I noticed quite a lot of sense 3.0 roms have been pumped out recently, the funny thing is none of them are significantly different than the other. majority of these half-baked roms do not even have the basic function of a smartphone (aka connectivity, messaging and such) and they are loaded with broken features. LOL man i'm starting to miss the Fascinate community, majority of the roms we had (kangbang, evil fascinating, etc) are rock solid with 100% functionality as far as roms goes. just saying....
Greetings ben,
I think that you are focusing on how well those roms ran, without remembering how well they started. I came from the Fascinate as well, I ended its call of duty with Evil fascination. None of the roms you mentioned, started without glitches and issues.
The incredible 2 has only had s-off for a couple months. Gingerbread has only been broken for a couple of weeks. The devs are just getting into the meat of the device. It's going to take a bit of time for the developers to turn out their creations, and it's going to take a hell of a lot more patience from the end users.
People seem to forget that these developers don't work for us. The sense of entitlement in these forums is off the chart. Unless you donated to your dev of choice, you haven't had to pay a dime for their continued hard word. Don't let donations fool you into thinking that somehow, the developers owe you anything. Donations are are a sign of respect and appreciation, nothing more.
So until we see a rom developed by you, that comes first day with no glitches, errors or issues, is full of incredible (no pun intended) options and choices, I think that you should maybe show the people working to make your phone experience better, a lot more respect.
I'm not trying to flame you, but your post in a slap in the face to the people making something for you to use freely.

I think if your are unhappy with the.state of development or with particular roms it should just probably remain private....developers do this for.free and because.they enjoy doing it
Don't like the.sense roms? Use the 3 fully.functional aosp roms we do have or use rmks debloated stock rom
Also afaik virtous unity is a fully functional sense 3 experience
Can only have 1 ROM on ur phone at a time anyway

Not true...

But you are correct in saying that he should just keep his negative comments to himself.
I've tried most of the roms that we have for the Dinc 2 so far, and really, for what little amount of time that the Devs have had to work there magic, I'm amazed at what has been accomplished.
I personally am a fan of Sense, so I have been using Virtuosity Unity for the past week now. I spent a weekend with CM7 and a day with Miui...
I would be happy to use any of these for a daily driver, and do with Unity. I keep Gingersense on my Sd card for a backup/go to rom... I can't say that I would consider any of the roms as bad...
I for one am very thankful for the Devs and what they do to make out phones better. You guys Rock!!

If you are running into issues, then I would suggest asking for assistance. I'm on a sense 3.0 ROM FULLY functional. You may be missing something.
I dont know how long you had your fascinate, but it took a VERY long time for a fully functional aosp ROM became available to us, not for lack of trying from some amazing devs. Now consider we barely got s-off on gb stock, yet I immediately could load various sense or aosp roms.
Just my opinion.
Virtuous is fully functional. I know nothing wrong with the ROM. Thats kinda why it hasnt been updated in weeks, because it doesnt need it. And like Nitsuj said they do it for free. Do a little more research and reading before you flame the awesome devs we have here.
(We dont want anything happening here like it did with JT. A few of the Fascinate users know what Im talking about on that one.)
I think the issue is more of devs pumping out more than one ROM and not sticking to one build per device.
I understand that this stuff takes time, but I'd really like to see the time (and our donations) go to one ROM, not a bunch of different ports or hacks that have lingering bugs that don't get fixed.
I agree with the OP 100%, maybe a different tone could have been used to express the frustration though.
None the less, I'd love to get together with a dev and talk about what us, the community would like to see. I don't like seeing dirty ports of something to come with features that are either missing or can't be fixed.

Lol I love this kid.
And seriously just because it has little problems that some people are getting doesnt mean its a bad ROM, or it isnt functional, or has "major problems" like you said. **** stock RUU's have more problems and not to mention bigger ones than anything here in the development section. Especially Newts stuff. Stock GB deletes main system apps. Pretty big problem. And thats from HTC. People that are paid a lot of money to make these. Again these people are doing it for free. And they do one hell of a job. A rom is never going to be perfect there will always be little bugs that cant really be fixed because NOT EVERY PHONE IS THE SAME. One may have a problem that another may not. So if one doesnt work for you use another. He has many options for ROMs from 2.1, to 2.1/3.0, and full 3.0. Something for everyone that are updated regularly. If your going to talk crap about id say our top dev right now then get off this forum. Nobody here wants that kind of flaming.

Oh and also you say were so infatuated with Newts work or whatever. I dont even run his ROMs. Im either on virtuous or MIUI. I test his ROMs for him. And I still know how often he updates them and just how stable they are. Your a fool.
To me this is like being welcomed into a strangers house to use the bathroom, then telling them that it was an awful experience because their toilet paper was not soft enough. Are you entitled to feel that way? Of course. I would just think it is common courtesy to keep those thoughts to yourself.

LOL I love that analogy. But i agree with you.
@Mavic. I understand your frustration. I came from the x10 community. We had the same issues. Newt reminds me of a dev named Trip. He would start a rom, get it near perfect then start another. Ever time though his end results were awesome. Another issue coming from Newts side is he makes roms for other devices. None the less he is an awesome dev who is highly respected. Give the devs some time. GB has only been cracked since around the 15th of this month.

Hello everyone.
Im a HTC Faithful and currently using an Evo 4g still. This phone is starting to show its age and im thinking of picking up a Epic Touch.
But looking at the dev section, it doesnt seem that there are that many roms in progress, let alone any updated ICS roms. There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on.
Im just wondering where all the ICS roms are. If i moved over, id prob want to stick to ICS.
Anyone move from Evo to Epic Touch and feel that there are enough roms? That its being supported as much as other HTC phones?
Any input?
Depends. The Stock Touchwiz Roms from samsung has plenty of development here. The AOSP side we just barely got a CM7/KANG that has quite a few bugs. For some those bugs arent a problem, but for me it didnt pass as a daily driver.
Also the whole Clockworkmod-fused-with-the-kernel/rom on this phone will give you a headache if this is your first time rooting a Samsung Phone.
It would be my first Samsung rooting. I have looked over the instructions and saw it's somewhat different from HTC style, but nothing I can't handle.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I personally think samsung is easier when it comes to rooting, etc. I came from an evo 3d, and that was kind of a headache, especially themeing because of the .m10 files that it had. I kinda lean toward samsung though, if you cant tell by my sig.
No where
I see that no one has answered your main question...There are no ICS ROMs available as of right now...The deves are creating a base for it so when its possible to create one, they can implment it faster.
Uhhh. I guess the dev's are working on them.
I'd be stoked if you can work faster than they can, or pay them to work faster...
But it's not like changing a battery, there's a lot of work that goes into cooking a ROM.
They want to get CM7 complete and stable as a base to use for other Aosp roms. Samsung's official ICS for our device will have touchwiz and I think 95% of us don't want that. We need Aosp roms and kernels nailed down before we progress any further. Once the devs have a stable functional base to work from other doors will open. It takes time.

I'm not knocking the devs or anything. I understand how ROMs work and have built my own in the past.
I guess I'm just surprised that such a popular device doesn't have any devs working on ics while ancient devices like the Evo and HD2 have multiple roms.
What matters the most to me are phones that have a large modder base. I semi expected to see this place packed with devs and other crazy stuff. Caught me off guard that it's quieter in here then in the Evo section.

I think its more because Samsung is not releasing the source code, once they put it out our esteemed devs will bring ICS very fast. HTC is very fast about everything giving out source, update etc. I am just waiting for HTC to come with some phone which is a little bit better in specs and I am getting that. Samsung phones just looks beatifull. I want a phone that works as good and is backed up by support from the Manufacturer.
The fact is the Evo is no longer that great of a phone. It's nowhere near the same league of phone that the GS2 is, ICS withstanding.
Honestly the new Touchwiz isn't that bad. The only people making a big fat fuss over it seem to be previous HTC owners. Let me tell you, sense sucks big fat donkey balls compared to Touchwiz. I was a Go Launcher devotee prior to owning the Epic Touch. Touchwiz has proved to be ok for me.
I would still be completely happy with my day one purchase of Epic Touch even if we don't end up getting ICS until mid next year, gingerbread on this thing still flies compared to every other phone out there.
Furthermore, the OG Epic had a slow but steady dev community. Half the roms I flashed on the evo ended up being kangs or just plain crappy old skins. There were a few really good ones, salvagemod was the best vanilla AOSP. But really, the OG Epic community put out some real quality stuff, albeit at a slower pace.
Honest answer: jump in, the water is fine. Yeah, ICS will be quite nice once we get it, but in the meantime, there isn't a better phone you can get on sprint than the Epic touch.

Develepors here ARE working on ICS. Its all over these boards. There are A LOT of roms being produced. I'm not sure how you missed that... this IS a superphone. I'm not sure how you missed that either. This phone is MUCH simpler to work with than HTC brands. Since you've built roms before, open up a ET4G rom and compare it to the evo4g. Literally was writing this verbatim! LOL. I'm guessing OP posted without looking anywhere but the EVO forum and this Q and A section or the dozens of ICS threads would have reached out and smacked him in the eye.
Coming from HTC HeroC > LG Optimus S > HTC Evo 4G > HTC Evo 3D to this I was a bit shocked to not see as many devs picking the device up as well. I think everyone is missing what OP is saying and taking it as a bash, it is a surprise that more devs are not migrating towards the E4GT when this is obviously sprint best device to date. This device has the potential to be the next Evo 4G, development wise. It is crazy fast/smooth out of the box. It is also the easiest device I have rooted to date. When I left the Evo 3D for this near launch I did so for the screen size and the Exynos Processor, not for development. Even if no AOSP roms were to come to the device, one of the modified stock roms with Go Launcher on it is all I really need, though I want CM9, lol. That said we now have CM7 in the works, and CM9 will follow soon. Our AOSP devs are leaning more daily, and taking a lot of heat for what they are doing. Even if they are getting help from _______ (fill in blank), they are still taking all they are getting and putting it together for a awesome AOSP type rom. Who else is doing that for the device? Exactly!
But yet some still bash and call them Kang Bangers
I say go for it, find a deal on CL or FleaBay and jump. You will not be disappointed one bit

Considering how Nice and respectful I have been on this thread, I'm glad that you can understand EXACTLY where I'm coming from. Thank you for the information.
I'm not here to knock sgs2 nor am ragging on the hard working devs. I'm just staying a fact: there aren't very many different kinds of roms here.
And if you look in the Dev section, there are no ics roms to flash. No alphas. No betas. Nothing. I'm sure people are working on it... But there are none there RIGHT NOW.
Some of you need to chill out. I wasn't insulting you or your mom. I was asking a few questions and making an observation. Lighten up trolls.
I'll be picking up one of these this weekend, and aside from rooting and flashing calk's build (that man is amazing), I'm going to be teaching myself how Sammy does it's roms.
Does Sammy not release source code? Aren't they legally required to do this?

I really don't see anyone trolling you here. Looks like a pretty tame thread to me. My comment was probably the "harshest"if you could call it that. My main point was that you stated that no one was working on ICS and I was pointing out that it would be extremely difficult to miss the fact that several devs are in fact working on ICS, MIUI, CM7+9, AOSP and more TW custom ROM's.
I don't think any of us disagree that we wish there we more things going on, but I also think people forget that the EVO dev process was not overnight. Go back to the first EVO posts and you can see that it was several weeks from release before the customization started and a couple months before things really got going. And when the EVO came out, there was zero worthy competition. Pretty much everyone jumped on the EVO train.
I don't think that anyone here is upset by your post, but I do think it discounts the efforts that have been going on for well over a month to get ICS and the other goods to this device.
"There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on." I think that statement was the one that bothered me because it clearly showed that you were making assumptions without doing any research. And we have enough people in this forum doing plenty of that already. In fact, I have never seen more dev cooperation on any other device. Take a look at the ICS thread from the beginning and you'll see some amazing teamwork. Unfortunately derailed by demanding and entitled community members and leeches, but still alive and kicking in IRC and private spaces.
But I digress, the main point, you probably wouldn't be disappointed by picking up this phone. IMO, it is the best out right now and a quick look around will show you that the number of ROMs is about to hit a stride. The dates of release can show you that new work has just arrived and its beginning to look a lot like EVO-town in here.

Coming from the Evo 4G and writing guides and helping people on those forums for a while, I bought an E4GT.
Compared to the Evo just development wise on XDA, there aren't as many ROMs or as much development going on.
But phone wise, its a great phone and a great upgrade from the Evo 4G. Personally I use Launcher Pro/ADW so slapping that over TouchWiz is great.
Rooting is simple. There are auto roots going on and not as much of a pain as the Evo 4G. Also flashing things like Radios, ROMs, etc are faster as well because of the difference in phone speed and boot speed.
As for ICS, there was something in the works, but I think there hasn't been any much development on it.
so today i was reading through the FF09 thread, and it seems like this build as well as FF02 have seemed to have taken a large step backwards. but then i look around the development forum and see all of the crazy things our amazing devs do, and i thought to myself:
A.) i wonder what these devs do as their day jobs, because the roms put out by them seem to be leaps and bounds better than the roms put out by the actual Samsung devs.
B.) i was wondering what you devs went to college for, if it had anything to do with computer science, or if you just taught yourselves,

I agree Samsung/Sprint should be snatching these guys up but then I'd hate to lose them.
This is why people should always be appreciative of the work that is given so freely, other than donations here and there (or for some none at all) these guys are working for nothing more than the pleasure of helping out and learning.
I love xda without the developers we wouldn't have awesome ics roms or ics for that matter. I appreciate all the hard work they do for all us to enjoy

In all honesty, Samsung is building from scratch, while we're taking their build and tweaking it. It's a lot easier when you're tweaking a base, rather than creating it. But it is disappointing that certain flaws are fixed by people who treat this as a hobby as opposed to those that base their career on this.
I agree with the OP though. I am curious as to what our devs do as a day job/ how they got started in developing roms.

I wish xda can start some shorts of online classes Where u can Learn all this tricks and tweaks. Thanks to all devs once again without them phones would be boring.
I am A Police Officer and in the Army National Guard. I have a wife and kids and they all play sports (and yes my wife stays mad at me because I'm always flashing/developing something for our phones lol)... So my life is busy busy AND I'm a moderator here at XDA to top it off. I have not been to college for ANY of the things I do here... I've learn them all from XDA... Reading, learning, doing BRICKING lol. I know there are some that won't believe that, but its true and I have no reason to lie. I started theming on another site, continued here, and began to build a rom thought, could I build a rom that I like? I finally tried and after about 52 flashes it finally booted... I've been hooked ever since... I started our Team to have other like minded people come together and help eachother... I am now trying to pass on what I know to some of them... But you know what? I don't know everything and half the time I learn more from THEM. So it keeps me going when I get burned out developing, the team just by asking or having me test their stuff... its all so much fun... XDA has been good to me, users and the people who run the show. I'm still here because I love tweaking the hell out of these phones and making it better... and when you guys like it, that makes it even more worthwhile...

In all honesty, Samsung is building from scratch, while we're taking their build and tweaking it. It's a lot easier when you're tweaking a base, rather than creating it. But it is disappointing that certain flaws are fixed by people who treat this as a hobby as opposed to those that base their career on this.

Not everyone here is necessarily on the level of modifying/porting things from compiled releases. Its a short cut for us because we have an ICS base to work off of but even without it I think CM9 would be only slightly behind Samsung instead they are at or exceeded in some areas. But the Epic 4G developers for example did some fantastic work and I assume combined with help from CM developers ended up with with both an official 7 and 9, with 9 being from non Samsung derived source.
I found it funny to see the early builds and first 2 CM9 port Alphas to have the exact same issues that Samsung had just fixed in the latest leaks of the period. Just interesting to watch our guys doing very similar work. Some of the issues on sbrissens cm9 source kernel are also reminiscent of the earlier leaks.
What is a job? Im a homeless bum that has access to starbucks wifi and has ubuntu based laptop. I stole this laptop from some guy at starbucks and I think his name was Calk??? Lol.

I have tried a few others, liquid, alien, atom etc and none just seem to add up. I hate to sound condescending and by no means disrespectful but im looking for some others to play with. Customizable, leds, softkeys, statusbars, are some of the features I use a lot.

CM10, duh. I've tried quite a few as well and ended up going back to CM10. Their new update service is pretty slick if you flash a lot. I stick with CM's own kernel because it was designed for his build. Cyanogen has obviously put forth the most work in building android out of any developer out there and this is why I trust his work more than others on here. Multiple people are responsible for changes to the code and review what is to be submitted and not submitted for a better overall experience/compatibility; not just some random Joe Schmo developer tinkering with code.
You can't argue that Cyanogen and his team are the best devs on here, no one here has come close to what he's done with his build system for all of the devices he builds for. He makes CM a simple extension to vanilla android and compliments it very well.
I didn't even like sorcery when I tried it..

"I don't mean to be condescending" and "don't want any drama" do not belong in a thread such as this. You were better off trying all of them, and not some of them (and thinking it was all of them) and making a decision for yourself..

Sure you can, and that isn't fair. People have blinders on if they think only CM are the best. CM is a team of over a 100 devs. They have the manpower needed to do what they do. Nobody else does.
One of CM's recent features that they tried to play off as totally original (and many believe it), was in a rom a month prior, the commit provided by someone who has no such "dev" status.
There is talent everywhere. CM is not the answer to it all.

heres maguro http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=rasbeanjelly&device=maguro
if you have a toro, press toro on the right side of the page. if you have a toro plus, UBER started a thread in the toro+ section. all the rasbean jelly rom support can be found in the trinity kernel thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455874&page=2267
No offense taken. I just think what CM has does is the cleanest solution to a custom build of android for mobile devices. And there's a reason they have so many developers on their team.. and don't forget Cyanogen himself.

From the Roms I've tried (which is every single one) I've found that cm10 is one of the lower on the totem pole when it come to features. A great ROM yes super fast and super stable yes but as for features.... not so much.

You're talking minimal differences man. How many more features does AOKP have over CM10? It's not as many as you think if you list them all, and besides, the CM team has their own that AOKP doesn't have.

How come on the Nexus forums all the roms are the same????
Now let me get one thing cleared up first, I am not a developer, I have rudimentary knowledge and know enough to get by and install the mods on this forum. I am not aiming this at any developer in particular and I am very grateful to those who spend their time making these Roms and for that I thank you.
But with other phones Ive owned (Sony, HTC and Samsung) the forums are filled with stock roms + AOSP / AOKP and MIUI, Gaming Roms, Light roms, Various ports of Sense, Xperia or Touchwiz and thats what I like to have on my device.
Here on our forums are 10 shades of the same look, and im just wondering why? how? Just pure coincidence? Is it because a Nexus device is similar to AOSP by default??
I like my nexus and I love the forum are the hard workers making these free roms but I switched to a Nexus phone and tab because they are developers phones, easy to hack etc but it seems that the creativity on this part of XDA is stunted somehow, Phones that are harder to hack like for example the HTC Desire HD have way more variety like the challenge is worth seeing how much stuff can be ported.
This is not a ***** and is not intended to offend those who work hard on this forum but just food for thought, what are your experiences / thoughts?

Well yes and no....
I bought the Nexus because on most of my phones i ended up running AOSP eventually so this was a logical purchase but i also ran MIUI for such a long time and miss it tbh.
It would be fair to say a segment of Nexus owners buy for the AOSP feel but not all and only, most don't know what they are buying / getting into or some don't see the whole picture (like me)
Cheers

Miui? With all xda, and all the devices, you people keep asking for bloated ****, senses and what not. Tsk. Rather use B2G or Flyme.

Oh yes how witty of you to jump to the exulted persona of some one who uttered "port it yourself"
I was simply asking for opinions and insights as to why their is less variety on a device that is meant to be modified, as such a visitor to a town comments on what is different in this locale.
Lets apply your logic to a food critic who comments that the food was missing X, Y and Z, by your logic the restaurant in question should say
"you want X? Cook it yourself"
You have misread my intentions in your rush to be oh so common internet troll
And some bloatware is nice, i particular enjoy MIUI because it is aesthetically pleasing despite the fact I turn most features off.
Thank you for your input, Im sure all the developers on this forum feel safe from evil doers like me with you to back them up
I have the same feeling m8, but maybe this is happening because 4.2.1 has lots of bugs and maybe dev's are waiting for google to clean the mess.
I also came from S2 where we had lots of aokp based roms, really, those were my favourite, here I can barely see aokp roms or cm10 based ones.
I havn't bought my Nexus ONLY to try aosp rom's like other said, that makes no sense.
I'm really thankful to dev's that "invest" their time in this community, which is great, and I'm not moaning, it's just like an observation.
And btw, personal opinions matter, that's why this community exists and develops itself, cuz we all have an opinion.
I got hardcore flamed for asking the same question...

Although I haven't noticed such a thing before, I found that your observation is true
Personally, I had my S II and started trying ROMs then could not be satisfied on a ROM choice until I could cook my own ROM Afterwards I switched to GNex and I am following the same way of making my own ROM which I really enjoy a lot more on GNex because I am building from source not just modifying Samsung's ROMs as with S II
So basically I feel that this device is intended more for those who like pure experience, but still in the "Themes and Apps" section there are some ports like S III TouchWiz so probably after reaching a good level of such porting then someone may start implementing it in a ROM thus we have a new ROM style? I hope so

I spend a lot of time in the themes and apps section for that sole purpose as well not to mention spending countless $$ of new launchers just to change the feel. Its a vicious cycle, we have been given the ability to change android how we want and for most of is, it isnt good enough we want more.
Honestly, I think the "lack of variety" (quoted because some agree and some don't) is due to the hardware. If the Gnex had the same processor as some of the other flagships, porting wouldn't be as difficult, or same camera sensor, etc. When everything is different, that makes porting just a ton harder than it already is. Just my 2¢, but hey, what do I know? But the OP has a point, there's CM, AOKP, PA, CNA, and stock. Everything else seems to be a derivative of that, with CNA literally being a conglomeration of the first two. To each his own.

Well having an open source hardware with all the binaries available seems to be the curse of gnex now, with many of the OEM phone dev's tirelessly working to remake binaries for closed hardware , here we have a completely open device with nothing more then AOSP ! .I'm up for asop as the next person in this forum but how about some innovations that can compete with OEM and eventually be part of android by default ?
As my previous poster says there's AOSP which is same as stock minus the gaaps then there is CM made from AOSP which is the most innovative followed/mirrored closely by aokp and then we have there derivatives with PA being a derivative of CM and CNA being the derivative of both CM and AOKP,
we have a ton of rom's but they are all twins of one another with AOSP being the eldest
Just my thoughts :highfive:

There's a few others that pop up and down (like BAMF) which are their own flavours and dependent sometimes on exactly which GNex you have. I've occasionally seen links to others that the devs seem to have a personal issue with being mentioned on xda -- and so they're out there but I honestly have no idea where else to look.

A restaurant is a business, which exists to make money... the logic of your "rebuttal" implies that rom developers do what they do for the purpose of making a profit, which isn't the case.
This forum isn't a diner where you can complain that your eggs aren't cooked right... everything that's here (roms/themes/mods/etc...) is here because someone devoted their free time and efforts.
If the lack of sense/touchwiz/whatever roms is such a big deal... maybe you should have done your research before buying it.

I'm pretty sure a lot of restaurants, especially ones good enough to be critiqued, start their business for the pure joy of their trade. So your argument is invalid.
Food is supposed to be prepared the way you order it. Much in the same way that you look thru the "menu" of xda (ROM features) before you order (download/install). If something is wrong with it (GPS borked, camera fc etc) anyone will send it back to the chef. So again, your argument is invalid.

You don't "order" a ROM. You either use it or don't. Nobody is forcing you to use a ROM, if you don't like it then you make your own.
Nobody cares if arguments are "invalid" in your opinion. You don't have one bit of authority to back it up.
