i don't want without Facebook dumping them?
I am having the same problem with no solution in sight....
In the people app, press menu. Choose View. Untick Facebook.
this is great thank you. the only problem is it just hides them i really need the contacts gone from the phone as for example i had a message from t mobile saying welcome to our network etc however my desire says that the message is from one of my Facebook friends. The other issue is although they are now hidden from the contacts they still show when i press the phone button. This is probably something i will have to live with but my fiancée will ask questions if it keeps telling me i'm getting texts from random people lol.
The other thing is then to copy specific contacts from facebook into my normal contacts or is it just going to be easier to put them on manually and link them to there profile?

I think thats the only way around it, so dont import from facebook and just manually link contacts from your phone book. Yeah it can take time if you want to link alot of people but will also be annoying to have lots of unwanted contacts.
Any news on how to get rid of these Facebook contacts from the phone yet? It is only when I press the "phone" button that I see them, but it is rather annoying!!!
think i have sorta solved this problem. You have to clear the contact cache though and then deselect sync Facebook contacts.

Where is Contacts Directory

I'm running Fresh 3 on my EVO and am having issues / conflicts. scrambling between my EVO contacts and my MS Outlook Contacts. my Outlook contacts are straightened out, now I want to wipe / delete all contacts on my EVO. Is it possible to delete / empty whatever directory they reside? What and where is such a directory? I know I can do a wipe, but rather not. thanks
ok i havent tried this so i cant say it will work for sure but you could try going to settings > applications > running and find the peoples app (the one with the book icon.) click it and you should see a button to clear all data. click it and see if it worked.
let us know how it turns out
just remember that by default Google syncs your contacts so you may want to turn off contact syncing under accounts first or it may just rewrite them back in
Under Settings/ Applications/ Manage Applications / running there is a file called Contact Storage. clearing that data clears the contacts. Thanks for the idea Omegasun18 for the good idea.

help with contacts its gone stupid

Hi i have the htc desire and of course i have tried different roms lol.
My contacts seem to have become really messed up for some reason and i am looking for a way to fix it by starting afresh.
My contacts are synced to the google account but when i resync them back to my phone i seem to have 3 or 4 for each contact, this shows its self in the link thing where you can link a contact to facebook account.....the contacts are also linked to google contacts that are the same.
Is there a way i can remove them all from my handset and also from google and start over ... if so how....even if this means i have to manually type them all in again.
I have backed them up to the sd card by exporting them as a file but i think these may also hold the problem of the linked contacts too.
So what would be the best way to sratr over again ?
Thanks
Have you gone into... people then menu then view, to tick or untick the ones you want to show
You can merge duplicated gmails contacts. Go to
http://www.google.com/contacts

Multiples in contacts

We have 3 Evo's in my house and all 3 of us have the same problem - Multiples in the contact list.
Any idea how to cure or prevent this?
On my phone - the contacts are only supplied by google when I sign into my account. I do not import any contacts or have them coming from any other sources.
Thanks, Jack

While your contact list is open, hit "Menu", then "View", and make sure everything is unchecked except for "Google Contacts", then hit "Done". If that doesn't work, go to "Menu" from the home screen", hit "Applications", then "Manage Applications", then "All", scroll down to "Contacts Storage" and hit "Clear Data". Then sync your Gmail account again. This is what I have to do with my calendar sometimes when events show up twice. Let me know if it works for you.......
I know you said you were not getting contacts from any other source, but if you have signed into htc facebook that will try to find matches. If you go into the contact do you have an option to link that contact?

Yes and I'm faa, iliar with the facebook connections. This goes much deeper than that. I'm talking 15 or so of the same person in the contacts list.
Part of it might have been from My Lookout, but I haven't even been using that for quite a while.

Thank You very much for your help. I have done what you suggested - but I know that won't fix my problem as I have wiped my phone dozens of times in the last month playing with new ROMs and I only let google sync my contacts upon a fresh install of a rom. So I know this won't fix my problem. Thank You very much for taking the time to respond though. I really do appreciate it.

I know this sounds dumb, but did you check your Google contacts? Like you I played with roms a lot and I take off auto sync immediately. But sometimes before you can change those settings, the contacts will sync BACK to Google; duplicated contacts and all.
If you find that's the case, you can merge duplicate contacts when managing your contacts on your desktop using Gmail.
At one point, it fudged all of my groups, duplicated and even removed contacts. Luckily I have a backup file on my sdcard and pc that I was able to use.

Again - I really appreciate the help.
I have done the merge duplicates in gmail on the computer. I just installed a fresh rom and let it download my contacts from google only, yet I have multiples of almost all of my contacts. It has gotten better than it used to be somehow. In a quick glance I only noticed no more than 5 of a single contact. I also noticed that the multiples appear to be from accounts that have more than one phone number in them. Like if I have a home phone, a cell phone, a fax phone and an alternate - I will end up with 4 different contacts for that person.
When on ur phone and in contacts scroll over look at links to contact. There is a place that looks like a link to a chain that us either whole or broken. If connected it will link all the contacts with same name and vice versa for the unlinked. Hope that helps. That's for sense roms. If aosp rom they should consolidate on there own with use from what I've seen

Delete old emails from Trash ?

So, does anyone have a tip for deleting all the old emails that fill up the Trash folder for accounts ? My old Desire had a 'select all' option......but cannot see anything like this for the Play ?
I have 6 email accounts accessed through the default Email client > when I delete them from the respective (or Combined) Inbox, they go to the respective Trach folder > this takes up space......I removed 457 emails from one account's Trash folder last night, and it took some time !
IIRC, deleting Data in the Applications menu of Settings will clear all account settings too....so that is a non-starter. The overall MB use of Mail was almost completely cleared down after last night's deleting session, but I am really hoping there is a better solution to properly removing lots of mails ???
I will be interested in this also. Having to delete everything and then go to trash and delete it again isn't the best use of time.
the way i removed them, however this may not be efficient for you was to delete the email account i use and then re add it, it will wipe all the mailboxes
One of the more retarded "features" of android, there is no way to "Empty Trash". Just select each one by hand and delete it again. Good luck.
Yeah the stock email app is horrible...
Give one of the other email clients in the Market a try
Thanks for replies......
Shame SE hasn't done something similar to HTC, then, as the Desire had a menu option to (De)Select All, making Trash removal a doddle.
TBH, not sure why the app keeps all the Trash items anyway ?!?!
