I'm running Fresh 3 on my EVO and am having issues / conflicts. scrambling between my EVO contacts and my MS Outlook Contacts. my Outlook contacts are straightened out, now I want to wipe / delete all contacts on my EVO. Is it possible to delete / empty whatever directory they reside? What and where is such a directory? I know I can do a wipe, but rather not. thanks
ok i havent tried this so i cant say it will work for sure but you could try going to settings > applications > running and find the peoples app (the one with the book icon.) click it and you should see a button to clear all data. click it and see if it worked.
let us know how it turns out
just remember that by default Google syncs your contacts so you may want to turn off contact syncing under accounts first or it may just rewrite them back in
Under Settings/ Applications/ Manage Applications / running there is a file called Contact Storage. clearing that data clears the contacts. Thanks for the idea Omegasun18 for the good idea.

Ive got a big problem since some time now: nearly every contact exists twice.
Now, normally this isn't a problem, as you could just delete them.
But I can't see them twice in the list. When I go to Contacts -> Click on a Contact and then press "Edit Contact" another List opens where I see them twice (both "Google"-Contacts). I don't know how I delete one of them. There is no button or something...
So open Contacts, go to one of them, press edit and there I see the contact twice, both Google-Contacts and there is no delete button, I can just edit them (and they are exactly the same). So when I for example write a SMS and enter the name, I see them twice...
Any help?
i am a novice so my advice maybe wrong, however i seem to recall i had the same problem.
in the end i deleted them All then just synced with google and my contact list was sorted.
save your contacts on google, edit them on google then sync. i think this right
Disable AutoSync.
Goto Manage Apps, find Contacts Storage and clear the cache thereby deleting all contacts on the Desire.
Manually sync Google Contacts which will rebuild the database on the Desire.
Enable AutoSync.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Didn't work...still got them twice.
But I found out a way to do it...it's a bit idiotic but it seems to be working:
- Edit 1 of the 2 contacts (delete numbers for example)
- Sync
- Delete Contacts Cache
- Sync
- Now the contacts do appear twice in the list and you can delete the empty one
It's still autosyncinc somehow by the way. I disabled Autosync (it's DEFINITELY disabled). As soon as I delete the cache I see the sync symbol in the notifications bar...

I could be wrong, but i feel quite certain, that the contacts are stored on the data partition as data not cache. More exactly in "data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts.db" so i dont see how clearing cache would remove all contacts.
Eggcake: sometimes some of these things just **** up and you have to remove correct it. But as they are googlecontacts, i believe the easiest way is to go to you googleaccount and check the contacts list, and if it's fine, go delete all contacts and sync them to the phone again.
How the hell do u back your contacts up to Google?? I've searched and I cant find the answers i'm looking for anywhere. Whenever I sync to Google from 'accounts and sync' nothing happens..and now i have successfully deleted all my contacts from my phone after clearing the Contacts app data cache, which i read might help...Luckily i have nandroids to pull the data from.. How exactly do i go about re-flashing the contact data back to the phone from the nandroid, so i can then back em up to Google/export them the the sdcard?? (without restoring the entire nandroid)
Idk if its my ROM or what..but its frustrating..
Go to your gmail account, and click the contacts tab. Do you see any of them there? If not check and make sure that you are saving your contacts to google and not your phone.
Thanks for the quick reply. There's nothing there under the Contacts tab, or any of the sub categories, but how to i check if im syncing them to Google vs the phone?
I cant tell you how to restore your contacts from nandroid, however when you do have them restored go to Settings>Accounts & Sync>Google and make sure you have Sync Contacts checked. This is a 2 way sync so any contacts you have on google will be synced to the phone and the phone to google
Yeah, I've done that as well. It even shows the date when it was last synced..10 min ago, of course i have no contacts to sync now but i'm sure that was working earlier.
I dont know that you can say its not working until you can get those contacts restored, after you do that and sync then lets deal with a non sync issue if there still is one.
I mean I had tried that before I lost the contact data..before I created this thread. The reason i wiped the contacts cache was because sync was not working. I think im just going to do a full nandroid restore anyway and end up installing a different ROM. Any suggestions?
They are automatically backed up when you sync your gmail
As long as u checked back up data with my Google account
This is one thing that I love about Google

Yeah, the problem is it's not syncing automatically
So, does anyone have a tip for deleting all the old emails that fill up the Trash folder for accounts ? My old Desire had a 'select all' option......but cannot see anything like this for the Play ?
I have 6 email accounts accessed through the default Email client > when I delete them from the respective (or Combined) Inbox, they go to the respective Trach folder > this takes up space......I removed 457 emails from one account's Trash folder last night, and it took some time !
IIRC, deleting Data in the Applications menu of Settings will clear all account settings too....so that is a non-starter. The overall MB use of Mail was almost completely cleared down after last night's deleting session, but I am really hoping there is a better solution to properly removing lots of mails ???
I will be interested in this also. Having to delete everything and then go to trash and delete it again isn't the best use of time.
the way i removed them, however this may not be efficient for you was to delete the email account i use and then re add it, it will wipe all the mailboxes
One of the more retarded "features" of android, there is no way to "Empty Trash". Just select each one by hand and delete it again. Good luck.
Yeah the stock email app is horrible...
Give one of the other email clients in the Market a try
Thanks for replies......
Shame SE hasn't done something similar to HTC, then, as the Desire had a menu option to (De)Select All, making Trash removal a doddle.
TBH, not sure why the app keeps all the Trash items anyway ?!?!
1: I've been running an ICS theme on my epic 4g touch for a little while and I'm looking into installing a ROM to improve speed and battery life. I've been struggling to choose between the most current version of Blazer, or Unnamed. They seem relatively similar apart from the fact that if I get Unnamed I'll have to flash an ICS theme over it, but I'd like opinions from everyone.
2: I understand for both of those ROMs you must wipe your phone. I have no issue with wiping apps as they can be reinstalled, but I need my contacts. I don't have an SD card and would prefer to not have to buy one, so is there any method to backing up my contacts that I could retrieve them post flashing?
Thanks in advance
1. I don't have either of those so can't help with that.
2. if you have a Gmail account set up you can back up contacts. its in accounts and sync under settings. just be sure to go online into your Gmail account to check. I thought I was backed up before and wasn't.

I've tried syncing the contacts to gmail before but when I checked the account, none of my contacts were there.
ya I believe I fixed it by going to accounts and sync. then clicked on the google account. unchecked all. then checked only contacts and hit sync now. if that doesn't work try removing account and then add it again. sorry I don't know of any third party way to backup the contacts.
The trick is to get all of your email contacts into Gmail on your PC even if you have to manually enter each one. Then they will sync automatically to your phone and you won't have to back anything up. If you use Outlook on your computer, I think there's a way to export your contacts into gmail with a csv file. I couldn't tell you how to do it but you should be able to find out by searching in Google forums. I did mine all manually when I first started using android and I've never had to back up anything. Google does it for me. I know this will sound really strange, but to get them all to sync to Gmail and into my phone contacts list, I had to enter a fake email address for the contacts I only had a phone number for. Now I can flash and wipe my phone all I want and all my email and phone contacts sync again as soon as my phone connects to Google servers. I have them stored on my sd card, too, but I never need to restore them from it. Make sure you have two way sync turned on in your Gmail account on your computer. If you want gmail to pull in all of your other email accounts such as Comcast or hotmail, you can set that up on your computer too in Gmail account settings. I get all my mail in Gmail now and don't even use the other email client on my phone.
When you create a contact it will give you 2 options. 1 to backup internal 2 to backup to Google. It seems you selected internal so you need to go to contacts and go through the menus until you switch all contacts to Google then do your sync through settings. Best of luck if your still having issues do a titanium backup.. but like the poster said above as long as you save your contacts to Google in the future it makes going from rom to rom a breeze

Sweet, thanks everyone. I've got my contacts onto Gmail. Anyone have opinions regarding Unnamed vs. Blazer?
There's also a way to backup manually your contact list. In contacts program hit menu then export. It saves the file as 00001.icf in the root of your sd card. After you export, use a file manager to go and make sure the file is there before proceeding. You could then copy it to your computer or email it as an attachment to yourself.
Or it could be .vcf I forgot
Every now and then my contacts will be lost and in setting > Google > Sync Contacts will say it synced but all my contacts are gone. Some times I can just re sync and it works but other times it doesn't. Is there a way for this to not happen?
Or sometimes it will say Sync Contacts has an error and will not sync to Google and I'll have different contacts on my phone and on Google contacts

make sure when you save a new contact that the name is saved as a gmail contact and not on your phone. there are actually two contact "books" on you phone, the internal phone contacts and the gmail contacts.

Yeah that is not it. I always save new contacts under gmail not phone. I think its something to do with syncing with google

Personally never had that issue. Occasionally sync goes down for a minute, then comes back up. If you are like me and keep sync off and changes roms, if you added a contact and didn't sync, you could miss a few that were added.
So i'd jut double check to be safe.

What ROM are you using? Stock, Stock rooted, TW-based, AOSP (4.1.2, 4.2.1, or 4.2.2)? I've ran all of these (and then some) and haven't run into anything like this, but if it's ROM-specific, knowing what you're running will help narrow it down.
Cheers!
same thing here
Sometimes my phone log just shows numbers and when I check my contact list it's empty.
Reboot phone and they are all back. My contacts are on Google but was wondering if there is a way to store them on the phone also.
Some way to download to a file on the phone?

Go to the contacts app, press menu > export
Then select the account and it'll export to your scarf as a CSV file
There are also apps that let you import/export your contacts as an XML file

Thanks. Done. I don't think I will ever find all the little tweaks and tricks to this thing. Every time I use it I learn something.

Hahaha, its actually a general Android feature, not just specific to the S3
